The proud owner of more No. 1 US singles than Elvis, Carey's tally of 18 is second only to The Beatles (who have 21) and light years ahead of "pop culture icon" Madonna.

She has five Grammy Awards, 17 World Music Awards, 11 American Music Awards and 31 Billboard Music Awards to her credit but unlike Whitney and Celine, Mariah is not only a singer and actress but a songwriter and record producer.

Don't be fooled by the choice of venue for the first show of Mariah Carey's first Australian tour in 15 years.

Carey, 42, is playing the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre because Jupiters has subsidised the show (just as Mike Gore did with Whitney and Frank at Sanctuary Cove).

If they hadn't, she wouldn't be playing the Gold Coast at all.

Speaking exclusively to Insider ahead of her tour here next week, the American singing superstar says she is looking forward to bringing husband Nick Cannon and their children Down Under.

"Darling, I plan to give my lambs in Australia my all so we can share in the experience together," Carey says, referring to her loyal fan base, just as Lady Gaga calls her followers "little monsters".

Carey last visited Australia in 1998 when she brought her Butterfly world tour here, featuring a cameo from Olivia Newton-John for a duet of Hopelessly Devoted To You.

"It is really hard to make sure I see all of my fans around the world," she says. "It has been a case of waiting for the right time to make the trip."

Carey says she's enjoyed strong support from Australian fans during more than 20 years in the business.

"I have been so lucky with my career and my fans are really diverse, ranging from those that have stuck by me right from the beginning to my new fans who have joined along the way," she says. "I have the best fans in the world and they know that's how I feel. My fans and I have an incredibly strong connection. Since the beginning they have named themselves the lambs, it was just something I used to say to them."

Carey, 42, holds multiple world records and is regarded as one of the top-selling female artists of all time.

Since breaking onto the scene with her self-titled debut album in 1990, she's enjoyed hit after hit with songs including Emotions, Dream Lover, I'll Be There, Hero

and Fantasy.

Carey has notched up sales of more than 200 million and amassed an awards collection that includes five Grammys, 17 World Music Awards and 31 Billboard Music Awards.

"There are so many women who helped pioneer the music business for all of us," she says when asked of her inspirations. "Really, there's too many to name. For example, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Patti LaBelle and Chaka Khan."

Carey finds it equally hard to pinpoint a favourite song.

"I don't have one," she says. "My taste in music is so diverse it varies from day to day. Music has always been my saving grace and there are so many songs that have been the soundtrack to my life."

Carey's husband will perform DJ sets across the country marking the first time the couple will perform on the same bill together. Anthony Callea and Andrew De Silva will also perform support slots.

The tour starts at Jupiters on the Gold Coast on January 1 and heads to Sydney's Allphones Arena two days later. Both shows are sold out with a limited number of tickets released last week for her gig at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium on January 5.

"I remember what a beautiful country Australia is and what incredible fans I have there," she says of her last visit here. "The absolute highlight of the trip was swimming with dolphins in Perth. They are so beautiful and that experience really stayed with me."

Carey and Cannon, 32,

were married in the Bahamas in 2008.

Their one-year-old twins, Monroe, a girl, and Moroccan, a boy, will travel with the couple and Carey is anxious to make sure they get to see some of the local tourist sites, as well as our unique flora and fauna.

"Of course I'll be with Nick and the babies, it is the holidays," she says.

"I really want my babies to see the kangaroos, the koalas and the dolphins."

Carey recently signed on to the judging panel of American Idol alongside Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson.

"The most important thing to me is being able to work with some deserving contestants," she says of the new gig. "There are so many that are truly talented and I'm really excited to be a part of helping them realise their dreams."

When Access Hollywood asked Mariah on Wednesday afternoon if the two were getting along and had buried the hatchet, the singing superstar completely avoided addressing the question.

“Christmas time is in here again,” she said. “Have you heard ‘All I Want For Christmas’? My song… I heard something really good about it today.” 

She said the toughest part has been getting used to judging.

“This is something that I’ve obviously never done before. I’ve been learning as I ‘ve been going, but I think I bring something to the table as someone who really, really struggled as a kid, just even with like my identity with what I wanted — my dream, which was so huge and I knew that I would never give up and that’s a quality that’s essential when you’re doing this,” she said. “Sometimes, it’s like you see these kids, or these contestants and it’s like they have a great voice or a good voice, but they don’t have ‘that,’ so it’s a fine line, it’s a delicate balance and it’s interesting. I’m enjoying it.”

Mimi’s revelation comes just weeks after the network released a new promo of Idol, which showed the new judge shedding tears while talking about mentoring young minds.

The 42-year-old singer and other judges are currently in Hollywood filming new episodes of Season 13.

“I think the most surprising thing is how attached you can get to a contestant,” Carey also said on Wednesday.

“It’s like, if I disagree with the rest of the panel, it’s almost like, at this point, ‘No, don’t lose that person!’”

Whether you love or hate her decision to take on the hit talent competition that is "American Idol," Mariah Carey is doing it and she's "happy and honored" to be there.

What you might not have known is that Nick Cannon, her husband, was actually behind the final decision.

Speaking out during a press conference Wednesday, Carey admitted that Nick, who is actually host of "America's Got Talent," thought it would be an amazing opportunity.

"He really wanted me to do this and I had my own kind of reservations -- I didn't know how I would adapt to this situation," says Carey. "But it’s great to be here, I'm happy and honored to be here."

Not underestimating the power of the brand (look no further than Jennifer Lopez's resurgence), Carey says this is a "huge deal."

"It’s a huge deal. This is massive. It’s one of the biggest television shows ever," says Carey. "It changed the way we look at music and changed people’s vocabularies.

'American Idol': Mariah Carey 'Had Reservations' About Joining Judges' Panel
When she was just starting out in the music industry looking for her big break, certain avenues weren’t available for a young Mariah Carey -- specifically, a show like American Idol.

So now that she’s a multi-platinum recording artist sitting at the judges’ table for the Fox singing competition, she looks at the contestants and empathizes with their journey.

“I get really attached to certain people for different reasons, whether it’s a story or mainly the talent,” Carey told reporters on Wednesday, as the competition was whittling down Hollywood Week contenders. “I see myself in some of the contestants when I first started.”

Carey, who joined the panel this fall alongside Idol mainstay Randy Jackson and newbies Nicki MInaj and Keith Urban, added that she isn’t sure she would have put herself through the same scrutiny in her early years.

“I'm glad I didn't do a show like this,” she said. “I would've hated it! I learned on stage how to perform and what I realized  is the best advice for them is to just be themselves, because that’s what really sells now."

With that said, Carey is fully present on America's most popular TV show. “It’s a huge deal,” she said. “This is massive. It’s one of the biggest television shows ever. It changed the way we look at music and changed people’s vocabularies. Pitchy? Thank you, Randy for that!”

As for her own role, Carey said she likes to think of herself "more of a fairy godmother” than a judge. Her method: "I try to speak frankly but as kind as possible," she said. "But not sugar-coating ... that won’t do anyone any good."

What else does she bring to the judges' table? Three decades of wisdom earned through experience. Said Carey: "As a recording artist and producer and writer, [it's] helped me get to this point where I can sit there and say, 'I'm not sure if you hit this part correctly,' or, 'You weren't quite prepared to blend the harmony with this person singing way louder than you.' These things I’ve known for more than half my life."

Naturally, knowing how popular Carey's hits are among Idol hopefuls, we had to ask: what's it like to hear one of your own songs performed for you? "It's funny," said Carey of the approximately four contestants who tried it. "Sometimes I'm, like, 'What do I do if it wasn't the best performance?' But I treat it like anybody's song. One of them actually used a song from my first album, and it was obscure and took me by surprise." Ironically, she added, "It was the song when I almost sold my publishing. They wanted this song, and told me they would give me $5,000. Fortunately, I said no!"

When it came to taking Idol's offer, Carey explained that it was her husband Nick Cannon, host of NBC's America's Got Talent, who helped convince her. "He really wanted me to do this and I had my own kind of reservations -- I didn't know how I would adapt to this situation." she said. "But it’s great to be here, I'm happy and honored to be here."

The new season of American Idol hasn't aired yet, but the judges have already spent enough time together to become 'a family,' as Randy Jackson referred the group on Wednesday, and every family comes with a fair share of disagreements.

"Sometimes I'm kind of shocked as to what certain people think should go through," said Mariah Carey, who described the new judges' panel as "quite varied." Mariah went on to clarify, "And sometimes we're all in agreement and it's obvious and there it is."

As no group of judges has been like-minded on every decision, the important thing is that they respect each other's opinion -- something Ryan Seacrest says they've excelled at.

"Last night I saw us all sitting at a round table after the auditions, having a good laugh and talking about what a great process this Hollywood week is going to be," Ryan said. "So far so good."

As far as what viewers can expect this season, Nicki Minaj promises "craziness," saying, "Sometimes I have two heads when I come on set, and you know what? That's how it's supposed to be."

American Idol's two-night season premiere airs Wednesday, January 16 and Thursday, January 17 at 8/7c on FOX.

Mariah Carey's 'All I Want for Christmas' Re-Enters, Finally Hits Top 40 On Hot 100 
The singer's 1994 holiday chestnut returns at a new peak, as titles of any era are, as of this year, eligible to appear on the list if ranking in the top 50.
Eighteen years after its release, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 at last.

With airplay and sales for holiday hits increasing, the track, from Carey's 1994 album "Merry Christmas," re-enters the chart at No. 29, a new peak position. "Christmas" had logged one prior frame on the chart, reaching No. 83 the week of Jan. 8, 2000. It didn't reach the Hot 100 upon its original release, as it was not available as a commercial single in 1994; per chart rules at the time, such tracks were not eligible to appear on the Hot 100. The carol did, however, rise to No. 12 on the Radio Songs chart the week of Jan. 7, 1995 (the highest rank for a holiday song in the chart's 22-year history).

Per current rules, any title, regardless of age, is eligible for the chart if it ranks in the top 50. Hot 100 rules changed at the beginning of the 2012 chart year to include titles of any era should they place in the list's top half

Carey's original "Christmas" returns to the Hot 100 with digital sales of 69,000 (up 79%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It bounds 37-19 on Digital Songs and leads Holiday Digital Songs for a fourth consecutive week. (The song has sold 2.3 million download to date). On Holiday Airplay, "Christmas" receives Greatest Gainer honors, lifting 7-5 with 26 million in audience (up 17%), according to Nielsen BDS. It re-enters Radio Songs at No. 48. "Christmas" tops the Holiday Songs chart, which measures sales, airplay and streaming, for a third week in a row.

As you learned these last two years with Jennifer Lopez, having "Idol" as a platform during an album cycle can be really powerful. Was that the plan as well with Mariah?
For me, it's about Mariah being one of the greatest singers of all time. It's funny, these kids come on and they're trying to sing her songs in front of her. It tickles me, I just laugh. You got some bold kids out there today, man. She's making a very, very hot record, I'm really happy. It's gonna be a great 2013, dude, we gonna fire it up.

The song has massive airplay and if you look at iTunes (I know it doesn't reflect it all) it's up in a lot of countries with highlights in the UK, Ireland and the US.

Mariah's Merry Christmas goes up in a lot of countries too !!

However, even with Mariah's spectacular performance of Christmas Time Is In The Air Again at the Christmas Tree Lighting, US people didn't download it, it's nowhere to be seen, too bad...

I have NO idea why some Aussie fans were mad yesterday, I only posted what was all over the place and if it can eventually help other fans ....

As posted yesterday, Mariah will apparently be in Melbourne for an intimate concert, on January 4 (it's not the big stadium 'cause there's another event there that day). Tickets are set to go on sale on December 6, be sure to check in time as if it's an intimate gig it will sell out very quick!

And like I posted yesterday, I guess we wait for Mariah to confirm it herself !!!!

Apparently, posting (and tweeting) Mariah apparently added a concert in Melbourne got some Aussie fans mad, go figure....  It's all over the place (look at my post from yesterday).  When it was Rabat, Ischgl, Monaco I posted it too, (and helped more than needed by calling several times to Morocco from my own damn pocket) so where's the problem?  Guess I'm missing something... isn't the goal of a fan site to help fans too?

By posting it, at least I helped 2 fans who were able to take info to postpone (last minute) their holidays if needed and can now eventually manage to go to Mariah's concert and to me it's all that counts!!!

It's everywhere on radios, newspapers, bus stops so I guess we will wait for Mariah to soon announce her January 4 Melbourne concert at the Etihad Stadium.
