Great day!!!!
It was a really good day today with the premiere of "I want To Know What Love Is".  Love it, hate it, great, bad, disappointed, happy, tears, goose bumps, we don't need reviews today, everyone feels it its own way.  And even if at some moments it's not "perfect" for everyone, remember it's from "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel"

From under my umbrella, ella, ella, eh, eh to EVP of Island Records or the climb of a producer

Amazon reviews "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel"
Imperfections are in the eye of the beholder. You can see them as flaws, or as the very qualities that make us human -- and that make us strive to be better people in search of a perfection that we know we can never fully achieve. In the thirteen songs on her spellbinding new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, Mariah Carey explores those aspects of our shared humanity with a rare depth, honesty and open-heartedness. It's one of the strongest statements in her long, distinguished career.
The subject of Memoirs is love at all its stages in our lives. Experiencing it for the first time. Losing it. Remembering its most painful moments, and also its times of greatest innocence and joy. Yearning for it. Learning from it. Growing as a result of its profound power. Finding it again and being grateful for so great a gift. And, finally, being humbled, filled with wonder and elevated by love's mysterious ways. In that sense and more, Memoirs is a full, immensely satisfying journey.

"Each song is like an intimate conversation or entry in a private diary," Carey says about the album. "A lot of the songs reflect specific, different times in my life. Others were inspired by movies, actual events that happened to me, or the stories of friends who told me about experiences that they've gone through." With just one exception, Carey wrote and produced the entire album in collaboration with The-Dream and Tricky Stewart. The trio clearly shared an inspired sense of what Memoirs should be. Sinuous grooves and instantly memorable melodies flow from track to track, while the wit and intimacy of the lyrics create the feel of one friend talking to another. As well-defined as each song is, Memoirs plays with the beauty and consistency of a classic, start-to-finish album.

"My main goal was to work with people I could collaborate with without it seeming redundant or stale," Carey says. "In my opinion Tricky is one of the most underrated major producers out there right now. I really enjoyed collaborating with him. And I especially liked writing with The-Dream, basically because we both love having fun with lyrics and melodies, and we're also capable of getting more serious on deeper songs. There is a particular sense of freedom I feel when we write together -- even though I make him stay in the studio all night until he is ready to kill me! LOL!"

Memoirs' first single is the hard-hitting "Obsessed," which is accompanied by a video directed by Brett Ratner (the Rush Hour trilogy) in which Carey plays both the glamorous star and her stalker fan. Like the video, the song's lyrics combine devastating putdowns ("Last man on the Earth still couldn't get this") with humor ("See right through you like you're bathin' in Windex"). The no-nonsense "Up Out My Face" captures a similar caustic mood, dismissing a former lover with the send-off, "When I break, I break, boy." "It's a Wrap" delivers a similar message about the end of an affair: "When it's gone, it's gone." "Standing O," with its irresistible chorus, sardonically applauds a faithless ex for his signature achievement: "You played the one that loved you the most." "Betcha Gon' Know" foresees karmic revenge for a wayward lover, but, once again, the clever lyrics ("Oprah Winfrey whole segment for real, for real / 20/20 Barbara Walters for real, for real") encourage a smile amid the pain.

The ballad "H.A.T.E.U.," meanwhile, finds the singer seeing life in the wake of a breakup and longing for the moment when loss and regret transform into a cleansing anger. But the title of the song doesn't necessarily stand for what you think it might. "H.A.T.E.U. is the first song I wrote for the album," Carey says, "and it stands for Having A Typical Emotional Upset."

Always a brilliant technical singer with an extraordinary vocal range, Carey rises to new heights on that track. "I sing a recurring melody in the upper register of my voice; it's not an ad-lib, but an integral part of the song's hook," she says. "That's not something I've done before, and when listening back to it, it reminded me of how Minnie Riperton used her upper register on her hit song `Lovin' You.' I thought how ironic that her song was called `Lovin' You' and my song is called, `H.A.T.E.U.' - and both use that upper `whistle register' as a major part of the melody. So it's sort of an homage to Minnie Riperton, a tribute to her since she has been so influential in my singing style."

On a tender note, the wistful "Candy Bling" beautifully evokes the blissful realm of young love ("Anklets, name plates that you gave to me/Sweet tarts, ring pops had that candy bling/And you were my world"), while "Inseparable" aches for a love that went wrong for reasons that seem impossible to comprehend. "More Than Just Friends" floats off into a fantasy of what a casual relationship might become ("Permanently paint me in your picture like Picasso/Love me down till I hit the top of my soprano!"). "Ribbon" and "The Impossible" swoon with happiness and thankfulness over redemptive love that has returned to make life rich again. "You did the impossible," Carey sings. "You rescued my love."

Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel ends with a spectacularly powerful gospel rendition of Foreigner's gorgeous ballad, "I Want to Know What Love Is." Carey's voice soars into the heavens as a soul-stirring choir makes it clear that the search for love is the closest that any human being ever gets to the divine.

Which brings us back to the angel of the album's title. "I had written a song called `Imperfect,'" Carey says, "but it didn't make it onto the album. The lyrics of that song address the fact that the world puts so much pressure on us -- especially on women -- to be perfect and look a certain way, and that is impossible because nobody is perfect. Only God is perfect. I know I've tried to be a good person, but I am definitely no angel!"

"But after I put this album together and decided to name it Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," she concludes, "I remembered that the Minnie Riperton album that contained `Lovin' You' was called Perfect Angel. So I felt in so many ways that it was meant to be."

Mariah Carey And Gabourey Sidibe Became 'Besties' On 'Precious' Set
'
Mariah and I would sit and talk about fashion and perfume and jewelry,' actress says of her co-star.
There's no other way to put it: "Precious" is brutal, an urban horror story overwhelming in its exploration of familial abuse, rape, teenage pregnancy and the hopelessness that pervades one broken family's life. A thoroughly un-diva-like Mariah Carey appears as a social worker and Mo'Nique has virtually locked down an Oscar nod for her turn as a sadistic mother, but at the center of it all is the 16-year-old title character played by newcomer Gabourey Sidibe.

She's an untrained actress, contended daily with material that is beyond difficult, and yet on set had the time of her life. "We would do really, really intense scenes where I'd be crying or saying, 'My dad raped me,' and then when the director would say, 'Cut,' I'd be giggling," Sidibe, a New York native in her 20s, told MTV News. "I don't have any formal training how to be an actress. I don't know any better than to stop being the character once the scene is over."

The crew didn't quite know how to react to her light-switch-like transformation and, even now, after "Precious" won both the Grand Jury Award and the Special Jury Prize at Sundance, the people she meets tend to confuse Sidibe with her character.

"They'll start to talk to me in a more careful tone or be really wary of me," she explained. "They'll want to coddle me or they see me in the street and they'll want to hug me and rub my back and tell me everything will be OK. But it's cool, I like hugging."

As the actress said, she's got a "big personality," and she bonded with her big-name co-stars on set. "Mariah and I would sit and talk about fashion and perfume and jewelry," she said. "It was like sitting in junior high and talking to your bestie. She hated her wardrobe! We all hated our wardrobe!"

New "Obsessed" remix on the way
Toronto's DJ/Producer/Remixer/Radio Host on 103.9 PROUD FM, Cajjmere Wray wrote on his Twitter page that mixes are done and were delivered to Def Jam on August 19.

There's also an article in fab Magazine:
Cajjmere retouches Mariah

Local remixer, DJ and ProudFM radio host Cajjmere Wray can now add Mariah Carey to his resume. Wray was just hired to remix the single “Obsessed” from the diva’s upcoming album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. Wray has already been commissioned to do wildly successful label remixes for Mel C (“I got great European exposure on that one”), Toronto’s Divine Brown for her “Sunglasses” single (“a little bit tribal and total fun”) and of course his remix for the biggest Canadian single of last year, Deborah Cox’s “Beautiful R U.”

Wray tells me that when Mariah’s single came out, radio programmers didn’t like it in the US. As with all Mariah’s releases there is a very large and strategic marketing plan being launched with Wray’s version available on Masterbeat and iTunes. “It’s exciting as it’s getting my music out there around the world as Mariah is known globally,” says Wray. “The mixes that have already come out are very happy, high energy. Mine is high energy with a hard edge and a hint of electro. Definitely a peak hour track.”

BET reviews "Memoirs"

L.A. Reid Unveils Mariah's "Memoirs" Album
Earlier this week, L.A. Reid held an exclusive album listening event with various members of the press for Mariah Carey's upcoming "Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel" album, due out on Island Records in late September. The room listened attentively to the tracks that were previewed in L.A.'s candle-lit corner office.

After the album's prelude, "Memoirs" leads off with MC's first single "Obsessed," which has already reached #1 on BET's "106 & Park" countdown show. But the song is followed by a powerful blend of uptempo dance tracks, mid-tempo R&B jams and heartfelt ballads.

L.A. Reid confirmed that Mariah's second single will be the remake of Foreigner's classic "I Wanna Know What Love Is," where Mariah exercises her vocal range. On other songs, Carey continues to show off her unique talents, singing her heart out on "Angels Cry" and "Ribbon."

Written and produced entirely by Mariah, Tricky and The-Dream, the album's strongest selling point is its musical consistency. The tracks seem to flow into each other nicely, and as usual, Mariah has more than enough potential singles. The writing on songs like "Standing O" will keep all-time Mariah fans happy, while a younger audience will appreciate the down-to-earth rawness of songs like "Up Out My Face" and "It's A Wrap."

For most of the album, Mariah is belting out notes that only she can hit, and by the end of the session, the entire room was applauding her efforts. L.A. thanked the attendees for their time, before insisting that the album was what he believed to be a "classic" ("and I don't say that too often," he said).

Everyone Falls for ‘Bad Mariah’ Story
If only some of these “gossip columns” checked their facts and figures.

One of yesterday’s local papers got just about everything wrong in its story about Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston’s new albums. I do hope Michael Lewittes takes them to task in his new Gossip Cop blog.

The NY Daily News apparently doesn’t know that this year’s Grammy eligibility deadline has moved up a month to Aug. 31. Because the decision was made late, Carey decided to wait and make her album good instead of rushed. As you can read in this column, the album is done and very, very good.

Whitney’s album is being released officially on Aug. 31. It’s been moved up a day from Sept. 1. I’m just sayin’…let’s get this stuff right. It ain’t rocket science.

Carey, by the way, cancelled a bunch of dates once the album was completed, and went on a late, delayed summer vacation. She has a big fall ahead, with the album release and the Lee Daniels Oscar movie, “Precious.”

Seriously.....
Yesterday evening/night, fans went crazy obsessed about a leaked snippet putted online by people seeking for attention and desperate to have followers on their Twitter page.
I personnally didn't listen, I never listen to any leaks, snippets or not , it spoils the surprise to discover a track (legally), but that's me.  But I can understand some fans going nuts to hear a lil' something, after all it's been sooooooooooooooooooooo long we didn't hear anything new from Mariah, right?
However, there's a big difference between wanting to hear a lil' snippet and begging and begging to have a full song and even more.....

About that leaked snippet, I hope it will stay a snippet, we don't need to spoil a chance for that track going far in the charts and why not, having an Oscar nomination

Sometimes, I wish there would be some more agressive action like that label, IDJ, let's go!!!!!!!!

"it's like a big 'Kiss my butt' to the Grammy folks"
Mariah Carey is refusing to be pushed around by the Grammys anymore.

The songbird, who has won a mere five awards out of 21 nominations since 1991, is officially taking herself out of the running this year. She'll release her album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" on Sept. 29, missing the Grammy cutoff date.

"Mariah's been shafted so many times before that it's like a big 'Kiss my butt' to the Grammy folks," says a music industry insider. "She doesn't need the awards, because her career is already so successful."

The diva definitely doesn't need trophies to sell her album: "Memoirs" has already spawned the hit single, "Obsessed" and has generated heavy industry buzz.

Although the singer just rescheduled a series of promotional appearances on programs like the "Today" show and "VH1 Storytellers," the insider says Carey is just busy adding more songs to her album, wanting the end result to be perfect.

In addition to her CD, the singer is drawing rave reviews for her performance as a Harlem-based social worker in the indie flick "Precious." The Lee Daniels-directed movie debuted earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Meanwhile, fans hoping for a Battle of the Divas will be disappointed to learn that Whitney Houston's new CD will be released nearly a month earlier than Mariah's.

Whit should be thankful she's avoiding a showdown with Mimi. Her album's first single, "I Look to You," received a lukewarm reception on pop radio, finally debuting on Billboard's Hot 100 last week at No. 74. Mariah, meanwhile, blasted onto that chart at No. 11 with "Obsessed."

Mariah Wants to Know What Love Is: Covers Foreigner
Foreigner’s Mick Jones can start ordering caviar and Champagne again: Mariah Carey is releasing her own gospel-tinged version of his masterwork song, “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

It’s the first “real” single from her new album following the summer release of the witty “Obsessed,” which is also included on “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel.” The album and the single hit the world on Sept. 29th.

I heard the Foreigner song yesterday along with all of “Memoirs” and let me tell you: Mariah’s got a hit on her hands along the lines of “Emancipation of Mimi “The hour-long CD is ballad-centric. Written and produced with The Dream and Tricky (I know, but these are their stage names), “Memoirs” boasts a lot of singles. Starting with the Foreigner song is a canny move in these uncertain times. By the time its run is over, a new generation will think “I Want to Know What Love Is” is a Mariah Carey song.

Mick Jones, who wrote it, should start picking out some nice new cars thanks to Carey. The money should come rolling in quickly.

The other songs on the album — these are the titles, although the running order is still being finalized: “Betcha,” “Obsessed,” “H.A.T.E.U.,” “Candy Bling,” “Ribbon,” “Standing O’s.,” “Impossible,” “It’s a Wrap,” “Inseparable,” “Up Out My Face,” “More than Just Friends,” and “Angels Cry.”

Several of these are radio ready. “Angels Cry” is an honest-to-god ballad a la “Vision of Love,” and should be a gigantic success. “Standing O’s” also has potential, as do “H.A.T.E.U.” — which stands for “having a typical emotional upset” — and “Inseparable.”

Def Jam’s L.A. Reid — who previewed the CD for the first time yesterday with a clutch of staffers — is playing with the order, to get it right. But he really can’t go wrong. Carey’s album, is, as they used to say, “what the kids want.” Plus, it’s got stuff for the slightly older crowd. I loved the doo-woppy “It’s a Wrap.” And the Foreigner track is so powerful, it’s going to be everywhere.

Good news, too: no more songs about Eminem. One was plenty.

So, by the end of September we’ll have new CDs from Whitney and from Mariah. They’re each top notch and different from each other enough that their fans should want them both. Maybe we’ll see a return to record stores (we have but a few in Manhattan now) and diva duels on radio if programmers are smart.

Mariah on charity single in memory of Michael Jackson ?
According to Blick Switzerland, Mariah will be featured on the song "Living Your Dreams" produced by Lichtenstein producer/singer Al Walser along with Jermaine Jackson. A part of the royalties will go to the Swizz charity "Wunderlampe" which helps making dreams come true (mainly for ill children). However on Wunderlampe's site they only quote artists Patrick Nuo, Nubya, Tanja Dankner, Hedreich Nichols and Jesse Brown.
I also checked several sites and even on Al Walser channel on YouTube, we can see the artists and also Jermaine and Jason Miller, but no Mariah mention.  The single will be released on August 29.
Wait and see...

Mariah Revs Up New CD, Returns to Powerhouse PR
Mariah Carey—despite idiotic postings elsewhere—is gearing up for her big new CD release.
Mariah feels so strongly about “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel” that she’s even re-hired the PR powerhouse that made her second-stage career such a success. She’s back with Cindi Berger of PMK HBH. It was Berger who made her “Emancipation of Mimi” the biggest hit of Mariah’s career. Smart move.

Of course, that means both Mariah and Whitney Houston are now being repped by the same PR company. PMK’s Kristen Foster is handling Whitney with my old pal, Jill Fritzo.

“Memoirs” was scheduled for an August 25th release, then moved to September 15th. Now it’s set for September 29th. If the regular Grammy deadline had been in place—September 30th—Mariah would have made it. But the unfortunate early deadline of August 31st cut her off. So she has some slack time to get “Memoirs” just right.

The first single from Mariah’s CD will not be “Obsessed”—that was just a summer trifle, and it was a lot of fun. The real first official single is said to be a powerhouse ballad along the lines of “Vision of Love.”

Heroes note:, I don't even know what to say, it's full of mistakes.  Weird that Roger Friedman says "Obsessed" is not the first single as Mariah herself, IDJ, iTunes and so on.... said so.... and Cindi who made TEOM Mariah's biggest hit???? errrrrrr......

Cindi Berger is Mariah's publicist again...

Why Is Mariah Carey Canceling Events?
Reports that Mariah Carey has rescheduled several upcoming appearances has left many fans wondering if something might be wrong with the singer.

Carey, 40, had been tentatively set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Aug. 25, perform on Today Aug. 28, and also tape an episode of VH1's Storytellers.

But the singer's publicist Cindi Berger tells PEOPLE there is no reason for concern: "These dates have been postponed and not cancelled," she said Friday.

A source says the singer is completing her new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, the release of which has been pushed to Sept. 29.

"Record release dates change all the time," Berger confirms. "It's nothing unusual and it doesn't signal anything. There are a lot of moving parts to Mariah's professional life … She's making sure the record is how she wants it to be and its no big deal."

In addition to working on her album, Carey is launching another perfume line and promoting her upcoming film, Precious, which is produced by Oprah Winfrey and opens in November.

The reason for the calendar re-jiggering is explained further on Carey's official Website: "Mariah is putting the finishing touches on her newest album, and we have shifted all of our TV and promo appearances to coincide with the new release date of September 29th. We can't wait for the fans to hear the new album!!"

What????? Good-bye to "Obsessed"???  No way, don't let it die until the new single comes out!!!!!

Song of the Summer: Fancy Seeing You Again, Drake
We’ve seen ’em come and go this summer (remember Rob Thomas?). Mariah Carey has been rock-solid so far, but this week we say good-bye to her as well; all the album-release pushbacks and cancelled promotional appearances aren't what “Obsessed” needs to stay afloat.

Mariah Carey Bets on 'Forever' Perfume

Mariah Carey takes her happiness seriously. That’s why she has named her new women’s scent “Forever.” It’s due out in September.

“I am in a wonderful place right now, surrounded by all the things I love, and Forever captures this moment in time,” said the entertainer, whose first scent, M by Mariah Carey, launched in September 2007.

“When we work with celebrities, we aim to put together a project which is representative of their life,” said Ron Rolleston, executive vice president for global fragrance marketing at Elizabeth Arden, of the new women’s launch. “Mariah’s happily married, has a movie coming out in November, which already did well at Sundance, and she is releasing a new album in September. She’s got a lot of joy and optimism in her life right now, and we wanted to express that in a fragrance.”

Perfumer Olivier Gillotin of Givaudan worked with Carey to create the modern opulent floral, which has top notes of neroli, lotus blossom and dewy green apple; a heart of tuberose and gardenia, and a drydown of white musk and exotic woods. “When I first met with Mariah, I was inspired to create a glamorous, opulent floral,” said Gillotin. “I wanted the scent to be radiant but to also evoke a warm sensuality. This fragrance has iconic white florals, which convey a powerful message of feminine sensuality and classic glamour.”

The collection includes eau de parfum in three sizes — 1 oz. for $42, 1.7 oz. for $55 and 3.3 oz. for $65 — as well as a 0.5-oz. parfum, $250, and a 6.8-oz. body lotion, $28.

In the U.S., the scent will be available in about 2,000 department and specialty store doors, including Macy’s, Dillard’s and Belk’s.

The bottle, inspired by Carey’s love of the art deco style, is clear crystal with a gold band around the top. Outer packaging is bright pink with a metallic trim.

While executives declined to discuss sales projections, industry sources estimated that Forever would do upwards of $35 million at retail in its first year on counter. Sources also estimated Arden would spend at least $10 million on advertising and promotion.

Print advertising, shot by Michael Thompson and featuring Carey, will break in October fashion, beauty and lifestyle magazines, including Elle, Vogue, Glamour and In Style. A TV campaign, which also features Carey, is slated for the holiday season. As well, vials on card, scented strips and other scented pieces are expected to deliver upwards of 49 million scented impressions, noted Noreen Dodge, senior vice president, fragrance, global brand development for Elizabeth Arden.

In addition to a dedicated Web site, MariahCareyBeauty.com, a strong social media campaign will also be part of the campaign, Dodge said. Arden plans MariahCareyBeauty pages on Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, hoping to leverage Carey’s 1.7 million followers on Twitter and 700,000 Facebook fans (Carey also has 132 fan separate fan pages on Facebook.) Arden is also working with social media sites Imeem, Pandora and VideoEgg to further drive business. Pandora will create Carey fragrance-branded backgrounds for users to see while listening to the singer’s music, while Imeem will feature an exclusive Forever-themed playlist customized by Carey on its home page. VideoEgg will feed into Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube in an effort to drive traffic to MariahCareyBeauty.com. DailyCandy will offer a “twitter-to-win” sampling program for the fragrance, and Sugar Inc. plans a customized Carey page on its site and a sweepstakes to win the scent.

Tracks reviewed by Australian magazine
Rhyme & Reason Magazine was this afternoon treated to an exclusive preview of Mariah Carey’s 12th studio album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. A single CD containing six songs from the album was flown in to Sydney [Australia] from Island Def Jam’s New York offices, accompanied by an IDJ representative. Taking every precaution to avoid leaks of Mariah’s new material, phones and recording devices were cloaked before the listening session, with the lone CD set to return to New York along with the IDJ representative.

The release of Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel has been delayed until September 29th as Mariah continues to write and record material alongside a collaborator who is understood to be a writer she worked with in the earlier part of her career. Along with the six cuts previewed by Rhyme & Reason, an additional five or six songs are expected to round out the album.

Mariah has entrusted much of the album’s production duties to Tricky Stewart and The-Dream, while long-time friend and collaborator Jermaine Dupri also makes a return for Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, along with hit-maker Carlos “Los DaMystro” McKinney [Usher, R. Kelly, Whitney Houston].

Mariah co-wrote all of the songs previewed, save for “I Want To Know What Love Is” - the remake of Foreigner’s chart-topping 1985 single. “I Want To Know What Love Is” is expected to be the album’s next single.

While we don’t want to give too much away, below is Rhyme & Reason Magazine’s brief breakdown of the six songs previewed from Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel:

“CANDY BLING”
Credits: Written by Mariah Carey, Carlos McKinney and Terius Nash. Conducted and produced by Los DaMystro for DaMystro Music LLC/Music Line Entertainment, LLC and produced by Terius “The-Dream” Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: A laidback, mid-tempo track set to finger-snaps. At one point, Mariah makes mention of bringing “ODB back”.

“OBSESSED”
Credits: Written and produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. “Tricky” Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Terius “The-Dream” Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: You should all be familiar with this one…

“H.A.T.E. U”
Credits: Written and produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. “Tricky” Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Terius “The-Dream” Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: A slower-tempo song which has Mariah wanting to square off with a trifling partner; “I can’t wait to face you / I can’t wait to hate you”.

“STANDING O”
Credits: Written and produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. “Tricky” Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Terius “The-Dream” Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: The “O”, of course, stands for “Ovation”. This is an unmistakable Dream concoction laid over mid-tempo staccato piano chords and plush synths. The chorus includes Mariah mimicking Dream’s signature “oh, oh” vocal punctuations.

“IMPOSSIBLE”
Credits: Written and produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. “Tricky” Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Terius “The-Dream” Nash for Radio Killa Records.
Description: A woozy, somewhat minimalist slow jam.

“I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS”
Credits: Written by Mick Jones. Produced by Mariah Carey for Maroon Entertainment, Inc., C. “Tricky” Stewart for RedZone Entertainment and Big Jim.
Description: Staying true to the original, this piano-lead remake is less an overhaul of the classic 80’s hit than it is a modest but impressive update.

Mariah Carey and Usher on the Macy's and Feeding America "Come Together" campaign

Launching mid-September, the campaign celebrates crafting your own meals ("Julie and Julia" comes to mind!) and hosting at home, while serving the loftier goal of feeding 10 million people suffering from hunger.

The "Come Together" rally invites friends and families across the country to host dinners at home and ask guests to pledge a donation to Feeding America in place of the usual host gift through Macy's "Come Together" website. The retailer will generously match each donation made for the campaign.

Joining in on the charitable spirit is a diverse group of celebrities, including Mariah Carey, Usher, Jessica Simpson, Queen Latifah, Martha Stewart, Emeril Lagasse, new baby-daddy Tommy Hilfiger and Donald Trump, who will help kick off the campaign through TV guest spots directed by Barry Sonnenfeld of "Men in Black" fame.

Plus, Macy's will be hosting the "World's Largest Dinner Party" during New York Fashion Week (looks like Lady Gaga, Marc Jacobs and V magazine has competition!) at the Herald Square flagship on Sept. 15. Expect a crowd of A-listers and customers along with Macy's Culinary Council that includes Emeril Lagasse, Todd English and entertaining mogul Martha Stewart.

With food especially short this fall and 12 million children at risk of going hungry, Macy's early Thanksgiving comes just in time.

Mariah's slow-moving "Angel"
Mariah Carey is said to be scrambling to complete her new album, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel." "She's getting very nervous now that Whitney Houston is coming back," said our source. We're told Carey signed with manager Chris Lighty four months ago, but the album still isn't finished. Lighty told Page Six by e-mail, "My management company is dealing with [Mariah's] music, brand extensions and commercial opportunities. We love Mariah." Carey hasn't had a music manager since splitting with Benny Medina last September and has only released one single -- "Obsessed" -- off the album so far. We tried to get more details from Lighty, but he told us he was "at the beach" and couldn't talk. When we called her p.r. firm, a rep said, "We are no longer working with Mariah."

BBC 1Xtra Radio DJ and official Def Jam UK Launch parties DJ reviews the tracks
Note: I know DJ G Child is a Mariah fan too

From the tracks I heard, only two of them I really liked, the rest thought were very average.

The 2 stand out tracks for me were:

Candy Bling - A nice slow smoothed out tune which had The Dream & Tricky Stewart's sound all over it for those of you who are familiar with their beats. However I can't see this track being a single, but a wicked album track.

I Want To Know What Love Is - This is Mariah's cover version of the 80's Classic originally recorded by Foreigner, this is easily a single and will be a world wide smash!

As for the other tracks I heard, none of them grabbed me at all, in fact some of them actually bored me if I'm honest with you. What we heard was only a few tracks that may be on the album, but we were told the album is still in the making, so I'm looking forward to hearing more...

Will Jermaine be on "Memoirs"?????
Super-producer Jermaine Dupri may have left his post at Island Def Jam over six months ago, but he still has some negative feelings towards the label.

"Once I realized I was basically on my own in that building, I said 'it's time for me to get out of here.' I saw the decline of Def Jam and I was just like 'I don't want to be apart of a sinking ship.'"

"They have bigger problems to deal with, I mean I'm not running around like 'f--- Def Jam!' I'm just saying I would not really deal with them ever again."

"They don't really care about the new artists, they don't care about establishing artist."

Daily Star reviews Mariah's 6 tracks!
Kim Dawson from the Daily Star
I’ve had a sneaky preview of six tracks from 40-year-old Mariah Carey’s new album Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel, out on September 14.

Her 12th opus boasts collaborations with artists including The-Dream, 27, and Timbaland, 38. Here’s my verdict so far:

Candy Bling: A melodic, mid-tempo soul shaker with understated vocals that leave you thoroughly detoxed. Not the booty-trembling hip-hop anthem you’d expect from the title. 4/5

Obsessed: The hard-hitting yet elegant lead single has MC declaring: “It must be the weed, it must be the E/’Cause you be poppin’, you get it poppin’.” Eminem bating? Possibly – but definitely biting. 4/5

H.A.T.E. U: Mariah has invited fans to guess the meaning of the track’s initials, but it’s clear it stands for a lady in love as she purrs through a hypnotic, musical aphrodisiac. 4/5

Standing O: The O is officially for ovation but, given the intimacy of this tune, it must be a double entendre. A toe-tapper but not quite a show-stopper. 3/5

Impossible: MC loves you “like a milkshake”, although the melody isn’t quite as full-flavoured as you’d hope. 2/5

I Want To Know What Love Is: Foreigner’s cheesy 80s signature power ballad, given the Carey treatment and complete with choir and karaoke climax. It’s a great re-work. 5/5

Ouch.... and don't blame UK media, the bashing is in the US too, just google AGT

So tired Mariah’s just dire
Mariah used to be on fi-ah. But no longer.
While UK Brrrap pack artists such as TINCHY STRYDER and DJ IRONIK take soul and R'n'B in exciting new directions, veteran CAREY is left looking tired and irrelevant.

No more so than on new album Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel.

I was played a selection of tracks from the CD, due on September 14, and they left me feeling that the diva has run out of steam.

The collection has been billed as her most personal so far, harking back to the sound of her mid-Nineties heyday.

But its reliance on bland, dated-sounding, dreary R'n'B bored me to tears.

Cliched lyrics about things being better "back in the day" and loving someone like "Kool Aid" don't help either.

A cover of FOREIGNER's I Want To Know What Love Is was competent at best.

And with little of her trademark vocal pyrotechnics on display I can't find much to recommend what I heard.

There's still more tracks to finish before the album hits the shelves.

I just hope they're not as bad as the one's she's already handed in...

Mariah to release collector's set

Mariah Carey fans who go to the store to pick up her new album on September 15 better bring extra cash.

Island Def Jam will release a three CD collector’s set the same day as Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, Rap-Up.com has learned. The box set will include the songbird’s first three Island albums, 2002’s Charmbracelet, 2005’s The Emancipation of Mimi, and 2008’s E=MC², and be sold at a special low price. The packaging will have space for a fourth CD (hint, hint).

In addition, those who purchase the collector’s set will receive a Mariah poster to remind them of all the money they just spent.

More from the UK listening session
A message was given at the beginning of the listening session:
"Taking Mariah's career in the UK very seriously"
"Her most soulful intimate record"
We're not allowed to do an album review because they only played 6 songs.

1. Candy Bling - "Back in the Day"
2. Obsessed - (everyone knew this one and started to talk, how rude)
3. H.A.T.E U - the old musical toybox intro, winner.
4. Standing O - "you're the man of the hour / i might have to buy you some flowers"
5. Impossible - another slow one, backing vocal like a quiet minnie ripperton.
6. I Wanna Know What Love Is - Her voice sounds like a panpipe. There is much excitement in the room. This cover is epic, career changing and clearly going to be massive.

Review from Zoe who attented the listening session in London
1) Candy Bling - a very slow number that showcases Mariah’s unique vocal range. One to put on the iPod and play when someone is pissing you off on the tube / bus as it totally chills you out.

(2) Obsessed - the first single and my favourite as it’s more of a dancey number. I am OBSESSED with this song and sing along when it’s on the radio

(3) H.A.T.E U - another slow number - very e=mc2- but then if you have a winning formula, why change it.

(4) Standing 0 - what a cool title for a song! By visualisng a standing ovation, Mariah is totally gonna get one.

(5) Impossible - slow but SEXY in homage to Nick Cannon, I think. She sings ‘U did the impossible…’ and ‘I love you Like…’

(6) I want to Know What Love is - cover of The Foreigner’s classic. Mariah makes it sound so beauitful, it makes you dwell on the lyrics differently. And it shows she wants to properly entertain people - nobody would have expected her to do this.  I actually cheered in congratulations when this song ended and I wasn’t the only one.

No special booklet in Belgian cd
As expected, Belgium (like most of European countries I guess) will not release "Memoirs" with the special add booklet.  In a way, it does make sense as most of those brands are not available on the European market.

Mariah to be part of Jackson tribute release?
Madonna, Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Robbie Williams are among a host of stars reportedly planning to record a charity album of Michael Jackson's greatest hits.

Whitney Houston, Usher, Britain's Got Talent's Shaheen Jafargholi, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie and Take That are also being linked to the tribute album, according to the Daily Star.

The newspaper reports that after several huge stars performed the King of Pop's hits at his memorial service, producers are asking them to record their favourite Jacko songs in tribute to the singer, who died suddenly on June 25 aged 50.

A source said: "The idea came from the memorial concert. Many fans asked if cover versions would be released and it seemed a wonderful idea.

"Some the biggest stars in the world have indicated they'd like to take part to pay their own respects and tribute to the King of Pop.

"This covers album is sure to be a massive worldwide hit with fans and could raise a fortune for Michael's favourite charities."

A live tribute concert is reportedly being planned at London's 02 Arena, involving the late singer's family and other guests, on what would have been his 51st birthday on August 29.

"Memoirs" listening preview in Hong Kong
A listening preview was held in Hong Kong and 6 songs from "Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel" were played.

- "Obsessed"

- "Candy Bling" - Mariah's slowest jam to date, I can't quite think of a song to compare it to.  Very nice flow with initmate feeling. In the middle when Mariah sings 'STOP', there is a pause with no music (similar to WBT when she sings 'too deep), bass is heavy, very slow and soulful jam.

- "Standing Ovation" -  Very Mary J. Blige imo, 'Standing O-O-O-O-O.....' Another urban/r&b type song. Similar style to Obsessed with a little gangster feel. With 'oh oh oh' in chorus part. There are more electric effects and a special ending.

- "H-A-T-E-U" - The overall melody and production is the same as the The-Dream track and the baby sound is still there.

- "Impossible" -  Another slow ballad.... very Blackstreet... Jodeci references in the lyrics...

- " I Want To Know What Love Is' - It's got that whole TTR vibe... breathy 1st chorus, then it's bring on the choir.

The Monetization of Mimi: Mariah CD to Have Ads

As music sales continue to drop like they’re not so hot throughout the industry, Island Def Jam Music Group is jamming on a new business model: integrating brands into artists’ CD booklets.

The first deal, created for the Mariah Carey release Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel on Sept. 15, is a 34-page co-production with Elle magazine that includes lifestyle ads from Elizabeth Arden, Angel Champagne, Carmen Steffens, Le Métier de Beauté and the Bahamas Board of Tourism. Providing the experiment goes well, the label is eyeing bigger brand deals for booklets of CDs by Rihanna, Bon Jovi, Kanye West and other artists.

The mini magazine contains Mariah-centric editorial (“VIP Access to Her Sexy Love Life,” “Amazing Closet,” “Recording Rituals”) and lifestyle advertising along with lyrics and other CD booklet elements. Elle contributed the editorial and designed the layout.

The booklets were created for the first run of U.S. CDs (1 million) and the first 500,000 overseas, said Jeff Straughn, svp-strategic marketing for Island Def Jam Music Group. It will also be available in a digital format for those who buy music online. A condensed version of the Mariah mag, sans the 14 pages of CD-specific material, will be inserted into 500,000 subscription copies of Elle’s October issue, which arrives mid-September.

“The idea was really simple thinking: ‘We sell millions of records, so you should advertise with us,’” said  Antonio “L.A.” Reid, chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, a unit of Universal Music Group. “My artists have substantial circulation—when you sell 2 million, 5 million, 8 million, that’s a lot of eyeballs. Most magazines aren’t as successful as those records.”
Carey was “very open” to the concept when Reid showed her a mock-up of the booklet in a magazine format that included brand imagery synonymous with her lifestyle. “I wouldn’t want to do Mariah Carey and Comet abrasive cleaner,” Reid said, laughing. “I wanted things that really reflected her taste.”

Reid said the program was unprecedented. Terry Dry, president of Los Angeles-based digital-word-of-mouth marketing agency Fanscape, agreed, saying that the CD booklet advertising is a first, though he wouldn’t be surprised if more labels look into doing the same thing: “Hollywood Records [Disney], I know they love to monetize all over the place for something like a Jonas Brothers record. Open any rap record and a couple of inserts will come flying out, usually for a business the artist is a part of. I wouldn’t be surprised if 50 Cent had a Vitaminwater thing.”

Labels are looking for ways to eke out extra bucks, borrow equity and cut costs anywhere they can today. Year-to-date album sales were down 13.9 percent for the week ending July 19, 2009, compared with the period last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan (227 million units vs. 195.5 million units). Of those 2009 sales, 18.9 percent, or 41.9 million, were digital.
Ad revenues are subsidizing 100 percent of Island Records’ costs for the Carey booklet, but label execs also see the alliance as a way to expand distribution at a time when the local music store is becoming as rare as the Beatles’ Yesterday and Today LP with the “Butcher” cover.

“We don’t have music retailers any more, so a smart consumer products company that understands the value in distributing music is going to restore the vitality of our business,” Reid speculated. “If we distribute music properly and if it’s done tastefully, it could be a huge profit center for all of us. That is the missing link—we need partnerships.”

To underscore the point: At one large retail establishment, partner Elizabeth Arden is allowing the label to cross-promote the release. The CD Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel will be merchandised directly outside Walmart’s music aisle with Carey’s new signature Arden fragrance, Forever, which has its ad on the booklet’s back cover. The CD and scent will also be displayed together in the beauty department.
