It doesn't mean that she hasn't been trying. Since she married much younger actor Nick Cannon last spring, the speculation is that Mariah would soon be pregnant.

Last week, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres kept prodding her about it in an interview. She even tried to get her to drink Champagne. When Mariah only sipped it, Ellen declared, "You're pregnant!"

Well, there are plenty of other reasons not to drink on national television. But in this case, it wasn't pregnancy.

A friend of Mariah's laughed when I asked if the singing siren was knitting baby booties.

"She isn't," the friend replied, and added that there was no sign of the stork yet.

What Mariah may be expecting this week are Grammy nominations for her "E=MC²" album.

She's scheduled to be one of the hosts this Wednesday, Dec. 3, on the Grammy's prime time show on CBS. She, Taylor Swift and LL Cool J will announce nominees in six of the top categories.

Knowing the Grammys, they haven't asked Mariah to do it unless she's in good shape. "E=MC²" should pick up nods in Best R&B album, Best Pop album, and Best Female in both R&B and pop.

The scale-hopping diva, happily married to 27-year-old Nick Cannon, has experienced personal and professional triumphs and traumas since finding fame in 1990.

A so-called fairytale marriage to former Sony boss Tommy Mottola and subsequent divorce, troubled times with record labels, reports of a breakdown, forays into acting and her romance with toyboy Cannon would be enough to keep lyricists scribbling for months, and it would seem this is about to become a reality.

“A huge, huge Broadway producer is interested in Mariah’s story and it’s in discussions,” says a source close to the 
39-year-old star.

“Who would turn down an opportunity like that? Mariah has had a fascinating life.”

Hey, the Emmy-winning talk-show host had to ask about guest Mariah Carey's rumored expectant status. But while she pretended to let the pop diva off the hook Tuesday after receiving an elusive, "No, that's OK [to ask]," DeGeneres instead offered up a glass of champagne to ring in the nonnews.

"You don't have to answer that. Let's just toast with champagne," the chat maven benignly offered, after which Mimi became all flustered, first going the feigned shock route and then trying to insist that 3 p.m. was too early for her to start drinking.

"I can't believe you did this to me, Ellen," laughed the Grammy winner, who swapped vows with now 28-year-old Nick Cannon in April. "This is peer pressure!"

"No, let's toast to you not being pregnant," Ellen insisted.

"I can't believe her," Mariah said. "Why would we toast to that? How about to the future? For both of our futures, who knows what they hold."

She then only pretended to sip the bubbly. 

So on second thought..."You're pregnant," Ellen said.

But still Mariah resisted: "I didn’t say that. No, no, no. My mother would be at home like, on the computer like, What are you talking about? We will let you know when we’re going to have a family."

Well, maybe Mariah wasn't thirsty this afternoon, but who doesn't want to clink-and-drink with Ellen? Other than pregnant people, that is?

But after their first scene – in which he shoves her up against a wall and grabs her face – the actor was pleasantly surprised. 

"She pulled it off," Reddick, acclaimed for his acting chops on HBO's The Wire, tells PEOPLE. "She really took it seriously. She was committed to proving that she could do this."

In the movie due out in January, Carey plays a waitress named Krystal, who tries to escape her abusive husband, portrayed by Reddick, by going on a road trip with two brothers. 

Says the actor: "I saw all the subtlety in her work, and it's really beautiful." 

Adding that Carey is "very sweet" in person, Reddick says, "After this, I think she's going to have a film career, if she wants one. She is good."

The latest from the"Glitter" actress, "Tennessee," will open for a limited screening in December in Los Angeles. And the pop star will be getting an Oscar push from the film, but for what she does best: singing. 

For "Tennessee's" "Right to Dream," which Amazon.com is listing with a Dec. 2 release date, Carey got a little help from a surprising source. Rather than producer/regular collaborator Jermaine Dupri, Carey turned to country legend Willie Nelson.

"I was humming different melodies while I was on the set and stuff," Carey told Pop & Hiss. "I was just thinking that Willie Nelson would be somebody fabulous to collaborate with. I reached out to him and we met after one of his concerts, and he did some guitar for me.

"I went to his concert with my mom," Carey continued. "She’s a huge fan of his. We watched his show, and went back to the trailer afterward, and had a nice long talk about writing and the style of the record I was going for. It’s so heavily guitar-driven, and I was just thinking his sound would enhance the record."

The resulting song is one of the more low-key and elegant turns from the singer in recent memory. Dressed with delicate, finger-picked guitar embellishments, Carey's vocals are direct and sturdy, and go for determined optimism rather than late-night desperation.

The song, says Carey, is from the perspective of her "Tennessee" character Krystal, an aspiring singer. "The song has its own arc," Carey said. "She begins by telling us where she started, like she lays in bed and wonders where she left herself. A lot of people go through that sort of thing. It’s kind of about empowerment."

Directed by Aaron Woodley (2003's "Rhinoceros Eyes") and produced by Lee Daniels, whose company has produced such films as "Monster's Ball" and "Shadowboxer," "Tennessee" tells the story of two brothers who go off in search of their estranged father. Along the way they run into Carey's Krystal, who is fleeing an abusive husband.

Next year, Carey will have a role in another Lee Daniels production, "Push," an adaptation of Sapphire's novel of the same name. But Carey will have no music in that film:  "I just showed up as an actress," Carey said. 

Carey will appear at the Dec. 3 Grammy nomination prime-time special. She'll be performing a song from the Grammy Hall of Fame, but before Pop & Hiss could ask which tune, our time with the pop star  had expired.

According to a local television program, the woman had a debt of more than $1,500 related to deferred income. The lady of 67 years got in contact with the artist who decided to help her through her son who lives in Chicago. 

In addition to paying off the amount of debt, Carey also bought the modest, two bedroom home located in the neighborhood of San Miguel.

These are strange days for traditional music awards shows. The recording industry is still reeling, the concert-touring business is in retreat and television audiences have made it quite clear that their fascination lies with shows that create new celebrities, not the ones that honor existing stars.

“Idol" also has sapped the AMAs of one of their defining traits, their proudly populist heritage; when the AMAs started in 1974, it was the show where music-buying fans picked the winners, not some rarefied academy. But if you can't beat them, book them: The AMAs are dotted with past “Idol" contestants, with David Cook, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Chris Daughtry and David Archuleta all attending as nominees, presenters or both. 

This year the stars are rushing to the AMAs and making the most of their stage time, especially with the all-important holiday sales season ramping up. Not only is there a record number of performers, but the broadcast on ABC also will have a bit of a throwback approach by including medleys, that old variety show stand-by.

Al Schwartz, a consulting producer who has worked on the show since the Nixon administration.
"Well, it is a great year, but the stars are coming because they need it more than ever. Albums don't sell like they used to. And even with the stars we have a tough fight ahead of us: There's the premiere of '24' and there's football on."

The producer of the AMAs this year is Larry Klein, who worked his way up from a job being a runner on the set as a youngster and has a long resume. At rehearsals, amid the blaring music and work-crew hammering, he was in a constant state of motion.

"How can you have 19 performances in three hours? Ask me after I've done it."

Klein and company love the appeal of mixing and matching stars -- who wouldn't want to eavesdrop on the small talk, for instance, between Reba McEntire and Lil Wayne, who will be seated close to one another? They know that, in this iPod shuffle age, the main appeal of the awards show is putting on an unpredictable party.

Expect the cameras to linger, for instance, on the air-kisses sent back-and-forth between Aguilera and Carey, who will be sitting a few feet apart in the center of the front row. They had a nasty feud in 2006 that played out in the fascinating Kabuki of passive aggressive press-releases. "It is sad yet predictable that she would use my name to reinvent past incidents for her promotional gain," Carey said in one tender attack. "It is in my heart to forgive and I will keep her in my prayers."

Why would these stars subject themselves to this red-carpet ordeal? For some, there are many reasons, but chief among them is that holiday shopping season is right around the corner. Klein said that for the AMAs, now closing in on their 40th year, the hits might change but the song remains the same. "The stars need us right now, maybe more than ever. And we have always needed them."

The sight of Mariah arriving for a soundcheck is unforgettable. For it is just you and I, dear reader, who have that privilege, along with Amy Winehouse's 13-year-old goddaughter - not counting Mariah's buzzing apiary of flouncy make-up artists, hairdressers, stylists, PR women, bodyguards, driver, record company executives, three backing singers, half a dozen band members and her new husband (busy with camera), all with their own "people" and their people's people backstage.

Dressed in a short, belted, glitter-trimmed evening coat, accessorised with 6in stiletto boots, the famously top-heavy body progresses so slowly, so tentatively towards the stage that one's heart contracts - clearly, she has been in some terrible accident and left virtually blind. Her lovely face remains fixed on the insuperable four or five steps ahead while one long, slender arm reaches unseeingly to her left, where someone's gentle hand is magically present to guide her onwards.

With pitiful deliberation, they mount the steps together and suddenly Hero (her latest wobbly single) makes perfect sense. After an aeon, she reaches centre-stage, picks up her special, glittery little microphone and finally launches into that endless lip-trembling intro.

We, meanwhile, have our own Louis Walsh sitting behind us to interpret. Without him, we and Amy Winehouse's goddaughter would not be here to witness Mariah's Calvary. Her people had demanded a "closed set" for the soundcheck, but Louis has whispered briefly in someone's ear and we're free to stay. Now that's what we call power.

But tell us, Louis, what ails poor Mariah? "Ah, did you never hear the famous story when the MTV awards were staged in Ireland and there was a stairs and the famous line came back, 'Mariah doesn't do stairs'?" Mmmh. So no visual impairment then? "Well, I don't do mornings, so that's fine," he says in sunny Louis style

When the overawed X Factor contestants finally get to join Mariah to rehearse a ferociously angsty version of Hero , she stands aloof, while it takes three sets of intensive negotiations (too close, way too close, keep right back) before their correct distance from the diva is established. When the poor contestants pitched up at the Dorchester Hotel the day before for a kind word, she kept them waiting for three or four hours, which is probably why they still look tear-struck as she is filmed slo-o-owly descending the stairs to spout such inanities as "I really liked Daniel . . .".

Louis shrugs forgivingly. "It's the people around her building her up into this diva," he says.

Inside this Wembley bubble, however, the yawning abyss between star and wannabe is wretchedly exposed. Mariah has her own gold-coloured trailer a few feet from the studio door. The contestants share the bog-standard canteen with the rest of us. So there is the bizarre sight of oddly familiar, spangly, hair-tugging boys and girls floating around, oddly well-trained to kiss strangers on both cheeks and say " sooo nice to meet you, thank you sooo much for coming down tonight", while everyone around them is munching on their fish and chips. For regular X Factor viewers, it smacks of that quintessentially British dream where the Queen suddenly turns up for tea.

The final work in the exhibition, Touch My Body (Green Screen Version) (2008), is a reworking of Mariah Carey's music video for the track of the same name. By masking everything in the video other than Carey's physical form in Chroma Key green screen, Laric created a template over which others were able to edit further new versions of the video. In the final video both Laric's original re-edit and those made subsequently by others who located his green screen version online are shown alongside each other.

Oliver Laric (1981) studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and is - together with Aleksandra Domanovic, Christoph Priglinger and Georg Schnitzer - one of the co-founders of the platform VVORK.

Though Carey's song "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" from her latest album "E=MC2" appeared over the end credits of Adam Sandler's "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" (a film in which she also makes a cameo), it's unusual for the performer to contribute something specific to a film. Deconstructing her songwriting process, Carey explains: "It was a different experience from an album project. I was very close to the story and in particular my character's struggle, so it made it easier for me as a writer. I just began channeling Krystal's pain and hope."

Between takes and guitar lessons on the set, Carey's humming and diary entries evolved into the Spanish-guitar-accented ballad that she sings during the film's competition scene. In the recorded version of the single, Carey leaned on Willie Nelson to play guitar.

"The song is basically a three-act play and chronicles the evolution of Krystal," says Carey.

"Dream" is reminiscent of Carey's '90s ballads that often evoked themes of soul-searching, lost love and inner strength.

The three artists will vie for “Most Demanded Artist Of The Year” – one of 20 different awards categories as part of the Music Choice awards show. Each of the projected 1 billion orders for music videos or originals in 2008 was counted as a vote to determine the Most Demanded award nominees in each of the 20 categories.

The four part video show – hosted by Geffen Records recording artists Prima J (Jessica and Janelle Martinez) will be offered on a VOD basis for a month beginning Dec. 1, said officials from the 38 million-subscriber network.

Mariah Carey, who put on an incredible performance which had some local publicists speechless for a change. Mariah was on fire, and so were some very funny-smelling cigarettes wafting through the ballroom.
In the Carey crowd, a VIP section of more scene stealers, including Paris Hilton and her real BFF Vegas showman Jeff Beacher, FB owner Jeff Soffer's BFF Brett Ratner, whose Prison Break star, Sucre, aka Amaury Nolasco, was among the most gregarious in the house. Also there, randomly, Kate Hudson with a mega entourage that could have smacked down Diddy's.

After Carey sang her last high note, the frenzied crowd crunched into Blade, the resort's subterranean lounge, which was a gawker's dream come true.

Mariah admitted she didn't know how many pieces of luggage she actually had but that large luggage is a requirement to maintain her glamorous image.

She said: "The thing is it matters. People want to criticise you if it doesn't look right but then you're a diva and people want to criticise you for bring a diva.

"Sometimes I end up with one pair of shoes that I love and then I get photographed in them and it's like I can't keep wearing them."

The finalists of The X Factor have re-recorded her international hit Hero to raise money for charity and Mariah explained how she came up with the concept for the song.

"Sometimes I wake up and in the middle of the night and have an idea and have to get up and record it straight away before I forget it.

"Or with 'Hero', I was in the studio and someone was telling me about this film 'Hero' with Dustin Hoffman in it. I took a walk to the loo and when I came back I had this idea for a song, and that was what then became 'Hero'."

Hero, just one of the hits that have helped Carey sell over 200 million albums worldwide, was also rumoured to have inspired Barack Obama before his Presidential acceptance speech last week.

Carey said his historic win had special significance for her.

"I'm ecstatic. When my parents first got married as an inter-racial couple, a biracial couple, it was illegal in a lot of states so I just feel like we've come so far as a nation," Mariah told This Morning. 

Mariah - who appeared on UK TV talent show 'The X Factor' last weekend - also revealed she still finds it hard to control her nerves when she is performing live.

She added: "I really used to get very nervous and I would have to try so hard to stay calm before shows, but it's hard. I come from a studio background and I had to learn doing it live in front of the world. On shows like 'American Idol' at least they get training to sing live."

"I'm really looking forward to being in love on Christmas," Carey, 38, tells Redbook.

And for the singer the festive season involves a trip to Aspen that begins from the moment she flies into town.

She says: "The first thing that happens is I get off the plane and get into the car, where they have Christmas music blasting and a bottle of champagne ready to pop open.

"It sounds awful but I'm a big kid in that way.

"As soon as I get in that car, I am engulfed in Christmas. I think Nick will be up for that, I really do. He'll be laughing.

"I'm usually working right up until Christmas, but no matter what's going on, no matter where I am, whether it's right after a tour or a video shoot somewhere, on December 21, I head to my house in Aspen and start celebrating.

"I have an extended group of friends and family from all over - as far as Sweden and the United Kingdom, even - and every year we gather in Aspen to make it the most festive Christmas ever.

"We try to outdo ourselves every year.

"This year, in addition to everything I love about celebrating the holidays, it's all going to be heightened because of Nick - in a really good way.

"I think he senses that Christmas is a big deal to me, so he's sort of just going with the flow, so that's cool.

"I'm pretty sure his family and friends will be out there too. We have to figure out, but we're gonna make it work."

Carey's traditions include everything from the way the house is decorated to holiday escapades like skiing in the snow and taking dips in the hot tub.

"Aspen is all about the snow," she says, "and the environment, so it automatically puts you in that celebratory mood.

"I don't really do up my New York apartment for Christmas; I save everything for Aspen.

"The house there is all done up with lights and bells - not over the top, but quaint. It's like a gingerbread house.

"And then you open the door and the first thing you see is this enormous tree and a manger.

"I started going to Aspen the year after my album Butterfly came out, and that year I collected a ton of butterfly ornaments.

"So every year, before we get up there, I have a woman who comes to the house and sets up what we call the butterfly tree.

"It's gorgeous, all silver and gold with angels and butterflies on it and gold, silver and white ornaments.

"And we have a manger set up in the front room because, to me, the season is about celebrating, about being with friends and loved ones, but first and foremost it's about the birth of Christ, and I think it's important to remember that."

Carey has included aspects from her childhood into her very own winter wonderland celebrations.

The singer, who married Cannon in April, says: "Every year we do what we call the 'Charlie Brown Christmas tree', where we string up those big red and green bulbs and hang tons of ornaments - mostly ornaments my fans have sent me over the years.

"They did pictures of, like, me and the dog, just really cute stuff.

"A couple of years ago, one of my friends gave us the idea of taking Polaroids of each other and then decorating them and putting them on the tree.

"That was really fun; I think we might do it again this year. It's a wonderful time for us all to bond and really get into the spirit.

"Last year I was very inspired by the movie Elf_so we set up one of the upstairs bedrooms like the North Pole, all covered in fake snow, with tents and an area where the kids could play with toys like Etch A Sketches.

"My friend's two children were three and one at the time and they were in heaven."

While she likes to have a traditional Christmas, Carey says she and her friends try to make it "our own."

"The focal point of the week is the 23rd, when we do a real sleigh ride," she says.

"Depending on how many of us are up there we get one or two horse-drawn sleighs and we bundle up and go riding in the snow under the stars.

"We always drink cocoa with butterscotch schnapps to keep warm, and we sing at the top of our lungs, not even remotely trying to sound good.

"Later, we go in the hot tub in our Christmas bikinis, then roll in the fresh snow and jump back in the tub."

"Christmas bikinis," Carey says include the "Santa ones" that she loves although they "don't stay on very well, so I usually just do a red bikini with a Santa hat."

The singer also has an agenda for the night before Christmas, saying: "Every Christmas Eve I make linguine and white clam sauce for everybody.

"They always ask: 'Are you gonna make your clam sauce?'

"I'd be worried if Nick hadn't tried it yet, but he did and ate the whole plate!

"I also make stuffed shells. It's kind of random, because I'm not Italian but the recipes were my father's and he gave them to me before he passed away, so it's become a tradition.

"And we always have A Charlie Brown Christmas on TV [while we eat].

"Before the kids go to bed, we leave out cookies and a note for Santa.

"The rest of us stay up really late that night and I usually end up wrapping presents until the sun comes up.

"My problem is, I do too much shopping out there because I never get a chance before that, so I'm sitting up all night wrapping.

"Then I sleep in Christmas Day, which kind of ruins Christmas morning for everybody."

She then adds: "Well, they don't have to [wait].

"Definitely I always tell everyone to let the kids open presents before I get up.

"We do stockings; we all have stockings with our names on them, even the dogs."

Dinner on Christmas Day is a glamorous affair. The singer says: "Actually that's the night we dress up for dinner.

"Last year, my pastor came and did a service for us and ate dinner with us.

"And when I say dress up, I mean I'm in a gown.

"I've got lots of vintage pieces and I wear either red or white and jewellery.

"Usually, a couple of days before, while everyone else is skiing, I just sit around playing dress-up.

"I don't know what that's about - I mean who does that?

"But skiing means being cold and getting up really early - two things I'm not very good at."

Carey's extravagant Christmas traditions are a far cry from the ones she used to have while growing up in New York.

She lived with her mum after her parents divorced when she was quite young.

"My mother, now she was festive," the singer says.

"She always wanted Christmas to be exciting. We didn't always have enough money for a lot of presents, but she'd wrap up whatever she could - even an orange - and say it was from the cat or something, just so I could have things to open.

"I think that when kids are little it's really all about opening things; it doesn't matter so much what they are.

"And my mother always made things very fun."

With a mother who was an opera singer and a vocal coach, music filled the household during the holidays.

"She usually had a Christmas party where she'd make mulled wine and invite all her friends and we'd decorate the tree and everyone would sing carols," Carey says.

"So music is very important to me around the holidays.

"By the end of the week in Aspen everybody is ready to kill me, because from the minute we get there to the minute we leave, I have the Christmas music on.

"Usually it's satellite radio, but we throw our favourites in there, like the James Brown Christmas album and the Jackson Five Christmas album.

"Oh, and I love the Chipmunks' Christmas album.

"It's such a throwback to childhood - just laughing and having a good time."

The singer also celebrates the season with those in need.

She says: "One year I did a concert for Camp Mariah, which is a camp I started that benefits underprivileged children.

"And every year I work with the foster kids of Denver.

"We do a holiday event for them, and the last couple of years - I worry about saying this in case any of them read it - Santa has come and he looks so much like Santa, a real beard and everything.

"And all the kids get gifts and get to take pictures with him."

But this year she will also be thinking about what to give her new husband, actor Nick Cannon.

"I've had a few ideas, but I wouldn't want this to come out before Christmas and give all my ideas away."

And the woman who had a hit with the song All I Want for Christmas Is You, says she doesn't know what gifts she wants.

"Honestly, I haven't really thought about it," she says.

"I just want to have a really good time - a restful, enjoyable time. I want to be ecstatic and have the best Christmas ever.

"And I know that's a really huge request right now.

"There's so much going on in the world that's pretty dismal, but I've always had that glass-half-full outlook.

"That's how I am. And I really think it'll be a memorable Christmas."

After ten years on air, MTV's Total Request Live is coming to an end. On November 16, MTV is going to throw a ridiculous celebration, Total Finale Live! 

Mariah and a parade of celebrities and performers like no other will take a last stroll through the TRL studio set and past the squealing audience as they look back at a decade of incredible shows, guests, music videos and more.

But he was more lucky later though, he met Mariah and said he was very excited to meet Mariah as she is one the most successful artists of all time.

But his bad luck was not over, while beeing at the after-party at Jimmy'z, he quickly went back to his hotel to put on a more comfortable outfit and he fell of the stairs and was unconscius and was even rushed to the hospital.

While staying at her hotel, Mariah enjoyed a private dinner cooked by renowned chef Alain Ducasse and chatted about cooking receipts with him.

Paris Hilton, Kate Walsh and Akon will also be presenters at the telecast, which airs live on ABC on Nov. 23. 

Alicia Keys leads the nominations with five. Coldplay and The Eagles are up for four apiece, while Lil' Wayne and Chris Brown are up for three awards each. All five are up for Artist of the Year honors, the night's biggest award. 
Tickets to the telecast, which will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel from the Nokia Theater LA Live!, are still available to the public.

And she reinforced them in spectacular fashion at last night's World Music Awards.
The singer's extraordinary demands included a £100,000 private jet transport to the ceremony in Monte Carlo and a £10,000-a-night penthouse suite at the exclusive Hotel de Paris for two nights. 

Never one to travel light, she also asked for similar VIP treatment at the hotel for her 15-strong entourage of stylists and personal assistants.
And when she felt a little peckish, she decided that the five-star hotel just wasn't quite up to standard. 

Instead she had renowned Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse brought to her hotel to cook her a private dinner.
Seemingly impressed with the results, she then asked if he could stay and teach her how to cook the clam linguine for her new husband Nick Cannon.
Never mind that the 38-year-old was appearing for only 15 minutes on the night. 

After collecting her Special Achievement award, she made a short speech before being escorted immediately home.

Being in love clearly suits Mariah Carey. Not only is she “happier than she’s ever been” with new husband Nick Cannon but, at 38, she’s also in the best shape of her life.

Talking exclusively to the Mirror following her performance on The X Factor – when she wowed viewers with her stunning curves in two figure-flaunting dresses on Saturday night – Mariah says “I feel great, it’s hard work to stay in shape but the results are worth it.”

Newly-single Simon Cowell certainly seemed to think so, admiring more than just her impressive five-octave vocal range.

In the last year alone, the super-toned singer has shed more than a stone through a combination of a strict low-fat diet and an intense exercise regime devised by Mariah’s long-time trainer Patricia Gay.

“She’s been toned since the beginning,” says Patricia, who flies in from the Caribbean island of St Barts to train with her client and friend.
“She is small. She has only muscle and no fat at all. She is a hard worker!”

Indeed, the statuesque 5ft 9in star wears size 6-8, and an invitation by Mariah to “feel my thigh” confirms Patricia’s assertion.

But getting in such spectacular shape does not come easily.

Mariah admits she follows a “bleak” 1,500 calorie-a-day diet, comprising few of her favourite comfort foods. “It’s mainly about the diet, so when my trainer leaves it’s sooo hard to stick to it! For breakfast, Patricia will make some boring eggs and I don’t really like eggs anyway, and she’ll give me some probiotic yoghurt to help with digestion.

“Her favourite thing for lunch and dinner is this plain vegetable soup. It’s very bland – no cream. Cream is the tastebuds’ friend but the body’s enemy!
“Occasionally she’ll make a low-fat burrito for lunch – to me, it’s such a treat, and it tastes like the most amazing thing ever.”

Does she ever cheat?
“A little bit, sometimes. Nick loves candy, so sometimes I’ll sneak one of his sweets!
“My friends and I love to go to this one place in New York that has fried chicken and macaroni cheese, and I’ll go but I’ll just have a few morsels of chicken and a bite of macaroni cheese. I’m not going to sit there and eat a whole portion because it’s not worth it to me. I would definitely feel guilty.”

Her self-deprivation is clearly paying dividends, though. In the video for her new single, I Stay In Love – directed by husband Nick – she flaunts her spectacular shape in a skimpy Las Vegas showgirl outfit.  Does her other half join her on Patricia’s strict eating plan?
“No way!” she laughs. “He works out a lot, but he can eat pretty much whatever he wants – he’d never get fat. Men are so lucky.”

Mariah’s disciplined approach to her diet is supplemented by an intensive exercise regime, comprising up to two hours’ of cardio and sculpting every day.
“Right now, fortunately, Patricia is not here so I’m getting a break!” Mariah says. “But I’ll usually work out seven days a week.”

Her regime consists of low-impact water aerobics  combined with pilates mat exercises and, most recently, yoga.
“I love the water,” she adds. “And I like doing water aerobics because it’s less stress on the body – it’s three times as effective as exercising outside the water – but mainly because you forget the fact that you’re actually working out. You’re splashing around in the water.”

The pilates moves help to whittle her tiny waist and sculpt her arms and thighs, and the yoga is making Mariah super-flexible. “ I’m so shocked that I can actually put my feet over my head,” she says.

Despite having one of the most enviable figures in showbiz, Mariah insists she would never want to be perceived as skinny, as she is proud of her womanly curves.
“I still have a butt!” she laughs. “I think being very thin with no muscle tone is not that pretty.
“I work out a lot but I wouldn’t want to get big biceps. Some women can do that but I’m not that petite so I couldn’t get away with it.”

So what tips can Mariah give us to show some A-list polish in the festive season?
“High heels are always good,” she smiles.

And the credit crunch is no barrier to a superstar glow: the secret to Mariah’s perfect skin is  as-simple as it gets – three litres of water a day. “It’s so important to stay hydrated,” she says.

Of course, the excitement of new love helps more than any £400 skin cream.

“Do I feel the best I ever have?” she ponders.
“Well, I’m healthy and it’s the most incredible feeling to know you’ve found The One. Life doesn’t get much better.”

The hopefuls had to sit in the bar at London's posh Dorchester hotel waiting for the US singer, 38. And when they did meet Mariah most were so overcome they cried with emotion.

But Cowell blew his top when Friday's meeting made them all late for rehearsals - and 16-year-old Eoghan Quigg had to miss them altogether because he's not allowed on set after 7pm on weekdays.

An X Factor insider said: "Simon was furious about the delays and really annoyed with Mariah. He just wanted the hopefuls to meet the star and get back to the studios.

"He got so frustrated at one stage he ordered an assistant to go to the Dorchester and order the contestants into their limos."

The singer has confessed that she kept the  rap star waiting until they were married before, well, you know…they got down to the intimate side of their relationship.

But Mariah says hanging on for that two months from when they met in February to when they tied the knot in the Bahamas in April was well worth it.

She adds: “It’s not that we had NO intimacy, we just didn’t have complete intimacy. It’s just me, and my feelings.

“I definitely don’t want to push it on anybody else. But we both have similar beliefs, and I just thought that it would be so much more special if we waited until after we were married. And it was, and it still is.”

As the couple celebrate their six-month anniversary, the US star has declared she has never been happier.

And no doubt X Factor fans are over the moon that she has agreed to appear on the show tonight to mentor the wannabe stars and belting out her new single I Stay in Love.

One of her most famous songs, Hero, is currently at number one in the British charts and the X Factor finalists have recorded a version of the rousing ballad to raise funds for Help For Heroes, a charity helping British troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

It is already the biggest-selling single of 2008. Mariah has flown in from New York to help the aspiring singers, and perform alongside them on tonight’s show.

She says: “I think they’ve done a really good version. I’m a songwriter first and foremost, and it’s always a big compliment when someone wants to cover one of my tracks. I’ve been to the Middle East myself, to visit the troops, and I know what amazing work they do out there.”

So who is her favourite to win X Factor? She replies: “It’s hard to say.

“There are a lot of talented people this year. But I have really been looking forward to working with them, and getting to know them all individually.”

Mariah met Nick, who is also a DJ and actor, on the set of her video Bye Bye. After a whirlwind romance she was whisked down the aisle in the Caribbean.

And the singer says life has been a blissful since they she and Nick got hitched.

Sitting in the Dorchester hotel in London, she tells the Mirror: “We celebrated our anniversary with a huge Halloween party. I went in a cookies costume, and Nick dressed as milk. We had the most  amazing day.”

Lovingly caressing one of her huge heart-shaped diamond earrings, she went on: “He bought me these, and the biggest bunch of flowers you’ve ever seen. He’s incredibly romantic.”

The surprise wedding made headlines around the world. But no one was more stunned to be taking a second trip up the aisle than 38-year-old Mariah.

Her first marriage to former Sony Records boss Tommy Mottola ended acrimoniously a decade ago, and she admitted she was reluctant to take the plunge a second time.

She adds: “I was hesitant for a long time to get into a relationship and lose control of my heart and myself as a human being.

“I was very protective of myself. But this was something different. I was hesitant after having a bad experience, but this was something bigger than both of us.

“There was no question of not being ready when I met Nick. It felt 100 per cent right.”

The couple are so certain their love will last they have both had tattoos of each other’s names etched on their bodies.

Mariah says: “We really do feel we are soulmates. We actually first met each other in 2005, and we definitely had chemistry then, but we were both with other people and it wasn’t the right time.

“But whenever he was asked on TV who his celebrity crush was he would always say me, and friends would tell me, ‘Nick Cannon really likes you.’

“I would just say. ‘Oh, he’s probably just saying that’. I didn’t know what to believe. Then we met again on my video shoot and it all just clicked. It was pretty whirlwind, amazing.”

Speaking about the time Nick, who is 10 years her junior, proposed, she adds: “It was the day that they lit the Empire State Building in New York in pink and lavender, my signature colours, because it had just been announced that I’d had my 18th number one hit, beating Elvis Presley’s record.

“Nick handed me a sweet wrapper. I got to the candy ring, he’s always giving me those as he has a very sweet tooth, and I said to him: ‘Mine’s broken, there’s no sweet inside.’ He told me to open it anyway and there was this beautiful diamond ring inside.”

The very 17-carat sparkler she toyed with throughout our interview.

There was also a hint of broodiness. Two years ago she appeared to rule out becoming a mum, but now admits to being “ready for a family”. Mariah says: “I’ve changed my mind because I am with The One. I think we would make good parents, and that we’d be able to figure everything out together.

“People are constantly asking me if I’m pregnant, but I don’t like to talk about it too much. I just think about it as the next phase. We’ll see.”

Apart from her personal life, it seems Mariah has plenty to be happy about professionally, too.

She currently has two albums – E=MC2 and Ballads – in the UK charts, and has sold more than 200 million records worldwide.

The pop star also exclusively revealed to the Mirror she has a mammoth world tour planned for next year, showcasing her huge back catalogue of hits.

She adds: “I love going on the road, it’s the best way to connect with the fans. I still get nervous before performing. I get through it by saying a prayer before I sing, and trying to keep focused.”

With that, Mariah’s manager comes to collect her to meet the X Factor stars. He tells her they are beside themselves with excitement at the prospect of meeting their idol.

She replies: “Well it’s my honour. I’m just as excited myself.”

Mariah will perform her new single, I Stay In Love, as a special guest on the show.

And Dannii says the American star, in the UK to promote her new Ballads album, will put any would-be divas among the remaining contestants easily in the shade.

Dannii added: "Could it get any more nerve-wracking for the contestants? I think there's puppies and kittens being sent.

"Apparently, her dressing room is all going to be painted white and only certain types of flowers and candles and all that - I don't know.

"I want to see. Because all of the guests stay in the 'motor home' out the front so I want to see if it does actually get changed."

Barack Obama's wife Michelle played the singer's 1993 hit Hero to him before the election results were announced.

A friend of Mariah's said: "She was blown away when she heard. She is so honoured to have played her part in such an occasion." 

And Obama is not Mariah's only famous fan. The diva's arrival in London yesterday ( ) to promote her greatest hits album () has caused quite a stir with the X Factor contestants. 

Mariah will sing on the show this week while the rivals will each have to cover one of her songs.

Carey, 38, and her entourage are all flying first-class in and out of London and are staying at the Dorchester Hotel, where suites cost up to £2000 a night. 

She wants an entire floor of the studios cleared for her make-up, wardrobe and assistants.

U2 presented the accolade, while Take That, Mika, Razorlight, Jamie Cullum ad Sugababes performed in his honour.

U2's lead singer Bono described Mr Grainge as a "great" label boss. 
"He's a tough guy when it comes to deals but he's a very tender soul to deal with if you're U2." 
Mr Grainge let the band "be ourselves", and would "never try to interfere with us, never try to step on our toes", Bono added..

We’ve got our hands on the organisers’ plans and they’re going to spoil her rotten.

They’re forking out £10,000 on a private jet to whisk her from her X Factor performance on Saturday to Monaco for the lavish 20th anniversary celebrations.

It will be the first time she will be in town with her new hubby Nick Cannon – so the trip will be extra-romantic.

Especially since Nick recently confessed: “To be honest there was really no intimacy until we got married.

“That’s a lesson to young girls, don’t give them none until you get married.”

Flunkies are pulling out all the stops for the stunning star. An insider tells us: “It’ll be like a second honeymoon on board the jet for them. There’ll be no expense spared for Mariah. Lilies, mini burgers, sparkling water and bundles of her favourite Hello Kitty toys as a present.

“Staff wont disturb them until Mariah calls, to ensure the love-birds have the utmost privacy on the cosy flight.”

It will be just the luxury Mimi will need after her busy week on X Factor. She will perform her new single I Stay In Love during a Mariah Carey tribute week where she will also mentor the contestants.

The finalists are at No1 with a cover of her song Hero.

Her X Factor debut on Saturday comes after Simon Cowell personally stepped in to request her.

She’ll also perform Hero with the remaining finalists and is a massive fan of the show.

Off the back of her appearance, Mariah’s Greatest Hits album is set to rocket to No1.

And judging from her star treatment in Monaco, it looks like Christmas really has come early for the pop queen.

Building on the success of The X Factor finalists' version of the Mariah hit Hero, the boys and girls still in the competition will each perform another track made famous by the American diva. 

There are certainly plenty of tunes to choose from! With a career spanning 18 years, the record breaking pop queen was named the best selling female artist of millennium in 2000 and has had the more US number one hits than any other female in history. 

Of course, Mariah Carey week wouldn't be Mariah Carey week without the lady herself. 

So the legendary singer will appear on next Saturday's show. 

This is one week when even Simon won't have the nerve to tell anyone off for singing her songs!
