Here is a transcript of Mariah on capital radio last night: Mariah Carey Exclusive Mariah Carey chats about her amazing career to date and what she does with all those awards! You've just been voted the best vocalist of the past two decades! How did that come about? It was Blender Magazine and MTV 2 who did the contest. They told me I was in the top five and asked me to tape a 'Thank you' just incase I was number one - and it was! I was really happy, really proud and really excited. And it was voted on by the fans, so I have to thank them for that. How do you feel about it? I am very grateful for that type of statement, but I can't really say that I feel that I own that title by any means. I feel that I do what I do, and I'm blessed to have the gift of music. But there are some phenomenal singers out there that I have to always give it up to. Who would you say is your favourite vocalist of all time? It's really hard. Of course Stevie Wonder is always my favourite all around artist. But I'm also very inspired by somebody like Karen Clark, who's a gospel artist. I listen to her a lot, and I listen to a lot of Venessa Bell Armstrong. Mini Riberton, I've loved since I was little. There's so many - Aretha Franklin is another - but there's too many to name, I'd be leaving people out. You have won so many awards over your career to date - what do you do with all of them? I have these antique award cases that my decorator got me. They mean a lot to me because many of them represent fans voting, and that's what it's all about to me. The awards are for lots of different genres of music, and as a mixed-race person, to cross so many different boundaries really means a lot to me. You've also just got your 100th certification. Just explain what that means? When your record goes gold, which is a different number in each country, you get a certification - a gold certification. When it goes platinum, you get another certification, and so on and so forth. So, it means I've just got my 100th with 'Charm Bracelet'. The RIAA, the organisation monitors, gave me this blue diamond award, which I think is the first year they have given it out, and we had a fabulous party in LA, which was really fun. I was very grateful because 'Charm Bracelet' the album is very personal to me, and if it's not my best album, it's definitely in the top two because it's one of the most honest records I've ever made. That and 'Butterfly' epitomise who I am as an artist. Your mother was an opera singer. What did you learn from her about music? She taught me how to harmonise, and a lot about breathing control. But I think the main contribution that she made was teaching me to believe in myself. Your voice stretches over an amazing five octaves. How do you go about hitting those notes? It's just a feel thing. When I'm feeling it I know I can do it, if not I'll take it down low, but that's the beauty of singing. What has been the high point for Mariah Carey so far? There have been so many moments that were really high points, but I didn't get to soak them in and enjoy them. This year - particularly with the blue diamond award - has been incredible for me so far. I also just got a Soul Train lifetime achievement award, which was really cool. It did seem a little early to be getting that, but it was still amazing! What's next for Mariah Carey? I look at every day as a new creative moment. There's a lot of things that I'm doing that aren't necessarily music related, which I'm keeping to myself for the moment. As an artist there are a lot of contributions I can make that might make a difference - the charity work that I do is very important to me. On September 11th you dedicated 'Never Too Far Away' and 'Hero' to the firemen in New York. Tell us about that? I'm from New York and still live there, and my view used to be of the Twin Towers. And now I look out of my window and it's just void. I think all New Yorkers came together on that day, and I really felt that the firemen and the victims' families need a pick-me-up, so I went to Ground Zero and did that type of thing. Let's talk about the Congretional Award of Honour that was handed to you for your contribution to youth work and non-profit organisations... That was totally shocking to me. It's nice, but I don't do these charitable things to get accolades, I do it because it really means something to people. Particularly if you're working with young people and you can have a positive impact on their lives, it's really important to do. Any plans for a UK tour in the near future? I'm definitely coming back to the UK, probably in October. I haven't released any dates yet, but I do know that I will be here. The tour for the 'Charm Bracelet' album is going to be very different for me than the other things I've done because it is such a personal record. You've collaborated with a host of top artists - how do you decide who's next? It's usually inspired by the track or the record. I don't know who's next, it just sort of happens! Listen to a clip. | EU plans major music and movie piracy confab
BRUSSELS -- Measures to combat music and movie piracy will be discussed by ministers, officials, academics and executives at a conference April 7-8 in Athens. The Greek government, which currently holds the rotating six-month presidency of the European Union, said it wants to determine the instruments available to the EU to stamp out the rampant illegal copying that the cinema and music industries claim is decimating them. The Culture, Copyright and Information Society conference will be hosted by Greek Culture Minister Evangelos Venizelos and will feature officials from EU governments, the European Commission and the World Intellectual Property Organization as well as university professors, lawyers and representatives from the music and movie industries. The delegates will address whether the new file-sharing technologies make copyright protection irrelevant. Us Weekly reports Mariah Carey recently was running late for a taping of Top of the Pops in London, and was forced to leave a pal's place early where she was scheduled to eat dinner. A source said "when the show finished at about 10 PM, her driver took Mariah and her chef round to the friend's house." They group then went to a local Tesco grocery store, where they bought a few ingredients for the chicken dish Carey's chef made. | Mariah's antics in England!
Oh my god! This visit is going so well for Mariah and her UK fans! Early Wed morning she arrived at 4:00am and had photos taken with fans and signed autographs. The mariahcareyuk.com team took the opportunity to present Mariah with a book illustrating our recent reluanch with all the cartoons. Mariah said it sounded cool and she wanted to read it properly. Wed afternoon we saw her leave her London hotel to go to the Graham Norton show. Her ensemble was very appropriate for Graham Norton's camp show! She posed for the many press members and then went on to sign autographs again. It was really cool because there were some fans who hadn't seen Mariah before and they were very excited. There should be some excellent fan photos from this time at the hotel. Mariah spotted two of our team members and they got to ask her if she had a chance to read the book we gave her in the early hours of the morning. She said "Yes! I love it, it's great!" so we we're all real happy Mariah had the chance to see the work we've done on the new design and that she commented on it! We spoke with a fan who went to the Graham Norton show and they said Mariah was the sole guest and performed Through The Rain and Boy (I Need You). At one point Graham presented Mariah with a music box and she said it was cute but then she opened to reveal an unexpected surprise! For another part of the show Mariah had to throw a dart at a board with fans' pictures on from all over Europe. The one the dart landed on Mariah phoned to say hi! Mariah impressed Graham immensley by recognising and naming several of the fans featured on the board! Graham had to assure the audience that it wasn't fixed. It just shows that Mariah truly loves her fans and remembers faces! Thursday Mariah leaves Claridges at 1pm to pre-record an interview with Capital FM and then she will record a Top Of The Pops performance in the early evening. Mariah is expected to leave the hotel between 12pm and 2pm today to record the Capital Radio interview. Mariah will be doing interviews on friday for Galaxy / Choice and Radio 1. She will be at Radio 1 for around 3pm to do the entertainment news segment. She will be leaving her hotel to go to do the interviews around 11.30am. My contact told me that for the US, they WON'T be any commercial release of IKWYW as a single BUT there WILL BE a Charmbracelet special edition out soon. French will have a new special edition of Charmbracelet. It will have 16 songs including i know what you want. The album will be out april 15th. The same day I know what you want will also be released as a single here ! Finaly Ado FM (french Hip Hop radio) is having a contest to win tickets to see Mariah in Cannes next week while she will record Eurobest. Eurobest will be broadcast in 10 countries in Europe. Undercover.com.au reports Sydney based R'n'B act Disco Montego have been given the task of creating a remix for Mariah Carey's single 'Boy (I Need You)' featuring Cam'ron. It looks as though there are no plans for BMG to release "I Know What You Want" as a commercial single in the USA. FMQB.COM writes "...haven't we learned anything from Island/Def Jam and RCA/J's combined effort on the Busta Rymes & Mariah Carey? Radio doesn't care about singles and record companies care only about moving albums, so the choice should be clear...you may or may not get worked on it but we're tipping you to it now." She's looking sexy and feeling flirty and "Extra" caught Mariah Carey flaunting some form fitting flower power. It was all sunflowers and butterflies, sixties concert style, for Mariah Carey as a crowd of adoring fans watched her "Bringing on the Heartbreak" during the making of her newest music video in Los Angeles. "Bringing on the Heartbreak" from Mariah's "Charm Bracelet" album, even brought out April Playboy cover girl Carmen Electra to watch her own lead guitar player, Dave Navarro, on stage. Carmen says, "We're kind of homebodies. So this is kind of a big night out, cause it's like an actual concert." And what's a concert without a limo driver? | Bringin' On The Heartbreak video synopsis
My friends Sabrina and Courtney went to the video shoot (like I said before) and they ended up getting some security passes from Michael. Anyway, while they were backstage... Sabrina found a program for the video and asked if she could have it. Inside was a written synopsis (written by the director, Sanaa Hamri) of the entire video! Okay, I *DONT* have it word for word because she just read it to me over the phone, but let me put everyone's mind at ease and say it's not merely a live video! Here's what I remember from the summary. Of course the video is based on the edgy, dark rock vibe of The Rose, and Sanaa wanted Mariah to command the stage with mature, sultry, sexy movements ala Bette Midler. The video starts out with Mariah and her lover lying on a bed in a dark room with candles lit, the sheets tangled around them. I think there's probably a little physical contact and then Mariah gets up and walks over to a grand piano which is placed in the corner of the room and starts to play. The scene is flash-forwarded to a dark, solemn hallway where Mariah is walking and singing to herself. (remember, this is brief and probably not 100% accurate) One of the main points of this video is to portray the INTENSE relationship that Mariah has with her fans. Sanaa had written about how the hysteria and connection Mariah's fans experience around her is very rare and almost comparable to Beatle-mania. So Sanaa wanted to play up on that and try to capture the intensity and beauty of this relationship with real-life scenes of Mariah interacting with her true fans. These scenes are placed in the video in contrast to the intimate, personal scenes Mariah has with her lover... to try to make the point that he is probably the only one who REALLY knows and understands her... in a way entirely separate from her fame. The next scene is a phonebooth scene that is supposed to be reminiscant of an old Italian film scene. Mariah is in the booth and tries to make a call, probably to her lover who she has obviously parted ways with, but nobody answers. Flash forward and Mariah is landing by helicopter on top of the roof of the arena she will be performing at. The performance scene starts and once again the relationship between Mariah and her fans is portrayed as the camera zooms in on a young girl with a very sad expression. She stares off into space, somewhat lost until she realizes Mariah is making eye contact with her and upon realizing the connection, her face is lit in a bright smile. The entire time, the man from the first scene of the video is standing in the shadows of the stage watching her intently. Dave Navarro does a solo scene too! Okay, that's all I really remember... but from hearing this, I can't WAIT to see this video! It sounds like it's going to dark, edgy and artistic.... and that's exactly what the song needs. | Alex's awesome night in LA
damn i had so much fun last night, it was awesome, well....i had to wait in a line outside the auditorium for about 3hrs until they let us in, and then after they let us in...we sat down in a concert like set...i was about 8 rows away from the stage, and then we waited for another 2-3hrs, and then finally mc came out!, she came out and was being interviewed by abuncha people, but we couldn't hear anything, and then she grabbed the mic and then said "hey thanks for coming out...im gonna go change into another ensemble alright"?, and then...we had to wait for like 2hrs, and then finally the stage was being set up, the background of the stage was a giant butterfly made up of neon lights..and a giant sunflower under it, and then she was gettin ready...., she sang both like 4 times, and she was wearing a burgundy-ish dress that was super duper low cut and super duper short, the video is supposed to look like a concert, and in between every take..she would talk to the fans and sing a few bits of acapellas, it was awesome, she gave the mic to a girl in the audience..and that girl started singing Vision of Love...and she was sooooo good, as she was singing it..the band started to join in and give her som music, she told everyon that she had signed arecord deal in august, she was sooo good, everyone screamed, my ears were pierced by the people around me screaming, it was soo cool...because i went there not even expecting mc to be there, and they gave out a bucnha sunflowers to the audience to hold, the fireworks are when the song builds up and gets louder, when she's screaming "you got the best of me", she walks up next to the guitarist and waves her lttle scarf thing around, and she kinda acts sexy, oh yea....and she sang part of a song that goes "some say love...it is a river". | Just got back from the BOTH video shoot
I'll tell yall more details tomorrow cuz I'm sooooo tired but I'll just say that Mariah is VERY beautiful. She's wearing a red dress with this long, thin gray scarf with this zebra print, sheer jacket over it. In the middle of the performance she throws the jacket into the audience and some guy walked away with it it Lucky guy but also that really screwed up the video people cuz they needed everything to be consistent. Anyway, there was a lot of down time where Mariah just talked with the audience. Some girl sang VOL BEAUTIFULLY and Mariah was really feelin it. Another girl said her prom is coming up and that she really likes Mariah's dress and she wants it then Mariah goes "What size are you?" "Size 0" "Then honey, you ain't gonna fit into it" Then someone else said they were a size 3 then she said the dress only comes in size 2 or 4 and it ain't either of those either! But then later she said if you really want it, she can have it. LUCKY GIRL. MC also sang parts of CTTA, MIH, Lullaby, and some other song. She hit a couple of high notes too and the crowd went wild. Dave Navarro was there in the video and him and Mariah were vibing a lot. Very hot. And Randy Jackson was of course there, in the video. Carmen Electra was there but not in the video, just to support her fiance probably. Like I said I'll write more tomorrow and some other people can fill in some other cool details. BTW, it's 3 AM right now and I left early. They were setting up for another camera angle and people were saying they'd stay till probably 4 or 5. Crazy. Anyway, good night!!!!!!!! I gotta get me some sleep! One other thing... Oh yeah wanted to add that the whole thing is NOT live. They said something about a phonebooth scene? I don't know what that's about but that obviously answers our question. Also, her hair is very curly. More curly than TTR video. She just let it go, there was the fake wind blowing in her hair. The Automatic Princess mystery
We all saw that Mariah wore a necklace and a kind of logo on her skirt in the sneak peak of ET and on the pictures from Mariah at the Los Angeles Lakers' game. Also Mariah said "My stylist BLAIR and I went for a Harley-Davidson-inspired ensemble plus the Automatic Princess, which you will be seeing more of later on,". | Hollywood club closed for fire code violations
LOS ANGELES - Fire inspectors closed a Hollywood nightclub early Thursday after finding it was overcrowded and one of the emergency exits chained, authorities said. Fire officials visited The Belmont Club just after midnight and found that there were too many people inside. The bar is permitted to have 149 patrons, but when investigators arrived they found 211 people, said fire Inspector Kendall McCarthy. "The exiting was not proper either and so we had to close it down," McCarthy said. Television and radio station reports said that there was a special event at the club and was attended by such celebrities as singer Mariah Carey, actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The Belmont is the second club to be closed by fire inspectors this week. Club Soho was shut down Sunday for overcrowding and a chained exit. Rather, the two friends hooked up to work together for the second time on Busta's upcoming video for his new single, "I Know What You Want," from his Take It Off album. "It's an homage to a JET LI movie 'The Defender,' where he has to protect his friend's girlfriend and there is an attraction between them." Rapper Busta Rhymes, the Flipmode Squad, and Mariah Carey were joined by actor Ving Rhames in Los Angeles earlier this week to shoot the video for Rhymes's latest single, "I Know What You Want." The clip, which was directed by Chris Robinson and Rhymes, was inspired by comic-book artist Frank Miller and his most extensive work, Sin City. In the video, Busta Rhymes and the Flipmode Squad are called upon to protect Rhames's wife, Eva, while Rhames is away on a dangerous mission, and sparks fly between Rhymes and Eva.
