Yesterday American Idol ratings

Three weeks into its 12th season, last night’s two-hour American Idol (5.4/14) headed to San Antonio for more auditions. The second-to-last audition show of the season was by far the night’s most-watched show, pulling in 15.59 million viewers. Steady with last week’s fast nationals, last night’s Idol did slip 8% from the comparable Season 11 show. That could change, however; last Wednesday Idol actually went up a tenth when the finals came in. Still, Fox won the night in viewership and the adults 18-49 demo.

Whatever he tells, she's still dealing with the Side Effects.....

We all know Tommy Mottola released a book where Mariah is mentioned a lot.
I'll not spend my money to buy it, Alan who bought it, sent me some "interesting" tidbits.  I'll not post them all...............

- When Brenda K. Starr gave him Mariah's demo tape at a party: “What is it?, I found myself staring into brown eyes that were staring back at me in a way that demanded attention" "That’s my friend, her name is Mariah.”

- On his way home, he listened to the tape in his car: "An unbelievable energy was running through me, screaming, Turn the car around! That may be the best voice you’ve heard in your entire life!"

- On his relationship with Mariah: "I thought: life is short. Fuck it. This is what I feel. This is what I’m going to do? I went off with Mariah without thinking about the possible consequences and repercussions, or the effect that both might have on my children.  It was absolutely wrong and inappropriate for me to become involved with Mariah, I should have listened to the piercing voice of my shrink and maintained my distance. By the way, it was Mariah who asked me to marry her."

- On their wedding: "When I think back to the wedding to Mariah, all that’s left in my mind is a stop-action still frame—the kind of publicity shot that might be in the newspaper the next day or that I see still floating around the internet and I suddenly realized I was making a major mistake when I looked at my 12-year-old daughter weeping during the ceremony while my 13-year-old son held her. They felt terribly out of place and uncomfortable, and they knew in their bones what I simply couldn’t feel"

- The broke up: We broke up soon after the 1996 Grammy party, you could hear the crack between us cracking open a little wider on a night that I was hoping would allow to look back on all the good times that had brought us this far.  I went to work and left a note with lyrics to an Elton John song on the nightstand: “Butterflies are free to fly/Fly away…” (Heroes note: new fans may not know this inspired Mariah to write Butterfly)

Tommy Mottola apologizes ...... yes and no

Mariah Carey's ex husband Tommy Mottola is opening up about mentoring his ex-wife while he was a music executive and reveals that "obsessive" behavior was necessary to make her the star that she is today.
In an interview Tuesday with the Today show's Matt Lauer, Mottola responded to a passage from his new book Hitmaker: The Man and His Music, where -- among many other topics -- he addresses his "controlling" nature while nurturing Carey's musical talent.

"Well I think that anyone that is successful becomes obsessive with what they are trying to succeed at," he tells Lauer. In the book, the former Sony Music Entertainment executive writes, "If it seemed like I was controlling let me apologize..." He then tells Lauer he thinks it "will be the first time" that his wife of five years will get such an apology for his past actions.

Concerning his relationship with the singer -- who is 21 years his junior -- Mottola said he recognized now that it was a mistake at the time. "It was absolutely wrong and inappropriate for me to become involved with Mariah, and I'm not saying this because there was a generation gap, I should [have] listened to the piercing voice of my shrink and maintained my distance."

Mottola was also asked how he thinks Carey will react to the revelations in his book. "I have nothing but the greatest respect for her in the world, she is one of the greatest singers and songwriters that has ever come along. So I feel great about all of the things that she has achieved as a result of all of the work that we did."

Random: Tina Fey Talks Mean Girls Musical: Mariah Carey Should Play the Cool Mom!

On the red carpet at the SAG Awards, Tina Fey talked about a possible musical of Mean Girls:
"Maybe! We want to. I would love to. I'm trying to develop it with my husband, who does all the music for 30 Rock and I think Paramount's onboard."

And Tina already has one musician in mind to take on one of the now-iconic parts: Mariah Carey.

"I loved it!" Tina gushed when asked about the recent American Idol fight between Mariah and fellow judge Nicki Minaj over Mean Girls. "And I think Mariah won. Like, Mariah seemed to really know all the characters."

During the spat, Ms. Carey was adamant that she was no Regina George and Tina agrees: "Maybe she can play Amy Poehler's part in the musical."

American Idol, the backlash!  The producers wanted Nicki and her dramas, now they need to deal with it!!!

When you hire a person who spend more time to rate the contestants' outfits than their ability to sing, expect low audience ratings.  Nicki wants that show to be about her and the producers seem to do all they can to do so.  Like a spoiled baby, Nicki went off not only at Mariah but at Randy too.

We expected better audience ratings than last week, but it isn't so.  According to Deadline, ratings went down 10% from last week’s premiere. It also was down 16% from Season 11’s second-week

I have no idea how it goes with those kind of shows, but I guess (I hope) the ratings will pick up again when it will be live in March.

American Idol' Shows 'Another Side' Of Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon Says

After one week of "American Idol" — and litany of passive-aggressive banter between judges/sworn blood enemies Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj — it's apparent that this season is going to be one for the ages (just ask fellow judge Keith Urban ... we're sure each taping feels like an eternity to him).

And yet, despite all that back-and-forth, most "Idol" aficionados seem to have already taken a shine to Carey, as she's earned high marks for her judging abilities (most seem to agree that Minaj is an acquired taste). Not surprisingly, that also includes her husband Nick Cannon, who told MTV News that he thinks Carey came off great in her first week on the job.

"I think the world gets a chance to see another side of Mariah, and everyone's falling in love with her; I looked at Twitter, Facebook, when I see all the write ups — because now they're judging the judges — they gave her an A all across the board," he said. "People got to see how knowledgeable she is as a musician and a singer, and she's so charismatic and the most nurturing person I know, so it's cool."

The couple didn't get to watch Carey's "Idol" debut together ("We were on the phone watching it," Cannon laughed. "I was in LA and she was in New York.") But, after months of speculation about Carey's rivalry with Minaj, Cannon said he's just glad fans have finally gotten to see the two in action ... and, more importantly, witness his wife shine.

"Obviously they play up the drama," he said, "but then to see [that] everybody is really sincere — especially Mariah, she comes off so likeable — it's awesome."

And, as Cannon was quick to point out, there's another reason Carey excels at being an "American Idol" judge: if folks are going to get critiques from anyone on their singing abilities, well ...

"It might as well be from Mariah Carey," he laughed.

I met him through her at our video for the song we did together, “Obsessed.” Later she put me in touch with Brett Ratner and Harmony Korine, who’s the director. American Idol rates better on the second day

So, is the Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj feud actually good for American Idol's business?!

Thursday night's two-hour outing of the Fox reality phenomenon attracted 16.2 million viewers and 5.6 ratings in the adults 18-49 demo; that's only slightly down from Wednesday's premiere, which delivered 17.8 million viewers and a 5.9 in the demo.

While Wednesday night's premiere saw a 19 percent drop from season 11's premiere in 2012, season 12's second outing was only down two percent from last year's (18 million viewers), which could mean that viewers are liking what they are seeing.

In past seasons, ratings have dropped at least 20 percent between the first two nights; this season, Idol only saw a seven percent drop. Even more impressive: this is Idol's strongest retention in its second episode since 2009. Score one for the new judging panel!

But do we need to add an asterisk next to these numbers? Possibly, seeing as Idol's biggest competition The Big Bang Theory, which hit 20 million viewers last week, aired a rerun last night that brought in 12 million viewers at 8 p.m. Will the divas be able to hold off the geeks next week? Stay tuned!

After the premiere's somewhat disappointing numbers, a Fox source told E! News that executives were worried that Nicki and Mariah's feud could possibly be turning viewers off to the revamped show.

"People wonder if the fight was faked to get people talking about the new season," the insider said. "It was not fake. And when the video came out, there was a lot of concern among Fox execs that there could be impact on the ratings. The judges need to be likable."

Bad move AI, bad move !!!!!  They hired Mariah to save a sinking ship but by adding Nicki they lost the family audience......

Ratings: 'American Idol' Down 19% in Season Premiere

Wednesday night's premiere of "Idol" dropped 19 percent from last year's premiere, posting a 6.0 rating/16 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic. The premiere also shed 4 million total viewers compared to last season's opener, drawing 17.9 million.

Those numbers represent a pattern of decline for the singing competition. Last year's season premiere was down 24 percent in the demo from the previous season's premiere, and down 21 percent in total viewers.

Grade A for Mariah!!!!!

American Idol: Judging the New Judges

Mariah Carey: "The definition of diva," as the show's intro described Carey, skillfully treads the line between being friendly and respectful to the contestants, while at the same time offering them constructive feedback about their talents or lack thereof. And the best part? She seems to not only be taking the role seriously, but also shows genuine interest — or does a great job of faking it — when indulging hopefuls that are also die-hard fans, like Tina Torres, the sweet alumni of Camp Mariah who showed the singer a picture of herself when she first sang for Carey at age 13. (Cue the first Minaj eyeroll.) Grade: A-

Nicki Minaj: If the season premiere is any indication, Minaj will spend most of her critiquing time, if not taking digs at Carey, either flirting with the contestants (enough to warrant a montage) or judging them on their entire stage presence, rather than just their singing. Hey, Nicki — this isn't The X Factor. Minaj also has an uncanny knack for making several of the auditions about her. Remember the girl the pop star accused of starting a "rivalry" with her because they were wearing the same color eyeshadow? And what's with the fake British accent? She's not Madonna! As for her feedback, the only hopeful a perked-up Minaj truly fought for to send to Hollywood performed "Super Bass" as one of her songs. Grade: C

Keith Urban: Poor Keith. When Urban offers feedback, it's thoughtful, well-considered, and effective. But Mr. Nicole Kidman's primary role, it would seem, is to be the voice of reason in this circus, to act as a buffer between Carey and Minaj, whose outsize personalities and attempts to one-up each other overshadow the soft-spoken country singer. Still, Urban's the only judge who meshes with the "white boy with guitar" aesthetic the show has exhibited in recent years, so maybe he'll step up his game once the live shows begin. And we think we heard him crack a few choice jokes in there. Grade: B-

Mariah Carey to "Idol" Hopefuls: "I Want to See You Rise"

What do you want to get out of 'Idol,’ personally?
I think mainly it's working with up-and-comers, when I know how I started as an up-and-comer, and I know how hard it was for me. I like being able to be in here with them and see them rise. To me that's the ultimate in giving back.

What's the thing you wished you would've known when you started out?
Not to sign a bunch of stupid contracts. I gave away a lot of stuff!

When one of the contestants sings one of your songs, do you tend to judge them more harshly?
No. Honestly, I can't say it's all the same, but if someone comes and does a really nice rendition of one of my songs, I love it. A couple of years back, David Cook sang my song. He sang 'Always Be My Baby,' and I was mentoring. He was great. It was a day that…it was just like, 'Wow.' He took 'Always Be My Baby,' which was a number one song for me years ago and he did a great acoustic twist on it. And that's what I love to see, when people get creative, because you see the artist within them. It's not just a sound alike or a this or a that.

Have any other aspiring ‘Idols’ sung your songs this season and what songs have they been?
Right now I'm blanking. Did someone sing 'My All'? Somebody sang 'Hero’ – shocking! I'm trying to think if they sang 'We Belong Together.' It's like there are so many different moments that have happened out of it. We did this thing: I brought Santa Claus out for everybody and we all did 'All I Want For Christmas This Year.' That's probably not going be seen by anybody, but it was seen by us, because I'm festive and we were going to Aspen and I was like, 'Let's bring Santa.' He was my security guard, but the real Santa was in Aspen, waiting. They know that I know the real Santa.

What are the things that the contestants are doing that makes you want to invest even more in them?
Just the humanity. Like, when you see the families at the end and how supportive some of the people's families can be when they've been watching them and they come out at the end and they're hugging them and they're crying, it's uplifting. It's not fake. It's just real and you realize, 'Wow, this could be a total scam,' but it's not.

When you give someone a real honest opinion and you can see that they're devastated, does that stick with you?
It's tough, but I think it's about the way that you say it. But if you're like, 'You know what, Mariah? Your dress is nice and I'm sure it's a good designer, but maybe you should pull it down a little bit more while you sit here and talk to us, in terms of why it's sticking up over here,' I'd be a little bit like, 'Okay, thanks...' But I'd take it in and I'd remember.

Do you want to encourage a lot of songwriting and producing aspirations?
Absolutely. I think that's one thing that's been a big deal for me from day one. I would ask a lot of the people who seemed more bluesy or guitar playing, I would say, 'Do you write songs? Do you write your own songs?' Because for me that's such a huge part of legendary artistry. A lot of people, they tend to not think about that when watching a TV show, and for me, songwriting is above singing, for me as a singer, which sounds weird to most people. But I love writing.

What are the moments that you really want to make sure that you have, nannies aside, with your kids?
Well, every moment is incredible and a blessing, and I was just performing in Sydney, at an arena, and I brought them out on stage because I want them to have these little experiences when possible. Some people might disagree with that, but for me, I was like, 'I know,' especially Monroe, that's my daughter, 'was going to love this.' She did not want to get off the stage, and it's on YouTube.

How are their personalities as twins?
Actually he can be a little bit more aggressive, but not in a bad way. It's just that he'll give her a little tap and she's trying to  hug him. She's like a real sweetie, and he's great. He's my buddy. We watch movies together. We watch 'Baby Can Read,' and they're only a year and a half. So it's like, 'Wow, how are they doing this?' It's just such an amazing thing that I never thought I would experience because I always said I don't think I would do it because my career was always my life, but when you find the right person and you go through with it…I had a very tough pregnancy, really tough, physically, gestational diabetes and stuff, but we got through it and here we are.

How is your next album shaping up?
Great. I'm super excited. I cannot wait. I have a lot of ideas!

Is there a flavor that you're starting to see emerge at this point?
Oh, yeah. A little too many ballads, but no one ever gets mad at me for that.

Mariah Carey says Motherhood is a "Blessing"

Mariah Carey thinks being a mother to her 20-month-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, is a "blessing" as she didn't think she'd ever have children.

The 'Hero' singer - who has 20-month-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with her husband Nick Cannon - never expected she would have kids, so loves spoiling them rotten and exposing them to the benefits of her showbiz lifestyle.

She gushed: "Every moment is incredible and a blessing. I was performing in Sydney and I brought them out on stage because I want them to have these experiences. Some might disagree with that, but I know Monroe especially was going to love it. She didn't want to get off the stage.

"Motherhood's an amazing thing I never thought I'd experience because I always said I don't think I'd do it because my career was always my life, but when you find the right person."

The 42-year-old star finds juggling her parenting duties with her 'American Idol' judging role a challenge, but admits it's far easier than the hectic months when she's in the studio working on new music.

She told Britain's OK! magazine: "It's super difficult. It's really exhausting, but this isn't the most exhausting part. The best part is when everything runs smoothly and you come to work, do your job and go home like more of a normal person than someone who's in a studio for 18 hours, which would be me."

So many drama queens....

As it seems I need to explain myself, here it is:

- No, I don't hate or diss Nicki Minaj, I simply ignore a girl who was real back in 2006 when she did underground mixtapes (yes I even liked some of her songs back then) and respected people.  So don't even try.....

- For the Keith Urban stuff,  I didn't see any footage myself but some did before the judges where on stage at the Q&A
" Next, it’s a montage of Nicki and Mariah cat fights, with Keith in the middle.
“I wasn’t talking to you,” Nicki says at one point. “It was the way that you said it!” Mariah shoots back.
“I have a thought, Nicki excuse me!” says Mariah.
“I don’t want to make anyone upset here,” says Mariah. “SURE YOU DO,” says Keith.

She finally said it!!!!  ""I don't want to look like a crazy psycho again"

Nicki Minaj Talks Mariah Carey Feud, Afraid of Looking Like "Crazy Psycho Again" on American Idol
It's a topic that seems to never die down: the battle between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.

Once word of a feud between the two American Idol judges hit the streets, it was all anyone could talk about, so when Ellen DeGeneres had the Barbz singer on her show as a guest (airing tomorrow), she had to get the deets on that whole situation. Yeah, Nicki, what happened?!

"I don't know. It was just two big old divas, I guess," Minaj said. "I was just like sitting there, and I guess before I went in there I heard all the stuff that was being said, but I didn't believe it. I heard them saying 'Mariah doesn't want you on the panel' but I was like, 'No. I am friends with Mariah.' I was like arguing people down. Like, 'Don't believe everything you read, you're crazy.' And so I went there and I started to feel a bit of the shade. And I just kind of overcompensated by being crazier."

Clearly, Minaj realized that wasn't the best way to go about things.

"If you know someone maybe doesn't like you, it's kind of like, now you're gonna really go in...because it's like a defense mechanism. You know what I mean? It's really that. Your feelings are hurt and you can't believe it, so you kind of just compensate with being crazy."

As far as Nicki and Mariah's relationship now, the Pink Friday singer said, "We're fine. I cannot hold a grudge against Mariah Carey. What people don't understand is that I've looked up to her for so many years. Since she came out, 'Vision of Love' all that. Me and my mother would sing her songs like all day and all night. So I don't know if she's gotten over it but I have. I mean, I'm over there cracking up laughing, having fun and if she's still holding a grudge. I don't know. Like I don't care."

But Minaj had to admit one thing—she's not looking forward to live shows only because she can't trust herself.

"Just like if there's a slick comment being made, I just want it to go well. It's about the contestants. We have a lot of great talent, and I don't want anyone on the panel to say something too crazy because then I don't want to look like a crazy psycho again. I am not really a crazy psycho, you guys."

In Pasadena today: Winter Television Critics

American Idol officially kicked off on Tuesday morning at the 2013 TCA in Pasadena. That's where new judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban took the stage to face the critics -- and there were plenty of them: those who had stuck by the show for more than a decade, hoping to find the next superstar, as its tagline boldly stated.

This year, the slogan has changed to "Everyone Dreams, Idol Delivers," but where the press was concerned: the new batch of contestants take a backseat to the drama of the judges' panel.

Indeed, it took about three questions before the much-blogged about "feud" was mentioned. The two who clashed --  Carey and Minaj -- smiled some, deflected a lot, but in the end, had a couple of nice things to say about each other.

"This is a very passionate panel, there are a lot of strong personalities," said Carey who noted that at the start of the process it became clear that there could be "differences of opinion." As for the North Carolina rumble, which leaked out via cell phone video, "The fighting is what it is," Carey continued. "This is American Idol -- it's bigger than all that. It's bigger than some stupid trumped-up thing."

That's not to say that anything about the clash was staged. In fact, Fox president of alternative programming Mike Darnell went out of his way to emphasize, "It's authentic." Added executive producer Nigel Lythgoe: "Two of them were always angry." And FremantleMedia's Trish Kinane pointed out that the Idol audience was asking -- even begging -- the producers for one thing above all else: "They told us they wanted honesty," she said.

With that in mind, Minaj and Carey were both asked to say something nice about each other. Minaj went first: "I say nice things about Mariah all the time, she's one of my favorite artists of all-time she's really shaped a generation of singers. To be on a panel with her, it's kind of crazy because these singers aspire to be a Mariah Carey. So I feel excited to see them so excited."

Replied Carey, pointing out that the two of them worked together early in Minaj's career: "That was obviously a sweet thing to say. .. I know and feel that she's going to go very far and am grateful for anything nice that she or anyone says about me."

But when it comes to their jobs: finding promising talent and launching a music career, they take that responsibility very seriously and it shows. Perhaps no better example was offered than when Minaj recounted her own experiences watching the show at home. "I didn't like when people would be overtly passive," she said. "We're here to do a job. I don't put someone through because of a great story or because there's something going on that may make people cry. ... I didn't really have a problem saying no because we're looking for the best of the best. It brothers me when someone says yes and don't deserve it."

Hallelujah to that! But in the end, it was Mariah Carey who nailed the Idol dynamic in one punchline: "We're putting the 'fun' back in dysfunction."

Mariah Carey Talks Music, Motherhood and Her Relationship with Nicki Minaj

In the two decades since she burst onto the scene, Mariah Carey has produced more chart-topping singles than Elvis.

With more than 200 million albums sold, she is now the best selling female artist of all time. In a tucked away corner of her palatial New York City penthouse are Grammys, Vibe awards, World Music awards -- accolades from an unparalleled career.

The singer, who is expected to release a new album in the coming months, sat down for an exclusive interview with ABC's Barbara Walters to talk about her music, being a mother to twins and what's in store for her future.

We're used to seeing Carey on stage, belting out her music with a voice of staggering power and range. But starting next week, she will be judging the singers, instead of being the singer, as a new judge of "American Idol."

And her star power doesn't come cheap. Although she wouldn't confirm it, Carey is reportedly being paid $18 million a season.

"I think we're in the ballpark, [but] I can't even talk about those things," she told Walters.

But it's not only Carey's salary that is drawing attention these days. It's her relationship with fellow "Idol" judge, Nicki Minaj.

In October, TMZ released a video of a heated argument between the two divas during an audition in North Carolina. After the cameras were off, Carey claims others heard Minaj take it even further and say, "If I had a gun, I would shoot that bitch," as Walters reported on her daytime talk show, "The View."

"It felt like an unsafe work environment," Carey said. "Anytime anybody's reeling threats at somebody, you know, it's not appropriate. I'm a professional. I'm not used to that type of environment."

As a result, Carey said she hired more security.

"I just felt it was the appropriate thing to do," she said. "Sitting there on the road with two babies, I'm not going to take any chances."

Minaj has denied saying anything about a gun, calling the statement a "fabrication." When ABC News asked her for comment for this story, her representative said "she's said what she's saying on this topic."

"For all the drama, I hope it helps the show," Carey said. "I think it's a classic, classy show and it didn't need this."

The public battle with Minaj is not the only challenge Carey faced recently. Nick Cannon, her husband of five years and the host of the rival competitive singing show, "America's Got Talent," suddenly fell ill and was hospitalized for kidney failure last year.

"It was very serious, but he's got some great doctors who really got in there and helped him out and at this point he is doing great," she said. "He's better than ever."

His struggle with that life-threatening illness inspired her recently released song, "Triumphant."

"I was just trying to encourage people to never give up and to get through and to persevere," Carey said. "And that's what the meaning of 'Triumphant' was to me."

The couple have something else to rejoice over: Their 20-month-old twins, a girl named Monroe and a little boy named Morrocan.

"I call her Miss Monroe, and that kind of dictated her personality," Carey said of her daughter. "She's a total diva. She's into jewelry. She's fascinated by jewelry."

Her son's nickname, she said, is "Rock."

"He's my pal," Carey said. "He'll just watch movies with me. We've watched 'Shrek' I don't know how many times. We watch movies all the time together, relax. He's more chill."

The power couple recently celebrated the twins' first birthday in true diva style with a family trip to Paris, where they renewed their vows on the Eiffel Tower. In fact, they renew their vows every year.

"[Nick] is just as festive as I am," Carey said. "I'm very, very festive, and he kind of almost trumps me there."

Despite the glamorous trips, Carey is trying to stay close to home, for now, to spend quality time with the kids. She said she and Minaj have made up, and she is looking forward to the return of "American Idol" for its 12th season next week.

"For me, ultimately, this is about the kids, the contestants," Carey said. "I've been blessed to live my dream more than half my life, so I want help give that back to someone else."

Finally a review not full of mistakes and rumors!

Songbird supreme Mariah Carey sparkles in Sydney
THE diva delivered.
Mariah Carey Sydney Allphones Arena

Acting ever-the-prima-donna, the 42-year-old was over half-an-hour late to the stage, leaving hubby Nick Cannon to keep the jam-packed 40,000-strong Allphones Arena audience at bay before turning up at approximately 9.30pm for a 2-and-a-half hour set.

But all was forgiven as the opening beats to a remix of Can't Take That Way boomed through the sound system; Carey appearing in all her blinged-up glory in a short, figure-hugging mini-dress, typical of the Carey couture we have come to know.

The songbird supreme did not disappoint, her voice is as powerful as it was twenty years ago, hitting that signature squeak (G#7, think just a few keys from the top of a piano) for her 1991 hit, Emotions.

The playlist was a mixed bag of hits spanning her twenty year career and mixed vocal range, from the oldies (My All, Always Be My Baby) to the newbies (It's Like That, Obsessed, Shake It Off, Touch My Body).

There were a few random tracks, including what Carey described as one of her all-time favourites, 1997's Close My Eyes, along with an off-the-cuff acapella of Can't Let Go/Love Takes Time.

Like an old-pro, Carey casually chatted to her "Lambs" between breaks, sharing personal memories and moments and joining in the Australian experience by eating a spoonful of Vegemite, only to demand a glass of bubbles to wash it down.

"It’s not that bad," she said between pursed lips.

She announced her children's new love affair with the country, where her daughter Monroe spoke her first words – "I’m good girl" - on stage during her New Year’s show at the The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

"So Australia, my children love you!"

But it was the penultimate show-stopper – Hero - that made the crowd melt, before a soaring finale of We Belong Together. Not a note was missed.

She might be a diva, she might be demanding and she might be a little late, but damn, that woman can sing.

Mariah and other American Idol judges on the cover of Hollywood Reporter

"There's something a little more romantic about Mariah Carey shouting, 'You're going to Hollywood!,' than Nicki Minaj going, 'You made it to Northridge!' "

This year's slogan: "Others dream, Idol delivers."

"It's the biggest and certainly the most meaningful of the shows," defends Mike Darnell, Fox's president of alternative programming and the executive who gave the first greenlight to American Idol, then an offshoot of the Fuller-created British Pop Idol, in 2002. "It's the one that started it all. It has an elegance and simplicity to it. But ultimately, the fact that people can still become stars proves that Idol is head and shoulders above the others. This show has engagement, and it's engagement that creates stars.

The panel is being paid handsomely for it, with Carey, 43, earning a salary of $18 million, according to sources, Minaj pocketing $12 million, and less for Urban and Jackson. Somewhat shockingly, Darnell insists that despite the divas' extra handlers, glam-squad members and security detail, the show's production costs, which THR has estimated run in the vicinity of $2 million an episode, have not increased. Still, the hefty sums (which include host Ryan Seacrest's $15 million-a-year deal) don't always pay off.

On the other hand, the exposure can do wonders for a career that's waning or an artist coming off of a long leave. Says Carey, who's finishing her 11th album with plans to launch it during Idol: "This show is such a massive, popular entity, it does help people promote their music, and at the end of the day, that's the most important thing. … But this is a big departure for me because, for the most part, either I had nothing or I was my own boss. I was on the fence about the whole thing, I got approached by all the shows." Ultimately, she said yes to Idol with the urging of her husband, America's Got Talent host Nick Cannon on rival network NBC. "He said I should do it because it's the top, it's the cream of the crop. And I felt like, 'Do the show that's produced massive stars who have had major careers.' " On the panel, Carey serves as the music industry lifer but says she generally focuses on vocal chops. "I know everyone's like, 'We can't have schmaltzy answers,' " she says. "Well guess what? Some people still want to be inspired. Some people need to have that kind of validation and to feel like, if this person did it, then I can. And I do have one of those stories."

Minaj was surprised she was called and accepted, probably not as surprised as Idol's incoming diva Carey was to hear of Minaj's hiring in September. According to multiple sources, the singer -- who has sold 200 million albums worldwide since her 1990 debut and is mom to 20-month-old twins Monroe and Moroccan (they've yet to visit the Idol set because "they're a little big now; they run around, and it can be dangerous," she says) -- was promised top billing as Idol's queen bee, with a J.Lo-style focus on her pedigree as a vocalist, songwriter and producer. And deservedly so: Carey's songs are among the most-performed by Idol contestants, the vast majority of whom fall far short of her five-octave range. If there was to be a fourth judge hired, an insider tells THR, Carey was "pretty much assured" it would not be another female.

And, as Carey saw for herself firsthand during the North Carolina auditions in October, Minaj also has a bit of a temper. In a grainy cell phone video, beamed around the world by TMZ and countless online outlets, the two judges are shown getting into a heated exchange, during which Minaj seemingly calls Carey "your royal f--ing highness" while Carey complains of being subjected to the tantrum of "a 3-year-old." Those were the milder epithets. According to Carey, speaking with Barbara Walters on The View the morning after the footage leaked, there might have been a threat -- possibly verbal, definitely perceived.

When asked about the exchange, Carey says she has "yet to figure out" why the situation escalated as it did. "Sometimes things get heated for their own reasons," she evades

Warwick says he was "quite surprised" at the Minaj-Carey altercation "and how it took off the way it did." The TV veteran, a friend of Lythgoe's going back to their childhood in Liverpool during the 1960s, found the tussle "unnerving," telling THR: "I'm a family man with three kids. If they acted like that, it would be, 'Upstairs to bed!' Personally, I'm not over the moon that it happened. But if you asked me, as a professional, is it good for the show? The answer would probably be yes."
For good measure, Lythgoe assures that, unlike Australia's broadcast of American Idol, which is playing up the "War of the Divas" storyline (see sidebar) in a promo, he has no plans to use the footage in advance of or during the season.

But fight or no fight, the point persists: Idol is a family show with a strong Southern voting block that is notoriously conservative; will its audience embrace an envelope-pushing rapper with a larger-than-life persona?

To that end, one needn't think back all that far -- to the 2012 Grammys, for instance, when Minaj presented an exorcism-themed performance of her song "Roman Holiday" after walking the red carpet wearing a fire-red cloak and accompanied by a pope lookalike, or to any of her videos -- to wonder: Would Minaj have to tone down her outre look to fit the Idol mold? "I could think of at least one other person that shows more cleavage and skin than me," jabs Minaj, clearly insulted by the insinuation and rolling her inchlong false lashes in the direction of the dressing room two doors down: Carey's.

Anyway, I'll update with the setlist and pics later tonight.
But the highlights (except a great concert of course) where:

Jermaine Dupri & Bryan-Michael Cox Have Ten Songs Recorded For New Mariah Carey Album

In an interview with producer Bryan-Michael Cox, who co-produced her lead single “Triumphant (Get ‘Em)”, YouKnowIGotSoul exclusively learned some details on the project.

“We did like ten songs. I don’t know how many songs are going to stick, but Mariah is like our sister. We love her and she calls. She always calls and a lot of artists don’t call. Mariah is one that consistently is like “If we’ve worked before, we can work again.” I love Mariah for that because she’s a true friend. We did a bunch of songs and I think four or five may stick. We’re excited about it.”
