Class of '94
Which albums from that year still rate? What trends are evident now? What will be remembered? And will we want to hear that the biggest selling album in Australia in 1994 was Music Box by Mariah Carey?
This will please one Herald reader who recently wrote: "Mariah Carey's collaboration with rapper ODB on Fantasy helped usher in the trend of the rap/sung collaboration. That trend is still going strong 10 years later, and it did more to change where music was going than Nirvana did. Why do we never see articles about Mariah's influence? I guess if she had killed herself in 1992 she would get more respect." Now there's a thought.

When You Believe
Yesterday evening, my dad was watching the TV show "Ombudsjan" on VRT (Belgian TV channel for the Dutch speaking part of Belgium) and suddenly, I heard Mariah's part in When You Believe, I ran (as fast as the road runner ) to be in front of the TV to see what it was about and the song was used as music to illustrate a moving scene where a young woman was finally able to see her grandma again after many years.
"There can be miracles, when you believe".

Music pirates sued in Kansas
Washington - The recording industry sued 477 more computer users Wednesday, including dozens of college students at schools in 11 states, accusing them of illegally sharing music across the Internet.
The recording companies filed two of the lawsuits in federal court in Kansas against seven unnamed persons believed to be living in the state.
The companies accuse the individuals of violating copyrights by downloading and distributing songs. The recording companies do not know the identities of the individuals who downloaded the music, but they have the numeric Internet protocol addresses they were using at the time.
The recording companies seek permission to serve a subpoena on the University of Kansas to get two of the defendants' names, addresses, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. According to the lawsuits, the persons downloaded such music as Phil Collins' “In the Air Tonight,” UB40's “Red Red Wine” REO Speedwagon's “Keep on Loving You” and Mariah Carey's “Dreamlover.”
The record companies are seeking an injunction against the individuals to prevent them from violating copyrights. The companies also are seeking to have illegal copies of the songs destroyed, and unspecified monetary damages.
The Recording Industry Association of America, the trade group for the largest labels, praised efforts by colleges and universities to use technology and school policies to crack down on music piracy on their computer networks. But it said the most egregious offenders on campus deserved to be sued.
“There is also a complementary need for enforcement by copyright owners against the serious offenders to remind people that this activity is illegal,” said the group's president, Cary Sherman.
The latest filings brings the number of lawsuits filed by the recording industry to 2,454 since last summer. None of the cases has yet gone to trial, and 437 persons so far have agreed to pay financial penalties of about $3,000 as settlements.

Who destroy the real artists?
At the moment I'm concerned by the record companies which are in trouble.  Last night, I was watching the news on RTBF (Belgian TV channel for the French speaking part of Belgium), they were of course talking about the piracy on internet, illegal downloads which have a bad effect on the future of many artists.  More and more artists have their future jeopardized.  A lot of them have already been fired and others seem to be on a list waiting to see if their label will fire them or not.  The record companies have already fired a lot of employees and closed regional offices.  I found out that the marketing managers of these record companies came from unexpected companies: chain store of furniture in kit, food products like: yoghourt... I asked myself how can they promote an artist like he is a product, and I was shocked.  Also, for sure, the reality shows (American Idol, Pop Idol, Star Academy, Idool), call that whatever you want, are destroying real artists.  Viewers are used to finance the shows - "vote for your favorite contestant by text message ", when we count the profits of a text message, we understand the interest of the record companies and TV channels.  When the public will realize it, it will be too late, the real artists will be destroyed.

Our open letter to Joan Rivers: Cut it out!
By Lauren Beckham Falcone
Oh Joan, can we talk? Now that you're in town for your one-woman show ``Broke and Alone in Boston,'' we've done some serious speculating. And what with awards season just a couple of months behind us, we gotta know:
Is it all an act?
Surely you're not this daffy: ``Who's this?'' you asked Charlize Theron of her boyfriend, actor Stuart Townsend, at this year's Oscars.
You can't be this crude: ``I came to blows with ABC two years ago,'' you recently told a reporter. ``I think it was over Sharon Stone. I really gave a girl a good push, then I laughed and thought, `Hmmm. I've still got it.' ''
And you're kidding, right? ``Oh, you are a fool! It should be four times this size,'' you barked at Christine Baumgartner, Kevin Costner's fiancee, after checking out her engagement ring.
It's all just a big joke, this red carpet gig you have with your daughter. You can't expect us to believe that you're doing good work by filleting up-and-coming starlets and squashing novice designers like a cockroach dashing across one of your impeccably designed kitchen countertops.
It's not like you dispense real fashion advice - like say, our cheery little friends from ``Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.'' You slice and dice and go home to Botox injections and martinis. Serial killers have more sympathetic jobs.
Tell us the ultimate punch line is that you don't mean any of it.
Like, remember the time you called Mariah Carey fat? Of course, you made a career out of making fun of Elizabeth Taylor. And remember in ``Broke and Alone in London'' you joked about 9/11 widows?
If, just in case, you're serious about all this, perhaps you could change your tactics. Maybe get off the red carpet and help the little folk. Go to the mall. An amusement park. You'll be doing God's work. Answer the confounding questions, like, Can we wear white before Memorial Day? Are open-toed shoes with pantyhose a no-no? Are slips always necessary and should sneakers be worn outside the gym?
We don't care if you don't like Bjork's bird look. We can figure it out ourselves. But you know that, right?
In the end, we're the real jokes, watching you do your dirty work. But we have one request. Can you can the QVC jewelry line? It's not funny at all. It's just plain cruel.

Sweet Sowelu music
By Rori Caffrey
Sowelu, the young urban-pop singer currently heating up the charts, excels in both categories, though.
Her first step into the spotlight was with Voices of Korea/Japan, a groundbreaking unit comprising herself, J-pop duo Chemistry, and South Korean artists Lena Park and Brown Eyes.
Their song for the 2002 FIFA World Cup marked a new beginning in relations between the two countries.
"Your destiny is not confirmed. It's not fixed," she says, leaning in and steadying her gaze. "We can change the future. If I want something to happen, it's up to me. It's up to my heart. I have a pretty big dream, and I know to get it I have to try hard and believe in myself. Sometimes I lose hope, get down on myself, you know, it's human nature. But I will never give up and I will make my dream come true."
And what would this dream be?
"One of my dreams is to do an all-Japan tour," she says, stressing the word "one."
"I don't have a goal about how many CDs I'll sell," she says. "I don't really care about numbers. I don't dream about being No. 1, and I'm not really aiming for certain sales or figures."
What Sowelu does want more than anything is to make an impact, to be remembered, and--as strange as it sounds--to have her music become somebody's "Hero."
A music fan from an early age, Sowelu received a microphone for her birthday when her hands were barely big enough to grip one. She would take it when she went to see her father, a session musician with touring bands, perform, pretending to sing into it as she watched from stage left.
Her father left her family, however, to perform in the United States. Sowelu insists she bears no hard feelings toward him, and remains in contact with him now, but says it did make for a lonely childhood. But through this solitude came inspiration.
"I remember coming home from school one day and nobody was home," she recalls. "It was quiet and I was lonely, so I turned on the CD player, and the song that came on was 'Hero' by Mariah Carey, and..."
She stops. Her mouth curls into a smile and her eyes seem to twinkle.
"I just stopped right there. I got goose bumps," she says excitedly, running her finger along her forearms to demonstrate.
"Every song that you like carries a memory," she continues. "So when I listen to 'Hero,' I remember the first time I heard it. I want my song to be the force that brings back someone's memory when they are older. When they become a grandma or grandpa, I hope they can look back on their past through my music."

Mariah is crazy for Mercedes-Benz
According to the Latin radio show "America Showbiz", singer Mariah Carey only has Mercedes Benz cars in her garage. She has approximately 10 cars. Black is the predominant color.
The show also said that her mother, brother and body guards 'can drive any type of car, but Mariah only drives a Mercedes'.
The singer will be one of the first to receive the new Mercedes-Benz Vision Grand Sports Tourer, that will start being produced in 2005.
Currently, Mariah is getting ready to act in her new movie "The Sweet Science", directed by Jordan Brady.

Moral contract - United Fans Against Piracy
Season 1: About 50 sites took part for Charmbracelet.
Season 2: Launched.
I know there's still plenty of time before the release of the new album, but I thought it would be good to start now, so, it will be totally in place for the release.  Feel free to use the banner and/or logo and link them to the Moral contract - United Fans Against Piracy Season 2 page, here.  Also, e-mail me the link of your site at staff@heroesofmariah.com, so I can add it to the page.  Please, spread the word.  Thanks .

All the sites must be united to avoid the copy of Mariah's new single and album.
Everyone likes to have exclusive news, but the fact of giving in download commercial songs is not an exclusiveness.
It seems to us that we owe that to Mariah. She worked so much to create this new album that we can't demolish all and steal her work.
The majority of the fans will buy the album, but others fans or non-fans quite simply will pirate it.
If we all could be united against the hacking of Mariah's new album that would prove that we are true "lambs" and it is the most beautiful gift we could make to Mariah!
Spread the word.
Gilles
Thanks to Tahi for the banner and Sly for the logo.

The Malaysian sponsor rewards 19 Mariah Carey Charmbracelet World Tour Live 2004 contests winners

Kuala Lumpur, Monday, April 12, 2004:  Recently, Malaysia witnessed the most anticipated concert by an international artiste over the last 5 years. Mariah took Malaysia by storm when more than 50,000 of her devoted fans gathered at the venerable Merdeka Stadium as early as 3.00 p.m. to watch her show.  Despite the change in concert date, the Friday traffic and the afternoon deluge, fans thronged the stadium to witness this one-night-only ‘intimate evening’ with Mariah Carey, presented by the Malaysian sponsor.
The concert began with the gorgeous and flamboyant Mariah Carey, driven around the stadium in an open-top black BMW convertible. Launching right into one of her hottest numbers, ‘Heartbreaker’, Mariah gave her fans what they came to see and that was the American superstar belting out most of her biggest hits right here in Malaysia. She also proved one again that she is still the reigning queen of five-octave singing at her brilliant concert.
For the lucky grand-prize winners, it was undoubtedly an evening to remember. Their royalty treatment started when they arrived at the concert venue where they were ushered to their super VIP seats from where they enjoyed the enthralling performance of their favorite star. It didn’t end there as later they were taken to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel for a private session with the renowned diva.
Today, the grand-prize winners and other weekly winners are officially celebrated at Clickers, Kelana Jaya. All 19 winners received their grand and weekly prizes. The two contests, namely the SMS Contest and the Online Contest were organized in conjunction with the most awaited concert to further create more excitement among Mariah’s fan and to give the fans a chance to win cool, awesome prizes.
The Mariah Carey Charmbracelet World Tour SMS Contest commenced January 15 and ended on February 17, 2004.  Though having a short period, the contest received overwhelming response from all walks of life, especially among Mariah’s die-hard fans.
Ms Wong Hooi Lin, from Shah Alam, emerged as the participant with the most SMS (short message service) sent with the most correct answers, and was  officially announced as the grand prize winner of the Carey Charmbracelet World Tour SMS Contest. She won herself 6 day 5 night holiday package to Perth Australia for 2 persons, and an autographed Charmbracelet CD.
The second prize winner,  Ng Pei Fung, from Subang Jaya, won herself a brand new Skuter Nitro NS 125 with an autographed Charmbracelet CD, while Ms Syahrinerwutty Mohamad Shahrizal from Segamat Johor emerged as the proud third prize winner of the contest and won a Panasonic Home Theatre System with an autographed Charmbracelet CD. The grand prize winners also received backstage concert passes that gave them access to meet Mariah in person and they ingeniously grabbed the opportunity to take memorable pictures with the flamboyant diva.
The Mariah Carey Charmbracelet World Tour SMS Contest also awarded top three weekly prizes for the four weeks that the contest was held. The prizes include  Sony DVD Players, Philips DVD Players, Nokia 3315 mobile phones and autographed Charmbracelet CDs.
Besides the SMS Contest, the Malaysian sponsor also organized the Mariah Carey Charmbracelet World Tour Online Contest. Similar to the SMS Contest, this contest also started on January 15 and ended on February 16, 2004 and it was open to all the customers. Four weekly prize winners of the Online Contest each received a Panasonic mobile phone.
For both contests, all fans had to do was  answer as many multiple-choice questions on Mariah Carey to win the awesome, cool prizes. Participants with the most correct answers won the contest.

Maybe you know it, maybe not, a few years ago I finished screenwriting courses.  And of course, to stay in the game, you need from time to time, to upgrade your courses.  That's what I do and... nice surprise in my course
John Meadows' Hollywood Breakthrough:
Just Like In The Movies
Vancouver screenwriter John Meadows wrote WISE GIRLS between June of 1997 and September of 1998, where it premiered as a full read at the Spin Cycle Cold Reading Series at the Anza Club in Vancouver.
It was made into a movie in 2001 with a cast of stars and a Hollywood budget. Here is his story:
I sent a synopsis of the script down to 300 agents in LA that fall. I received no response from 297 of the agents, I received two rejection letters and one response which led to me getting a shady agent.
By Christmas, a production company was interested, Robin Wright Penn was attached and production was supposed to start in the spring of 1999. My agent sabotaged the deal by demanding huge fees and a producer credit for herself. By summer, I had fired her and by fall I had signed a cosy option with producer Jack Sojka. Robin Wright Penn backed out, but, in January 2000, Mira Sorvino entered the picture.
Mira championed the script while the producers struggled to raise funds. Directors came and went and the project was delayed until September 2000, when I went crazy and fled to Australia to attend the Olympics and write articles on the games. I stayed in Sydney, ran a Cold Reading Series and interned at the writing center at Fox Studios Australia.
Then I got the call - get on a plane to LA.
So, on April 17, 2001, I flew down to LA where WISEGIRLS PRODUCTIONS put me up at the Comfort Inn in Santa Monica.
Not so fancy shmancy, but hey, I'm just the writer (I only CREATED the friggin thing from SCRATCH) and there is absolutely no Sheryl Crow song that goes "Until the sun came up over Santa Monica Boulevard at the Comfort Inn..."
On Tuesday morning I meet up with Jack Sojka. Breakfast goes well.
Jack will still get a producer credit on WISEGIRLS, a big whack of cash, and gets the rights to the project back if we don't go into production by the fall.
From there it's off to Lions Share/Leading Pictures where I meet Anthony Esposito, the now defacto producer of the project. Anthony shakes my hand and says, "Hey, ya wanna slice of pizza?" Picture Joey Soprano, only with lots more hair. I decline the pizza. We hop into his champagne-coloured Corvette convertible and zoom off down Sunset Boulevard.
We arrive at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel to meet the girls. My cast. The WISEGIRLS. The director, David Anspaugh, meets us in the lobby along with a bodyguard. Up we go in the elevator. Suddenly, I am completely nervous. All those years of typing away in my shitty little bachelor apartment on Barclay street and now, here I am, on my way up to the penthouse of the Beverly Wilshire. With the director. To meet the cast.
To cover my nervousness I ask David how his hockey team is doing. David is a huge LA Kings fan. Talking hockey soothes my nerves.
We knock on the door of the penthouse and one of the assistants opens the door. Inside, I find a room big enough to land a plane with a magnificent view. Lunch is being served by a room service waiter.
As a former room service waiter myself, I think back to all those times I served celebrities at the Four Seasons in Vancouver and I savour the moment. Six degrees of separation, indeed.
David introduces me to the assistant. "John Meadows, Mira Sorvino."
I blink. I look at the assistant, who is in fact, not the assistant, but the lead of my movie. I've been in the room all of five seconds and I have already mistaken the lead of my movie for the assistant. Dude, where's my star? I do a silent "do-oh" in my head as Mira and I shake hands. "Great script", she says.
David next introduces me to Melora Walters, who was so good in MAGNOLIA as the coke addict. Melora has a squeaky, Marilyn-Monroe-ish voice and is quite tiny. The odd thing is that Melora is RIPPED. Her arms put Linda Hamilton's Terminator 2 phase to shame. When she shakes my hand, I wince like the poopy-wimpy little writer that I am.
Then it's on to Mariah, who bounces about the room like the bundle of energy that she is. A confession: I don't know who Mariah Carrey is. I know none of her albums. None of her songs. I don't even know what she looks like. I know her name and that's about it. But it is her penthouse and she did just sign an $80 MILLION record deal, so I'll be nice to her.
No need for me to act though. Mariah is awesome. She has the ability to make everyone in the room feel relaxed and welcome. She just kicks back and hangs like she is one of the gals from Brooklyn. Except she has her own jet.
We sit down at the huge dining table and start to go over the script, page by page. And do you know what? It is the best feeling.
After all those years and years of schlepping the script around Hollywood, with so many false starts and empty promises, to actually be sitting here listening to my cast say my words is awesome.
It's here where Mira really starts to shine. The level of integrity and professionalism she brings to the table is amazing. She not only has her part memorized, but everyone else’s as well. She knows the script backwards and forwards, not just this draft, but all the drafts from the last year or so. She has pages of notes typed up on her laptop. She has countless smart and funny suggestions. The woman is Harvard educated and she has an Academy Award at home. Enough said.
At one point, Mira calls me on a point of dialogue: "What the hell is a whack?" Her character has just said that she is going to take a big whack of valium. "What's a whack? Is that a Canadianism?" A big discussion ensues about the meaning of whack. Mariah says that to her, a whack is, "Y'know, when your girlfriend has on an outfit and you say, girl, that outfit is whack." Anthony says that a whack is the same as putting a cap in someone's head, to whack them. We spend five minutes on the topic of whack and decide that, yes, in this context it is a Canadianism, possibly derived from a British dialect. This is the sort of behind-the-scenes rigmarole they just don't show on Entertainment Tonight.
We push on to well past 8pm before we call it a day. David, our intrepid director, is about to collapse from exhaustion. As I say goodbye to the girls, I use their character names. When I say goodbye to Mira, I call her Meg. She races over to me, "No one's ever called me that before! I've been waiting over a year to play this part. I'm so excited." I am bowled over by Mira's enthusiasm. As a screenwriter to hear those words from your lead is like manna from heaven.
I get back to the Comfort Inn and flop on my bed. I congratulate myself on hardly saying anything stupid all day, a real feat for me.
The next day I'm in the parking lot of the Best Buy in my rented Ford Focus, surrounded by all the BMWs, Range Rovers, and luxury cars.
Look, it's a Ford Focus, he must be a screenwriter!
I click on my radio and listen to the DJs on one of LA's top 40 stations. This is what I hear:
"...and we'll see Mariah Carey this summer in ALL THAT GLITTERS, her first movie. We've also just heard that Mariah will be co-starring with Mira Sorvino in WISEGIRLS, a sort of female version of GOODFELLAS. Yeah right. Somehow I can't see Mariah and Mira out there in the desert digging a grave. I don't think Mariah's ever even lifted a shovel..."
At this point, I'm laughing my head off. My film is being dissed on the radio by snarky DJ's. How cool is that?
Wise Girls opened at the Sundance Film Fest in January 2001.

Mariah recording near the Bahamas
I'm in Minneapolis right now attending a Music Educator's Conference and I just came back from a session with Jimmy Jam.
He gave a session on popular music and its place in schools' music programs. After the talk, we were able to go up to him, so I got his autograph and asked him if he was working with Mariah yet on her new album? He laughed and said, "Actually, Mariah is near the Bahamas, recording some stuff for her new album. I'm supposed to be there, but I had to be here, so one of our partners is working with her at the moment until we can get there."

Fashion queen
Kal Kaur Rai is a 34-year-old Indian fashion designer in London with a difference. There is nothing Indian, she insists, in her fashion.
She was born in Huddersfield of parents who came from Punjab, studied management at Hull University and wandered into fashion ‘by accident’.
“I make clothes for an English market,” she said, just before going on stage to collect the ‘Young Achiever of the Year’ prize at the posh Asian Business Awards function at the Park Lane Hilton, hosted by the Eastern Eye newspaper.
Talking of posh brings me to ‘Posh’, aka Victoria Beckham, who was photographed in the Daily Mail, wearing one of Kal’s strappy creations — Kal herself wore one to last week’s Eastern Eye banquet.
Celebrity endorsements do matter for the Kal Kaur Rai label, set up in 1997. Kal mentions ‘Beyonce, Atomic Kitten and Mis-Teeq’ among trendy pop and TV stars who have been seen in her outfits. Others are SugarBabes, Dani Behr, Mariah Carey, Geri Halliwell and Cat Deeley, who all figure regularly in women’s magazines.
Kal’s summer collection, ‘Dawn to Dusk’, with the theme, ‘Release your inner senorita this summer,’ includes short, sexy mini-skirts in layered chiffon with the hems cut at an angle. “People keep looking for an Indian influence in my fashion because I am Indian but there isn’t any,” she says, with a shy Punjabi village belle smile.

Jasmine interview

She's a young good looking and talented female from Southall and Br-Asian wanted to know how it was that she became so successful.
After having studied for a degree in dance, theatre and communication, Jasmine intended to enter a career in TV Production. Little did she know that she would end up being best chums with Mariah Carey!
Her professional career began by working as a runner for the Big Breakfast, then purely by accident she was asked to try out as a presenter for ‘The Word’. She was told by her Channel 4 boss, that she was there to 'make up the numbers' and everyone was so surprised when she actually got the job! The show was later axed and Jasmine went on to present a show in America called The Grind for MTV. When she returned to the UK her agent tried to get Jas a job in MTV London, but they thought that Jasmine was too loud to present for a UK audience, so she began to do voiceovers and managed to worm her way in that way!
"I have a great job, I meet loads of celebrities and get to see the real side of it and some of it really isn't that glamorous. I get to see the glamour and then come back to earth…It's cool"
Jasmine realises that she is a very lucky girl and after she spent one New Year at Mariah Carey's party, she is a very envied girl too! Her friendship with the star began when Jasmine had to interview her in Italy, producers were worried and nervous as Jasmine was renown for speaking her mind. She told Mariah that she didn't like her stuff until quite recently! Jas believes that is why Mariah felt so comfortable with her, because of her honesty.
Jasmine spent the rest of the afternoon with her, just hangin' out and they got on really well.
From then on they both kept in touch and Jasmine would spend time with Mariah when she visited London, she told us that they would "catch up on gossip!!" Mariah invited Jas and her boyfriend Rahsaan (from Damage) to be guests at her boyfriends house in Mexico for a New Year party. Rahsaan however, wanted to spend it with his mum (bless him!) as he is totally unimpressed with any famous person - even Mariah! Never the less, Jasmine used her female charms and got her own way and they went to Mexico for two weeks over the new year period.
(But Jasmine was attacked by a Dolphin (the friendliest mammal on the earth I believe?) and was glad to return home, as she got sick of the sun and the beach?)
As well as presenting for MTV, Jasmine also produces some of her own shows. Although she tells me that even though she earns four times more than her secretarial mum ever could, her mum is still waiting for her to get a proper job.
"She supports me, but thinks that I am just having a good time and eventually I will settle down with a proper job."
"People on the street think you're cool and in the office they just think that you are a puppet that talks, people give you more respect when you produce as well."
The career girl hopes on one day having a family and a nice house with a nice garden and longs for a traditional family environment hmmm!

Top 10 Celebrity Meltdowns
By Kat Giantis
10. Mariah Carey, 34
Meltdown Moment: It was a cruel summer for Mariah Carey in July 2001. The octave-jumping, cleavage-abusing diva, busily promoting her soon-to-be-released, semi-autobiographical flick "Glitter" (and we all know how that turned out), seemed out of sorts. On MTV's TRL, she handed out popsicles before beginning a bizarre striptease. "I just want one day off when I can go swimming and eat ice cream and look at rainbows," Mariah told a befuddled Carson Daly. Days later, the pop star left a pair of rambling audio messages on her Web site. Hospitalization, officially blamed on "extreme exhaustion," soon followed.
Dysfunctional Dialogue: "I just want you to know that I'm trying to understand things in life right now," Carey said on her Web site. "I just can't trust anybody anymore right now because I don't understand what's going on ... I'm desperately trying to get out of this room ... I allowed myself to be a little too paranoid about life ... I'm gonna take like a minute off... Nothing's wrong ..."
The Aftermath: The butterfly-loving chart-topper has yet to soar to her previous record-breaking heights. Post-breakdown, her record label, EMI, dumped her, though it kindly ponied up $28 million to buy out her contract. Her ultra-personal album "Charmbracelet" earned mixed reviews but solid sales, and she earned strong notices for her downscaled 2003 concert tour.
She currently has a new album in the works and will once again brave the big screen as she plays against type as a diva in the upcoming flick "State Property II."

‘American Idol’ destroying music
Commentary by Jeff Tyree
Is it bad that the corporate machine is actually manipulating people to select their “Idols” through a process of elimination, in which the contestants impersonate old rhythm and blues artists like Aretha Franklin? Or, is it bad that no one is protesting this?
It could be that we are lazy. Rather than discover some new artists through human interaction we rely on television to take our hand and lead us down a road of empty talent and soulless music.
Paula Abdul is a former Lakers girl, and is best known for her “Opposites Attract” video along side a cartoon cat. The British guy is straight up rubbish. So why does any one think these fools know anything about music?
Every contestant seems to be a bunk karaoke act with forced “urban” elongated vocals. It’s as if every contestant is trying to emulate Boyz II Men or Mariah Carey. It’s really awful. Those artists had talent, these hacks are just mindless cattle that are starving for attention and would swallow hot coals if it got them a meeting with a record executive. They all have that “please love me” look in their eye, the pre-Hollywood sellout gaze that only the truly heartless individuals within this country can relate.
Artists used to come from smoke-filled clubs and cover rare tracks that meant something to them as individuals. They weren’t accepted by the nine-to-five mall crowds. They were raw, real and soulful. The street used to provide our word of mouth, and now it’s just thrown at us.
Fancy graphics, bright lights, makeup and commercials now package the teen idols of America. We’ve come a long way from Ed Sullivan, and the progress isn’t necessarily for the better.
Or, maybe it is better to siphon out our musical talent based on mass appeal and viewer votes? The process sounds like a bizarre science fiction novel to me. The fact that it’s true creeps me out. They should just call it American “false” Idol.
If this is all earth shattering to you and you thought that this process created more story then the traditional ways of music creation, just ponder the post “Idol” television appearances by the contestants.
It’s all a series of steps to instill stars into your life, a new way the industry can create fail safe record sales and secure their end financially. Sad, but true. As long as people are eating it up they are going to serve it.
So, I challenge everyone to protest this obnoxious, creepy and overall lame program. Do something else to fill the void, like listen to a compact disc of actual music. If we let this continue it will be inevitable at every stage of entertainment.
Believe me, the machine never sleeps, more siphons are to come if we as a collective group do not turn away from this garbage.

Heroes comment: So true Jeff, same here.  It came to a point that I don't listen to the radio anymore and soon I will need to walk in the streets with my eyes closed to avoid seeing the big posters of these "artists".

Euro Tours Are in the Pink
By Susanne Ault
Los Angeles (Billboard) - With American music fans more fickle than ever, many acts increasingly are scoring their biggest paydays overseas.
Veterans Mariah Carey, Bon Jovi and Lionel Richie are among the artists who continue to do well on the global circuit.
But even newer artists like Pink, Ben Harper and Usher are cultivating overseas fans, who often remain loyal long after an act fades in the States.
"What I think many of us see is that an artist can fall off much more quickly in America," says John Marx, senior VP of contemporary music at the William Morris Agency. "But in Europe and other territories, an audience will remain faithful to you for years."
Americans, he says, are "just more fickle."
Changing landscape
Sources cite the development of new venues around the world, the strength of foreign currencies vs. the dollar, the loyalty of international fans and the novelty value of certain superstars as reasons for the success of international tours.
In Carey's case, the artist snagged 40% more total revenue from her 36 dates in the Pacific Rim, Europe and the Middle East than from the tour's 33 U.S. shows, says Marx, Carey's agent.
With both domestic and overseas ticket prices averaging $50-$60, the complete tour grossed $30 million, according to Marx. He declined to specify the U.S. gross.
Carey could play stadiums and arenas on most of the international dates, Marx says, but only theaters and auditoriums in the States.
"For the most part, in America her average capacity was half of what it was overseas," he notes.
Among the biggest crowds were 40,000 people in Shanghai, China, over two shows, Nov. 12 and 14; and 30,000 fans Nov. 16 at Fort Bonifacio in Manila, Philippines.
Then there is the novelty factor.
"Mariah touring in some of these places is really big news," Tony Goldering, VP of international at WMA, says. "Beirut? really unusual for an artist of her caliber to go there," he says, referring to her Feb. 25 performance.

Tommy on Mariah
About the Fantasy video at Madison Square Garden, 1996
"I remember telling her many times: 'button up the shirt, they aren't here to see your body, they want to listen to you'... but she never listened. She was always an exhibitionist."
In 1996, weeks after the divorce announcement
"I don't like to say this because it sounds rude, but if I had never heard her demo tape in 1989 she would still be a waitress wanting to be famous. She was lucky to find me in that party."
On the Glitter project and rumors of her leaving the label
"I didn't support the Glitter project because I thought the timing wasn't appropriate. But she was the one who wanted to leave Sony. I didn't fire her."
In 1994, marriage announcement
"She's great. She is with me at all times. I know that we'll be happy even with the press always trying to find something to bring us down."
About the 1995 Daydream photoshoot
"I had to ask her to smile in the pictures. I knew something wasn't well."
About Thalia, 2003
"People have been saying that she is the new version of Mariah Carey. Let's say she is the better version. But both are talented and I don't want the media to compare them."

"Artistically and emotionally, a lot of people were really affected by it. Which is unusual in this business. If Mariah Carey was to die tomorrow, I'd still go have lunch."

Cary Strikes Up Tres Chicas
Neal Weiss
Former Whiskeytown violinist leads all-female folk trio
Former Whiskeytown mainstay Caitlin Cary has temporarily stepped aside from her solo career to concentrate on another project, the harmony-rich, all-female folk-rock trio Tres Chicas. The group's debut album, Sweetwater, arrives June 29th from North Carolina-based independent label, Yep Roc Records, home to Cary's three solo releases.
But perhaps a misleading name isn't such a bad thing. "I've made all my friends who live in big cities go to big record stores and put my solo record in the Mariah Carey section, hoping that people will buy it by mistake," Cary says, laughing. "Maybe we can do the same thing with the Tres Chicas. Maybe it will accidentally become a hit in the Latin market."

Mariah Carey Boulevard
Fans and admirers of US-American singer Mariah Carey will have a new destination to make a pilgrimage to from June 1st 2004 on. The Mariah Carey Boulevard in Brunei. Yes, you read that right, Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, son of the sultan of Brunei, is planning to dedicate the main part of a new shopping-paradise to his favorite singer. According to the prince this is an honor that Carey should have been given years ago for being the best selling artist in the history of recorded music. You might remember another occasion that the prince used to show his admiration for the songstress, he presented her with a pair of earrings worth $48,000 in London last October. The Mariah Carey Boulevard will be named and opened to the public in a special ceremony on June 1st, and of course the singer herself is invited as the guest of honor. Stores that will have their address on Mariah Carey Boulevard include Gucci, D&G and DKNY. We'd have expected 'Hello Kitty' to move in.
