| Singer's film to show at festival
A documentary which takes a candid look at the life of chart-topping singer George Michael will be shown at this year's Berlin Film Festival. The 93 minute film will see Michael discussing his early days in Wham! along with his later career, including his legal battles with record label Sony and his stance against the Iraq war and American politics. It will also touch upon his turbulent personal life, including his arrest in a Beverly Hills park toilet in 1998 for "lewd behaviour", and the death of his boyfriend Anselmo Feleppa from Aids. The film, which includes previously unseen footage of the singer also features contributions from Michael's former Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley, as well as ex-Wham! backing singers Pepsi and Shirlie. Other contributors include Sting, Mariah Carey, Elton John, Noel Gallagher, Geri Halliwell and Simon Cowell. | "It's Like That" commercial release pushed
back until end March in Belgium to be closer to the album release.
Stoooop requesting "It's Like That" in Belgium Ok guys, the radios which play "It's Like That" in Belgium at the moment didn't receive the promo cd yet. Soooo, you don't need to be smart to know from where it comes. Universal Belgium told me the single is postponed for the commercial release until end March as the album is pushed back, and it's way too early to request it now. Posted on January the 31st. |
| Mariah slams toy boy rumour
Mariah Carey has slammed rumours that she’s having a hunky dory time with a toy boy. The 34-year-old was said be stepping out with a 28-year-old employee of her record label, Universal Music's Def Jam Recordings. But apparently it’s all a load of baloney. “At this stage in my life I'm not even getting into that stuff. I'm not getting tied down in any relationship. I don't have casual flings either," she told Blender magazine. Carey was married to Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola in 1993 but that ended in 1998 and in 2001; Carey admitted that she was a virgin until marrying Mottola at the tender age of 23. Since that revelation, she’s been linked to record executive Mark Sudack, baseball star Derek Jeter and singer Luis Muigel. Meanwhile, her career looks to be on the up when she releases her new album, The Emancipation of Mimi on April 11. "This was really kind of `let me have some fun.' I'm not saying anything negative about anybody from the past. I'm not dealing with an oppressive structure. Everything is OK. I'm making a record. This is fun and this is why I started singing." Trash Award
We all know how some DJ's across the world have treated Mariah and will probably continue, you can't please everyone, but as DJ you need to stay neutral, well that's what I thought untill last night. Power 92.3 (Peoria, IL, USA)'s DJ Brandon, insulted Mariah and her fans in words which show his level of education. It was not only mean and vulgar, but he said on air, words you would only expect in a cheap porn film. Several US fans from this area recorded his insults and putted the files online, sent them to Mariah's management and wrote to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission.) I encourage US fans from this area to keep requesting "It's Like That" at this station. Posted on January the 28th. |

| Z100 interview transcript
SW: Mariah Carey's on the line! MC: Hey Shelly! SW: Hi Mariah! MC: How are you? SW: I'm okay. How ya doing? MC: I'm doing great, thank you. SW: Cubby came to me and he was like, "Mariah was listening to your high-noon countdown and she heard her song was #1!" I was like, "Yes!" MC: I did. I was really excited and somebody told me about what you said yesterday. SW: Yeah, I was like, "Mariah, if you're listening again, you're #1 again." MC: I know. That was so sweet. Thank you. SW: So are you still hanging out in the studio right now? MC: Yeah, I'm here. SW: So Mariah, growing up on Long Island, did you always listen to Z100? MC: Yeah, I did. I listened to all the stations really, but Z100 is a classic. SW: You've been in the business-- I can say you're a veteran in the business now and you're still listening to Z100. We appreciate it. MC: Well I appreciate Z100. SW: You have some of the most loyal fans ever. MC: I really do. I'm so grateful for my fans, seriously. SW: I check my e-mail daily and we go through the Z-Lines daily. They are calling and requesting Mariah's "It Like That" like crazy. MC: Oh really? Well to everyone out there who's doing that, I love ya much! Thank you. SW: So, "It's Like That!" That's the new single. MC: That's my single. SW: Several of your singles, actually several of your songs were leaked on the internet that I heard. MC: Yeah, it was really weird, but you know what happened? The first one was leaked and it had a whole bunch of talking through it and noise and all that kind of stuff, and I'm like, "How can anybody even play that or hear that?" SW: Or even enjoy it right? MC: Exactly. Then another one got leaked. A piece of another one got leaked. Then this got leaked and it was clean and people started playing it and it helped us say, "Okay, this is the single to go with." So I was really, really happy because of the response and everything like that. SW: So how did you choose to work with Jermaine Dupri and Fatman Scoop on this one? MC: I went to Atlanta and Jermaine and I, you know the first song we wrote together was "Always Be My Baby". SW: Exactly, huge hit! MC: Yeah, and we've been friends forever. So LA Reid, who is the CEO of the company, he and Jermaine have had great success with Usher and everything. So he was like, "I love what you and Jermaine do together. You guys should work together on this project," even though I already had eighteen songs. So I went down there and we did two songs that I loved and then he was like, "Maybe you want to even try one more time just to see. You never know." So we went down there and we did "It's Like That" and another song called "We Belong Together," which is a ballad. It's kind of like in between "Breakdown"-- I don't know if you remember that song with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. SW: [sings] "Break break down..." MC: [sings] "Steady breakin' me on down.." SW: Yeah, I love that song. You know, I was listening to that the other day. I was like, "I want to hear some Bone and Mariah." MC: Oh really? It's kind of like a combo of that and a "One Sweet Day"-ish type of a thing. It's really hard to explain, but that's one of my favorites on the album. So we did both of those songs in a day and a half down in Atlanta. Then I came back to New York to do the vocals, because I always hide away with the engineer and do my vocals alone and I was trying to figure out what to do on the outro of the song because I always try to do something that people can sing along to at the end. Jermaine was like, "You know, Fatman Scoop might have some ideas," because he's always doing those club chants. So he called him, I called him, and it came together and he just did his thing. Then I just sang along with it. SW: Yeah, I was saying when I first heard the song with Fatman Scoop and JD on it? That is definitely going to be a club hit! MC: Yeah, it's very that. It's just about, you know when you just want to hear a song? You want to go out and have a good time? That's what this song is all about for me. SW: So Mariah, when you moved to Def Jam, they were saying that they were going to totally take your image back to how it was when you first came out and have you doing a little more singing as opposed to focusing more on the image. Has any of that taken place? How do you feel about all those comments? MC: I understand why people said that. I understand why that would be a corporate response and I have nothing negative to say about that. It's just that that's a little bit, I don't want to say controlling, but it's a little bit not what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be the music first. I think that with this project, it's all about the music being first. Last time around we had to deal with so much, "Oh, let's deal with the rumors and what was this and what was that," and everybody wanted me to have curly hair and stand there and say nothing and none of that really matters. All it is is make good music that we want to hear and have fun and sing along to or music that we can cry to or music that moves us in some way, and that's what this album is to me. That's why it's called The Emancipation of Mimi. It's not that deep. It's not "I'm changing my name." It's not anything like that. It's just the spirit of who I am. A lot of people call me Mimi that really know me, that are my really close friends or family, and it was like, "Oh, that would be a cool thing because your spirit is really shining through on this record," and so that's basically the whole thing. SW: Yeah, but you can understand where they're coming from. I know when you first came out. I remember singing on the talent show circuit and stuff. Mariah Carey, you were the one that you covered. It was like, "Let's do a Mariah Carey song." You sang more of the ballads. MC: I still do. SW: You displayed more of your octave. MC: So I think people that want to hear that are going to be really excited when they hear this album because the main thing is, I started out with, "Okay, let me sing a lot of songs in my belting register because it's going to make people happy" but then I was like, "You know what? That's not even the approach that I want to take." I want to do it if I like the song in that register. I ended up like, the song I did with Kanye West, "Stay The Night"-- SW: Oh, Mariah and Kanye! MC: Yeah. It's a cool collaboration because it's like an old school type of vibe and the register I'm singing in, a lot of people like, because it's that belting, heartfelt moment. Then, the ballads. There are so many ballads that I did with live musicians, that are like what the demo of "Vision Of Love" was type of a deal. You can tell from the singing on the end of this song is where my voice is on this record. So there's a lot of the vocalization stuff, but it's really what was right for each song. It's not about proving something. I think everybody knows I'm a singer. SW: Yeah, everybody knows that beautiful voice and yeah, I guess so. People want you to prove to them that you can still sing like that, but from an artist's point of view, you're like, "Hey, this is something I want to do." MC: Right, and I think they can hear that singing on this single and they can definitely hear it on the record. Also people would say, "Enough with the high notes. Calm down a little bit." So you've got to balance it. Some people want to tell you to tone it down. Some people want to tell you to crank it up. But my thing was, this is my record. I'm going to make the record that makes me happy and I know that my fans are going to be happy with this record because it really covers the gamut. SW: Everybody pick it up. The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey. I'm really excited about your return. MC: Oh, thank you. Well, it's always fun to talk to you and I totally appreciate your sweet message the other day over the airwaves. People were two-waying me, paging me, saying, "Shelly played this on the radio" so, it was really sweet. SW: Yeah, well listen Mariah. Have you been taking it easy? Everything's been going cool with you? MC: Oh, everything's been great. How about you? SW: Everything's fine with me. Everybody wants to know. Do you have a new man in your life? Any other marriage plans in the works or anything? MC: Marriage plans in the works. Well darling, how do I answer that? Look at the paneling on the side of the wall in the studio. It's so beautiful, isn't it? SW: Mariah's like, "I'm not going there right now!" Well listen, do you ever get back to Long Island? MC: When was the last time? I think over the summer, I was there for a minute. I was in the Hamptons for a minute. It was nice. SW: What about now? Like when you go and hang out, when you're not in the studio and stuff? When you go and hang out in the city, where do you like to go and what are your favorite places? MC: You know what? It really depends. What I've been doing lately is having people over my apartment. I have this big apartment and people never get a chance to come over because I was always like, "I don't want to mess it up." SW: "It's all pretty. I don't want to mess it up." MC: Then I was like, "Let's just make this spot the hang-out spot." SW: That's nice. Kind of like have a Super Bowl party possibly? MC: Well, I'm not the biggest sports fan, but you know. I can let everybody watch the Super Bowl in one room and we can watch Mean Girls or something in the other room. SW: What are you liking on TV now? Do you watch anything on TV? MC: You know what? I do when I get a chance. I was watching American Idol a little bit last night. SW: Uh oh! What did you think? MC: I was just watching my friend Randy Jackson because he makes me laugh. He's so funny. SW: Yeah. You think Simon's too nasty? MC: You know what? If I start commenting, then they'll comment on it. The only thing I can say is, we love Randy. SW: You were just talking about Mean Girls. Have you seen any movies lately? MC: I'm obsessed with Mean Girls. SW: Yeah, that's the old school. MC: The way I'll sit there and like me and my friends will just watch that movie over and over. Did you see it yet? SW: You know what? I haven't seen it yet. MC: You have to see that movie! SW: That's the one with Lindsay Lohan right? MC: Yes. SW: I'll have to make sure I check it out. MC: --and Rachel McAdams. It's hot tamale. You have to see it. SW: Okay, cool. Well Mariah, it's so nice talking to you. You sound great. MC: Thanks, and so do you. SW: Your CD, The Emancipation of Mimi was originally supposed to hit stores March 22, but you guys have pushed back the date to April 12. You guys go out and support Long Island's own Mariah Carey. So Mariah, go ahead and introduce your song. MC: Okay. This is Mariah Carey on Z100 and you are listening to my new single, "It's Like That". SW: On your favorite station. Rory was able to listen to the interview and here's his summary: "On Jamn945 Boston, The Ramiro and Pebbles Morning Show played their inteview with Mariah this morning, and this is what they talked about: - The last time they talked to Mariah during Charmbracelet and claimed that Pebbles was the inspriation for the title. - The Emancipation of Mimi album title and Mariah explained it, but Ramiro said it's too deep for him to understand. - The making of the album and working closely with L.A. Reid and how this album is more about like just having fun and not having to deal with a lot of issues. And that nobody was telling her that she had to make a certain kind of record dealing with drama just so they could go on Oprah and whatnot. With this album it was more fun and free. - They talked about how she went on tour and she said that was good for her voice and she "got in a good space vocally" and that "this record is vocally, the best work she has done in years by far". - Jack and his websites, and how some people come to her concerts dressed up as Jack. - This brought them to Mariah's fans and how dedicated they are, and the DJs were sayin that's a little weird and Ramiro said "you have the most pyschotic fans" and just how they defend Mariah no matter what. They were basically makin fun of the fans, but Mariah got defensive and said "well I think they just know that I actually do care about them" and "I'll stand up for them just as much as they stand up for me!" While surfing the internet, Luis found two sites where they talk about Mariah's ranges. "Pop-diva Mariah Carey hits during two different live renditions of the song "Emotions" a G7-note, the highest note in the history of recorded music. This happens at a concert of The MTV Video Music Awards 1991. You can hear a G7#-note in the third series of short 'hits', approximately around 13 seconds from the beginning. She jumps than from E7 to G7#." Click here "Octave Range: 5 (A2 - G7) Longest Note: 19 sec. Highest Note(s): G7, G7#, F7, E7 Lowest Note: A2 Type: coloratura soprano Mariah is famous for her 5 octave range. I am trying to put up all of Mariah's high notes. Right now I have most of them. Below you can hear her hit some of her high notes - including her famous G7." Click here Source for the infos and links: Luis by e-mail. Posted on January the 23rd. |

"It's Like That" première en Belgique Hier, Universal Belgique me disait que "It's Like That" serait officiellement envoyé aux radios belges dans environ 2 semaines, si tout se déroulait comme planifié, et bien aujourd'hui, Radio Contact a passé la chanson à exactement 22h20 et Daddy K. | New Mariah voice message
Hi (very high)! Hey lambs. Yeah, I had a whole big plan to leave a nice festive message, with Trey and every??? in the studio but, we got carried away doing the remix for "It’s Like That", but, the good news is I think you’re gonna like it. And, hum... the other news is that Trey ain’t here right now I’m by myself we all basically, had to take some time and get some sleep 'cause it was a long night in the studio... but, anyway I figured... a little message, by myself would be better than not calling at all so I’m just, calling you, to say... love you, appreciate you, and enjoy you, and can’t tell you, how grateful I am for... just everything that’s going on with the single right now and I know you guys are really, doing your thing out there and being extra extra supportive as always, and I can’t thank you enough and I’m so excited and so happy and just wanted to let you know, but anyway hopefully soon, hum... we will have a nice Big Nasty skit prepared for all of the Big Nasty fans (laughs). And hum... I will be calling in as soon as I can make that happen, alright? Or if I can’t make it happen quick enough I’ll just call you and... call you back and check in again, ok? Love you much and I will chat with you lata, ok. Bah-bye (very high). Source for the voice message: MariahCarey.com Transcript made by Gilles. Posted on January the 22nd. |

| Producers Randy Barbato and Fenton Baily wanted
Mariah in "Inside Deep Throat"
Randy Barbato and Fenton Baily, the men credited with directing the documentary Inside Deep Throat, www.xxxdeepthroat.com which premieres this week at Sundance did a recent Q & A on the World of Wonder website. How did you come to make this Inside Deep Throat? RANDY BARBATO: Fortunately we were chosen. By Brian Grazer. FENTON BAILEY: We had made a film called The Eyes Of Tammy Faye that did okay at Sundance, and there we met one of the nicest people in the business, Kim Roth. RANDY BARBATO: In fact, she's so nice you wonder what she's doing in the business. FENTON BAILEY: So we had heard that Brian Grazer was planning on making a biopic about Linda Lovelace. And Angelina Jolie, tearing a page out of Madonna's book, was campaigning to play the part. So we did our own Joliefication and suggested we should direct the film. RANDY BARBATO: Except that we thought Mariah Carey should play Linda Lovelace. FENTON BAILEY: And Kim was gracious enough to indulge us with a meet-and-greet. RANDY BARBATO: And then nothing happened. FENTON BAILEY: As you would expect it to. RANDY BARBATO: But then Linda Lovelace died. And I think Brian felt that when Linda died, doing a film about her life was problematic because there isn't a very satisfying cinematic arc to her story. | Mariah's interview on B96 Chicago this morning
She mentioned how she has taken pics for the album but has not decided which one will be the cover and that they were tastefully done. Eddie & JoBo asked her if she was in a relationship and in love...she said 'Yes! All I will say is that I'm in a happy place right now--surrounded by cool and awesome peeps'. (You can tell from her voice that she's happy and she sounded like she just woke up.) Also, how she has another song on the album with Jermaine Dupri called 'We Belong Together' and how Jermaine and her discussed that they had to work on some songs and stuff for the album but how they probably wouldn't be as good as their previous work. She discussed her insecurities back when she was in H.S. and how it's an endless process or something like that. Source: Jason Posted on January the 20th. |
| Mariah was on LA radio Kiss FM transcript
Ryan Seacrest: I want to ask you about this new record and about the new pressures on artists in terms of leaks on the internet. So let's run through the quick history of why you rushed to release this new music. Mariah: Well what happened was-- I've never experienced this whole leak situtation because that was always more with rap records or rock bands and stuff but this time around there were just a couple of leaks and then some of them would have talking through it and "for sample clearance only" type stuff going and I was like, "What is going on?" Then "It's Like That," the new single, which we kind of just decided it was the new single because it got leaked and people started really playing it and we were like "Okay" the response was really positive. I'm happy because it helped us come to a decision, like "this is definitely going to be the single" type thing. The fans really responded to it, so it's cool. But I guess it just forces your hand a little bit. RS: How much of a rush did it put on you then? Because here we are today on 20th of January, the big innauguration day, and people, including KIIS, we got that a little while ago and started playing it. So how much did it rush the official release? MC: I think it's still not officially out until Monday. RS: So have I illegally played it then? MC: The add date is the 24th so it's not that it's illegal, but they haven't technically gone for adds. Not to be too technical for the listeners out there. That just means when they ask radio if they can play it. RS: When you say the "add," that's when they say, "Radio, you can now go ahead and start spinning it on a regular basis." On this album The Emancipation Of Mimi, which is your nickname right? We're clearing up the rumor. You're not changing your name. It's just a nickname, just a title of an album. MC: Yeah, it's just a nickname. RS: There's no rebranding. MC: No. RS: There's no effort for the Mimi line of perfume or anything like that. MC: You never know what could happen. I mean it's funny. It's like I put out the album Butterfly and then everybody started sending me butterflies and I just ended up liking it, but it's not like I was like, "I am now called Mimi." It's so not that deep. It's like, "Okay, this is a nickname." The feeling of the album was so, "This is fun. This is light. This is personal," in a way that other records haven't been in terms of like, I've made a lot of really personal music but this is personal in a way, almost like a party record that also has depth to it. That's kind of who I am. Really, at the core of my being, I just want to have a good time and sometimes there's deep moments. LA Reid, who I've been so happy to be able to work with as an executive because he's such a great producer as well, loved the title because he realized there's so much spirit on this record that it would be cool to leave behind the misconceptions of Mariah Carey, the artist. The Emancipation Of Mimi was like the real personal side of me coming out. RS: How about Snoop? You've got Snoop that's on the album, Pharrell, Jermaine Dupri. MC: Nelly, Jermaine. RS: So when you have to work with all these various artists, does that make the process take longer because everybody's got to coordinate their schedules? MC: No, it was really cool. Everybody that I worked with on this record, it just organically happened. When I was working with Pharrell, he was working on Snoop's stuff. I had never worked with The Neptunes before and I was really excited to be doing it. He was working with Nelly in the next room and everything just came together really organically. Then I had gotten a track for Traxster who does a lot of work with Twista, who I'm a big fan of and we just saw eachother and it ended up that he was like, "Yeah, let's do the record." So it ended up happening. It was just like natural stuff and then just a lot of people I've always wanted to work with. We ended up working together. So I'm just really proud of the album and I'm really happy that the single is getting the response that it's getting. RS: I'm about to play that single in just a second, but I just wanted to ask you. When I hear about artists collaborating, working together, when I hear a song on the radio, I often wonder, do they just contribute their time and their talent for free? Is it a pro bono thing or do you have to split the returns of the record because with all these various artists, either you're very generous or they're very generous. MC: When I do stuff, I don't really charge people usually because that's just how I am. If you're a writer on a song, you obviously get your percentage of the song. It works out with publishing and stuff like that. Most people that are successful artists, they really don't need to charge other artists that much money. That's kind of like a tacky thing to do, I think. RS: So you could make more if you had fewer people involved, is that right? MC: If you wanted to write the rap and do it yourself, but I don't think that's in the card. It's not even about that. It's so not about the money. It's about the experience and the collaborative moment for me. RS: One of the guys that I work with on a regular basis is always bragging about your relationship and working with you and I don't know. Simon, Paula, and I don't know if it's really true but there's a guy by the name of Randy Jackson who probably atleast every other episode of American Idol says, "You know, I worked with Mariah Carey." MC: I love Randy. RS: Oh, so you do know him? MC: I've known Randy since I didn't even have a record deal, since I had just like my first demo. Well I guess I had a deal, but it was the very beginning before I had made a record and he was in the studio where I was working. It was incredible to meet him because he's been working with major artists forever. He played in my band. I'm just one of the few people he's worked with. Then he became my musical director. He's great. I really love Randy. I was just watching last night and it's so funny because he's just the same way he acts on the show. RS: Does he call you "man" and "dawg" and everything else? MC: Dawg! RS: Mariah! Mariah! Dawg, we've gotta... MC: No, we love Randy. Randy's honestly one of the best people I know. RS: He's probably one of the nicest guys in the entire business, one of the most trustworthy people. But there was part of me, and I have to be honest, that didn't really believe that he knew you because he talked about it so often on the series when we launched it. You know, comparing singers to Mariah or not to Mariah. MC: He's funny. I really appreciate that. That's a huge compliment because he's a very talented musician. RS: What do you think about these kids though when you watch the show. Look, the reality is you are the dream. Where you are is their destination. It's their dream destination. What do you think about some of these younger ones, and certainly the ones that come out and they're misdirected and misguided? MC: I'm just happy that I didn't have to be on a show because that wasn't me. I was always very much in the studio. I'm very much about my songwriting. Not everybody realizes that songwriting to me is like, 80% of what I do. It was hard to go the route I went in terms of the struggling artist type thing, but I give it up to them because it takes a lot of nerve to do that. RS: And life Mariah, for you, right now? MC: Very good! I'm really excited. I'm just in a really good place. I think that's part of the reason why people are responding to this single because it's one of those songs that's like, I equate it to if I were getting ready to go out with my friends for the night. It's very much about leaving your problems behind and just having a good time. That's the vibe that the song gives me and that's just where I'm at in my life. RS: Congratulations! Sorry you had to rush the release but people are excited about it. MC: I'm really excited about that so I just want to say thank you to everybody who's been supporting me and supporting the single and I love ya. RS: Mariah, you know, I think I love you. I love you. MC: Well I love you too. RS: Thanks sweety! MC: Thank you! Source: The Rebirth Experience Posted on January the 20th. |

| Mariah interview this morning
They played ILT and then said hello to Mariah. She starts talking about the process of recording it. She said that they were in the studio until 6 am. She said she doesn’t get any sleep when she’s in Atlanta and then laughs. She talked about another song that JD and her did together called "We Belong Together”. It is a mid-tempo ballad. Talks about JD knowing her as an artist and person (ABMB). Russ says he was critical of some of her music because some songs sounded alike. He said that this joint doesn’t sound like anything she’s done. She talked about the Neptunes tracks also being different for her. The girl asked what she thought about people with hit records that can’t sing cause Mariah can sing! She says that she has a lot of friends that are really talented and don’t have record deals. Russ says sounds happy. He liked Glitter - saw it 3-4 times. He talked about people being critical even before they saw it. They asked about her supposedly playing a boxer in a movie? She said that it's on and off the table but that she's definitely doing the broadway Christmas show. All the girls in the studio sang VOL. Mariah was laughing and said, "Do I get publishing from this???" The girl asked if there was love in her life? She says, “Love should be in everybody’s life”. The girl said, "Your gorgeous, talented, have a great body – you should have anybody you want." Mariah just says, “Thanks”. She says, “Your Mariah Carey. How do they ask you out?” Everybody approaches you differently. She was kind of vague on this answer. Talked of the passing of ODB. Said that it was really shocking and people come up to her and still sing “Me and Mariah”. She says she’s going to miss him. She said that ILT is her favorite record in years and that working with LA Reid is a blessing. Russ says he went to private premier of Charmbracelet and mentioned all of the fans there. He said she’s SOOoo sweet. She will come and sit beside you just to talk. He said there is another side of her that people don’t understand. EOM – March 22 but says single is out now. Russ said that people were calling in saying “I like that”! And she says, “Well, I like that!” Source: Jason Posted on January the 20th. |

Mariah Carey f/Fat Man Scoop & Jermaine Dupri "It’s Like That" (MonarC/IDJMG) Could it be that Mariah Carey has finally accomplished what many had thought couldn’t be done? If radio airplay and the programmers that I’ve spoken with are any indication, MC is well on her way back, and then some! We’ve been talking about MC’s return since late last year when we heard just a taste of what was to come. Now that those plans for one single have been, shall we say put on hold, it might just be a blessing, as the buzz on "It’s Like That" is so strong at Rhythm/Crossover, the record is now scheduled to impact Mainstream Top 40 simultaneously. From the minute this song was released it became a "Buzz Bin" pick. But you don’t need me to tell you why you should be playing this record. Ask your audience after playing it for them. It’s interesting to see what some time away from the spotlight can accomplish. And it sure seems like this time radio is more ready for Mariah Carey to return to the top of the charts. BET ON IT! Was pop movie director Brett Ratner stuck in control-freak mode during his party celebrating his guest-edited issue of V Life? Lowdown hears that the 35-year-old "After the Sunset" director insisted to party photographers at his house in Benedict Canyon that he have final approval over every picture, lest any spicy shots of him with beautiful women agitate his absent girlfriend, tennis star Serena Williams. Yesterday, Ratner's PR rep countered: "That's totally untrue. The only reason he'd ever have a picture killed is out of vanity, if he looked bad. By Jasmine Dotiwala
“On New Year’s Eve Caeser’s Palace sent a private jet to pick us up” The rest of our Xmas days in Aspen were spent having sleigh rides and being taught French aqua-aerobics by Mariah Carey in the pool in our living room. I also had to be saved by mountain rescue on the advanced slope while trying to keep up with the “Careys”. Oh, and while flipping out of the inflatable dinghy on the ice race I whacked my head on the ice. It was truly HOT TAMALE!! Then the day before New Year’s Eve we swung it on home when Caeser’s Palace (the infamous gambling Las Vegas hotel) sent their private jet to pick Mariah and her five guests (that included me) to fly us to Vegas for our New Year’s Eve party. On the Gulfstream we were kept entertained by a book made by Mariah fans Anuja and Lindsay from Toronto. The book made us all laugh like hyenas. (Girls you know we all DID IN FACT DRINK TOO MUCH!). En route I fulfiled another of my life ambitions – to fly over the Grand Canyon. It was just breathtaking. As I’ve never been to Vegas before I did the whole tourist thing, i.e. checking out the amazingly tacky yet opulent hotels that Vegas is famous for. We stayed at the Roman-themed Caeser’s Palace but I was also mesmerised by the Bellagio Hotel’s dancing fountains, the Egyptian-style Luxor Hotel, the Italianate Venetian, the Brooklyn-based New York New York, the gleaming Mandalay Hotel – which houses all the big boxing fights – and the Eiffel Tower. It was all crazy and life-like and made me realise why most Americans never leave the States: THEY CAN SEE THE WORLD IN VEGAS! Most high rollers fly their private jets into the city and get served free cocktails 24-7 in the casinos where the (starting) minimum gamble is $500! There are cheaper casinos though – so I was able to bet $20 and won $200 on my first bet. The yanks around me were disgusted when I didn’t put it all on again. I explained: “I’m a realist, not a fool.” Those places are scary – there are no clocks or windows anywhere so gamblers lose track of time as well as their mortgages! On New Year’s Eve I tried desperately to beg, borrow or steal a ticket for the hottest theatre show in town – THE “O” SHOW, which is the Cirque du Soleil's water-based show. I was unsuccessful. Then my Vegas room-mate and publicist-to-the-stars (like Denzel Washington) came to the rescue! Marvett Britto (the fabbest and fiercest person I’ve ever met) popped her hand on her hip, rolled her head and informed me: “Girl, I can hook up anything, I will hook you up tonight!” With a flash of her wand (or should that be kick of her Jimmy Choos?) she called up the hotel’s president and sorted it in a few minutes. So I went like Cinderella to the water ball which I watched with my jaw on the floor throughout. Thank you Marvett – I love you for that memorable experience. Then I ran back through the packed Vegas strip ’cos the cops had shut down the city to cars. We got glammed up to host our party at the “Pure” club. Up in the VIP suite we danced till 4am and had the time of our lives whilst the DJ – flown in from NYC – played the hottest upfront and old skool jams. Thank you Mariah for all my fabulous moments – you make me feel truly special. Finally: thanks to God. I am SO blessed! | R&B duo still enjoying chart bliss
CAREY ON Mariah Carey has her highest new entry on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks in more than five years, thanks to the No. 58 debut of "It's Like That" (MonarC/Island). The last time Carey had a higher opening number was in September 1999, when "Heartbreaker" bowed at No. 33. In its first week, "It's Like That" is already Carey's highest-charting song as a lead artist since October 2001, when "Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica)" went to No. 42. As a featured artist, Carey was in the R&B top 10 as recently as three weeks ago. "U Make Me Wanna" by Jadakiss featuring Carey peaked at No. 8. | "It's Like That" continues to hit the US
Step by step, the track is now hitting smaller radio stations on several areas across the US. Pitty, in some areas, DJs are rude toward the fans who request the song, maybe some fans request too much several times in a row. As the song is not officially released yet, it's a good idea to request it, but not to spam and harass the DJs Posted on January the 15th. |

"I wanted to be a recording artist before I ever wanted to be in theater. I think I really started the whole belt thing when Mariah Carey came out, because I never heard anyone as young as she was sing like her. I’d just try to emulate everything that she did in my room until I got it right, so she had a great influence on me too when I was young." | "It's Like That" first Belgian review
"When I first got the opportunity a few days ago, to hear the new Mariah Carey song through her Fan Club Honey B Fly, I was a lil worried as I read many critics about how even some fans disliked Mariah singing with rappers, her new style, her outfit (I don't see what the last has to do with music, but oh well), so like I said I was ready to hear something really weird. But my instinct said I could trust Mariah on this, she has always been a precursor in music. Even if critics, press, even when some of her own old fans were trying to bring her down, I was confident, 'cause like everyone in our family, I love the girl for herself as much as for her music. I'm of course from a generation where you tend to like the ballad style more, and Lord knows if Mariah is the best ballad girl I've ever heard. When I attended the Charmbracelet concert last year, I bursted in tears at several moments, but it brought me so much joy, even the "I Know What You Want" performance made me want to dance on my chair. But, back to "It's Like That", when the first beats from the song came up, I thought : "this reminds me pan pipes", then it went all so fast, the uptempo and Mariah's voice did the rest, the smooth beats and the lyrics bring you in a no-stress world and that's what we all need now. "It's Like That" is definitely a great song, and I personally don't care if it makes his way in the charts or not, if it doesn't make it, it's the radios which don't know what's good . To be honest, I need to admit the rapper at the end is a little to wild for my taste, but, hey, I'm 76 years old. Too bad I can't go to clubs anymore. It's the real Mariah, I'll take it. She's like that" Heroes comment: I found this note under my door this morning, I have a wonderful grandma Posted on January the 14th. |

WHEN ISLAND DEF JAM CHIEF L.A. Reid invited EW over to preview tracks from the new Mariah Carey album, The Emancipation of Mimi, he danced around his Manhattan corner office, fists raised in the air in celebration. "I don't know if you can tell," he grinned, mid- spin, "but I'm really happy with it." So is Carey, whose previous two discs suffered on the sales rack (her doomed Glitter soundtrack led to EMI buying her out of her contract for a reported $28 million in 2002). With her 10th studio CD, the five-octave singer is trying to refocus her vision of love with the help of superstar producers like the Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, and man of the moment Kanye West. Carey hopes the upbeat disc, which includes guest appearances by Snoop and Twista, among others, will have a broad appeal. "I know that my hardcore fans will have the ballads that they can cling to," she says, "but people who haven't been fans in the past will be able to pick out songs they like as well. It's not formulaic. I'm one of those people who likes to stay with what's familiar, but what was cool with this project was stretching." That newfound sense of liberation is reflected by Emancipation's title ("Mimi" has long been a nickname used by Carey's closest friends and family). When the name of the album leaked to the press late last year, tongues wagged that Carey was pulling a P. Diddy. "A lot of people were like, 'Uh-oh, is she changing her name!?'" she laughs. "There was this whole big drama. I'm like, It's really not that deep. It's what I felt like expressing at that moment." Source: Entertainment Weekly - EdWood Posted on January the 14th. |

| Did U know MC recorded with ODB again?
At the time of his death, ODB had been recording an album for premier hip hop stable Roc-a-Fella. Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, with whom Dirty had duetted a decade previously, and the Neptunes were involved, as were two of his former Wu cohorts, Method Man and Jones's cousin, the RZA. It could have spelled some sort of redemption for Dirty, had he lived. Label boss Damon Dash is too shrewd a businessman to keep ODB's final raps under wraps forever. Then there are vocals that the RZA, the Wu's linchpin producer, presumably has in his attic, slowly turning to gold. Source: The Guardian - Mariah Connection. Posted on January the 13th. |

| More news about "Ladies Night"
Ash gets new Hollywood offer If all goes well, Aishwarya Rai will get to work in producer-director Lee Daniels’ next film — Ladies Night. The film deals with a group of ladies who get together and go out for a night on the town and deal with everybody’s problems. Rai’s international agent, Simone Sheffield of Canyon Entertainment, affirms that Rai has been approached for the role. “Yes, we are very much looking forward to Ladies Night, as long as Aishwarya approves the final script and we can work-out the dates. Lee Daniels gave us the story line verbally. We are waiting to receive the script for Aishwarya’s final approval.” Along with Aishwarya, the cast will include Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Mo’Nique, Macy Gray, Patti LaBelle and currently negotiations are on with singer Beyonce. States Sheffield further, “Ladies Night will be shot in Philadelphia in late April / May 2005 and Lee Daniels will direct it. The film is an ensemble piece about six little girls that grow-up together and learn about friendship and life. It is a musical!” But how much will Rai find a place amongst so many stars? “Each actress will bring her own special and unique quality to their character making each personality an important element in the story. The concept, character, story-line and wonderful cast of Ladies Night is what’s so much fun about the project.” “The hat trick here will be getting everyone’s schedule to fall into place” says Daniels. Daniels also led Halle Berry to an Oscar in his film Monster’s Ball. Simone Sheffield is Associate Producer of the recently completed film, Shadow Boxer starring two-time Academy Award nominee Dame Helen Mirren and Academy Award winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. The film is set for release late 2005. Daniels’ next release is The Woodsman. Directed by Nicole Kassell, it stars Kevin Bacon and deals with life after prison. His last release was Monster’s Ball. Ladies Night will start filming in May. | "It's Like That" airplay
After a few days of good airplay on major radio stations in the US, it seems it felt a little today, and it's not due to the lack of motivation to vote, a real organized army of fans do their thing in a real smart way. But please, if you're an US citizen, vote only in your area. The airplay stats are still good as now, the track hits more radios across the country. Also, it was played on a UK radio and since this week-end on a French radio (Paris area only). Dave sent me an e-mail telling the song was played today on the digital radio station BBC during Ronnie Herel's show and received a good feedback from the DJ. Belgium is still waiting for the official ok to play the song. Posted on January the 12th. |
| Jay-Z Brings Pal Foxy Brown Back To Def Jam
Jay-Z's barely had time to print up new business cards, but already Def Jam's new president and CEO has signed an artist to the label: Foxy Brown. Foxy's reps aren't giving away too many details right now, but they said she's been in the studio working on her next album and that she spent part of Tuesday in the Def Jam offices. Foxy and Jay's official reunion certainly comes as no surprise. She performed several dates with him during both the Best of Both Worlds and "Jay-Z and Friends" tours last fall, and even before that, Fox was telling everyone that she was going to be a part of Jay's S. Carter imprint — an imprint that has yet to come into existence in light of the rap mogul's new Def Jam job. Jay-Z was appointed the head of Def Jam in early December, and his first official day on the job was January 3. After her last LP, Broken Silence, dropped on Def Jam four years ago, Foxy recorded an LP called Ill Nana 2: The Fever, which was never released . She then left her only recording home and has been in the lab recording material for an album tentatively titled Black Roses. Barrington Levy, Dido and Luther Vandross are among her collaborators on that material. Besides Foxy's new LP, projects on the horizon under the Def Jam umbrella include records from 112, Mariah Carey and Memphis Bleek. Source: MTV (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 12th. |

The Ghettopoly game
We read in Jasmine's article, Mariah and her friends played "Ghettoply". For us Belgians and I thing most of Europeans, it's difficult to find this game here at an affordable price and only in some specialized stores, so I thought it was a good idea to show you what it was. " Ghettopoly™ Board Game Ages: 13 to Adult. 2 to 7 Playas. . Buying stolen properties, pimpin hoes, building crack houses and projects, paying protection fees and getting car jacked are some of the elements of the game. Not dope enough?...If you don't have the money that you owe to the loan shark you might just land yourself in da Emergency Room." By Jasmine Dotiwala Jasmine: " Check out the snowman me ’n’ Mariah made "
God bless and keep strong to those affected by the Asian tidal wave over Christmas. It was a bittersweet Christmas for me knowing that thousands had perished due to Mother Earth’s wrath. On a more joyous note, my Christmas was unforgettable for many more reasons than the tragedy in Asia. "It was once again glamorous, rural, festive and it made me acknowledge how blessed we are. I spent the holidays with my Christmas cousin, Mariah, who (as only she can) does-it in style. On Christmas Eve I did a triple trudge across the Atlantic from London to Chicago to Denver to snow-covered, bourgeois Aspen where MC’s driver scooped me straight up and off to meet the fam’ who were all waiting for me at our table at Nobu. (Yep – there’s a Nobu in every stoosh location in the world!) After dinner we explored our house on our private mountain. Yes, we even had a mountain to ourselves (how bling-blow is dat?) which was on top of the highest peak and surrounded by snowy, majestic mountains. I gasped for breath every morning as I sat up in my bed, mesmerised by the panoramic, 360-degree postcard-view! Check out the snowman me ’n’ Mariah made.- Christmas Day was like something out of a storybook. We all had pancakes and waffles with fresh fruit and hot scotch toddies before settling in front of the biggest tree in the house (there were five) to open our pressies. Mine included a jasmine-scented candle; brown suede, Gucci, knee-high boots; a Manolo Blahnik shoe horn; a fluffy bathrobe; the usual awful tacky Christmas knickers (why?); nice-naughty underwear; Ugg slippers; a Gucci purse; white, cashmere mittens and loads of naughty hip-hop board games which I can’t imagine why I got. Everyone insisted it was ’cos of my crazy hysterical obsession last year with Ghettopoly. The rest of the afternoon was spent playing hip-hop knowledge games accompanied by lots of screaming and joy. I then took MC’s 12-year-old-Jack Russell terrier, Jackson P Mutley, for his daily sprint up the mountain where we watched little rich kids sledging in the ice and tried to stop Jack from fighting the reindeer which are a million times bigger and more dangerous than him. (I guess it’s true what they say about pets being like their owners – Jack’s sure got gallons of attitude and won’t be put down!) We had ’nuff fun getting dressed in our various ensembles for the traditional American Christmas dinner where we wore long, glamorous gowns and had two turkeys, sweet potato, mash, ham, stuffing, rice, black beans and my favourite… butternut squash soup. After sneaking in the obligatory lil’ nap to recuperate, we got dressed for our Christmas party in town, showing up in a horse-drawn carriage no less – as you do. In the house were hip-hop mogul Steve Stoute; Eminem’s boss and Interscope head Jimmy Lovine; Denise Rich; Diandra Douglas (Michael Douglas’s ex);-and a hot African American actor who was very attentive to me but un-namable in case I bump into him again. Also in town for Xmas were Will Smith and his family; former US tennis star Chris Evert; Martina Navratilova; actor Kevin Costner and the old playboy actor and legend Jack Nicholson. For more on our NYE party watch this space." Pic: Peak performance: Jas, Mariah, Mutley and pal. Source: The Voice (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 11th. |

| "Ladies Night" with Mariah, to start filming
in May
Lee Daniels says he's "relieved and really happy that we've finally given birth again." "I have the stretch marks to prove it," says the Wynnefield native, producer, of "The Woodsman," which premieres Wednesday at the Annenberg Center. Daniels says the film, directed by fellow homegirl Nicole Kassell, was "a test of wills to prove the Hollywood system wrong." It's about a sex offender (Center City's Kevin Bacon) dealing with life after prison. It doesn't humanize pedophiles, says Daniels, but instead tells a story of abuse that affects many Americans. Daniels is still editing "Shadowboxer," which filmed here over the summer. Next up, he says, is a musical called "Ladies Night," to start filming here in May. "It's like 'Waiting to Exhale' meets 'Chicago' meets animation," says Daniels. He says he's cast Indian actress Aishwarya Rai, Mo'Nique, Macy Gray, Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys,Mariah Carey, and Patti LaBelle and hopes to cast Beyonce. | Lack of research from Denver Post columnist
Bill Husted, Denver Post columnist, critics artists for spending money while people are suffering from the tsunami disaster. Among the criticized people, Mariah's name comes up 'cause she bought "Dior" outfits in Aspen. What he "forgot" to tell or maybe he didn't make correctly his research, is at the moment Mariah did her shopping, no human knew there was or would be a disaster in Asia. Next time Bill, make a few researches, and maybe mention all Mariah already did for charities. By the way, dear Bill, how did you spent your money for Christmas? Posted on January the 9th. |
