Fatman Scoop freestyling on "It's like That"
Wednesday, May the 4th., Fatman Scoop will be in Brussels freestyling at "Planet Brasil" (trendy club).  He will freestyle on "It's Like That" among other tracks, and the night promises to be great, as the MP Family DJs will be there too (these are the ones who supported "What Would U Do" in their club when I did the promotion of this track a while ago).  If some of you plan to go to the party, drop me a little mail, so we can maybe meet.

"It's Like That" on MCM Belgique
On the Belgian TV channel MCM Belgique (for the French speaking part of Belgium), "It's Like That" is doing great as the video is in high rotation on "Ultra Club", "Ultra Tubes", "Ultra Hip Hop" and Clipline .  Even if the single is not a commercial success (it went on sale a week before the commercial release of the album and only on a cardboard sleeve single (no remixes)), the track and video get a lot of airplay.

Carey regrets not romancing Tupac
Mariah Carey will go to her grave regretting the fact she never acted on rapper Tupac Shakur's fondness for her.
The pop superstar was well aware of the compliments Shakur paid her and still thinks he could have been the love of her life if she'd only acted on instinct and dumped her husband Tommy Mottola to be with the late rap icon.
Carey even has a photo of the rapper taking a bubble bath hanging up in her New York home.
She says, "Everybody always told me that he liked my music and I was always complimented by that."
Carey admits her heart still flutters when she remembers her only encounter with Tupac at a post-GRAMMYS party.
She recalls, "He was driving by in this white Rolls Royce -this was when I was still with Tommy - and he just stops and I see him, and he's like, `Hey, Mariah.'
"I just said hi and then had to go back in... It could have been perfect."
Shakur was killed in a drive-by shooting incident in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1996.

IN & AROUND 'Emancipation'
By Tracey Ferguson Scatina
When did Mariah Carey get so hot? It seems like she has been around forever and she just keeps getting hotter!
The songbird, who burst onto the pop scene in the early ’90s, is back - but this time she is full of attitude and oozing with confidence.
Carey came back in a big way. Not only does she have talent, she is gorgeous and seems to be forever young. She looks better than she did when she first became popular more than a decade ago.
“The Emancipation of Mimi” is truly an escape, a declaration of freedom. It’s almost as if Carey is giving up on the sweet style and going for unabated sex appeal and self-expression.

Friday Fire
Speaking of "It's Like That," in a previous Fire, I got on Mariah Carey saying that I thought the single could have been better. Well, it looks like 400,000 plus people strongly disagree as the single helped MC knock 50 off his throne en route to capturing the number one spot. One thing about Mariah is she an outright true artist. Anyone that writes her own songs, and can maintain a voice like that will always be alright, even during hard times. Mariah is doing great...

Mariah: "Take me seriously as a songwriter"
Mariah Carey is tired of constantly having to remind people she's a songwriter because they're convinced she's just a diva with a voice.
The hitmaker, who remains the world's best-selling female artist, can't understand why record executives look down on her songwriting talents.
She says, "People can understand that Alicia Keys writes because she's got the piano in front of her most of the time and that's her thing and people relate.
"And if they see Melissa Etheridge with a guitar they get it, but they see me being very diva and they're like, 'Oh, that's all she does,' but really the writing, to me, is more than half of what I do."

So we're gonna talk about Mariah Carey for a minute.
by Julianne Shepherd
Knowing all I know about the music business, and how it can work on a back-alley boardroom network of wheedles, deals, pay-pals, PR dollars and bank-transfer nep 'o' tizmz, it says something that Mariah Carey's slightly-flaccid-with-a-couple-summer-sleepers The Emancipation of Mimi debuted at Number One on the Billboard Charts. She sold 404,000 copies in one week, which means her fanbase-- despite the constant media-ribbings of her billion-years-ago hospitalization for nerves and breakdowns--is still fairly rocksolid, and her label sitch is looking good (even despite some kinda-fluffy duets like last summer's unfairly reviled drug-hustler romance cut "U Make Me Wanna" with Jadakiss, which I liked-- perhaps too much).

For The Record
Mariah Carey hopes to translate having a hit album into having a hit Broadway musical. The singer is writing a story around the songs on her 1994 album, Merry Christmas, plus two new songs she's planning to write. "I'm such a festive person, and I love Christmas. I'm so over the top with it that this is a bit much, but it's perfect for me," Carey said. "I get a chance to live out my Christmastime fantasies vicariously through the show. I think it's going to be fun and something families can go to see."

Heroes note: Can someone tell me if Mariah will act in the Broadway musical as well in addition of writing the story?  Maybe I missed the news, but I don't remember reading Mariah will act in the musical.  Thanks .

Will Mariah make a cameo in AJ Calloway's pilot?

It seems so, Melissa e-mailed me to tell AJ said on 106 & Park that Mariah will make a cameo in his pilot.
I did some research and found that the pilot is for a comedy called "The Show with AJ Calloway", in which he will play a fictionalized version of himself.  Offstage issues involving former girlfriends, intrusive family members and friends complicate his work life.
"The Show" is produced by Sony Pictures TV and Handprint Entertainment.
David Goetch, Benny Medina, Jeff Pollack and Evan Weiss are executive producing the pilot. Calloway will receive a co-exec producer credit along with Mike Brillstein and Adam Lublin.

Mariah has no love Jones for Hot97: Singer flakes on appearance; chooses Star Power instead
*Mariah Carey got caught up in the pissing match between New York’s rival hip hop/R&B stations Hot 97 and Power-105 Tuesday morning.
Mimi was scheduled to appear on Hot 97’s morning show with host Miss Jones and her WQHT (Hot 97) morning team.  But at the last minute, the singer flaked and instead appeared on Power (WWPR) with hosts Star and Buc Wild.  According to the “New York Daily News,” Miss Jones and her co-hosts began promoting Carey’s appearance on the air at 6 a.m. At the same time, Star was live on Power stating that he and his team don't need guests; that they have enough to say without them.
But at 8 a.m., Carey showed up at Power and went on the air with Star, who joked around with the artist during the relaxed interview – at one point even asking Carey if she would ever sing a duet with Jennifer Lopez. (She declined to answer.)
When Miss Jones and her team found out that Carey was across town, she began calling the artist and her people unprofessional, among other unflattering names. There was no official explanation why Carey went to Power.

Mimi Can't Hold Off Matchbox Man Rob Thomas
According to the latest SoundScan figures, Something to Be, Thomas' first batch of fresh-baked tracks as a solo artist, netted opening-week sales of nearly 252,000 and will bring Mariah Carey's tenure as Billboard's pack leader to an early end. But Thomas' first-week conquest was not a blowout.
Carey's new one, The Emancipation of Mimi, closed out its second week in the retail realm with sales of little more than 226,000, bringing the album's two-week total to 631,000 plus. So while Thomas manages to bump Mariah from the chart's top spot, it wasn't exactly an overwhelming defeat. A 44 percent slip in Mimi scans undoubtedly helped his cause.

Belgian update
Universal Belgium confirms "We Belong Together" as second single too, but the release date and airplay dates are not fixed at the moment as it will depend of the success of "It's Like That". They don't want 2 tracks at the same moment.
About the Tour, they are not aware of any project including Belgium in "The Emancipation of Mimi" Tour.
It all depends again of the promoter in each country.

Mariah's Star turn bedevils Miss Jones
Mariah Carey ignited a minidrama at hip-hop radio yesterday morning when she apparently stood up Hot-97 for a long chat with Star over at rival Power-105.
Miss Jones and the WQHT (97.1 FM) team, unsurprisingly, were furious, calling Carey and her people unprofessional along with a number of less complimentary names.
The drama started a little after 6 a.m., when Miss Jones and her team said Carey would be coming on the show live.
Over on WWPR (105.1 FM), meanwhile, Star was saying that he and his team don't need guests, that they have enough to say without them.
Around 8 a.m., though, Carey came on with Star, kicking off an extended, cordial chat during which Carey seemed to enjoy sparring as Star periodically tried to coax her into saying indiscreet things.
She declined, for instance, to flat-out say whether she would sing a duet with Jennifer Lopez.
She said she had been "counted out" enough times that she feels she needs to be "more generous" toward others.
There was no official explanation why Carey went to Power. The team at Hot first said she had been delayed, then finally acknowledged she wasn't showing.
One reason she may have gone to Star is that he raved on the air recently about her comeback CD, "The Emancipation of Mimi" - which got mixed reviews, but topped the charts last week.
In any case, Star's team was not concerned about the reason she was there.
"Needless to say," said Star's sidekick Crossover Negro Reese Hopkins after the show, "the Star and Buc Wild interview with Ms. Carey was a success."

Jermaine Dupri about Michael Jackson's case
At Mariah Carey's album release party on Thursday in New York, Jermaine Dupri – the boyfriend of Michael’s sister Janet – told a newspaper: "People have to watch out, because you don't ever know what's going to happen if the outcome turns out to his favor. Look at Mariah's situation — how many people thought she was crazy, had a breakdown, and now the whole world wants her."

One chance only
Tony Danza got a taste of paparazzi rage the other night when he showed up at Mariah Carey's album release party for her No. 1 CD, "The Emancipation of Mimi." A spy reports the chat show host "did the press line quickly, then tried to go into the party. But the photographers did not get their shot, so they shouted for him to come back. Tony refused, so they booed him, badly and loudly." To make matters worse, it was Danza's 54th birthday. Also on hand were Universal Music chairman Doug Morris, L.A. Reid with wife Erica, Benny Medina, Jermaine Dupri and Denzel Washington.

Save Eric Roberts
Eric Roberts isn't a creep - he just plays one on TV. And in movies. And in music videos.
The actor brother of Julia, who faded into semi-obscurity after an early '80s heyday, currently appears in not one but three MTV videos as a devious, controlling womanizer.
It's that sleazeball Svengali role he aced in "Star 80" - 22 years ago - and has been saddled with ever since. Now he's slithering around in a Mariah Carey two-parter and the "Mr. Brightside" clip from the Killers, once again portraying the quintessential lurker-perv-shademeister.
He spies on a sultry Mariah through closed-circuit TV, then lures her away from her true love. In the Killers vid, he skulks around a brothel like a lecherous pimp.
It's come to this. Please, somebody save Eric Roberts. Stop him before he slimeballs again.
This is a devoted family man whose greatest wish is to eradicate child abuse. News flash: Eric Roberts is not a scumbag.
"I am so unlike that," he told me last week during a break in filming a part on "CSI: Miami."
So, why does he keep getting cast as a sleaze?
"I think it's because I can look like trouble," he guessed, "in the way a fast car might be trouble.".
"You know what," says Roberts, "playing a villain is not more fun. Except for maybe all the cool clothes.
What I'd really love is to play someone who saves children.
Are any directors out there listening? Quentin Tarantino, give this guy a Travolta role, quick! He's your next Vincent Vega.
Roberts was great once. He stood tall. He stood out. He stood in the middle of the street in "The Pope of Greenwich Village," shouting, "The cop s--t his pants!"
Bring back that guy. I want more of that guy.
Roberts has talent, range and that cool quaky voice - so why is he stuck in decent-script Siberia?
C'mon, Tarantino. Give the guy a call.

Mariah's debt to society
Mariah Carey totally hearts you - yes, you - for taking her back to No. 1. She told me so herself.
"I'm just excited, and you know what? I owe it all to the fans," she said at a party for her blockbuster comeback, "The Emancipation of Mimi," on Thursday night. "Because they stuck with me and they are feeling this album, so it's an exciting thing.
"I just want to say thank you and they always know how much I appreciate them, but it's so nice to have such incredible fans that never let me down, and they encourage me and inspire me."

Carey has no problem with cannabis
RnB artist Mariah Carey hates cigarette smoke but has no problem spending time with rappers indulging in marijuana.
The Always Be My Baby singer, who collaborated with rapper SNOOP DOGG on her new album The Emancipation of Mimi, was worried about the effect cannabis smoke would have on her voice - but she is delighted to report no ill effects.
Carey says, "Smoke? I don't think he smokes cigarettes. It may be smoky around Snoop but that isn't cigarettes and cigarette smoke is the worst smoke for your voice. Rappers smoke things that don't seem to bother my throat."

Mariah is so fascinated with the website she regularly checks in to the news pages, entitled The Emancipation Of Jack, after her chart-topping album, and the doggy-obsessed message board.
The beautiful star who, when lonely on a recent photo shoot had Jack flown first class to be by her side, said: "I laughed out loud for 10 minutes when I found out about Jack's website. He really is a very cool dog. Some of his Japanese fans built it for him.
"It talks all about him - like his swimming antics - on his website, love love jack."

Quick Hits
Mariah Carey is working on a duel career as Pop star/children's book author. She began work on her first, titled Automatic Princess, before getting sidetracked with the recording of her new album The Emancipation Of Mimi. She tells MTV, "The way I do things, I need to be involved. I wouldn't just be like, 'Here's a concept, go run with it.' It's still something I really want to do, and I'm going to do, and I'm going to start getting that into production soon." The series of books would be loosely based on Carey's own life as a biracial child.

Mariah Lacking Votes on VH1
Upon recently visiting the VH1 Message Boards, I noticed that there are over 3 pages of votes, and none for Mariah. After clicking onto page 4, there was one fan in particular who was flooding the boards with Mariah, which sparked the following comment from a Rob Thomas fan on the front page, "HMM MARIAH HAS ONE FAN - ROB HAS 1000s! Ugh, another "flooder" on the board. Must be a school holiday for the kiddies. Sigh!"
Please do not use this opportunity to make negative comments towards Rob Thomas and/or his fan base, but rather use this to prove them wrong, and show off our strong fan backbone by voting for Mariah on the VH1 Top 20 Countdown Boards, for "We Belong Together" is yet to premiere:

Mariah Carey, the lingerie queen
Singer Mariah Carey has so much very expensive lingerie, that she has a special closet for it.  Aside a few unflatering clothes Mariah wears sometimes outside of her home, her closet is full of sexy lingeries in several colors.
"I have a closet full of sexy stuffs.  Ok, there's also a skirt and slippers, but forget that.  I like white lingerie with lace.  But, I also like rose and black lingerie ensembles and black lingerie is also very sexy.
All is well organised, so I can easily choose what I want to wear.  The closet is very close to my bathroom.  Instead of going dripped and naked to my closet, I decided to make a special lingerie closet", says the lingerie queen.

Mariah Carey Hits Out At Sony
CAREY SLAMS SONY OVER SNOOP DUET
Superstar Mariah Carey has slammed her former record label Sony for refusing to release her Snoop Dogg collaboration as a single.
The Honey singer, 35, duetted with the rapper on the track Crybaby from her 2000 album Rainbow and was upset when record label bosses decided to keep it as an album track only.
Carey, whose ex-husband is Sony music mogul Tommy Mottola, says, "(The Emancipation of Mimi) is the third time I've worked with Snoop.
"I did Cry Baby with him, but Sony didn't want to release it as a single because, well... I don't know why - some stupid reason. They were always against the whole rap thing.
"Snoop loves my old records. He was really cool the first time we met - he was going on about how much he loved my song Vision of Love. He had the single when he was in jail."
Meanwhile The superstar has urged the British government to ban smoking - so she can party in London without fear of ruining her amazing voice.
The Always Be My Baby singer, 35, admits she usually has a low-key social life when she visits the British capital because the bars and clubs in the city are so smoky.
Carey says, "I'll go to a club (in Britain), but you guys smoke so friggin' much, I can't sing for ages after.
"If everyone in England stops smoking cigarettes then I'll come and party with you."

Mariah Carey is set to become a Bond girl
Mariah Carey is set to become a Bond girl.
The diva is reportedly in serious talks with movie bosses over an offer to star in the forthcoming 007 film.
The millionaire singer - who has had scores of offers since her new 'Emancipation Of Mimi' album topped the charts in US and Japan - is also planning to launch her own diamond jewellery range.
A source close to the singer revealed: "The offers have been flooding in recently. She's in talks about playing a Bond girl and is also about to design her own jewellery."
Meanwhile, Mariah is still in therapy.
The sexy singer, who had an emotional breakdown in 2001 following the breakdown of her marriage to Sony boss Tommy Mottola, admits she still sees a psychiatrist for guidance. She said: "I went into therapy and I still am, but not every day."
Mariah, who has sold an incredible 150million albums and singles worldwide, also claims her breakdown was also triggered by issues relating to her bi-racial family as well as her failed marriage.
She added: "People tend to think it was about being in a bi-racial family and that certainly was an issue. But there were more specific events at home that I had to deal with."

Has Mariah Got A New Man?

Brett Ratner and Mariah Carey have got tongues wagging with a touchy-feely show of affection.
He could barely keep his hands off the songstress at the US premiere of Nicole Kidman's new movie The Interpreter.
Director Brett - who has worked on Mariah's music videos in the past - tentatively put his hand on her stomach as they posed for pics outside New York's Ziegfeld Theatre.
He's a single guy again after recently splitting with tennis ace Serena Williams - and Mariah is also apparently unattached.
They were among a star-studded audience who turned out for the fourth annual Tribeca Film Festival, which opened with the special showing of The Interpreter, also starring Sean Penn.
The movie, the first ever allowed to shoot inside United Nations headquarters, launched a 13-day cinematic celebration that boasts 59 world premier features.
The premiere attracted U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, actress Naomi Watts and festival co-founder Robert De Niro among the celebrity crowd.

Carey: Meeting Ex-Hubby Mottola Was Weird
She was all smiles when she met ex-hubby Tommy Mottola at the recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame festivities, but Mariah Carey says the moment wasn't exactly comfortable.
Carey planned to make a brief appearance at last month's event at the request of Antonio "L.A." Reid, who is chairman of her label, Island Def Jam. But to her surprise, she was seated at the same table as Mottola and his new wife, singing star Thalia.
Mottola and Carey had a bitter breakup, and she has described her marriage to her former mentor as controlling. When the pair saw each other, they exchanged kisses and pleasantries, but Carey said the meeting was "just weird."
"He was a gentleman," Carey told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "He was nice, but I wasn't about the photo op, and I was kind of like bamboozled."
Carey said the last time she was at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies, she was a young superstar, Stevie Wonder had invited her to sing onstage with her — "and I wasn't allowed to go up there, and that was the last time I went to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."
She says tries not to reconnect with her past with Mottola for a reason.
"That period of my life was so damaging, that it's like, if I even connect with who I was during that period of my life, it's a very physically ... I can feel it," she said.
Carey is in a happier place these days — especially since her new album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," is expected to debut at No. 1 this week.
After Carey left him, Mottola was ousted from the top job at Sony Music and now runs his own label.

Universal to launch video net
By Phyllis Furman
Universal Music Group is free to rock - on its own cable TV network.
Following a court victory,  the record giant is set to launch IMF: The International Music Feed, the first 24-hour cable channel launched by a music company.
The MTV-like network is set to go on the air as early as today on satelltie giant EchoStar's Dish Network, which is carried in 10 million homes.
IMF will start out by featuring videos from Universal's roster, which includes superstars like Eminem, Shania Twain, 50 Cent and U2. But execs said they expect to eventually feature music from other companies.
"The intention is to play the world's most popular music," the network's boss, Andy Schuon, told the Daily News.
EchoStar had earlier refused to carry IMF, which had been set to launch three months ago. Universal sued EchoStar, claiming it breached an agreement with Universal.

Universal strikes deal to bill for music videos
By Tim Arango
Tired of seeing other companies building business with free content from the music industry, Universal Music reached a deal yesterday to begin charging America Online for streaming music videos over the Internet.
The deal follows Universal's announcement in February that it would no longer provide videos for free to online, satellite and cable companies for use over video-on-demand services.

A big thanks to Sylvia who took time to translate it for you all.
There are a lot of things in it that we already knew and a few things that aren't really correct.   Mostly it's just neutral, but they do give good critics 'bout the album.
The comeback of a real diva
Mariah Carey makes with ‘TEOM’ the strongest album ever
The most recent years Mariah Carey only got in the news because of her excentric lifestyle and diva manners. Now there is her new record, ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’. Critics agree: it’s her strongest album ever. And that when she received 25 million Euros from her record company to – please- not sing anymore.
'The emancipation of Mimi' is the tenth studio album of Mariah Carey. Mimi is a nickname, that’s what only her best friends and family call her. ‘At home, I’m mimi, onstage I’m Mariah Carey’ says Carey. ‘For a long time that was the only way to keep work and private life separated. But I feel stronger now and I don’t need masks, alter ego’s or dress-ups anymore. I’m ready to show the world what I’m really like.’
How doughy this may sound, she seems to be serious about it. On her latest album, Mariah’s returning to her roots: R’n B, mixed with pop and hip hop. Before the singer seemed more likely to want to proof what kind of acrobatic stunts she could perform with her voice, what often lead to endless and artificial ‘bleating’. ‘I’m really happy about this record. In this music I recognize myself.’ says Mariah.
Excentric mother
Carey comes from far. De singer was born 34 years ago in New York. Her mother was Irish-American and was abandoned by her parents when she wanted to get married. Her fiancé was half Venezualan, half black. A scandal, or so the family thought – and the neighbourhood where they lived. The cars from Mariah’s parents were often set on fire, their dogs got poisoned. After three years her parents collapsed under the pressure and they decided to say goodbye. Mariah stayed with her mother, an opera-singer who gave up on her career to take care of her children. Soon she noticed that Mariah had the same gift. When she was four, she went to her first singing lesson. Just for fun, and it would take a long time before La Carey was going to take her first professional steps. ‘I’m very happy that my mother didn’t throw me into the music industry way sooner. I could have ended up as Michael Jackson’ tells Mariah.
Madame Mottola
In 1989 Mariah stood face to face with Tommy Mottola for the first time, he was 20 years older and still married. He was happy to accept the demo that Mariah had with her. The rest is history. From one day to another Mariah was world famous and married with the boss of her record label. ‘I was so naïve’ Mariah says. ‘Unknowing and unexperienced. I did have some boyfriends but that never went further than holding hands and giving kisses. Tommy was the first one. I was taken aback.’
Five years and 150 million sold albums later, the fairytale ended. ‘The best proof that you can’t buy happiness. We had everything, but still there was something missing’, tells Mariah. Since then she fluttered around on love level. Only her relationship with Eminem in 2002 cared for commotion in the press. Especially because, after four months, he dumped her through a cold and short phone call.
Emotional breakdown
On professional level there were more spectacular things to announce. When Mariah’s movie ‘Glitter’ and the soundtrack for it flopped, Virgin decided that they wanted to dump her fast. Nevertheless, only a year before, they had her signed a contract for five albums, with an advance of 20 million euro. Their operation ‘dump Mariah’ was being winded up with an historical deal. Virgin gave Mariah Carey a cheque from about 25 million euro as separate premium. Before, never had an artist received so much money for not singing. Mariah ended up having an emotional breakdown. Everyone thought her song was over by now, but she stood up again. No one was waiting for ‘Charmbracelet’; her album from 2002, but now, three years later with ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’ it seems like Mariah is on the right track again. 2005 is going to be the year of the comeback of a real diva.

Mariah Carey's London
By Sophie Goodwin
Where do you live and why?
New York. I was born and bred there and I love my city
What was the last play you saw in London?
Whenever I'm in London I'm always so busy working on promo, but I'm planning to come for a holiday to go to art galleries and to see some theatre shows.
What is your earliest London memory?
When I was first here years ago, I wasn't really allowed to do my own thing so I only ever saw my hotel room.
What have been your most memorable London meals?
Mr Chow in Knightsbridge is a favourite. I like to go there to relax with friends. I've been to a bagel shop on Brick Lane, too, which was fun.
And I always see my friend Jasmine Dotiwala who works for MTV and whom I first met on The Word in the Nineties. I go round to her house and we cook together.
What do you miss most when you're out of London?
My close friends who live in London, my British fans who have always been very loyal to me and, of course, the English accent that I adore and can do a pretty good impression of, occasionally.
What are your favourite home comforts?
My Jack Russell, Jack. Whenever I see him I know I'm truly home.
What are your extravagances?
Shopping for family and friends and having my personal masseuse on the road with me.
What is your life philosophy?
Live and let live, and pack as much fun as possible into each day.
What was the last CD you bought?
I usually listen to mixed tapes that my DJ friends make for me and the radio. I love Kierra Sheard (daughter of gospel singer Karen Clark).
Which fragrance do you wear?
I only wear essential body oils, such as lemon bud, orange essence and camomile, that I custom-blend to mix with my natural body chemistry.
What are your current projects?
Auctioning my haute-couture dresses on eBay for charity. Promoting my latest album The Emancipation of Mimi.
Tourist tips
What advice would you give to a tourist?
Don't try to talk to the guards at Buckingham Palace.
On parade
What would you do if you were Mayor for the day?
Take the Notting Hill Carnival to the Mall and Buckingham Palace.
Holiday hotspots
Where were the last three places you went on holiday?
Last summer I was in Capri, but I spent half the time in the studio. I took my friends skiing in Aspen for Christmas. We had cosy nights in listening to music in front of a fire - sheer bliss. Last summer myself and a few friends went to Richard Branson's Necker Island. It was paradise on earth.
Bookworm
What were the last books you bought?
The Autobiography of Malcolm X and The Bombshell Manual of Style by Laren Stover. Books are usually gifts from friends.
Watering hole
Do you have a favourite pub? What's so special about it?
I prefer restaurants to pubs because there is always too much smoke in pubs which is very bad for my voice. But if it wasn't for that I know I would love pubs as I would get to taste some Guinness - my mum's Irish.
Wheels
How do you get around town?
In my Maybach (a luxury German car made by Mercedes' sister company), available only through Mayfair Cars in London.
Little black book
Who is in your secret address book?
Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, because I can always rely on them. HMV stores for DVDs, Chanel on Bond Street and Cutler and Gross for sunglasses. I go to Joan Boyce in New York for gold jewellery and Oliver Peoples for sunglasses.
Good buys
What items are in your spring wardrobe?
Louis Vuitton knits with pencil skirts, a Gucci trench coat, Donna Karan jersey-knit skirts, shoes by Gianfranco Ferré and a Christian Dior peasant dress.

Chart Preview: Mariah's Emancipation to topple 50's Massacre
Should We Call It a Comeback? Diva’s Latest Hitting a Really High Note.
As the counting continues this Monday morning, it looks like Mariah Carey’s new album, The Emancipation of Mimi (Island) is headed for a huge #1 debut on first-week sales that could reach as high as 400k by the time the chart is final.
That would give Carey her biggest first week ever, outpacing 1999’s Rainbow, which logged first-week sales of around 320k.
But perhaps more importantly, The Carey triumph will end 50 Cent’s six-week, nearly three-million unit run at #1 with The Massacre (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope). As it looks now, 50 is locked in a battle for #2 with Epic’s Mudvayne, whose Lost and Found is on track to sell in the neighborhood of 150k.
Meanwhile, Garbage’s Bleed Like Me (Interscope) is on track to make a #4 debut on first-week sales of over 70k.
And to round out the Top Five, it looks like it will be either Faith Evans, Now 18 or Beck, each of which looks like it will come in at around 60k.

I keep checking Hits Daily Double to see where "The Emancipation of Mimi" is in the first sales chart in the US.  Aren't we all curious?  I am.  In any case, I'm gonna relax a little now, there's nothing more I can do, I did my best and bought the album in the US too to contribute to his success. I'm anxious, curious, I can't wait anymore .... ok, gonna relax a lil'.... inspire.... expire.... calm down.... why is it still not updated????

Good news, I phoned to several cd stores in Brussels and they say the album sells very well, in two of them it was even sold out and they need to order new ones .  In some stores, they have a little poster to announce the new album.

Mariah Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi" was No. 12 on Amazon.com's album charts over the weekend; Jennifer Lopez's "Rebirth" was No. 450. Manager Benny Medina must feel like he backed the right horse, er, diva, in that race. On Monday, we'll see if Carey's numbers this time were as high as predicted.

Violence, confusion condemn this 'State Property 2'
Crime film aims for the urban audience, while offering up cameos by recording stars.
By Michael Rechtshaffen
If the arrival of "State Property 2" is greeted with a chorus of "You mean there was a 'State Property 1?' " the response would be entirely understandable.
A standard-issue urban gangster movie, "State Property" was released only in a handful of target markets at the beginning of 2002 and grossed a couple of million dollars before attracting a following on DVD.
The sequel, which arrives this week in the top eight urban markets, offers more of the same, albeit with a new, playful tone that helps distract from subject matter that feels at least a decade after the fact.
But "SP2's" biggest selling point likely will be the life-imitating-art example of co-star Beanie Sigel, himself considered state property, currently serving a one-year sentence on federal gun charges. Coinciding with the rapper's just-released album "The B. Coming," the Lions Gate release should benefit from all that free publicity.
After bringing the uninitiated into the loop with a handy recap of the first movie, "SP2" checks in with notorious drug lord Beans (Sigel), who still manages to take care of business from his prison cell.
Outside, on the streets of Philadelphia, his ABM Crime Syndicate is engaged in a heated turf war with the Umbrella network, the domain of kingpin Dame (Damon Dash). But things are about to get even nastier when a fellow inmate (Victor N.O.R.E. Santiago), called Pollo Loco by the other characters but officially credited as El Loco, is released from prison with his own agenda.
The ensuing triple-gangster face-off is settled with the usual bullet-and-expletive-ridden results.
Also assuming director's chores this time around, Dash, the founder of the Roc-A-Fella entertainment empire, takes more than a few pages out of Guy Ritchie's "Snatch" stylebook for the sequel's tonal cues, and for a little while at least, the quirky energy gives a much-needed boost to the stale storytelling.
But ultimately, Adam Moreno's screenplay, with its multiple narrators and constantly shifting points of view, makes for mighty confusing viewing.
Dash manages to get maximum mileage out of his Roc-A-Fella connections, however, and in addition to principal roles played by a number of the label's artists (some of whom would be wise to keep their day jobs), there are notable cameos played by the likes of Mariah Carey, Kanye West and the late ODB, who's amusing as a burger flipper with personal hygiene issues.

'De Standaard' review
De voorbije jaren is er genoeg negatieve berichtgeving over Mariah Carey geweest om haar drie keer te begraven. The emancipation of Mimi heeft dan ook het effect van een wedergeboorte. Dat weet Carey ook: ze geeft in het boekje vijf definities van het begrip ,, emancipation'' . Maar vooral slaagt ze erin te verbazen met een behoorlijke plaat.

De openingssong, ,,It's like that'', zet de toon. ,,I gotta know he won't betray my trust/ just like every other mother****er does'' , zingt ze in een weinig manvriendelijk moment.

Translation
Review from the Belgian conservative newspaper "De Standaard"
The passed years there has been enough negative news about Mariah Carey to bury her three times. The Emancipation of Mimi has the effect of a re-birth. Carey knows that too: in the booklet she gives five definitions of the word "emancipation". But, especially, she succeeds to surprise with a proper album.

The opening song ‘It’s like that’ sets the tone. A production of Jermaine Dupri, a fat rap from Fatman Scoop, and lyrics about a bunch of girls that draws all the attention on the dance floor. It’s not new, but it is hip and municipal. Carey avoids the megalomanic trap she fell in a lot in the past, and invited lots of creative people to give her a hand, among them Nelly, Snoop Dogg and Twista. "Say Something" is a Neptunes-production, and no matter what interesting. But Carey pulls the strings and also wrote the most texts. The ballads and midtempo funky tracks are mostly devoted to love. That one is often a spoil-sport. Carey likes to interpret the standpoint of the liberated woman, who does long for love, but isn’t a little goose. "I gotta know he won’t betray my trust/just like every other mother****er does" she sings in a little man-unfriendly moment. Further she seduces us with marketing stunts for Bacardi and Vuitton.

Relying on the cover, on which Carey poses in gold and black, this is her answer to the concurrention of Beyoncé. Carey understood she’s not gonna be a pop diva and returns to RnB, to which she adds some rappers. The songs are mostly average, the production is superiour. Actually you could best describe this as quality wallpaper.

Mariah Carey: Please Meet Mimi
VH1: I told a friend I was interviewing you and he said, "Yeah, Mariah Carey. Where's she been?"
Mariah Carey: Well, here I am.

VH1: Where have you been?
I've been on tour and I've been making an album for a year and a half, which is the longest it's ever taken me to make an album, with the exception of my first record. This is like such a labor of love for me.

VH1: Why did it take so long?
I did 19 or 20 songs. I would do something and love it, and I come up with different ideas of people to collaborate with. Accidents would happen that would be like incredible moments. I was working with the Neptunes and I ended up doing a collaboration with Snoop and then with Nelly because we were all doing our records at the same time. That was just a great moment where it wasn't like you couldn't plan it or even ask for it.

VH1: Have you ever gotten writer's block?
You know what? I don't know that I've had writer's block, because usually when I sit down with somebody - whether I start singing a piano player riffs to play or they go into a chord progression and I start singing melodies on top - we can create something. That's my outlet and it always has been. But I feel like I'm more prolific at this moment than maybe ever.

VH1: So what are you being emancipated from?
I went on a long tangent about what the title meant when the name of the album got leaked, because everybody was like "Mimi? What does that mean?" Nobody understood.

VH1: It's unusual because your titles are usually one definitive word.
Right, but everybody started having their issues about that.

VH1: When you get up to four words, suddenly a statement is being made.
Well, here's what it is: Nobody calls me Mariah except my mother and she doesn't even really call me that. Me and my friends have a million nicknames that we use for each other, but Mimi was a really personal nickname that only people I really love and care about call me. When I proposed the concept of the title to L.A. Reid, the CEO of Island Def Jam, he was like, "I love that, because it's the side of you that I'm hearing in this album, a free-spirited person."

VH1: What's the "It's Like That" video going to be like?
I don't know and neither do you! [Laughs] That's just a saying, I'm not being mean.

VH1: It's being directed by Brett Ratner, so I'm guessing explosions, boats flipping over and a Chris Tucker cameo.
Well, we would love that. Brett Ratner and I did the "Heartbreaker" video together, which is one of the favorite videos that I've ever done. The best thing about it was that it had a sense of humor. That's the thing that Brett brings to the table. He knows me as a person, so he knows that fun side of me, which is what this whole album and project is about.

VH1: Do you ever catch one of your old videos and go, "What was I thinking?"
Constantly! I love "Honey," or the video for the song I did with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, "Breakdown" or "Heartbreaker." But there were ones that everybody was always like, "You're about your voice and who really cares about the video?" Which was okay and I'm glad they thought that way, but it's nice to make fun videos, too.

VH1: Everybody on American Idol is trying to be the next Mariah Carey. Has the show vindicated you as a singer?
Are they really? Because everybody talks about it to me, but I don't watch the show except to see Randy Jackson!

VH1: Is it amusing to see Randy playing judge?
Yes, because I've known Randy since before my first album came out. If it's on and someone's watching it at my house, I'll look at the TV and be like, "What's Randy doing?" because it's funny to me.

VH1: What did he have to say about your voice when you were working together?
We had collaborative moments. He was my musical director on a couple of tours. We'd discuss things; he's not like, "Oh, I think you should do it like this." He's not being annoying in any way.

VH1: Speaking of old collaborators, were you surprised to hear of Ol' Dirty Bastard's passing?
Yes, I was very upset. He was a really unique person, an artist. It's a loss and it's difficult for everybody who cared about him. He was totally unique. He didn't try to be like anybody else. Because of that, it made him stand out. His style of rhyming yet singing yet just going on a tangent with whatever kind of ad lib stuff he would be doing in the background on certain records was always hot.

VH1: Since Butterfly you've embraced an urban sound. As a fan, what's been the most exciting development in hip-hop?
It's amazing that so many people that I've watched their careers explode, like Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri, [have become] the heads of record companies. It's a major accomplishment in terms of how far hip-hop has gotten. It's really nice, because I remember when I was really, really young starting out the executives who turned their nose up at hip-hop and looked at it as a fad. Now I'm like, "Ha ha!"

Mariah breaks out
Carey attempts to free herself from the pop diva image, and does a credible job thanks to her vocal gymnastics
By Jeff Miers
News Pop Music Critic
Fifteen years ago, Mariah Carey arrived like the wail of a siren in the dead of night, paving the way for the success of R&B-laced pop marked by virtuosic, melisma-heavy vocals.
A decade later, the sound Carey spearheaded came to be the stock-in-trade of "American Idol," and spawned a healthy portion of Mariah-imitators. This week, Carey released her latest album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," in hopes that she'll still mean something in the post-Idol, Beyonce-run pop world.
And why not?
Carey is a groundbreaking starlet. Following her arrival in 1990, few female artists in her pop-R&B field were allowed to get by merely singing with conviction or style. After Mariah, you had to be a virtuoso, and if you weren't one, well, that's what then-new recording studio devices like Pro Tools and "pitch correction" were for. But Mariah could wail, and rarely let a tune go by without making sure you knew it, sometimes three or four times per song.
The best moments on "Emancipation" find Carey sounding relaxed and confident in her startling voice. The production is clever, too, as when West manages to weave the '70s hit "Betcha By Golly Wow" rather seamlessly into "Stay the Night," and Dupri assimilates Bobby Womack's masterful "If You Think You're Lonely Now" into "We Belong Together." The ballads - "Mine Again" being the worst offender - are sappy and dripping with melodrama, but will probably appeal to fans of Carey's top-notch vocal aerobics.
From the start, Carey wrote the book on excess purely for its own sake - borrowing a few parts from Patti Labelle, a bit from the coloratura of Stevie Wonder, and the rest from glitzy stage musicals, blending it all in a big-haired, curvaceous pot.
Fresh out of high school as the '80s caved in on themselves, Carey landed a spot singing backup for Brenda K. Starr, so impressing her boss that she passed on Carey's demo tape to then-Sony Music head honcho Tommy Mottola. Mottola wasted no time signing Carey to a contract with Columbia records. Then he married her. Talk about power weddings; they had the market cornered, and Carey spent most of the rest of the '90s selling in the area of 75 million records, making her the biggest-selling female artist in history.
Nothing lasts forever, of course, and in the pop world, this is doubly so. Mottola and Carey didn't make the marriage cut, and soon after their split, she delivered a mega-budget train-wreck of a movie called "Glitter." At least that thing was so bad, it was almost funny. "Glitter" was just plain pathetic, and the industry wasted no time turning on Carey.
In short order, Carey began losing her stuff in public, through a series of strange postings on her Web site and a number of televised meltdowns and temper tantrums. She ended up spending some time in a hospital in Connecticut where, one imagines, she spent time "raking leaves with Liza," to borrow a line from Warren Zevon. The feather in Carey's seemingly crazy cap? Virgin records, her label, paid her 28 million big ones to go away, making her perhaps the highest-paid free agent in pop history.
Bearing all of this in mind, the "emancipation" Carey's new album speaks of isn't one involving spiritual revolution or existential rebirth, but rather, freedom from being labeled a loony-tune diva hanging onto "reality" by a thread not much bigger than a G-string. In that sense, she's hit the jackpot; "The Emancipation of Mimi" is as good as the work that earned Carey her reputation in the first place. It's overwrought, cheesy and cynical in its manipulation of Carey's strengths - which are singing really, really high, singing extremely low, exploiting the sexy space in between, and throwing a club joint or two in there for good measure. She's as able a vocal gymnast as ever, and to her credit, "Emancipation" finds her, once again, co-writing all of her songs.
In the real world, musical artists aren't judged by the clothes they wear or their specific image, but since most of us don't live in the real world, and Carey seems deeply concerned with her appearance, let's have a go at her "new look."
On the cover of "Emancipation," she presents herself as a cross between Beyonce and a towering bronze statue of a lap dancer. Inside the accompanying booklet, she frolics freely beneath a gauzy, see-through white frock of some sort. Here, she looks like . . . well, a stripper.
That's that, then. When in Rome . . .
The music reflects a Carey in touch with exactly what her public demands, and well aware of what her strengths have been in the past. With all the public display of the cracks and fissures in her facade, Carey was in danger here of coming across as a has-been, but she doesn't, employing some hipster producers of the moment - the Neptunes, West, old-schooler Dupri - and enlisting perennial favorites like Snoop Dogg, Nelly and the madcap Twista to offer her record a veneer of the here-and-now. It works.
On balance, this is Carey's strongest album since her 1990 self-titled debut.
Will this matter today, when every wannbe-diva in the world is familiar with the over-singing that Carey made popular, and Beyonce has claimed the pop-dance throne Mariah left vacant while flirting with a nervous breakdown?
Probably.
Carey, it seems, has managed to survive long enough to safely navigate the curve beyond which the old becomes new again.

Carey flies renewed confidence
The Emancipation of Mimi  - Mariah Carey - Island Def Jam/Universal
With her imitators all over radio and American Idol, it's sometimes hard to recall what pop-soul music sounded like before Carey came along. The diva herself remembers, though, as evidenced by the wistful, old-school vibe on Mine Again, Circles and other endearing new tunes.
Breezy, playful tracks such as Say Somethin' (featuring Snoop Dogg) and Get Your Number (with Jermaine Dupri) prove the singer hasn't forsaken her passion for hip-hop. But it's the ballads and midtempo numbers that truly reflect the renewed confidence of a songbird who has taken her shots and kept on flying.

SING OF SPRING
Carey on, my wayward sun
It was one sweet day yesterday for sun-loving songbird Mariah Carey — and the rest of the city.
And it's going to be even sweeter tomorrow, as temperatures soar past 70.
That's the gospel according to the National Weather Service.
Carey, who was cavorting through Central Park yesterday in her best spring clothes, will be able to soak up some rays along with the rest of us — in the park, at the beach, on the golf course, or just walking on down the street.
The high today will be as high as 66 — nine degrees above yesterday's high.
There'll be a little nip in the air — but not to worry.
"It will feel good in the nice April sunshine," says National Weather Service meteorologist Nelson Vaz.

Mariah Carey's 'Mimi' to debut over 'Rainbow'
New York (Billboard) - Go ahead and call it a comeback. Mariah Carey is on course to land her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 since 1997 -- and with her biggest opening week ever.
First-day sales of Carey's new "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/IDJMG) suggest that her eighth studio album could surpass 350,000 units, easily placing it at No. 1 on the big chart.
With a busy promotional schedule during release week -- including visits to "Good Morning America," "TRL," "Live With Regis and Kelly" and "Late Show With David Letterman" -- chart prognosticators suggest Carey's number may rise even higher.
Her last No. 1, "Butterfly" (Columbia/Sony Music), bowed with 235,000 in 1997. Her 1999 set "Rainbow" (Columbia/Sony Music) holds the record for the singer's biggest opening week, having bowed at No. 2 with 323,000 units.

No Mimitation
By Davina Morris
After ten albums and a ground-breaking career, you’d think Mariah would be ready to quit. Au contraire
Having recently released her 10th album The Emancipation of Mimi, US songstress Mariah Carey has probably seen and heard it all. From the rumours about that ‘breakdown’, the hype surrounding her divorce from her former husband/manager Tommy Mottola and the never-ending stories about her supposed diva-like demands, Ms Carey has been through plenty throughout her career.
However, most recently, Mariah – or Mimi, as close family call her – has been more vocal about the issue of identity. Seemingly easy to talk to, vocal powerhouse Mariah Carey talked race, rumours and record sales…
“I think the main problem we’ve got now is this music downloading situation. A lot of people will ask me if I expect this album to sell like Music Box and I’m like, ‘Er… no.’ The record industry is a little different now! People don’t sell 35 million records on one record anymore.”
HUMAN
Deciding to incorporate the name Mimi – one of her many nicknames – into the album title, was Carey’s way of showing a more human side.
“The people who call me that mainly are my little brother and my nephews, so it’s a very personal name. I have a lot of nicknames because nobody who really knows me calls me Mariah. I thought it would be cool to incorporate that nickname into the title. This album is really showing a different side of my spirit. That’s why it’s ‘the emancipation’”.
Of course, the side we have seen of Ms Carey is that demanding side… or have we? The media often paints her as a difficult diva who arrives to events late and makes ridiculous demands of the hotels or venues in which she attends. Carey claims that the way in which she’s portrayed is one big exaggeration and thinks that the term ‘diva’ is...
“...so over-used! But honestly, at this point, I totally don’t care. Most recently, the media made this thing about this red carpet moment. Do you really think I knew if I was walking across carpet, concrete or whatever at four o’ clock in the morning after a flight from Germany? I have no idea what people do before I get to the hotel. I just wanna get upstairs, put on my boxer shorts and watch a DVD! I’ve been on TV shows and heard artists talking about how they love vacuuming and I’m like, shut up! Stop trying to pretend!”
SCRUTINY
That shrug-it-off mentality is certainly necessary when dealing with the level of scrutiny that Carey faces. The product of an Irish-American mother and a half-black, half-Venezuelan father, Carey explains that her mixed race made it difficult for her to be categorised as an artist. White people seemed to love her while in her power-ballad mode, but couldn’t understand why she opted to work with black artists. And black people accused her of teaming up with the likes of late rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard – “I’m so happy that I had the moments I had with him,” she says – and jumping on the black bandwagon to gain credibility. What does Carey make of it all?
“I think those kind of remarks have come from people who don’t listen to R’n’B and hip-hop stations and who don’t realise that Vision of Love (Carey’s first single) was a No.1 R’n’B record before it was a No.1 pop record. A lot of black people thought I was a black girl passing for a white and to most white people it was like, why is she making music with black artists? I’m just being myself. I’m not a one-dimensional artist.”
Interestingly, Carey is using her experiences as a bi-racial woman to write a children’s book that will be mainly geared for bi-racial kids.
“A girl came to me with the concept and she was going to call the book ‘Little Mariah’. She’s also bi-racial and she went through some of the same stuff that I went through growing up. I loved the concept but I said, ‘Let’s not call it ‘Little Mariah’’ because I thought it should be made accessible to everybody. So that’s one of the things I’m working on now.”

The critics have spoken: Mariah delivers her most powerful CD to date
Now it’s up to the public to decide. We’ve been telling you for months that Mariah Carey’s new CD, The Emancipation Of Mimi, was filled with many potential multi-format hits. Now that the finished product is in stores it’ll be interesting to see what two hit singles, “It’s Like That” and “We Belong Together,” and a mega-multi-media blitz can do in terms of CD sales for MC. You can’t help but notice a different confidence within one of Pop music’s most successful divas. Her signature vocal is held in check as Mariah sings in her best tone to date minus the vocal aerobics that put her on the map in 1990. Her emotion and passion is heartfelt and should connect with old and new Mariah fans from coast to coast. The CD is loaded from top to bottom. The list of singles seems endless including the much anticipated “Say Somethin’” featuring Snoop Dogg, to “Shake It Off” and “Get Your Number” with Jermaine Dupri. But the one track that features MC’s best performance just might be “Mine Again.” This CD has something for everyone, but it’s still focused under IDJMG head L.A. Reid. It also doesn’t hurt to have manager Benny Medina in your corner. No one would have believed that Mariah Carey could come full circle… except Mariah!

Mariah Carey is Officially Back
Mariah Carey's career has declined since 2001 when her movie Glitter, and the soundtrack for it, bombed. Nobody saw it, nobody bought it, and reviews for both were awful.
Virgin paid her over $20 million to leave the label. Read that again. They PAID her $20 million NOT to record anymore for them.
She signed with Universal and her last album reached platinum status, decent but lower than what should be expected for a proven superstar.
But her latest album, The Emancipation of Mimi, released Tuesday, will bring Carey back into that superstar status that she has longed for since the '90s.
According to HITS, a music tracking service, Carey is on pace to debut at number one next week, ending 50 Cent's 6-week reign atop the Billboard chart.
She is on pace to sell over 300,000 copies, surpassing the amount her last album in 2002 sold in its first week.

The following is in French as it's regarding a very bad review of the album by a Belgian magazine.  Kinou talked with the critic on the phone and he explained that in his opinion, Mariah with her talent could have done a more creative work and less "commercial", they talked a long moment, exchanging ideas and apparently they didn't fight (which was very difficult for Kinou ).

Carey chases role in Extras
Superstar singer Mariah Carey is begging British comedian Ricky Gervais for a cameo role in his new show Extras.
The curvy Butterfly singer "laughed herself hoarse at THE OFFICE", Gervais' GOLDEN GLOBE-winning TV show, and has approached BBC producers to talk about the possibility of taking a role in the star-studded new series.
A BBC source says, "We thought it was a wind-up when we got a call and were told Mariah wanted to speak to us.
"We were filming that day, but plan to hook up with her later in the series if she is in town."
The stellar cast of Extras already includes Kate Winslet and Samuel L Jackson.

Mariah Carey Emancipates Bed Stuy
Mariah Carey promoted her new recording, The Emancipation of Mimi, by performing for early-morning Times Square crowds on Good Morning America. After finishing her set of five songs - three live for today’s GMA, and two others taped for future airing – Mariah thanked the audience for coming, and reminded fans to stop by her in-store appearance this evening. “Come see us tonight. We’ll be at Bed Stuy and Broadway”, she told the crowd. There was some offstage gesticulating and shouting, and then Mariah corrected herself. “Best Buy! Best Buy on Broadway”.

Jasmine's Juice
By Jasmine Dotiwala
“Mariah’s cake had a life-size Mariah on top”

Sleep isn’t abundant in my life when my pal Mariah hits London. Firstly, at West London’s Baglioni Hotel – one of my favourite London haunts – we had girly nights in trying on dresses, dinners out on the town, and a surprise pyjama party where we flew in three of her closest pals from NYC.
We never had a bleak moment – it was all “opulent, decadent and stellar!” Then, the coolest white man to sing, George Michael, invited me and Mariah out to join him and his boyfriend Kenny Goss for dinner at the world famous and ridiculously expensive Cipriani restaurant on Friday night after Mariah had filmed Top of the Pops. George ‘I’m from Watford’ Michael was the most entertaining, fabulous host – and had us mesmerised with his stories and charm. He and Mariah shared tales of fellow peers in music, former record labels and their ethnic backgrounds and their scarred childhoods because of race hate – but it was the nicest dinner party ever and George was nothing like the quiet, strange recluse Elton John has made him out to be. He was lovely!
Saturday night in London was the launch of Mariah’s new album The Emancipation of Mimi. The venue Tantra was not our favourite but it was what it was, so we played along with it. When I arrived with MC, there was a media frenzy outside – but once you squeezed inside, the crowd was jamming to every hot new track. DJs Manny Norte, Dodge and Shortee Blitz threw down. It was a heaving, sweaty shakedown! In the house were Mariah’s uber-fabulous new manager Benny Medina (when he wants to speak to me and we’re in the same building, he gets one of his assistants in LA to call me from across the Atlantic to hook us up!.....Fabulous!).
When we arrived at the party, Mariah had intended to speak to her guests on the microphone but it didn’t work in the VIP so we nixed that idea. Then, as it was her born day, the club surprised her with a cake which would’ve been a nice thought if it were not for the attempt to put a life-size Mariah on top which looked nothing like her but more like Medusa: they’d attempted to emulate her hair flying in the wind... and they’d paid £3000 for the cake from Harrods.
I’d be straight up in Mr Al-Fayed’s face demanding a refund! Then we had giant champagne bottles spitting with fireworks before we hit the hotel for a more intimate party which continued till 10.30am the following day!
Also livin’ it up in the party were the very merry designer Wale Adyemi (who sent me a huge bag of clothes I wore in a shoot with Mariah for The Independent the day before!), rapper Est’elle, Alesha formally of Mis-teeq (who came with her future mum-in-law, Harvey from So Solid’s mum Jennifer who told me she loved reading Jasmine’s Juice every week!), singer Mario, Adidas’ PR queen Paola Lucktang, Elle magazine’s Donna Wallace (who sent me a beautiful dress to wear on the night), Wayne Williams, BMG’s Jennifer Mills, Choice FM’s George Kay, actresses Caroline Chikezee (who signed her contract with Benny Medina on the night!) and Naomie Harris. Also in the place were Blue’s Simon Webbe and Lee Ryan (Lee had joined me and Mariah at the hotel the night before, sung to her and asked her for vocal advice – cringe!), Ruff Ryders rapper Jin, African couture designer Beth Tesh-O-Me, The Honeyz and many more… The next few days the tabloids ran the usual diva stories about Mariah which had us rolling in laughter! Where do they get their crap from? Red carpets, rose petals strewn in her path? Tell that to the fans that she invited into her hotel to hang out with her!

Mariah Carey Rocks Times Square in Live Concert Event for GMA!

Pop star Mariah Carey is back with a new album, The Emancipation of Mimi," and she and her band took over Times Square this morning in a live concert sponsored by "Good Morning America."
The Emancipation of Mimi hits stores today. Critics are calling it Carey's most powerful album in years, and Carey (who is known to family and close friends as "Mimi") is calling it her most personal.
Carey performed three new songs for a throng of excited fans, some of whom began camping out in Times Square the night before in order to get close to the stage.
Wearing a glittery, body-hugging gown and joined by a posse of back-up singers and dancers, Carey performed the Top 10 dance hit It's Like That, followed by the ballad We Belong Together and then pulled out the gospel-inflected classic Make It Happen.
Mariah Carey emerged in the early 1990s with her astounding vocal range and became known as "the voice." She went on to become the most prolific-selling female artist of the '90s.
Her self-titled debut album earned her two Grammys. She then went on to sell over 150 million albums, topping the charts with 15 No. 1 songs. Her singles spent more weeks at No. 1 than any other female artist in history.
Joe Levy, an editor at Rolling Stone magazine, said Carey ushered in a new era for female performers.
"Frankly, Mariah is someone who brought a lot of street, hip-hop energy into the pop charts and into this pop-R&B world," Levy said. "That was a Mariah innovation in the '90s. You had this squeaky clean girl diva who was having the Ol' Dirty Bastard rhyme on her records. And you were just kinda like, 'Huh? Really? Wow!' And then, you know, it just became de rigueur."
Now at 35 years old, Carey says she's in a much better place — spiritual, confident and optimistic and says the new album reflects that.
"It's just being closer to myself, just closer to my spirit," Carey said on "Good Morning America."
"Getting a chance to get it together in terms of being on tour, being with the fans, you know what I mean, and then taking the time to make an album that I really feel proud of."
While much has changed in Carey's life, both critics and fans say at least one thing has remained the same.
"This woman can sing," Levy said. "And frankly, that's what Mariah is known for. Really being able to sing."

Good Morning America Mariah special
I watched webcams filming Times Square to try to see Mariah, but,, nothing .  Mariah was not on Times Square .
I didn't dream, all the commercials and articles said that Times Square would be closed for this event, but no, I saw a few cars, some people walking, a guy cleaning the street, some pigeons, but, no Mariah .
I watched these webcams for an hour for nothing .  Ok, it's nice to see a pigeon, a guy cleaning the street, but I would have preffered to see Mariah .  So, I'll wait to post something until we have a review.

All HipHop rumors
On Eminem’s Shade 45, some of the DJ’s are reporting that Mariah Carey goes topless in the new “State Property 2” movie. As much as I would love to promote this movie in that way, I’m sorry to say it’s not true. This movie is pretty humorous and features just about everybody in rap. Beanie and Mariah have new, banging albums out as well. I can tell you they both have soul!

Mariah Carey: 'I feel like that's over'
Singer reclaiming image on 'Emancipation of Mimi'
Old habits die hard, and so it is that Mariah Carey finds herself at a downtown recording studio well past midnight, rehearsing with her band for shows promoting the release of her new album, "The Emancipation of Mimi."

Carey's well-known workaholism hasn't changed. But what has, she says, is her approach to her work: It's no longer all-consuming, the most important thing in her life -- and it no longer defines who she is.

"I'm kind of at the point where as long as I can make music, I'm not absorbed by it," says Carey, kicking off her stiletto heels and stretching out on a black leather couch before her late-night session begins.

"There's a way bigger world, and a way bigger picture than just living for that, and getting knots in your stomach every time you're worried about what's your chart position," she adds. "It's not that deep. I know who I am as a person, I know who I am as an artist, and I know who my fans are."

Reclaiming Mariah the person is the whole basis of the album as Carey seeks to redefine her image, which has yet to fully recover from the kind of fall from grace that seems to inevitably bewitch most pop superstars.

In 2001, she was at her peak, signing a reported $80 million deal with Virgin Records after a chart-busting run at Sony, which was then headed by her former husband and mentor, Tommy Mottola.

Later that year, however, she was hospitalized twice for physical and emotional breakdowns close to the release of her movie debut, the much-derided "Glitter." That led to her being painted as an unstable diva, and Virgin bought out her contract for nearly $30 million.

Another poor-selling album, 2002's "Charmbracelet" (on a new label, Island Def Jam), added to her commercial malaise. Many questioned whether she could return to the breathtaking success that defined most of her 15-year career -- when every album was a multi-platinum success and No. 1 singles flowed as smoothly as her multi-octave voice.

'It was so over-dramatized'
Carey, 35, calls the hoopla over her troubles overblown, and remains frustrated that it's still a topic of discussion.

"I feel like that's over and anybody that deals with that is kind of like living in four-years-ago land," she says, calling it a "blip of my moment in my career, which has spanned almost half of my life."

Carey doesn't avoid talking about that "blip" -- she's candid when discussing the troubled times. But she clearly doesn't like revisiting it, and regrets her label's insistence that she do so on "Charmbracelet" with the album's first single, "Through the Rain."
"Everybody wanted me to be like, 'Let's have that moment, let's sit and cry with Oprah, let's just have tearful moments of like, "I've overcome this." ' (But) I think I was still overcoming it," she says, noting her father had died of cancer a month before that album's release.

"It was like, I don't wanna go through this again. This was so sensationalized and it was so over-dramatized, the whole breakdown moment, which was like literally something that lasted like a two-day moment."

Perhaps more damaging to her psyche was her five-year marriage to Mottola, eighteen years her senior. He signed her when she was just a teen to Columbia Records and shaped her blockbuster career in its early years. They divorced in 1998; she describes it as an "abusive relationship."

After she wriggled out of the marriage, she reveled in her freedom, which explains her move toward hip-hop and revealing outfits.

"I think everybody was shocked," she says. "I don't think anything I've ever done has ever been in poor taste, or too sexual ... (but) I did push the envelope for me, a little bit out of rebelliousness. Like, I could do whatever I want. For years, I wasn't allowed to wear anything but a turtleneck and a full-length coat and a boot. After a while, it's like, I can have fun, and be sexy in a video too?"

While she's still looking quite sexy -- she arrives for the rehearsal in a tight tank top, tight jeans, her long blond locks in perfect place -- she's no longer dressing to out-Britney Britney Spears.

"Yes, there has like an image change. A slight image change, because it's still me," she says. "I didn't come out with like, auburn hair and a turtleneck up to here," she says, gesturing to her neck.

'She knew what kind of record she wanted'
And while she still coos with rappers and can sing circles around the competition, she's more into soulful nuances than the high-pitched vocal gymnastics that have defined some of her other songs.

"I think for the last couple of times, the direction of her records have been decided by somebody else, so when she comes to the studio in the past, she comes with a lot of different ideas," says producer Jermaine Dupri, a longtime collaborator and friend (Carey, as always, co-wrote and produced most of the new album).

This time, Dupri says, "she knew what kind of record she wanted -- a feel-good record."

Still, she's hardly guaranteed of the No. 1 spot anymore on the charts, especially since newer divas -- Alicia Keys and Beyonce among them -- have ruled in her absence.

But Island Def Jam Chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid, who arrived at the label after "Charmbracelet" was released, says Carey need not worry.

"There's only a few people who sing. She's one of the few singers and very few really great singers ... and the beauty of Mariah is if you really take a snapshot of her career, she's always had the support of the youth."

So far, the buzz on the record has been positive. "If this record gets her back on track, I think people are going to be raving about her musically again," says Rick Krim, executive vice president of music talent at VH1, where her video has been strongly received.

Carey, though, professes not to care -- she's more interested in the true emancipation of Mimi (her nickname) from the pressures of fame.

As she sits on the couch, she notes that the interview is taking place in the very room where she got her big break -- auditioning to be a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr, a room that Carey had not entered in years. That teenage girl is who Carey identifies with -- and she wants to keep some of that inside her.

"I feel like the journey that I've gone on was a blessing, because it brought me back closer to the person that I was first stepped into this room," she says. "I was a scared kid who just loved music and wanted to sing and had the desire to sing."

"So, no, I don't feel like I have to prove anything on this record. I'm just thankful for the record. I'm in a really good place right now in my life, and I'm grateful to God for everything that I have."

Mariah Careys On
Tomorrow, Mariah Carey performs live in Times Square for a morning news show. The occasion is the release of her new album, "The Emancipation of Mimi."
Remember, I told you several weeks ago that this album would be a hit, and Mariah would be back — if not on top, then close to it.
The truth is that Mariah's going to have more than a couple of hit singles from this album, including "It's Like That," "We Belong Together" and "Say Something," which features Snoop Dogg.
So while we'll be on top of all the fun gossipy stuff, the truth is: Mariah's going to outdo Jennifer Lopez this time around. That's sweet vindication.

Mariah embraces diva soul
Mariah Carey is calling her 10th studio CD "The Emancipation of Mimi." It's the sort of bold title that promises big changes, exciting sounds, a fresh outlook. Both the word "emancipation" and the sobriquet "Mimi" (a nickname used by friends and family) imply that Carey's latest will be soaringly free and intensely personal.
Could those words also signal that this is the disc on which Carey throws caution to the wind and explores alien genres? Is this where her previously unsuspected love for artists like, say, Jimi Hendrix, the Smiths or Pere Ubu finally rears its head?
Of course not. (Ah, but it's fun to dream, isn't it?) Our girl is attempting to extricate herself from the prolonged career slump that began with the abysmal failure of the "Glitter" soundtrack in 2001 and continued through 2002's "Charmbracelet," and neither she nor her handlers are likely to take any crazy chances. (She's probably never heard of Pere Ubu anyway.)
In fact, the superstar producers and guest artists on "Emancipation" (the Neptunes, Kanye West, Twista, Snoop Dogg, Nelly) are no less than the hottest -- and most overexposed -- names in urban music.
If such a stacking of the deck seems predictable, it gets the job done: Every song on "Emancipation" showcases Carey's undeniable vocal strengths. Heavy on ballads and midtempo love songs, it always keeps at least one foot (more often, both feet) planted firmly in comforting old-school diva soul. This is an R&B record for folks who think there hasn't been any good R&B since Minnie Riperton died.
Even the rappers are on their best behavior, with Snoop playing an amiable around-the-way lothario on ''Say Somethin''' and Twista motormouthing his way through ''One and Only'' (''Twista and Mariah/Together like a grip on a tire,'' he raps, and it must be admitted that Carey does a fair job of trying to keep up with him).
''It's Like That'' isn't the old Run-DMC song, but it's almost as cool, with Carey fantasizing about easing into a nightclub buzzed on Bacardi. ''No stress, no fights,'' she sings, making it sound like a trip to a vacation spa. ''To the Floor'' is another hooky dance-floor anthem that ought to get a party started (although it does sound like Nelly phoned his part in).
But the crux of the album is to be found in its heart-on-my-sleeve numbers. Perhaps the best of these is ''Fly Like a Bird,'' a veritable prayer that explicitly references God. ''Sometimes this life can be so cold/I pray you'll come and carry me home,'' Carey sings melismatically. ''Carry me higher, higher, higher.''
It's so moving that we'll resist the temptation to be crass and interpret the song as a plea for heightened record sales. Help from above is always welcome, but "Emancipation" sounds like it just might do fine all on its own.

Mariah Carey Wants To Be Recognized As A Songwriter And Producer, Too
Mariah Carey has written or co-written over 160 songs, including her hits "Vision of Love" and "Dreamlover," which is why she's annoyed when people are still surprised to learn she writes her own material. Mariah tells the New York Daily News, "I mean, I do play into the diva thing because it is fun to dress up, put on a gown, and sing a song. But if Elton John wanted to dress up he would still be recognized as the artist he is. When it comes to females, it's different. Unless you're sitting behind a guitar or a piano, people don't look at you as a producer, an artist, a writer."
Mariah's new album, the Emancipation Of Mimi, hits stores Tuesday (April 12). Mariah says her song lyrics reflect what she's going through at the moment. The new album contains the song "Fly Like a Bird," which features an appearance by her pastor, and talks about how her faith has steered her through rough times. She says, "If I didn't have the ability to say, 'OK, God, get me through this,' I wouldn't have gotten through it--the rumors, the speculation, the criticism and ups and downs, whether I am battling a record company, an ex-husband, this, that and the third! I'm not trying to get on a soap box and preach. It's just important for people to know where I am coming from."

Mariah Carey Free at last?
by Jennifer Vineyard, with additional reporting by John Norris and Jasmine Dotiwala
Mariah Carey is used to being asked lots of questions — about her striptease on "TRL," her 2001 hospitalization for "exhaustion," her less-is-more approach to clothing, not to mention her divorce from one of music's biggest moguls.

But the woman with pop music's biggest voice is raising questions on her forthcoming album, The Emancipation of Mimi, which comes out April 12. Like: Who exactly is this Mimi character? Why does she need to be emancipated, and from what? And — most significantly — can this album help her stage a post-breakdown, post-Glitter, comeback? The way her last album, Charmbracelet, was supposed to, but didn't?

Actually, Carey is wondering about a lot of these things herself. She stops this interview to get a status check, to see if someone will tell her, considering everything, if she's doing OK. "After all these years of interviewing different celebrities, and seeing people at different stages of their careers, do you see the ones that, really, fame kind of screws with them?" she asks. "Am I one of the better people?"

After being assured that she is, Mariah goes on to say that she's more comfortable now about her opinions and her talent. Because, of course, she is Mimi: It was a childhood nickname that she now employs to put some distance between Mariah the person and Mariah the celebrity. And she says she does feel emancipated, finally shaking free the shackles that made her the songbird in ex-husband Tommy Mottola's gilded cage for so long. "I wasn't allowed to say much 10 years ago," she says. "I was like, 'Yes, new album, singing, thank you.' "

A lot has happened since she walked down the aisle with Mottola in 1993 — after dating him while he was still married to his wife of 20 years — and signing to his record label when he was the CEO of Sony Entertainment. Her years with Mottola made her career — transforming her from an obscure backup singer into a superstar, starting with her "Vision of Love" single in 1990 — but she says his controlling "guidance" became damaging to her psyche. She even jokingly referred to their mansion in Bedford, New York, as "Sing Sing" — not only in reference to the prison, but because that was all she was supposed to do.

It's been eight years since they split up, and Carey says it's taken her that long to come into her own. Thus, she's able to don her wedding gown for the video for her next single, "We Belong Together" — a sequel of sorts to current clip "It's Like That," in which, interestingly, a wealthy older man, played by Eric Roberts, spies on her every move. She says the old $25,000 gown has no sentimental value for her anymore.

"Did I want to go buy an off-the-rack wedding dress [for the video] when I have a freaking Vera Wang with a 20-foot train sitting in storage?" Carey asks. "Why not? I mean, come on — the dress is the least abusive part of the whole thing. If I had worn the dress every day of my life in that relationship, it would have been burned in the incinerator long ago. But the dress was worn for a moment. And that moment was not an unhappy experience. It was the rest of the relationship that was the problem."

Despite the split, Carey stayed on Mottola's label until 2000 — which she admits might have been a mistake. She doesn't blame her ex-husband outright for the fact that "I'm Real" by Jennifer Lopez — another singer Mottola played Svengali to — ended up sounding an awful lot like two songs destined for Glitter ("Loverboy" and "If We"), instead referring to any resemblance between the songs as "tomfoolery." And as for any bad feelings between her and Lopez, Carey says, "I don't even know her. We kind of just said hello once or twice."

During an interview at New York's Hot 97 in early March, Funkmaster Flex asked Carey about the rumors that her manager, Benny Medina — who formerly managed Lopez — was about to take J. Lo on as a client again. Flex implied a conspiracy. "This isn't the first time that someone else has been in both camps," he said. "I heard one time, there was a producer [either Mottola, or possibly Irv Gotti] that's in her camp right now, but was heavily hanging out in your sessions."

"It was more like heavily hanging out in my life," she said.

"I heard a song once got stolen," he said.

"Once?" she retorted.

"I had to make that label change," she says now. "The fighting I had to do, the constant battle with Sony, that whole thing, that put me in a different place — even emotionally. I was constantly on guard, as opposed to being really more true to who I am. You can fight against people, and fight to the death, but I can't control the world."

Emancipation marks the first time Carey feels free to say what she wants, to sing the way she wants, even to dress the way she wants. Even though 2002's Charmbracelet was supposed to be the album that freed her from the bad vibes of her disastrous 2001 album/film Glitter and her subsequent much-publicized meltdown, she still felt a need to conform to what she thought the public and her advisors wanted from her.

"Everybody was like, 'She needs to do those middle-of-the-road ballads, she needs to get back to that,' " she says. So she did, and the resulting album wound up selling more than a million copies in the U.S. alone. An impressive number to be sure, but not when compared with her multiplatinum past sales history — and the album failed to counterbalance the bad press from what she calls the "supposed breakdown."

At that point, she says, "I really started second-guessing myself. And then I realized, like, all right, I have to go with my gut. Because everybody's got an opinion, and so many people's opinions about me are like polar opposites. They're like, 'We love it when she does ballads, make her do the ballads.' Then they're like, 'We want to hear a hip-hop record.' 'Why is she dressing like this? She should show less skin.' 'She should show more.' You know what I mean? I'm like, 'Stay in your lane, and I'll figure it out.' "

She says she faced similar problems in the wake of her meltdown. "Every interview became a '20/20' moment. Everybody was like, 'Be vulnerable,' you know? And it's like, can I just be me? Because honestly, this whole thing" — the breakdown — "was blown out of proportion, and I just would love to not even talk about it. But that wasn't possible."

So, she reverted to an earlier version of herself, one who wasn't concerned about the public or its expectations. On Emancipation, she says, "I felt I did the album I wanted to do." She moves beyond her recent save-the-pipes moves of cooing or breathing songs, and really sings. There are collaborations with Snoop Dogg ("Say Somethin' "), Jermaine Dupri ("Get Your Number"), Twista (the call-and-response "One and Only") and Nelly ("To the Floor"). There are innocent love songs and spiritual ballads ("We Belong Together," "Fly Like a Bird"). There are party songs ("It's Like That"), let's-get-busy songs ("Get Your Number," "Stay the Night"), send-off songs ("Shake it Off"), and songs of lost love, too ("Circles"). Being emancipated means you can go anywhere you want.

The album, she says, "is not about making the older executives happy by making a bring-down-the-house, tearjerker ballad, or [something] steeped in the media dramas of my life. What I tried to do was keep the sessions very sparse, underproduced, like in '70s soul music, when all the musicians were in there at once, feeding off each other — me showing them vocally where I'm going and giving them the vibe in which to take it all musically.

"When [new Island/Def Jam label chief] L.A. Reid heard that people call me Mimi," she continues, "he said, 'I feel your spirit on this record. You should use that name in the title, because that's the fun side of you that people don't get to see — the side that can laugh at the diva jokes, laugh at the breakdown jokes, laugh at whatever they want to say about you and just live life and enjoy it.'

"So I'm kind of just living in this moment right now, and just enjoying it. It's a happy space that I'm in."

Besides, she adds, "To say 'The Emancipation of Mariah Carey' would've been so obnoxious."

Mariah Carey Says Some Songs on Her New Album Represent 'A Totally Different Approach for Me Musically'Regarding Recurring Theme of Cheating Men, Says: 'I Think There's a Lot of Optimism on the Record  - But There's a Lot of Cheaters, Too'
In the Newsweek feature "Review and Rebuttal," Mariah Carey discusses her eighth album, "The Emancipation of Mimi," with Senior Writer Lorraine Ali. "I've never felt so free making a record, though I was worried about even putting the lyric 'This is Mimi's emancipation' in there," Carey tells Ali. "I was worried that it was too corny. Now it's the album title."
In her dialogue with Ali, the 35-year-old Carey (whose nickname is Mimi) addresses one of her new album's recurring themes: cheating men. "I don't want to sound sexist -- in print, at least -- but honestly, you know how it is when you talk to girlfriends. Everybody has a story that's really depressing. It's not like I set out to make it that way. I think there's a lot of optimism on the record-but there's a lot of cheaters too."
In the interview, which appears in the April 18 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, April 11), Ali asks Carey about the song "One and Only," in which rap star Twista plays the role of a cheating man and Carey is the girl who'll be around no matter how badly he mistreats her. "When I wrote the song it was like you said -- it was one of those you'll-never-trust-a-man-again. That was the initial vibe...I didn't meant to suggest I'm following Twista all around like a sick puppy." Snoop Dogg and Nelly also contribute to the album.
In discussing the ballad "Fly Like a Bird," Carey says: "Usually, I'll have an introspective bleak-outlook-on-life song. In the past it's been 'Petals' or 'Close My Eyes.' Those were the ones that the hard-core fans related to most. But this ['Fly Like a Bird'] has a hopefulness to it. That's why it's one of my favorites, too."
Ali calls the ballad "I Wish You Knew" -- with its fake audience in the background -- melodramatic and cheesy. Carey responds: "I know, but that was the point -- to make it really retro and funny, and I even talk to the audience. We just got carried away...There are people who like this kind of thing -- something to sing at the karaoke bar on that one night a week they get out and wear that special dress."

Carey sad over Wisegirls flop
Superstar Mariah Carey is still proud of her 2002 flop movie Wisegirls, despite the crime caper going straight to DVD.
The Fantasy hitmaker's second film was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival, but following Carey's disastrous reviews for her debut movie Glitter, Wisegirls never hit the big screen.
Carey says the film got such a good reception, even Sean Penn praised her performance.
She tells the New York Post, "That made me see how good an experience movies can be. When we showed it at Sundance, we got a standing ovation. Too bad nobody remembers the good movie, they just remember the great debacle.
"Sean Penn came up to me at a party after Sundance and told me he saw and enjoyed Wisegirls, and not to give up just because of one bad movie.
"I was thrilled. You can't get better praise and advice in the movie business."

Carey worries about how fame will affect offspring
Mariah Carey is reluctant to become a mother because she's worried her children will suffer the same bad media treatment she's received.
The Charmbracelet singer, 35, is prepared to wait until her career in the public spotlight dwindles before she starts a family, so her kids won't be forced to be part of her celebrity lifestyle.
Carey, 35, says, "But for me, it's a very big commitment to have a child. Even just as a famous person, to bring a child into the world, you have to think about how to explain it to them, because they're not choosing to come into the life of a celebrity, they're going to be born into it.
"I'd want them to live freely and not be victimised by any kind of weird pressures or things that we as celebrities deal with.
"I don't complain about it because it's what I chose."

For non Belgian fans, it's difficult to follow our strange charts, I know we are weird over here .  It would be too easy to make one national chart .  We have the Ultratip which are tracks with a great potential,  Ultratop which are the sales (but they are separate in 2 parts of the country and nobody knows exactly where go the Brussels and area sales ) like it was not complicated enough, the Ultratop for the Dutch speaking part is a top 50 singles and the Ultratop for the French speaking part is a top 40 singles.  It's a complete and total mess .

Mariah: 'I am not a diva'
Mariah Carey has insisted that her diva reputation is undeserved.
Referring to her reported insistence that a red carpet with white candles be laid outside London's Baglioni Hotel before she could enter last month, she said: "Who even knew three-foot candles existed? Did you? I wouldn't have noticed if it was a purple carpet with polka dots on it. I'd just got off a plane and it was three in the morning. Trust me, my only thought was, 'Where's the bed?.'
"I love finding out my latest quirks. If I get mad about it, they're just going to write more. Then it'll be 'Mariah Has Tantrum on News At Ten.' Sometimes, I just don't know what people are talking about."
Despite not being a diva, Mariah has reportedly taken offence at British lifts because they are "so much smaller" than her favoured American elevators.
She told The Big Issue how she has developed a disliking for the contraptions after being stuck in them on a number of occasions around the world.
She explained: "I really, really hate elevators."
"But I go in them when I have to. In Britain, the elevators seem to be much smaller than in America, so it gets me feeling even more uneasy.
"All the time I'm saying 'can't we just take the stairs?' I'm always about stairs unless it's 20 flights. I even use stairs when I'm in my heels."

Mariah: Free at Last
by Lawrence Ferber
What makes a superb crossover pop/ dance/r&b/hip-hop album? An artist with one-of-a-kind personality, phenomenal vocals, excellent production, talented guest contributors, and that sparkly quality the hip-hop kids ( and now the Oxford English Dictionary! ) call “bling-bling.”
“I would say there definitely is ‘bling’ in the album,” admits Mariah Carey, amused. She’s discussing her latest and possibly greatest album, The Emancipation of Mimi ( Island Def Jam ) . With production/vocal contributions from Jermaine Dupri, The Neptunes, Kanye West, Twista, Snoop Dogg and Nelly, and Carey’s unmistakable voice arranged and textured in fresh new ways, the album represents a superb 21st century reinvention of the seven-octave performer. And yeah, it’s just bursting with jewelry-like bling-bling. “I like bling,” Carey laughs. “It’s got a certain quality that when you put it on it lights up the moment.”

Carey has plenty of work to do today, yet the earthy and forthcoming diva happily made time for a “gay” interview. “There was a time when all I was allowed to do was go to gay clubs,” she recalls, “because my quote-unquote husband was so afraid of me being around straight people.” But back to The Emancipation of Mimi. A year and a half in the making, the album’s catchy, Jermaine Dupri-produced first single, “It’s Like That,” is already burning up the charts and dance floors. David Morales has performed his club magic on the track and an upcoming nine-minute remix of “Say Somethin’.” Other upbeat album standouts include “Shake It Off,” the playfully ’80s-ish pickup ditty “Get Your Number,” and smooth super-blingy “To The Floor.”

“This is very much like a party record,” Carey says. “Since the time I was in junior high the process of putting on makeup and getting ready to go out ... those are the moments you want to put on a record and get excited [ about ] whatever it is you’re gonna do. I wanted to make a record that was reflective of that.”

Yet The Emancipation of Mimi is balanced out by a generous handful of ballads and downtempo numbers, many of which deal with heartbreak, bad relationships, and cheating lovers. “In some ways I feel the songs flow together really well,” Carey insists. “Like you’re going out, you’re coming down from going out and then another song picks you back up.”

As on all of her previous albums, Carey co-wrote every song on Emancipation. So where did all those breakup songs come from? “Past experiences darling,” she laughs. “You try to take those moments and channel them into something because if not you just become bitter!”

“Shake It Off” takes a playful approach to bitterness—and, more specifically, a cheatin’ bad apple—with lyrics like “I gotta shake you off/ just like a Calgon commercial.” “That’s probably one of my favorite songs on the album,” she admits. “Shake it off can apply to anything. Whatever personal dramas we go through, put that song on and you lose the anxiety or intensity of the moment. I’ll listen to that song when I’ve just come out of an annoying meeting. I gotta shake this off.”

The Emancipation of Mimi isn’t a concept album per se, but it definitely sees Carey, whose closest friends and family call her Mimi, shaking off what audiences have come to expect. “It’s more the record I always wanted to make type of a thing,” she notes. “Everyone expects [ an album title ] like Rainbow or Butterfly, from me. So I thought The Emancipation of Mimi was cool—that Mimi side of me coming out as opposed to the ‘Mariah Carey’ celebrity or stigma or whatever preconceived notions people have of me as that person. This time I really experimented and played with how [ my vocals ] sounded as a whole.”

That said, longtime fans will find plenty of her vocal/lyrical signatures and “drama” on tracks like “Mine Again,” “Joy Ride” and “I Wish You Knew.”

A Long Island, New York native, Carey’s life in music started the moment she was born: her mother named her after a song, “They Call The Wind Mariah.” Mom also helped instill a sense of open-mindedness and acceptance in Carey, which surely helped lead to her garnering legions of gay fans and friends. “I’ve always tried not to judge people,” she explains. “My mom being an opera diva, artsy love everybody kind of rebellious girl from the Midwest who married a Black man and who had predominantly gay friends. Nothing ever seemed like it was wrong or strange to me. It was a loving type of vibe I got. I basically was raised by two gay men, Ernie and Mort, who were best friends. When we didn’t have a place to stay we stayed with them. So I feel like God recognizes us all as human beings and loves us as we are.”

Carey began singing by age four, wrote songs by middle school, and moved to NYC after high school to pursue a musical career. She admits that love—and sex—took a backseat during much of her youth. “I’m kind of a prude, especially with straight guys because they can be dogs,” she admits. “My sister had a baby when she was 15—I’m thankful she did because her son is an amazing person, but I looked at what was going on with that and I made a conscious effort to focus on my career. And people would make fun of me because I was this virginal girl who walked around in tight dresses. They were like what is this dichotomy going on here? So [ in terms of sexual experimentation ] I haven’t really been the most exploratory gal in the land. I know that’s boring for the readers!”

Her self-titled 1990 debut launched Carey into the pop ( and drag queen lip synch repertory ) stratosphere with four No. 1 singles, including “Someday,” and two Grammy wins for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. More hits, awards and platinum discs followed over the years for Emotions ( 1991 ) , Music Box ( 1993 ) , Daydream ( 1995 ) , Butterfly ( 1997 ) and Rainbow ( 1999 ) . Yet in summer of 2001, Carey hit a spot of rough road with the critically mauled film Glitter and a series of personal/public breakdowns ( not to mention the death of her father and breakup with boyfriend Luis Miguel ) .

Carey looks back at that quintessentially “Behind The Music”-worthy period “as something that had to happen in my life,” she says. “The drama would not have been high enough without that. I really do feel a lot was made out of that time period, it was so blown out of proportion. That movie and that soundtrack—which I think had some really good songs that hopefully one day I’ll get to redo—the fact it came out on September 11th people need to remember. How can we expect anything from that? I was a scapegoat in a lot of ways for a lot of talk show hosts who wanted to get away from the real stuff going on in the world. We all have to go through our tests to see how strong we are and come out on the other side.”

She’s definitely on that other side now, and Carey says she owes this fact to God and spirituality. The final song on Emancipation, “Fly Like a Bird,” boasts dashes of gospel, soul, and plenty of calls/thanks to a higher power. Her pastor even makes an appearance on the track. “To me the most important thing is the message he says in the beginning of the song,” she notes. “‘Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.’ I felt like a lot of people may not hear that message and a lot of people need to. It wasn’t to be preachy. A lot of times people will hear songs that I write that are not the typical songs people look at as “Mariah Carey songs.” Like “Close my Eyes,” which only real fans would know but a lot of [ them ] relate to. It’s about having a difficult childhood and going through a lot of deep stuff. There’s a song called “Outside” that’s about being biracial. A lot of people relate to it because they felt like outsiders all their lives. There are a lot of songs I’ve put on albums as a [ personal ] release but I know it helps other people. To show that someone else has gone through what they’ve gone through.”

Marriage is one thing Carey doesn’t plan to go through again just yet. When asked about her feelings regarding the hot topic of gay marriage, Carey first responds by stating “I think it’s a huge political thing and I’m notoriously not political. If you asked me about any candidate I’m pretty much clueless. But I feel like everything in life is a personal choice.” Then, after a few minutes, she adds that “when you mention [ gay ] marriage, marriage in general, after going through the experience I went through I think my whole view on marriage is tainted no matter what kind of marriage we’re talking about. I feel like I went into my situation being married for the wrong reasons. I’ve been traumatized.”

Happily, gays—such as Heatherette designers Richie Rich and Traver Rains— have been and continue to be a positive presence in her life and career. “I don’t want to out anybody!” she laughs when asked for names of gays who have worked alongside her. “But I would venture to say yes! Definitely!” And Mariah does have an exciting series of projects ahead. She’s considering another foray into film acting ( her performance in the underrated Wisegirls, opposite Mira Sorvino, garnered attention from many movie producers ) , a possible remix EP, producing a track for 12-year-old vocalist Paul Robbins ( they appeared on Oprah ) , and “there’s possibly a Broadway Christmas show happening, based around my Christmas songs.” Bling-bling it on, Mariah!

Mariah: "Older housewives find my style too sexy"
Mariah Carey believes her sexy image is only offensive to "older housewives".
The Glitter star, who has been showing off her curves in revealing outfits for years, doesn't worry about the criticism she receives for her style, because she's been told exactly who is disgruntled.
She says, "A lot of men have told me that it's only women - like older housewives who can't do the same type of revealing thing I do - who have issues with me being too sexy.
"But I'm very much a girl's girl who likes froufrou things - if I've ever gone overboard, it's out of rebellion.
"I started out with this Mary Poppins image that nobody would allow me to even play with. When I finally had my moment in Butterfly, it was like, 'I'm gonna wear whatever I want, I don't care.'
"Sometimes because people look at you as a vocalist, they think you shouldn't have a body. Or show it if you do. But the women stars of all decades have... Barbra Steisand had an album cover where her butt was out!"

The album is out this week with the UK bonus single being 'Sprung'. Carey: "I'll only flirt with a man if I think he's gay"
Chart-topper MARIAH CAREY will only flirt with a man if she suspects he's gay.
The curvaceous singer, who claims to have had a very low number of sexual partners in her life, enjoys flirting - but only with men who will not try to take her home.
She says, "I'm a big flirt - even though the fame thing hinders my flirtability. Even if I'm flirting mildly, the guy takes it as, 'Oh, she likes me!'
"Then, because I don't go home with every Tom, Dick and Harry, I'll spend the entire night steering him away from that idea. So I can only do it with guys I think might be gay."
And even if Carey decides she'll get together with a man she has her eye on, she admits it's still not a straightforward experience.
She adds, "Usually I prefer to be friends with the person first. Most guys hate that too. Because the sly hustler guys don't want you to know what they're like, because then you won't want to be with them.
"See, they want to be with you, but then you might like the girl across the street, and the other girls walking by. That's especially true with famous men who can get whomever they want and whoever they're with will tolerate them cheating. I won't."

Berlin Rocks to the Sound Of Echoes
Anastacia and fellow pop diva Mariah Carey were among the 14 international and German acts performing during the nationally broadcasted ceremony.
Her award and live appearance also gave Anastacia the opportunity to dismiss claims made by a German rival that she and Carey hated each other and wanted promises their paths wouldn't cross in Berlin. "Mariah rocks -- get over it, people," Anastacia told the crowd after picking up her gong.

"WE GOT MC BACK INTO MuchMore Music's TOP 10'S.
Thank you everyone for the help and support on voting for "It's like that" in one of Canada's biggest music stations countdowns. It's a nightly Top 10 video show, and after ILT reached #3 it fell off completely. But now, due to the power
of voting we got her back. This is especially important because it doesn't look like she will be doing any promotion in Canada before the album comes out, the video is all we got. Thanks guys again, and please keep voting here:"

Carey Was Trained To Be Uptight
Mariah Carey blames her early showbiz training for turning her into an uptight and evasive interviewee who refused to give long answers.
When she first launched to fame, the Honey singer often frustrated journalists and TV chat show hosts by failing to talk candidly about her private life, preferring instead to reply in single lines.
However, Carey insists she's much more open and friendly in interviews now - because she's forgotten the bad lessons she was taught years ago and has learned to be herself.
She says, "For so long I'd sit there like I was being interviewed by (TV show) 20/20. Now I want to have fun 'cause that's my personality. When I started out I was trained to just sit there and give a one-line answer and move on. Don't trust anyone. So I was taught to be uptight."
"As a new artist you are told, 'Don't be seen carrying a bag from the store. Don't play with your hair as you answer.'"

Here's what I received from Desiree:
"After playing "We Belong Together" the DJ on 103.5 KTU Diane Prior commented that after Mariah visited the station recently everyone who worked there agreed that she was as beautiful on the inside as on the outside. I mention it because people always report on the nasty dj's comments. We should support the positive stations instead."
