Mariah's a Hit With the Japanese
By Roger Friedman
Mariah Carey lost her shoe on stage Saturday night, but that's the only mistake so far in her Asian concert tour. I spoke to Mariah on Sunday morning around 9:15 a.m., which was either yesterday or today. I'm not sure because I hadn't had my coffee. But Mariah had just finished her show in Fukuoka and was glowing from the experience. "The only problem was, I lost my shoe on stage during 'Honey,'" she reported. "I couldn't find it, so we just covered until I got off stage." Other than missing shoes, Carey says the Japanese tour is going great guns. Fans are singing along with her hits, too. "They're singing along in Japanese and in English," she says. Carey's sales in the U.S. have been subpar of late, but in the Far East she is still an enormous sensation. Next up for the cleavage-obsessed diva is a three-night run at Tokyo's famous Budokan, plus several more shows in the country. She heads to her regular getaway on the Isle of Capri once she's done, then returns to the U.S. for a short tour of smaller theatres. Her first stop is Caesars Palace on July 26.

50 Cent Takes Out Old Blue Eyes (Again), Jay-Z R-O-Cs The Mic At Tour Kickoff
Trek kicked off Wednesday night in Hartford, Connecticut.
by Shaheem Reid
The Roc the Mic Tour highlights weren't limited to the headliners. Openers Lil' Mo, Fabolous and Missy Elliott all had brief sets filled mostly with big singles, and then Busta Rhymes came on. Rhymes showed that there is no such thing as an off night for him by raising the bar with his animated rapping, yelling and crotch-grabbing along with Spliff Star. Proving that his stamina on the mic is boundless, he performed both his and P. Diddy's lyrics from "Pass the Courvoisier," and with most of the Flipmode Squad conspicuously absent, he also rapped their parts on "I Know What You Want." The ladies in the crowd helped him out with Mariah Carey's parts on the chorus, but they totally bastardized her lyrics on the bridge. Bust kept his humorous nature, though, jabbing the audience. "Ya'll don't know the words to the song? Cut that sh-- off," he said, looking surprised. He then told the crowd to go buy his latest album after the concert was over, and then it was.

Try to win a Da Brat album
BMG UK New Media press release is below, you will also find two *official* audio clips of GTFY.
I've got 10 Brat albums to give away, it is not released until mid July....all we need you to do is pass the audio link on to as many people, preferably by posting on messageboards(preferably hip-hop/rnb/pop forums), once you have posted, screengrab the page and send all links etc to dapinkster79@aol.com.
Press Release
Da Brat releases her fourth album (first through So so Def which is now associated with BMG) LIMELITE, LUV & NITECLUBZ on 14th July(UK)/15th(U.S.A) Da Brat is famous for her tongue-twisting lyrics, and this album builds on her lyrical delivery and superior execution. With 20 songs already recorded, Da Brat also called upon long-time producer and "big brother" Jermaine Dupri to add to the album's production resume. "I also got a song called "Chuch" with [Arista recording artist] Cee-Lo and I also worked with my home girl, Mariah Carey. I'm shocking a lot of people this go round and this album is on fire," says Da Brat. Da Brat's fourth studio effort, LIMELITE, LUV & NITECLUBZ, is full of hits. "Who Am I?" one of her signature, syrupy thumpers produced by JD himself is dedicated to one of her favorite all-time emcees, MC Lyte. The song rides on an old school feel with a 21st century bounce. The radio friendly track, "Gotta Thing For You," features Mariah Carey on the hook beautifully cooing some old Bobby Caldwell lyrics from his classic song "What You Won't Do For Love." Other tracks include the breezy, steel-drum accentuated "Get Somebody" and the party starter "Gushy Wushy," among others. Da Brat confidently reaffirms her stature in the entertainment business.

In Loving Memory...
Mariah kicked off her Charmbracelet World Tour in Seoul, Korea on June 21 to a sold out crowd of over 12,000 fans. Shortly after Mariah took the stage she quieted the fans down and dedicated the show to the life and memory of Conor McNally and the McNally family. Mariah then did a special rendition of Through the Rain in loving memory of Conor.

Mariah Manages Tough Decision From Afar
By Roger Friedman
Mariah Carey did not attend the funeral of Conor McNally, her longtime manager's son, yesterday. It was not an easy decision. Conor, 21, was discovered dead on Wednesday morning just hours before Carey was boarding a flight for South Korea. McNally -- whose mom Louise has been the loyal captain of Mariah's career for several years -- overdosed according to police while partying with his friends at his parents' New Jersey home. The revelation of Conor's death only started to circulate around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, roughly an hour before Mariah was due to host the UJA Federation luncheon for the music business at the Pierre Hotel. Carey arrived a little late -- which is not exactly breaking news. But when she began reading from the TelePrompTer, she stopped and said to those seated in the room: "I'm sorry, I'm having trouble with the prompter. Believe me, I've had a bad morning." Carey gave no clue, though, of the tragic news she'd received on her way over to the Pierre. After the luncheon, there was discussion between Mariah and her MonarC Records partner Jerry Blair about whether she should stay to comfort McNally or fly to Korea and then return for the funeral. Unfortunately, Seoul is not a bus stop away from New York. It's about a 15-hour flight, which would have made a quick return impossible. "Instead of coming back Mariah taped a message for the funeral," says my source. "She also performed a tribute to Conor at the first show, singing 'Through the Rain.' She's been on the phone with Louise constantly." Ironically, the McNallys live not far from Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown in New Jersey horse country. As for Carey's first show, observers in Seoul tell me it was a hit. "Mariah literally had to send the people home," one said. "They wanted encore after encore." Carey returns to the U.S. on July 26, when presumably she will be able to try and console McNally. In the meantime, this column sends its own condolences to Louise and her family.

Swipe Mariah Carey's style...
Beauty: Mariah Carey's unique beauty is the result of mixed Venezuelan, Irish and African-American ethnicity. But there are a few other things you should know about the superstar's must-have 'beautifying' accessories and special routines.
Skin: First and foremost, Mariah uses a Humidifier to keep her skin moist and fresh. "I'm into makeup and good at doing my own--I had 500 hours of beauty-school training in the 11th grade," she says. As for irritated skin, Mariah recommends you "soak a cotton ball in a mix of milk and ice, and then use it as a compress."
Hair: Mariah confesses that her biggest beauty blunder occurred during her teen years when she decided to experiment with dying her hair. Carey also admits to a close call when it came to plucking her eyebrows. "Once I used a razor to shape my eyebrows. I kept shaving off more and more to get them even. Pretty soon, they were gone. I stuck to tweezers after that," she laughs.
Eyes: To achieve Mariah's exotic look, try lining your upper lids with Perfect Points Plus Eye Pencil in Espresso. Then try One-Kit Professional Eye Enhancers in Swiss Chocolate on the lids up to the crease, and finish with two coats of black mascara.
Cheeks: For the Mariah look, try sweeping 'Cheekers Blush' in Soft Sable on the apples of your cheeks.
Lips: So what exactly is it in Mariah's make-up bag that brings those luscious lips to life? "It's so full, I'm not sure, though I always carry a M•A•C Spice lip pencil," she says. For the Mariah look, why not try using a continuous Color Lip Definer in Brown tones. Then fill them with a Marathon Lipcolor in Café au Lait.
Fashion: In 1999 Carey caused quite a stir when the video for her single "Heartbreaker" premiered on MTV. The clip showed Mariah sporting a pair of Waistless jeans - which became an instant global fashion fad. Stars such as Christina Aguilera, Kylie Minogue, and Lenny Kravtiz were quick to capitalize on Mariah's new trend. So how exactly does one achieve the 'waistless' effect? It's simple. All you need is your scissors! The jeans start at the hips... so the waistband, top button, and belt loops must be cut off to achieve the low-slung effect. The jeans (worn skintight so they don't slide off!), should be faded or old - this is part of the look. Thin diamanté belts are then slung snake-like right around the hips before being left to dangle.
Diet: Just how does Mariah maintain such an ideal figure? "Well, I'm eating much healthier now, having mini meals throughout the day since my work schedule is so hectic," she says. "I also work out more often with a personal trainer." According to MTV, Mariah requested Evian bottled water, low fat margarine, and even donuts and danishes during her last tour. Nowdays the leggy star limits herself to lots of salads with fish and skinless broiled chicken. Word has it that Carey has even traded in her favourite Crystal champagne for bottled water, and iced tea with a slice of lemon and no sweetener. Baskets of fruit are also a must for the dressing room. Mariah also has a personal chef and nutritionist.
Exercise: With this diva's busy schedule, it must be hard finding the time to work out. Carey confesses she often heads for water when it comes to keeping in shape - "I love doing an aerobic workout in the water. When I was vacationing in the islands, I would exercise with my trainer in the pool and it was such a great, strenuous workout." Mariah also hits the treadmill to keep in shape, and says that watching TV while toning up helps to pass the time. "I have to say that watching comedies such as "Austin Powers" really keeps me laughing and motivated, which is great when you're exercising." So does Mariah like to sing or listen to music while working? "I don't do too much singing, but I do listen to many different things while I work out. I look for something with a hot beat that keeps me going," she says. In 1997, the songbird revealed that she doesn't do aerobic exercise when singing - "It depletes my energy and takes the edge off my voice. So instead, I do sit-ups, leg raises, and push-ups." Carey admits to not have a favourite exercise 'move' - "Working on specific areas and seeing results really keeps me motivated to stick with any type of program," she says. Carey is undoubtedly toned. "I always have been a natural athlete, I love to run at the beach", she says. "Capri was marvelous. I spent a lot of time going up and down hills. When I'm on the road I walk a lot and I'm usually accompanied by my little dog Jack. When I have a break in my work agenda I go walking with him. To do the shows is also an excusing exercise. I dance a lot and I do a lot of training on stage. My oldest brother Morgan used to put me to raise my legs to do abdominal exercise since I was a little girl. He practices kick boxing and I was always imitating him." So just what is Mariah's long-term goal? "My basic goals are just to be the best person I can be, take care of myself and enjoy life to the fullest," she says. You go, girl! Did you know that that singing along to Mariah's ballads may well increase lung endurance? Well it's true! According to Leisure, Health & Fitness Magazine, singing enables someone, of any age or gender to improve breathing techniques, without them knowing that they are doing it - thus modifying the time of the average work out by up to 20% longer. "The Mariah Carey "Lung Work Out" does work, actually the fact is exercising to one song is equivalent to running 250 metres (for the lungs, not muscular composition). You will know it's working if you feel out-of-breath after a song is completed. Be careful if you have respiratory problems."
Relaxation: So just when does Mariah take the time to unwind from her busy schedule? "When I'm not performing, I enjoy hanging out with friends, a bit of vacation time and swimming. Swimming is great exercise and incredibly relaxing as well." Carey even hired a masseuse who helps her overcome those aches and pains at the end of a long day.
Spirituality: Mariah's spirituality shines through her music, and is evident in her lyrics to songs such as "Can't Take That Away," "Make It Happen," and "My Saving Grace", which appears on her latest release, "Charmbracelet." Here Carey sings "Giving me peace Giving me strength when I'd Almost lost it all Catching my every fall I still exist because you keep me safe I found my saving grace within you And the bountiful things that you do Lord thank you For delivering me."
Celebrity Horoscopes had this to say about Mariah's astrological blueprint:
- The songbird was born on March 27, 1970: "Born under an Aries Sun, Carey is a feisty and independent woman who wants to be the best. Much to her credit, Carey has the enthusiasm and initiative to be front-page news. With her Sun Conjunct Mercury, Mariah's will to act on all her many ideas is further strengthened. Nervous energy is the order of the day here -- mainly good. Carey's Sun and Mercury both find themselves Opposite Uranus, the Planet of Rebellion, in her chart. The Sun's Opposition to Mercury's Opposition to Uranus sounds off in the form of consistent ideas, and interesting points of view. Thanks to her Mercury in Aries, Carey won't always think before she speaks. Mariah is fast on her feet, loves to mix it up and is a fighter when it comes to verbal sparring. With her Venus, Planet of Love, also in Aries, the singer is competitive when it comes to relationships, although she is also deliciously sociable and delightfully romantic. Her Mars in Taurus brings Carey back to terra firma. The Bull's meeting with the Planet of Passion signals strength and determination, but of a more measured and purposeful variety. The songstress will get the things she wants, albeit in due course. Since Mars is Conjunct stern Saturn here, Carey will see to it that she's always got a plan and is working steadily toward it." Heroes comment: "Carey also admits to a close call when it came to plucking her eyebrows. "Once I used a razor to shape my eyebrows. I kept shaving off more and more to get them even. Mariah's point is very clear

I wouldn't normally bang on about another girl's boobs but these are hard to ignore. Mariah Carey looked erm, alert as she arrived for an awards bash in New York. In fact, some of the photographers clambering to get a snap of her had to duck for cover when she turned around quickly. An onlooker said: "She looked amazing in a bright red dress and matching shades, but they are not the only things that caught the eye." More confirmation, if it were needed, that Mariah is still a very big star.

Mariah Carey Tells Eminem To Get A New Hobby
John Norris of MTV News caught up with Mariah Carey on TRL on Wednesday to find out what she's been up to and clear up those Eminem rumors. Mariah suggested Em get a new hobby besides giving her grief, like golfing or knitting. Read on for a transcript.
John: Guys, thanks a lot. Yes, I'm across the river from you guys in new jersey. With the very beautiful mariah carey. How are you doing?
Mariah: Thank you. How are you?
John: Great. Are you excited about the launch of the Charmbracelet tour?
Mariah: Yes. I'm very excited as they are in the next room, i guess.
John: I have to ask you, in the press lately, there's been a whole sort of new life breathed into this thing between eminem and you. I don't know -- it doesn't show any signs of letting up.
Mariah: I don't know what the whole situation is at first, I said it fete like a cat fight but I'm not fighting, but now it's like a drag show. Like what are we doing? I'm just totally confused. Never mind.
John:  The last I heard he's got these phone messages saying --
Mariah: Great. We all have messages, don't we? We all send messages and we all send subliminal messages, so we don't want to continue the drag show, so we should end it know now.
John: You have to end it.
Mariah: You have to reel it in. Get a hobby. Golf is great. Maybe golf. Or maybe knitting.
John: Oh, wow.
Mariah: That can work.
John: You have a tour about to launch. Do you address any of this beef in the show itself? No?
Mariah: I'm so not understanding what the whole thing is about. It's a little abusive at this point.
John: He went after you on the "glitter" thing.
Mariah: Wasn't that three years ago almost? He should be happy with his life. Marshall, just be happy.
John: Because you are.
Mariah: I'm ecstatic, and I never had an affair with the guy. So I'm just confused.
John: I know. Just seems to be perpetuating.
Mariah: You know what? If it -- whatever. If it's making him happy, then that's good. I'm all for equal rights. He should be happy too.
John: You're not pushing yourself too hard because i know you've got a pretty heavy pace these days with working and getting the tour ready, right?
Mariah: No, I'm not pushing myself too hard. I'm having lovely nights of rest and peace and quiet.
John: We're happy to hear that. The tour kicks now have japan, it will be in north america in july and august. And the reissue at the end of july.
Mariah: Exactly.
John: So much to look forward to. Thank you.
Mariah: Thank you, john.
John: Back to you guys.

Mariah tours globe for guys
Mariah Carey will keep an eye peeled as she tours the globe this summer giving concerts all around the world.
"I'm looking for a boyfriend," she told Page Six in an exclusive interview. The songbird with the six-octave range has been unattached since breaking up with Luis Miguel in 2001, though she had a brief dalliance with Eminem last year that ended badly. "He is such a little boy," Mariah said. "This whole thing is so high school." Carey left for Japan this morning, where she has a large, rabid following, to start her "Charmbracelet" world tour, which will be smaller than originally planned. "Her U.S. tour was scaled back and, due to lack of interest, they are now doing 'small, intimate' shows, instead of big arenas," a source said. While Carey acknowledges a downsized tour, she told us: "It is all about the fans. I want to be close to them. I even am having them choose which songs I will sing - 32,000 fans are voting right now!" Adding to the stress, Ashanti and Craig David - who were in talks to be Carey's opening acts - have dropped out. But Carey downplays any problems. "I am besieged by artists who want to be on my tour," she said, although she declined to name names. Carey is looking to her own label, Monarc, for talent instead. "I found my own groups who are already signed to my label," she said. One group, Bell & Nae Nae, is comprised of a 15-year-old rapper (Nae Nae) and a 14-year-old singer (Isabell, "Bell"). The other act is child singer Sadie, who's also known as Dat Baby. Sadie "is like the African-American Shirley Temple," Carey cooed. "[Best friend] Da Brat found Nae Nae and my stylist introduced me to Bell. They are like TLC, they sing, they rap. They'll perform with me in Japan and I'll see if they can do the U.S." Carey starts her U.S. tour in Las Vegas on July 26 and wraps it up at Radio City Music Hall on Sept. 18. The original venue for the New York tour was Madison Square Garden. When Carey gets back she will film a movie, "The Sweet Science," about boxing. "I play a really bad boxer," Carey laughed.

Mariah Carey Meets Up With Ex-Boyfriend Derek Jeter
Roger Friedman of FoxNews.com reports that before heading to South Korea on her world tour, Mariah Carey had a reunion last night with old boyfriend and New York Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter at the Regent Ballroom. The pair were there for Jeter's charity, the Turn 2 Foundation. Mariah had been invited by Derek's sister, with whom she is still friendly. "Derek announced all the celebs in the audience," a source revealed, "running down the list matter of factly. He called out Mariah's name just like that, Mariah Carey, as if nothing had gone on between them. But you could feel the buzz. It was like Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio meeting up again." Read more

Asian Releases of Charmbracelet Tour Edition Postponed
According the urgent notification from Universal Music Taiwan, just today, Island Def Jam requested all of the Universal Music branch offices in Asia to push back the local releases of Charmbracelet Tour Edition. There has been some guess around but I just received insider's report of the truth. It says there're still some copyright problems for 2 tracks, which are probably "Get A Thing Of You" and "I Know What You Want". Island Def Jam is still negotiating with the copyright owners and schedule to postpone the tour edition until 17 June in Taiwan. Universal Music Japan also pushed back the tour edition and not actual release date confirmed yet.

Mariah: A 'Save The Music' Hero

(CBS) The Early Show's "Save the Music" guest Thursday was the No.1 selling female artist of all time. Mariah Carey, who made a donation to the music campaign, has 15 No. 1 hit singles and was the only artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s. Carey as been one of Save The Music Foundation's longest supporters. She says when she was a kid she was not a stellar student but music kept her on track. She tells co-anchor Harry Smith,"I really wanted to do what I like. What I loved was music. When they take the programs out of the schools, you might be missing an opportunity to get one of the most incredible talents that could emerge out of a school or whatever area. So I feel it's important to support Save the Music." On Thursday, she donated a microphone, which she says costs a small fortune, signed "Love always, Mariah." Put your bid on eBay and it can be yours. The daughter of a former opera singer and vocal coach, Carey began singing at the age of 4 and was writing her own songs by the time she was attending Olfield Middle School. About her upbringing, she says, "Music was always important to me. My mom is a vocal coach, so I had it at home, too. I had a really cool music teacher who totally believed in me and would make me feel special. And so I like to give her a little bit of credit as well, because you need that encouragement. Maybe if they didn't have music programs, some of those kids wouldn't get that. We wouldn't have people like Jimmy Jam who is an all-around incredible person." Jimmy Jam has also been supporting Save the Music in a variety of ways. The legendary music producer announced on Thursday's The Early Show a pledge by ASCAP (Foundation (the American Society of Composer Authors, and Publishers). Jam says, "We are a songwriter organization. We have 100,000 songwriters around the country. And what we've done, wherever VH1 Save the Music goes into schools and gives instruments, we give sheet music so that the kids can learn. We've been doing that for a while. Now, what we're going to do today is add a new component at a grass-roots level, utilizing our 100,000 members, which I'm one of them. We're going to go in and do master classes with the kids as part of the education program that we're doing. I may show up at your school one day and show you a little piano stuff." ASCAP is donating $100,000 worth of music. The auction item will be autographed bobblehead dolls of Jimmy Jam and partner Terry Lewis. Jam is a member of the ASCAP board of directors. Along with Terry Lewis, he has produced an astonishing 16 No.1 records and more than 40 top-10 hits. Jam has produced for the likes of Janet Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, TLC, Usher and Mariah Carey. Why The Need Recent budget cuts have put many music education programs at risk. From Providence to Portland, communities have reduced or eliminated public school music programs. This is occurring in spite of the growing body of research that documents the benefits of music education and some overwhelming public support. An astounding 95 percent of Americans believe that music is a key component in a child's well-rounded education, according to a 2003 Gallup Survey. What You Can Do If you want to help keep music in your local schools, here's what you can do: Donate an instrument - If you live in New York City, bring your instrument to The Early Show Plaza at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue, but there also are drop-off locations all around the country. Bid on great stuff - Go to eBay where celebrities have donated various items. All proceeds go to the VH1 Save the Music Foundation. Donate Money - Go to vh1savethemusic.com to make a cash contribution. Donations will be used to purchase new instrument. Support your local programs - Help support public school music programs in your community. Visit the VH1 Save The Music Web site for tools and materials or go to supportmusic.com. Only 25 percent of our nation's 8th graders are able to participate in instrumental music. This is a big concern because research has proven that students who are involved with music do better in school and are less likely to do drugs or join gangs The VH1 Save The Music Foundation purchases new musical instruments to restore music education programs that have been cut because of budget reductions in the past or to save programs at risk of elimination due to lack of instruments. Mariah Carey was part of the first Public Service Announcement series, raising awareness of Save the Music; she participated in the very first VH1 DIVAS LIVE benefit concerts in 1998 (and has performed in two others). She has donated items for annual auctions, made public appearances to speak out on behalf of the foundation and has visited public schools where music programs have been restored. She says music has helped her through the tough times in her life. She explains, "The thing that I have tried to put into my music is the spirit of someone who stays with things and makes it happen despite adversity. Songs like 'Hero' or 'Through the Rain' are about survival. "That's how I have gotten through my life. Music is something that has gotten me through every difficult situation, from 'Charmbracelet,' which is my emotional release, writing down everything I needed to say, singing from my heart, a healing process. That's why it's very important that we keep saving the music for kids like these." Next week, Carey kicks off her first world tour in three years in support of her current CD, "Charmbracelet," which features the No. 1 selling single "Through the Rain" and the new single, "Bringing on the Heartbreak" which is a Def Leppard cover. The "Charmbracelet" world tour starts in Seoul, Korea, June 21. The U.S. leg kicks off July 26 in Las Vegas. This is her first-ever theatre tour, a more scaled-down production that she wanted to provide a more intimate environment for her fans. So she is asking fans to request their favorite songs on her Web site and she will use those choices to come up with her set list for each night. Carey's "Charmbracelet" CD, released in December 2002,has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide and has topped the charts across the globe. It is the first release of her own record label, MonarCMusic. Randy Jackson of "American" Idol fame, co-produced a lot of the album with Carey and is her musical director. Carey's was recently honored at the Fresh Air Fund's annual Spring Gala for her contributions to make sure kids from the city can get out to the country and go to camps.

Carey on
Who says those Divas can't get along? It turns out Mariah Carey will become Diva Las Vegas when she plays The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in late July. Carey is often compared to the theater's primary tenant, Celine Dion, in terms of their dazzling vocal range and even more dazzling commercial success. There had been reports here and elsewhere that Dion didn't want to have another female performer take her stage. But an insider confirmed Monday that Carey is indeed coming to Caesars Palace. And despite such well-publicized failures as "Glitter," the end of her marriage to Tommy Mottola and her stay at Silver Hill, the tony Connecticut rehab, Carey remains a top-selling recording artist with a talent second to none. Tickets are expected to go on sale this weekend for the planned July 25 and July 26 shows.

Mariah Carey Surprises Teens At Gymnastics Class
The New York Daily News reports that a children's gymnastics class at Chelsea Piers on Wednesday was interrupted by Damon Dash and Mariah Carey. "She was dressed to be noticed," a spy revealed. "She and Damon just walked into this class and sat down. Of course, the 13-year-old girls started screaming. She signed a few autographs, and then they left."

Hip hoppers a little too hot
Some of hip hop's fiercest feuds simmered onstage and backstage at the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert Tuesday night.
Two hundred New Jersey state troopers in riot gear were among the crowd that turned out at a soggy Giants Stadium to see acts that included Sean Combs, 50 Cent, Fabolous, Lil' Kim, Nas, Nelly and Sean Paul. Organizers were desperate to avoid a meeting between former friends Eminem and Mariah Carey (who performed with Busta Rhymes). "When the staff heard Eminem was entering backstage, they whisked Mariah away where a limo was parked behind the stage waiting for her," says our spy.

A very popular brand of tarento right now is one-kyara, which stands for "one-san characters." In this case, however, "one-san," doesn't mean "young woman," but rather men who act like young women. Most of these men did not start out as talents, but rather became famous in their chosen profession and then made the leap to variety shows because of their effeminate charms. Two of the most popular one-kyara at the moment are guests on this week's edition of Beat Takeshi's art variety show "Anyone Can Be Picasso" (TV Tokyo; Friday, 10 p.m.). Shogo Kariyazaki had already been a respected and successful flower arranger (kadoka) for two decades when he became a talent in 1999. His exhibitions attract thousands of fans, most of whom tend to be middle-aged women. On "Picasso," he lets cameras into his "gorgeous" home, which contains 21 chandeliers, 31 large mirrors and 41 sofas. Back in the studio, he teaches Takeshi and the other guests the fundamentals of flower arranging. The other one-kyara guest, Kaba-chan, is a successful choreographer, mostly for idol singers. He himself started out with a backup dance group called dos. When the group broke up he became a freelance dance designer for performers like SMAP, Namie Amuro, Tomomi Kahala and Max. On "Picasso" he does a solo dance performance to Mariah Carey's "Emotions" and then choreographs a dance number for everyone in the studio.

Diddy, Jay-Z, Susan Sarandon Rally Against New York Drug Laws
New York - Russell Simmons and friends such as Susan Sarandon, P. Diddy, Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Fat Joe, Tim Robbins, Dead Prez and Dame Dash made their voices heard Wednesday (June 4) at City Hall, where they rallied against New York state's strict drug sentencing laws. "When I was younger, I would see kids get caught with an ounce [of narcotics] and do 10, 15 years," Dash said. "I never understood that. I don't think they deserve 10, 15 years. There's a lot of other things that need to be addressed at that time to make the person a better individual and make them evolve as a better human being, rather than come out [of jail] bitter." "The laws aren't fair," said Jay-Z as he made his way to the stage. "I personally know a lot of people that's locked up unjustly and unfairly. [The MCs] have got the streets, so we gotta come out here and show our support, our strong voice." Diddy said rappers should pay especially close attention to the state's Rockefeller drug laws - enacted in 1973 when Nelson Rockefeller was governor - because of the enormous impact they've had on the hip-hop community. "This law has affected hip-hop, our families, our friends, our future," Diddy said backstage. "Ninety-six percent of the people incarcerated by this law are minorities. It's one of the most unjust laws in history. "The money it cost to incarcerate these people and keep them housed in jail can be used for our kids to get educated," he added. "We're using all this money to lock up people who are nonviolent criminals, who basically made a f---ed up mistake. Everybody deserves a second chance. You don't get a second chance with the Rockefeller drug law. You get sentenced and there ain't no turning back." The effects of the Rockefeller laws also have an impact on the rest of society, actor Tim Robbins said. He surmised that putting nonviolent criminals in jail with violent criminals only makes them worse when they are eventually released. "You gotta keep putting the pressure on," he said. "This is about removing Draconian drug laws that are targeting [people] in a racial way." Robbins' mate, Sarandon, wanted to clarify that Simmons and company were not saying it's OK to be caught with narcotics, but rather that fairer sentences are needed. "Judges should have the autonomy to make decisions," she said. "It's a glitch that's existed for years and needs to be dropped so that we can save whole generations. The problem with trying to change this kind of policy is that the politicians don't want to be perceived as being soft on drugs. We have to give them the facts so they can do something more constructive. But most people know it's not working, it's just the people [the laws] effect are voiceless people. We have to change that." The rally's leading voice said he was pleased with the strong turnout, but that he did not consider it a victory. "There's no success until the drug laws are repealed," said Simmons. "The governor has made verbal proposals we think are worth fighting for. When we see it in the form of a bill we'll see it's serious. It's been dialogue for 30 years. We need more than dialogue, we need action. With the people's support, the politicians can get work done." Simmons, who a few weeks ago gave New York's governor until Wednesday to repeal the laws, said Gov. George Pataki has three more weeks until he and his coalition take more action. -Shaheem Reid

Bone Crusher Raps About Mariah's Sex Appeal, Talks Up His Own
Bone Crusher needs to bone up on his Guy catalog. He and Jermaine Dupri recently recorded a remix of Mariah Carey's "The One" where JD, who also produced the track, incorporated one of the famed R&B group's old songs. However, the big man from ATL cannot remember which one. "It's a sample from a Guy record," Bone said on Monday, trying to think. "It's a sample from them, a slow song. I'm trying to think which one it is. It ain't 'Piece of My Love.' It might be 'Let's Chill.' I don't know for sure. You gonna have me thinking about it all day." He was, however, very clear about his own part in the song. "I go in, do a session, it takes me five minutes to write a rap. I do a verse and dip. [On my verse in the song] I'm talking about Mariah - how fantastically sexy she is." The Bone and Jermaine Dupri remix of "The One" was recorded for a reissue of Mariah Carey's Charmbracelet, which is due this summer. The previous night, Bone had a chance to hang out with the alluring singer at Busta Rhymes' New York birthday party, which was also attended by Da Brat and E-40, with whom he just made a record as well. -Shaheem Reid

J-Lo's Career-Maker With Ja Rule Almost Didn't Happen
By Roger Friedman
Jennifer Lopez's career-making record, her remixed version of "I'm Real" with rapper Ja Rule, almost never happened. In court testimony during the contentious lawsuit which TVT Records recently won against Def Jam, some interesting tidbits spilled out. They should of most interest, in fact, to Mariah Carey. I'll tell you why. Lopez, it was revealed in the last year or so, was actually given the "I'm Real" music from Carey's work-in-progress Glitter album by Sony's then chief Tommy Mottola. This caused no end of trouble for Carey, who had to scramble and re-record a single when she realized her idea had been pilfered. In an interview last year, Ja Rule's manager/producer Irv Gotti revealed that Mottola had asked him to make the Lopez record. But what's coming out now is that other forces almost halted Mottola's plan. In court two months ago, Def Jam president Lyor Cohen revealed that he had tried to put a stop to Ja Rule working with Lopez when he found out the project was moving ahead. "Irv in the middle of [recording a] Ja Rule album went and was asked to do a record for J-Lo. And then he put Ja Rule on it, stripped Ja Rule on it. And I said, you know, this could be devastating to our release. I don't think you should do this. He went ahead and did it anyhow. I did send Epic [J-Lo's label, overseen by Mottola] a letter not to allow them to do it." Ultimately, pressure was brought to bear on all parties, presumably by Mottola, to let the Ja Rule/Lopez track proceed. The rest is history: The remixed version of "I'm Real" was a smash No. 1 hit in 2001. Carey, who'd recorded her own track with Ja Rule, had to scrap everything she'd done at the last minute. But it's not like Ja Rule comes out of the TVT/Universal trial with his head held high. Rapper DMX might like to know that Ja Rule had plans for him, according to Cohen. In his testimony, Cohen recalls that Ja Rule asked for the same release date for his album as DMX's new album. Both acts record for Def Jam... Why? "So he could sell more records than DMX," Cohen says, "and almost squash the beef of who is more popular." Nice, huh? There's more from the TVT/Universal lawsuit, in which TVT was awarded $132 million in damages. Half of those damages were assigned personally to Cohen, who seemed incoherent during much of the testimony. More tomorrow...

'Zoo' Carey-ed away
By Dan Aquilante
At radio station Z-100's summer kick-off concert "Zootopia," the order of the lineup was inconsequential. The brightest stars of Sunday's variety show were easily Boston bad boys Aerosmith and New York cutie Mariah Carey. Their sets were easily as the best of the 5-hour-plus, 17-act bill in terms of material, stage excitement and musical performance. Carey looked terrific and even pointed it out to the crowd. "Do you love the ensemble?" she asked with a runway spin. In hot pants, a black bra and a small vest, what was there not to like? The singer worked it with femme rapper Da Brat and later with Busta Rhymes. But where Carey displayed the depth of her ability as a show woman was on the ballad "Bring On the Heartbreak." Carey - who's had her troubles over the last couple of years - drew on her experiences and made the song breathe, hitting notes that sent shivers up your spine and others so high only dogs could hear them.

Mariah,'Zootopia' article in Billboard Magazine
New York top-40 powerhouse WHTZ (Z100) celebrated its 20th birthday last night (June 1) at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., but it was Mariah Carey who was the belle of the ball. Z100's annual Zootopia summer concert stretched almost six hours into a chilly New Jersey night. The show featured 17 scheduled performances, surprise guests, and a special presentation to Carey of the first "Z100 Achievement in New York Music Award."Before the big stadium crowd, Carey professed her delight at being "the first person to win this award." Her acceptance was followed immediately by a performance by Kelly Clarkson, who blurred the distinction between budding star and adoring fan. The "America Idol" winner gushed repeatedly about Carey, her obvious stylistic inspiration. "That's my first time to be in the same area with her," Clarkson told the crowd. Carey later returned to perform, bringing out surprise guests Busta Rhymes and the Flipmode Squad for the finale of her set. Billboard Magazine - Ken Schlager & Chuck Taylor

Mariah Wants To Design Sexy Women's Golf Clothes
The New York Post reports Mariah Carey recently told Gina D of Blink 102.7 FM that she wants to design her own line of women's golf clothes. "I wasn't about to wear some golf shirt with a collar," Carey said in regards to a recent visit to a golf course where she was asked to comply with their dress code mandating a collared shirt. "I went out on the links in 3-inch high heels and barely anything on and they didn't mind. I'm now seriously contemplating designing sexy women's golf clothes. I need some clothes to wear on the links."

Mariah show on 1027blink?
Mariah Carey could be gearing up for a new radio show that would air on 1027blink, the former WNEW (102.7 FM). Nothing is official yet, and no one is commenting, but Carey was spotted having lunch at the Brooklyn Diner over on 57th St. the other day just before she was scheduled to meet with the 1027blink powers-that-be about getting her own show on the station. There's been a lot of speculation for a while now that Carey will do a radio show, but nothing's been formalized yet.
