Chart Watch Extra: The Top 15 Album Acts Of
The Bar-Code Era
There were charts before 1991, of course. Billboard first ran an album chart in March 1945. It became a regular weekly feature 11 years later. But precise sales figures weren't authenticated and made public until Nielsen/SoundScan brought the business into the modern bar-code-reading age (for better and for worse). Five of the top 15 artists are country music stars,
a sign of country's dominance in this period. Five are rock or hard rock
acts. Three are pop. Surprisingly, only one, Mariah Carey, has an
R&B connection. Eminem is rap's lone representative.
I was reading the message boards for Chart Watch the other day and came across a comment that these numbers are only shipment figures, not sales figures. The reader was confusing Nielsen/SoundScan figures with the gold and platinum certifications awarded by the Recording Industry Assn. of America (RIAA). Let me give you an example of how the two organizations
sometimes differ: Rihanna's current album, Good Girl Gone Bad, was certified
double-platinum (2 million) on Aug. 14. Yet its current sales total is
1,812,000. How can that be? Because the RIAA counts shipments, while Nielsen/SoundScan
measures sales. The great advantage of the Nielsen/SoundScan numbers is
that they are so precise and accurate. So don't believe everything you
read in the message boards-or anywhere else.

However when Mariah left her hotel by car, the fans shooted her name and showed their gifts, her assistant was sent to pick up the gifts to not let the fans disappointed. Oprah Winfrey has put the Mariah Carey pregnancy rumors to rest -- for now. There's no baby for Carey, Winfrey said on her show Friday. Internet rumors were buzzing that Carey would be making a surprise appearance on the show's "Hot Topics" episode today. However, a Harpo rep confirmed here Wednesday that Carey wouldn't make an appearance. Winfrey says she called Carey about the rumors,
and they're absolutely not true.

| Universal Music Group plans 'Hulu-like' site?
Universal Music Group, the largest of the major recording companies, plans to launch a "Hulu-like" video portal, a source close to the company told CNET News. The new venture would offer professionally produced music videos as well as other original programming that features the label's artists. The Killers, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, and Amy Winehouse are just a few of the company's acts. A Universal spokesman declined to comment. Doug Morris, Universal's chairman and CEO, wants
to squeeze more revenue out of music videos and offer artists a new and
much glossier platform to display their talents than what is available
to them online now, the music industry source said.

Q1: How was it trying it to get into character, the whole process of creating the song, and writing a song through a character who had gone through so much traumatic stuff? Mariah: Thank you for the question. The process was very different than writing for myself because it was obviously part of the script. So I tried to go into the mindset of what Krystal was going through and trying to to, again, serve the script, and do my best. Q2: Did you learn anything about yourself while filming this movie? Mariah: I was blessed to be working with the wonderful
people that I worked with and to have someone like Lee to take me under
his wing and allow me to grow as an artist. Really, just not to be put
into one category and explore more of who I am. I guess if I had to pick
just one thing out of the many things that I learned it's that I'm capable
of learning more than I thought because I had Lee's input. So, thank you

The troika of rap pioneers marks another feather in the cap of the Music Hall, which over the past few years has grown from a pipe dream into a key player in the Long Island music community. Last year's inaugural ceremony surprised skeptics by securing appearances from Billy Joel, Joan Jett, Peter Criss of Kiss and Leslie West of Mountain, among others. The strong showing by rappers may also help bring Long Island's music scene out of the classic-rock and grunge eras and into the current age of hip-hop-dominated music. LL Cool J, a St. Albans, Queens, native, will be inducted by Grandmaster Flash, who hails from the Bronx but now lives on Long Island. Financiers' fingers crossed that Mariah will turn up to hit high notes at CLSA gala As first reported by our business industry insider colleague Ben Kwok in his Lai See column, the headline entertainment for the coming CLSA investors' conference will be the pneumatic diva Mariah Carey. The self-nicknamed multi-octave singer Mimi - who also officially became a cougar when she got hitched to rapper Nick Cannon, 10 years her junior, last year - will be appearing at the financial forum's private gala at the Convention and Exhibition Centre. However, Ben got a little ahead of himself when he suggested the conference was this week. Actually, it starts on Monday and Carey's big show is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24. CLSA delegates should keep their fingers crossed, though, as the two most recent efforts to bring Carey to town resulted in last-minute cancellations. Mind you, the chance to see a pop hit-maker is probably the least of a bunch of financiers and investors' concerns, considering the market is plunging to depths lower than the front of Carey's dresses. Film unit grabs rights to Lee Daniels pic Vivendi Entertainment has grabbed all U.S. rights to "Tennessee," the latest pic from "Monster's Ball" producer Lee Daniels. Directed by Aaron Woodley ("Rhinoceros Eyes") and written by Russell Schaumburg, the film was produced by Daniels in association with Smokewood Entertainment. Adam Rothenberg, Ethan Peck and Mariah Carey star in the tale of two brothers on a journey to their hometown in search of their estranged father. Carey plays an aspiring singer who flees her abusive husband to join them. In the film, Carey performs original ballad "Right to Dream," which she co-wrote with Willie Nelson. Vivendi has set a December release.

How's this for a twist: Of all the No. 1 songs in the 50 years of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Chubby Checker's "The Twist" ranks as the most popular single. Elvis and the Beatles didn't even make the top five. Checker's ranking may come as a surprise to some, but not to the classic rocker. "I'm glad they've finally recognized it," said Checker of his early 1960s hit. Santana's "Smooth," featuring Rob Thomas, is the No. 2 most popular, followed by Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife," Leann Rimes' "How Do I Live" and "The Macarena" by Los Del Rio. The Beatles did make the top 10, coming it at No. 8 with "Hey Jude." But Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" and Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" are ahead of that hit. Kinou phoned to Sud Radio's DJ to request Mariah's "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time", the nice DJ talked a lil' and said as Mariah is currently #2 in their Top 30, there was a big chance she could be #1 next Saturday due to all the requests and votes received this week. He then made a challenge, he said if in the next hour a lot of Mariah fans streamed the Top 30, he would tell if Mariah was #1. We had only like 45 mins to post messages on fan boards and forums. Thanks a lot to the ones who showed interest and streamed. When we phoned back, the DJ told us Mariah will be #1 in their Top 30 this Saturday.

Mariah Carey is her own replacement. E! News has exclusively confirmed that the Grammy winner has found a different role for longtime talent manager Benny Medina and will now be representing herself. Carey and Medina, who have worked together for more than five years, both say that they will continue to collaborate: Medina's Handprint Entertainment will continue to develop content for, and with, the singer, but Carey's own Maroon Entertainment will be managing her career. Initial reports from outlets such as the New York Post's Page Six and the New York Daily News said Tuesday that Carey, 38, had dumped Medina, possibly Medina had been "courting" his former client (and reported Carey rival) Jennifer Lopez. But Carey and Medina turned to E! to clear up the speculation and explain the terms of their new relationship. "Press Reports have not been accurate," Carey said in a statement. "Benny Medina and I will continue to work together on projects both present and in the future. I'm looking forward to working with Benny on what we have been developing, and to his continued involvement in my creative life." A source close to the situation tells E! that the revised deal is really driven by what Mariah feels is the best way to streamline her own company, Maroon Entertainment. Medina, who recently parted ways with Usher, issued the following statement to us: "Being as involved as I have been over the last
five years, I am reminded how great teamwork leads to great success. This
affords me the opportunity to work on some great projects with Mariah,
including the upcoming tour, an HBO Christmas movie and a variety music
show for CBS, as well as to pursue some of my other productional interests."

Justin narrowly missed being punched in the face when a fan tried to take a photo of him on her camera, and his minder kicked off, screaming at the girl and snatching the camera off her to delete the pic. | "Stand Up to Cancer" raises more than $100
million since May
That "Stand Up to Cancer" telethon -- which aired on ABC, CBS and NBC simultaneously -- pushed money raised for research beyond $100 million. The starry tribute featured Patrick Swayze, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Jack Black, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Garner, Jennifer Aniston, Sheryl Crow, Christina Applegate, Katie Couric, Charles Gibson, Brian Williams and many others. Preliminary ratings for the telethon put the average audience at 10.3 million for the hour. The initiative started in late May and the money total reflects all the donations since then. Here's more good news from Lisa Paulsen, head of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, the charity group behind the effort. In a statement Sunday, she said, "One hundred percent of the more than $100 million raised will go directly to funding the research programs necessary to battle this insidious disease." The entertainment industry comes in for a lot
of criticism. But when it does something good, it needs to be saluted.
And this was an exemplary effort.

Nick Cannon is ready to mix business with pleasure — but only if his wife, Mariah Carey, agrees. “Of course I would work with her!” Nick tells In Touch, but adds, “I am going to leave it up to her.” In the meantime, he’s keeping busy with his solo projects. “I’ve been working on some other stuff, so I don’t think we’ll do a record soon,” says Nick, 27. Of course, their past job together turned out nicely for the couple — they fell in love shortly after he starred in Mariah’s music video for “Bye Bye.” Something else they could do together? Nick says that he wouldn’t mind having kids soon. “That would be a beautiful thing,” he says. It was love at first sight when Nick and Mariah, 39, met in Antigua to shoot her video in March. Some of you (not all thank god) are sometimes so weird, when there's no info about a possible Tour, you're mad, when we have the info that in August, "Concerts West" was routing Mariah's upcoming Tour, you're mad too. What did you expected? Me posting the venues, the dates, the prices of the tickets and maybe even the Setlist .
I said I was gonna post a lil' info and I did, most of you are not
pleased or excited with it? I was, as we now know for sure people
are currently routing the Tour and I wanted to share it, next time I'll

When I posted the "Aaaaaaaahhhhhh" and the dancing banana (I know... but I love that banana ),
I was in a hurry and also I was waiting for an info.
We all hoped for some info hinting or confirming there would really be a Tour, even if Mariah already talked about it, some pessimistic fans/people thought there wouldn't be one and started to spread a doubt. I'll not give you dates and venues, even if I knew it I wouldn't post it as I don't think it should be posted before an official announcement or on tickets and venues websites. Anyway, here's the lil' info, I said earlier today it would be a lil' info, it is, but at least it's the first concrete info

UNCF -- the United Negro College Fund -- finalized its lineup of presenters and performers scheduled to appear on its 30th anniversary annual television special, "An Evening of Stars Tribute to Patti LaBelle." Fox, "Entertainment Tonight" correspondent Kevin Frazier, Tom Joyner, BET Chairman and CEO Debra Lee, LisaRaye McCoy, Duane Martin, Mo'Nique, Shemar Moore, Holly Robinson Peete, "Access Hollywood's" Shaun Robinson, Dr. Ian Smith of VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club," Raven-Symoné and Essence Cares founder Susan Taylor are among those slated to appear when the annual UNCF celebration of educational excellence is taped Sept. 13 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Touch My Body may not have been the best single to launch the brilliant E=MC2, but this soulful sure-fire hit more than makes up for it. With an old skool backing and wonderfully rich vocals (but not overdone) this is Mariah at her very best. Summer may have faded quicker than your non existent
tan, but Ms Carey will ensure that she brings sunshine direct to your iPod
with this superb single.
The third single from her E=MC2 album sticks rigidly to the formula that made Mariah a superstar again after the Glitter fiasco: midtempo R&B beats, cooing choruses and a vocal performance that's surprisingly restrained from a woman with eight octaves at her disposal and no-one to tell her what to do. Yet, in spite of its predictability, 'I'll Be
Lovin' U Long Time' still makes for a satisfying listen, sounding classy,
effortless and as summery as a glass of rosé in the garden after
a work. Plus, as with most things Mariah does these days, there's an intriguing
hint of strangeness lurking just beneath the surface – who else would name
a song about eternal dovotion after a line from Full Metal Jacket?
