Mariah carries newfound confidence
Pop diva says her breakdown is behind her, returns to stage
By Alan Sculley For FLORIDA TODAY
Mariah Carey makes no secret that she's tired of talking about her much-discussed emotional collapse of 2001.
"Well, I feel like I've gone over this on 'Oprah,' on 'Dateline,' on this one and that, so I'd rather not talk about it yet again,
because it was two years ago," Carey said.
Still, there's no getting around the topic, because it relates strongly to where Carey is in her life today. As even she points out, some songs (most notably "Through The Rain") on her current CD, "Charmbracelet," reflect on the changes that have occurred in her life since that time.
"That's why 'Charmbracelet' is so important to me, because it marks a place in my life where I learned to take the initiative, to take care of myself more as a human being, not just as a product," Carey, 33, said.
Throughout the 1990s, Carey's career had seemed charmed, to say the least. Signed at age 18 to Columbia Records, the Long Island native blasted onto the scene with a 1990 self-titled CD that sold more than 9 million copies in the United States alone.
Overall, she scored four chart-topping albums, had 15 No. 1 singles and worldwide record sales of 150 million, enough to make her pop's diva of the decade.
Plus, she married her boss, Columbia Records president Tommy Motolla, in 1993.
But by the late 1990s, Carey was heading into choppier career waters. First came her breakup with Mottola in 1997. Her relationship with Columbia eroded from there.
"It felt really hard and really impossible to stay there and still thrive," Carey said.
So Carey moved on, signing with great fanfare an $80 million deal with Virgin Records in 2001. For that label, she recorded "Glitter," a soundtrack album to the movie of the same title. The film flopped, and the soundtrack suffered as well, selling just 557,000 copies in the United States (Carey said worldwide sales were 2 million). Some started questioning Carey's future in music.
Then things went from bad to ugly.
In 2001, as she was promoting "Glitter" and dealing with its much-publicized failure, Carey began to show signs of emotional overload. She exhibited odd behavior during appearances on MTV's "Total Request Live" and at a record store signing in Garden City, N.Y.
Then, July 25, came the real meltdown. That day, Carey trashed her room at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in Manhattan.
She was taken from the hotel to her mother's home in Westchester County, where she collapsed. Her mother called for an ambulance for her daughter, who then checked herself in to Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Conn.
Several news outlets reported that Carey had attempted suicide, something Carey has vigorously denied.
In Carey's view, her breakdown was simply a product of overwork as she sought to establish herself apart from Columbia and Mottola. She said the relentless pace of public appearances and travel left her getting only three hours of sleep a night. The exhaustion and frustration, she said, finally caused her to break.
"At that point in my life, I was really spiraling trying to keep everything together," she said. "I didn't have the right team around me. I was just neglecting myself. It was just like not treating myself as a human being with the proper respect that one would treat another human being."
Carey emerged from her very public crash determined to put her life and her career back on track.
And in many respects, she has come out smelling like a rose. Virgin Records, stung by the disappointing performance of "Glitter," bought out Carey's contract, reportedly paying her $28 million.
Then Carey signed with Island Def Jam, netting what's been reported as a $20 million deal for three albums.
"Charmbracelet," her first release under the Island/Def Jam deal, however, has delivered mixed results.
Released in December, its first two singles, "Through The Rain" and "Boy (I Need You)," fizzled. Sales of the CD, however, have topped 1 million.
And now "Charmbracelet" is getting a second life.
Carey released a new version of the CD on July 29, adding four tracks, including her recent Top 5 hit duet with Busta Rhymes, "I Know What You Want." The song initially appeared only on Rhymes' CD, "It Ain't Safe No More."
Still, Carey's level of popularity remains under question, especially in light of her decision this spring to downsize a U.S. tour of arenas and instead play theaters.
The singer, though, said her decision to play smaller venues was not based on slow ticket sales. Instead, it's a sign of her independence as an artist, as she chose to play venues where she could interact with her audience.
"I feel like at this point in my life, I'm in control," Carey said. "I'm in the driver's seat, and I can dictate what I want to do.
"So if I want to do something that showcases my talent as a singer and songwriter, yet also lets me have my personality, fun moments and the more theatrical stuff and the audience interaction, it's just the perfect thing for me to do."

COMEBACK TOUR
After Several Setbacks, Mariah Carey Returns With Emphasis on Fans
By Bill Dean - The Ledger
She's one of the most successful singers in the world. She's had 15 No. 1 hits -- more than any other female singer.
And with sales of 150 million albums in the 1990s, Mariah Carey's reign was solidified when Billboard magazine named her "Artist of the Decade" for the 1990s.
That was before her brand of dance pop gave way to harder-edged sounds from such newcomers as Christina Aguilera, however.
And it was before "Glitter," the failed 2001 album and film that preceded her public dumping by EMI Records -- which paid her a reported $28 million simply to leave.
And it was before an emotional breakdown in 2001, which followed a public meltdown on MTV's "Total Request Live" and climaxed with her checking into a hospital.
But now Carey, whose current tour brings her to Orlando on Saturday and Tampa on Wednesday, is literally on the comeback trail and taking her case straight to fans.
Her new record label, Island/Def Jam, released Carey's most recent album "Charmbracelet" last December.
While it didn't return her to the days of "Daydream," the 1995 smash that sold more than 9 million copies, "Charmbracelet" did enter Billboard's Hot 200 albums chart at No. 3 and has since sold more than 1 million copies.
And though it didn't win unanimously glowing reviews, "Charmbracelet" didn't receive the near-universal bashing that "Glitter" did.
Carey recorded the album as the next step in her evolution as a singer, she told The New York Times, rather than as a spiteful response to her exit from EMI.
"I didn't do it to answer people, or to justify my validity as an artist," Carey said. "It really was just about an emotional outlet for me."
While Carey's current tour has her playing mostly theaters as opposed to arenas, it returns her to a medium long considered among her best, and in venues where the pressure is less than it would be in cavernous coliseums.
"This particular tour, being in the more intimate venues, does something different to me as an artist and as a performer, rather than being in a vacuous arena," Carey told The Hollywood Reporter.
"I can see people in row 15 singing the lyrics to an obscure album cut and see people with fan-club shirts 20 rows back," she said. "That makes me feel good."
Though just 33 years old, Carey's career has already become one of the more storied in pop/rock.
She moved to New York City at age 17 to pursue a music career, and sang backup for such singers as Brenda K. Starr.
In a story repeated so often it has become part of modern-pop lore, Starr passed Carey's demo tape on to Sony Music executive Tommy Mottola at a party -- who was so impressed upon hearing it on the way home that he ordered his limo driver to return to the party so he could meet Carey.
Mottola later signed Carey to two contracts: the first to record albums for Columbia Records, the second to be his wife.
Years later, after Carey had surpassed Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Madonna in her number of songs to hit No. 1, both unions were over.
Now in the middle of what may be her most soul-satisfying comeback, Carey has learned to balance such amazing highs with inevitable lows.
"The way I look at it is, you take the good with the bad," she told Maxim magazine, in a September cover story.
"We're all human and we all go through good times and difficult times.
"But in the end it's all about getting up the right way. My song `Through the Rain' is about going through all of these things."

Mariah Carey gets her act together with help from fans
By MICHAEL D. CLARK - Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle
The key to "divadom" is the ability to reinvent oneself. Prissy, trampy, down-to-earth and unapproachable are just some of the personas Mariah Carey used to become the most successful female artist of the ’90s. Carey had 15 No. 1 singles and pushed past the Beatles with the most cumulative weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with dance hits like Emotion and Heartbreaker.
Two years ago, the entertainer took on a role most people would avoid: woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Weeks before the release of her movie Glitter and its accompanying soundtrack, Carey suffered a meltdown that many thought would be a career-killer.
These days Carey is working on a new persona: survivor. In December she released Charmbracelet, her first record for Island / Def Jam Records; it’s sold more than 500,000 copies.
Currently on her first tour in three years, which includes a stop tonight at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Carey took a few minutes to talk about performing and upcoming projects, as well as to answer questions about "the episode."
Q: What tidbits can you give away to tease fans about what to expect from your tour?
A: One of the cool things was being able to have fans actually vote for their favorite songs on my Web site (www.mariahcarey.com). That is the interactive portion of my show.
Also, in each city there will be a list of the top four songs that aren’t making it onto the list. The fans in that city (at the show) will get to vote, and then I’ll do that song specifically that night.
Q: Have you been surprised at what’s been requested?
A: I knew a lot of the songs would get picked, like Heartbreaker, Fantasy and Hero, but I didn't realize that Hero would win by such a landslide. It's unbelievable.
Q: What about the first couple of albums, 1990's self-titled debut and 1991's Emotions? Do those songs get as many votes as something from Charmbracelet?
A: It's funny. Charmbracelet gets a lot of votes for different album cuts. Like I Know What You Want with Busta Rhymes gets a lot of votes, as well as the really big hits. But I can't do every song that's getting voted for, so we're getting pretty specific.
Q: Were you concerned that you were going to lose momentum because there was such a lull between when Charmbracelet was released and when you went out on tour?
A: Not really. I don't even really think about stuff like that, to be honest with you. I just sort of go about my business and do what I want (laughs).
Q: Are you enjoying being out live like this? You've done a lot of studio work and behind-the-camera stuff. How does moving around this much compare to that?
A: I think it's about the same amount of work, but it's almost more enjoyable in some ways because you get to be right there with the fans. That's something that's irreplaceable. This tour is so different because it is very intimate. By the end of the show you know all the singers and the dancers and the band members. We just have a good time. I kind of take one day at a time. I'm that kind of person.
Q: Do you feel that whatever happened a few years ago and whatever troubles you were having, are they gone from your life now?
A: You know what? It's gone for me, but people still want to ask about it. It's like being asked the question, "When did you first know you wanted to be a singer?" It's that kind of tedious stuff, but what are you going to do? That's the way it is.
Q: In your own mind, is it gone? You have a new record label, new movie opportunities, a big tour and the success of Charmbracelet. Does it feel like a new beginning?
A: I would say Charmbracelet was definitely a new beginning for me, especially because it's such a personal album. It's sort of like a new beginning, but getting back to basics as well.
Q: What about your new movie, The Sweet Science?
A: It's about women boxing. I play a boxer. I'm not supposed to tell that much about it, but it's being cast right now. It's still in the beginning stages.
Q: It sounds like a lot of time in the gym following the tour.
A: Yes. Exactly. You got that right. (laughs)

Important mission
You all probably read the article from Malcolm Mayhew Star-Telegram Staff Writer, if not, here's the link:
http://www.dfw.com/mld/startelegram/living/6628795.htm
We must do something about that and here's a way for payback:
As this guy wrote this: "including Can't Take That Away, a new ballad.", we can show to his newspaper how amateurish his work is.  So, we need to e-mail here: Craig Diebel - General Manager: cdiebel@knightridder.com and here:
http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/contact_us/feedback/
In the subject of the e-mail we must write: "The lack of research of Malcolm Mayhew" or "Malcolm Mayhew, an amateur".
We must write the e-mail without being rude or offensive, but showing calmly the lack of research of Malcolm Mayhew and show that he did not like Mariah from the start.
I know you have all enough ideas without being rude and not critisize the article, only the lack of research of the guy they paid to review the concert.  Also only e-mail with .com or .net or .org e-mails, like hotmail.com, yahoo.com, aol.com etc...
Please spread the word.  Thanks guys.  Fan power.

A beautiful fan story
Here's what I read on MariahCarey.com message board:

"I cant believe this all just happened to me! I flew to Phoenix with my mom to see Mariah's concert. We checked into our hotel and told the guy that we were in town to see Mariah Carey. He turned red and told me "you might be a lot closer than you might think"... I started freaking out!!!
Then I saw Blair outside the hotel! I took a pic with her and she told me that Mariuah would be coming out at around 5:30.
So... I waited for hours, and she came out and signed my MAXIM magazine and took a pic with me! She looked perfect in person; it was amazing! And then the concert was incredible..and so was the meet and greet! I am still trying to comprehend everything that happened!!!"

Mariah Carries On
By Chris Gardner
Los Angeles (Hollywood Reporter) - Mariah Carey was riding high last week after she completed two shows at the Universal Amphitheater near Hollywood.
"It was a very feisty crowd tonight," Carey said Thursday, perched on a velvet couch in her dressing room after the second night. "Monday night was a fun crowd as well, so I was expecting more of an industry crowd tonight, and I was pleasantly surprised. Even though there were some industry people here, there were still so many real fans that it was a great show -- it didn't feel so corporate."
The songbird was in the midst of her first U.S. tour in three years (with 11 dates left to go), and thanks to the scaled-back settings, she couldn't be happier.
"I am having so much more fun onstage this time around because of the combination of being able to do the old songs, showcasing the new material and the energy of the audience," said Carey, who had just been belting out everything from "Hero" to "Honey" for ticket-holders including Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and Prince, who also caught a piece of Monday's show.
"This particular tour, being in the more intimate venues, does something different to me as an artist and as a performer, rather than being in a vacuous arena," said Carey, who scrapped initial plans for a more elaborate tour partly because of weak demand. "I can see people in row 15 singing the lyrics to an obscure album cut and see people with fan club shirts 20 rows back -- that makes me feel good."
So what does Carey think of all the star-making television vehicles such as "Idol" or "American Juniors?"
"Randy keeps me abreast of all those things," she said. "You know, whatever works. For this moment, those things are popular, so that's cool. I'm fine with that."
Carey was also upbeat about the upcoming release of "Mariah Carey -- The Remixes," a dance and workout double CD from her former label Sony.
"You get all the hip-hop versions, like 'Heartbreaker" with Missy (Elliott) and Brat and 'Thank God I Found You' with Nas and Joe, 'Honey' the So-So Def remix, but then there all the house versions with people like Junior (Vasquez)," she said. "All those records bring back memories, but they are still good today and I've always wanted to do a remix album."

Carey delivers top-notch performance
Theresa Cano - azcentral.com
The past two years may have been shaky ones for Mariah Carey but in front of a packed Dodge Theatre Saturday night, the sultry diva was nothing short of solid.
Surrounded by dancers and a circle of beefy bodyguards, Carey hit a confident stride as she walked down one of the theater’s aisles to take the stage. The noise level from her adoring, supportive fans was deafening throughout the night.
Despite a lavish stage production which included nine dancers, video snippets, oversized lounge chairs, eight costume changes, circus props and city street scene, the show never failed to showcase Carey’s famous five-octave voice first and foremost. The pop princess sounded like her hit making self of the ‘90s as she wrapped herself around one self-motivating ballad after the other.
Carey’s voice was in top-notch form throughout the 100-minute plus performance. While the setlist included a healthy number of tracks from her new album, Charmbracelet, she didn’t disappoint fans who wanted to hear her hits. ‘Dreamlover,’ ‘My All,’ ‘Make It Happen’ and ‘Heartbreaker,’ were just some of the songs that had the crowd singing along to every word.
One thing that was undeniable about the show was the dedication and love that Carey’s fans have for the artist. The audience ranged from toddlers to seniors, but Carey’s most passionate fan base seemed to be those in their early twenties to early thirties. Many in the crowd could hardly contain their excitement long before the show began and once it did, their level of enthusiasm was off the charts.
While Carey had the crowd grooving to her dance friendly hits like “Honey” and the infectious “Fantasy,” it was on the ballads where she really seemed to connect with the crowd. She sang one self-empowering song after the other with the sincerity of someone who really lived and believed in the words she was singing.
‘Can’t Take That Away,’ moved Carey to fall to her knees as she sang the song’s personal lyrics. On ‘Subtle Invitation,’ she was lowered from the ceiling on a white silken swing and gently placed atop a grand piano.
Carey’s banter seemed mostly staged, but she seemed genuinely sincere as she showered the crowd with ‘thank you’s’ and ‘I love you too’s.’ It was evident that she is aware of the fact that while she took a beating in the media during her trials and tribulations of the past two years, her fans never failed to support the beauty with the big voice.
Carey seemed to relish in the intimacy of the smaller venue. She would get a shocked look on her face when the audience would roar in approval as she sang. Mariah flashed her million dollar smile and waved continually to her adoring following.
Mariah’s four back up singers were phenomenal, especially the charismatic and uber-talented Trey Lorenz. Just as he did 11 years before on “MTV Unplugged,” Lorenz joined Carey during a stunning rendition of ‘I’ll Be There.'
Carey tapped into the emotional soul of Def Leppard’s power ballad, ‘Bringing On The Heartbreak,’ and unleashed an achingly beautiful version of the song. Finishing out the night with ‘Hero,’ Carey stood confidently and belted out the song, which reinforces the ideas of loving and believing in yourself. While it may be a personal anthem to many of those who were in attendance Saturday night, it seemed as though the song’s theme has hit home for no one more so than its singer herself.

Today's Top Story - Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is putting some rumors to rest, letting her hair down, and letting "Extra" inside her dressing room. Find out what happened behind the closed doors.
Mariah Carey is reclaiming the stage for her "Making It Happen" tour - her first in three years. Minutes after hitting the stage, a sexy Mariah invited "Extra" inside her dressing room, where she admitted she's thrilled to be back on tour and to be the current Maxim Magazine cover girl.
She says, "Yeah it was fun. Anytime I get a chance to ride around in water it's always a good thing."

Besides posing for some seriously sexy photos, the diva tells the men's magazine that she has no idea why rapper Eminem took a swipe at her in his song, "Superman." She says she knows the rapper, but the two never had any sexual encounter.
Mariah says, "There's always going to be rumors about celebrities, no matter who they are. Some of them are real; some of them are going to be fake. I can't live my life worrying about that because I've been in the public eye too long and I'm used to that."
Mariah also reveals that life with former husband Tommy Mattola taught her that record executives are brutal. But although she's learned from the past, she's not ready to get hitched anytime soon. She says, "I don't know, it depends on the person."
For now, Mariah is happily single and sweating over a new album, "Mariah Carey the Re-Mixes." She says, "Right now I'm using it for my workout because it just doesn't stop."
Kind of like Mariah herself.

Mariah Carey in Concert
By Gerry Gittelson - Staff Writer
Mariah Carey, the '90s queen of pop who remains the best-selling female performer of all time, isn't quite ready to pass the crown.
Relatively inactive as a live performer over the past three years, Carey, like all of us, has seen Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson blossom in her wake.
Nevertheless, Carey proved vital as ever during a well-received, sold-out concert at Universal Amphitheatre on Monday, the first of a two-night engagement that concludes today.
The 32-year-old New Yorker, touring in support of her newest release, "Charmbracelet," tore through a 100-minute set featuring many of her No. 1 hits such as "Vision of Love" and "Fantasy."
And while there were lots of dancers, props and video displays, Carey provided a somber theme of perseverance and faith with such spiritual selections as "Through the Rain" and the touching '"My Saving Grace."
Yes, Carey's much-publicized emotional breakdown in 2001 hasn't been forgotten. But the fact is, Carey has never looked or sounded better. Perfectly fit, tanned and sexy, Carey proved ready for action, and she certainly doesn't seem intimidated by her supposed competitors, who might have surpassed her on the sales charts -- but certainly not on stage.
Carey hit her high notes beautifully, to the delight of the mostly young, female crowd. And her between-songs banter was warm, engaging and charismatic. Carey's growth as a concert performer is especially notable because in the past, her biggest weakness might have been a mild failure to connect with audiences.
However, such shyness has disappeared. Carey was in control of the room Monday -- and Spears and company should have been there taking notes.
While Carey's peaks were mighty impressive, there were a few valleys. The performance was bit ill-paced, partly because Carey allowed her backup musicians too much of the spotlight, as she occasionally disappeared off stage for five or 10 minutes at a time.
But things remained interesting because Carey always returned in a new, wildly revealing outfit, and it was never too long before another sing-along hit such as "Hero" arrived.
Among the best moments was a wonderful version of "Bringin' on the Heartbreak," a cover of British rock band Def Leppard's early hit -- proof positive Carey is certainly more than a balladeer.
Mariah Carey is back, big-time. And her adoring, loyal fans, many of whom carried large cardboard signs welcoming her return, couldn't be happier.

Back in the light
IT'S mystifying why Mariah Carey doesn't do more live appearances. The two most defining moments in her career were live ones. Though she'd already had a string of No. 1 hits, it was her MTV Unplugged version of I'll Be There that helped make her a household name in 1992. And it was her stunning return to form singing Hero on the post-Sept 11 A Tribute To Heroes that erased much of her recent bad publicity. Forget breakdowns and contracts and bad movies; in four minutes on Sept 18, 2001, Carey reminded fans of why they fell in love with her voice in the first place. Now Carey has been touring in Japan and the US, promoting her new album, Charmbracelet. The obstacle, she says, is properly resting and taking care of her legendary five-octave voice. It makes it impossible for her to do long strings of back-to-back shows, which makes touring more expensive and logistically complicated. "I need one or two days off between shows," she says. The Tribute to Heroes benefit found her on the same bill as Bruce Springsteen, U2, Tom Petty, Neil Young and more, all still shell-shocked by the terrorist attacks. "It was a very intense moment. I live right by Ground Zero. When I was called to do the show, I said of course I would," she says.
"Hero was the song they wanted and it seemed like the most appropriate song to do. It was intense to be in that room with all those talented people for one cause." It was also the end of a dark era. A decade of hits – One Sweet Day, Butterfly, Someday, Love Takes Time – along with a marriage and a nasty divorce from record exec Tommy Mottola made her among the most famous people on the planet for reasons other than her voice. By 2001, Carey had run herself ragged and was on the brink of collapse. She made bizarre TV appearances and posted rambling notes on her website that had fans genuinely scared for her well-being. With a movie bomb in Glitter and a falling out with her record label, Carey was in the worst trouble of her career. That made it especially meaningful to her when she came out and shone. "Of course it would be a vindicating moment," she says. "It's so difficult to live in the public eye. People just believe everything they read and what they see on TV." Fans also fear that she's lost her way. She has been accused of letting others call the shots; rather than following her own instincts, at times she seems to be trying to mould herself to whatever's hot at the moment. "I don't feel that way with the Charmbracelet album at all. I have a wide variety of influences," she says. "I love hip hop music and always have. I've been doing collaborations with hip hop artistes since Old Dirty Bastard in 1996 with Fantasy. "I have the capacity to do a gospel-influenced ballad or a hip hop influenced record. I don't feel I should be limited into doing one or the other. Charmbracelet, is the closest I've gotten to pleasing both sides of the spectrum, as well as myself." It has been a prolific time for Carey, who already is in the middle of her next album, along with an album of remixes due out later this year. "I'm writing right now. The remixes are coming out regardless. That's a contractual Sony thing. So those are coming out either way," she says. "I don't know about a (new) album this year." Fans can go to her website to vote on what songs they want to hear in each city. And she has learned, she says, from the mistakes she has made in the past. "I'm in a very good space in my life," she says. "This is so much fun touring. I've learned so much about just having to slow down and take rests and stuff like that. "It's about treating myself like a human being and not just an object." Indeed Mariah's recent 10-date tour of Japan was a smash, playing to sold out audiences. To say the tour was a success would be an understatement. One had to be living in a cave to not know that Mariah Carey was in the country! Mariah received daily mention in the press there – with unanimous positive reaction to her show.
Bringin On The Heartbreak has already entered the Top 20 on both the radio airplay and video charts in Japan. Carey's concert was elaborately planned – it felt more like a Broadway musical than a concert according to observers. The press in Japan have unanimously declared her golden voice amazingly stimulating, visually stunning and utterly entertaining. THE STUFF OF LEGEND Mariah Carey's career is truly the stuff of legend. Since she began her career, Mariah has since become the best-selling female performer of all time, with an incredible 15 No. 1 singles and two Grammy Awards. Along the way she became the only artiste to top the charts in each year of the 1990s, and, with Heartbreaker, she pushed ahead of the Beatles as the artiste with the most cumulative weeks spent atop Billboards Hot 100 Singles chart.
Possessing a spectacular five-octave range, Mariah is equally at home with sweeping ballads and pop, often incorporating elements of dance and hip hop into the mix. Perhaps even more impressive, she composes all of her own material.
Mariah's new album features the songstress writing and co-producing with such A-list names as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Jermaine Dupri among others. The album, which is lyrically very personal, showcases Mariah's stunning voice, prolific songwriting and incredible versatility. This is fully evident on the first single, the sweeping epic ballad, Through The Rain which is a perfect example of what Mariah does best.
Born in Long Island, NY, as the daughter of a former opera singer and vocal coach – and named after the song They Call the Wind Mariah from the popular Lerner and Loewe musical Paint Your Wagon.
Mariah began singing at the age of four, and was writing her own songs by the time she was attending Oldfield Middle School. She moved to New York City, the day after graduating from high school. Honing her songwriting skills and lending her vocals to several local acts, she first garnered industry attention when singing backup for Brenda K. Starr, who gave Mariah's demo tape to Sony Music Entertainment chief Tommy Mottola at a party. As legend has it, Mottola played the demo on his ride home and ordered his driver to immediately return to the party so that he could meet the young singer. Soon afterwards, Mottola signed Mariah to a Columbia Records contract.
Mariah's self-titled Columbia debut, released in 1990, spawned an extraordinary four No.1 singles: Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, Someday and I Don't Wanna Cry, and led to Grammy Awards for Best New Artiste and Best Female Vocalist. The following year's album, Emotions, was another smash, with the title track scoring her fifth consecutive No.1 single and two other titles Can't Let Go and Make It Happen reaching the Top Five. Her next release, 1992s MTV Unplugged EP, scored another No.1 with her cover of the Jackson 5's I'll Be There. Music Box (1993) became her biggest seller to date, with Dreamlover and Hero again topping the charts, and was followed by 1994's Merry Christmas, which contained another hit with All I Want for Christmas is You. Daydream (1995) contained the club-friendly Fantasy, which debuted at No.1 making Mariah the second artiste in history, and the first female performer, to accomplish that feat. The follow-up single, One Sweet Day (recorded with Boyz II Men), followed suit and stayed at the top of the charts for a record 16 weeks.
Butterfly (1997) revealed an even greater hip hop flavour than its predecessor, scoring hits with Honey and My All. The following year witnessed the release of greatest hits collection No.1s, which included a new song, When You Believe (from the film The Prince of Egypt), a duet with Whitney Houston which paired the two most successful female recording artistes in pop history. Rainbow, with its chart-topping tune Heartbreaker, followed in 1999.
In 2001, Mariah signed with Virgin Records, which released Glitter, the soundtrack album to the film of the same name, with Mariah in her first lead acting role. She has also been featured in the films The Bachelor (1999) and Wisegirls (2002).
Mariah has garnered many accolades throughout her career including two Grammy Awards, eight American Music Awards, Billboard's ‘Artiste of the Decade' Award and the World Music Award for ‘World's Best Selling Female Artiste of the Millennium' to name a few. Mariah's many accomplishments and unprecedented career success stand as a testament to her creativity and talent. That they represent only the beginning is all the more impressive.

Mariah: I'm a diva
Pop superstar Mariah Carey has confessed she is a diva. The sexy singer has often faced accusations of diva-like behaviour as she rose to chart-topping success. But unlike Jennifer Lopez and many other fellow superstars, Mariah declares that the title is fitting for her - even if her definition differs to others. She says, "Everybody's a diva these days. You can be the diva of garbagewomen - it doesn't matter. It's a little bit tired. "When I was growing up, my mother was an opera singer, so I connected divas to someone who can really sing and is a bit grandiose. So I guess that would be me. But she warns fans not to believe everything they read about her; "There are rumours about how I walked into a hotel and insisted on completely redecorating a room before I stayed there. "Even funnier is that apparently I also refuse to walk on carpeting. So I guess I hover. How do people think I get from Point A to Point B?"

2nd wind for Mariah
Larry Rodgers - The Arizona Republic
It's hard to doubt Mariah Carey when she says she can't walk away from music, movies and love - even after hospitalization for exhaustion, the loss of history's biggest record contract, critical disdain for her semi-autobiographical film, Glitter, and breakups with her husband and subsequent boyfriend.
Buoyed by a new $20 million recording deal, a triple-platinum CD and a less-hectic schedule, Carey has embarked on her most extensive concert tour. The 52-date trek visits U.S. theaters through September (including Phoenix's Dodge Theatre on Saturday), then arenas and stadiums in Europe and Asia.
Positive reviews for her film role in last year's WiseGirls have encouraged the New York-born Carey to consider more acting after 2001's ill-fated Glitter.
As for romance, after the failure of her five-year marriage to recording mogul Tommy Mottola in 1998 and her breakup with boyfriend Luis Miguel, Carey, 33, says she's ready for a break.
Emerging from last year's hospitalization for what she called "complete exhaustion," the singer views her return to the stage as just what the doctor ordered.
"She has not been a (heavily) touring artist in the past," says Carey's manager, John Marx of the William Morris Agency. "She's enjoying it, and she's working more dates than she ever has."
Marx disputed reports that slow ticket sales caused Carey to downsize her U.S. shows, saying, "She was getting a lot of information from the fans, that they wanted to see her in smaller venues."
Carey recently discussed the ups and downs of her career and personal life, as well as what's on the horizon.
How are you feeling these days? Are your batteries recharged?
They have been for quite some time, thank you.
What are you doing differently to avoid exhaustion?
I kind of had to put everybody in check who was surrounding me. People had to realize that I'm a human being as well as someone who is in the public eye and a celebrity.
It's not all about working me to death, literally. It's about giving me some space, some time to actually have a couple of vacations a year, just to take a breather, which I never ever did before. I would just work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and that's not healthy for anybody.
Some people are calling your latest CD, Charmbracelet, a comeback. Do you think the reports of your recent ups and downs have been overblown?
I do look at it like it's been overblown, but if people choose to call it a comeback album, then that's fine. This album, in a lot of ways, is coming back to my roots.
You could have walked away from everything, relaxed and wealthy, before entering this new record deal. Why do it all again?
Because music is what I love, and it's hard to walk away from what you love. I do care about my fans, and I know that they wanted me to make a new record, and I wanted - and needed - to make a new record.
What approach did you take to creating Charmbracelet?
The experience of making this record was so cathartic for me. Just being honest with the lyrics and singing from my heart on songs like My Saving Grace and Sunflowers for Alfred Roy - which I wrote for my father after he passed away last year - songs that I needed to write. I needed to sing those songs, and that's why I did it.
You've said that pain sometimes produces great art. Are there songs on the new CD that reflect that?
My Saving Grace is very autobiographical. It kind of tells my whole story and how, when going through problems, I always lean on my faith and how strong an element faith is in my life.
Sunflowers for Alfred Roy is something that I wrote for my father, in honor of him. . . . He was very sick. He was in the hospital for a while, and we were there together.
We hadn't had that close of a relationship, but we got to know each other a lot better than we ever had, and I'm very grateful for that. So going through that experience helped me produce something that I feel is in honor of him.
After your experience with Glitter, how do you view the film industry? Did you get soured by the negative reviews, or are you still optimistic about working in movies?
I was just happy that I had done WiseGirls. It was an indie project that I did with Mira Sorvino and Melora Walters. It got really good reviews in the Hollywood Reporter and Variety, and we went to the Sundance Film Festival with it.
I did that against everybody's wishes, and it was just something that I did for the love of that role. I played a waitress who is a drug dealer from Staten Island, so it was completely different from the Mariah Carey image.
I think that the lesson I learned from being involved with the first movie (Glitter) was that you don't do something just because it's what everybody says you should do. You don't have to just play a singer and be in some homogenized Hollywood situation because people tell you it's the right thing to do. I learned a lesson that it's all about art and all about doing what's going to be the best thing for you as an artist, creatively.
There's been speculation that your decision to play smaller venues might be due to slow ticket sales. Could you clarify that?
In all honesty, it's going to be so much more intimate and so much easier for me, because I tend to micromanage things, and that's what can contribute to my overextending myself. I don't want to do that this time around. I don't want to be worrying about the sound man, worrying about pyro stuff. I don't want to be doing things that are not about just performing and relaxing within my performance.
My fans want to see me in this type of a setting, as opposed to an impersonal venue where they miss half of what's being said onstage and the sound is all boomy. So it's my decision to do that. I can play arenas if I want; that's not the question.
You're in your 30s now, as many of your original fans are. Do you see your concert audiences getting older?
I pretty much see all ages and all different demographics. It's cool, as a multiracial person, to be able to see all different races, creeds and colors out there.
You write most of your own material. Is that one thing that sets you apart from other "divas"?
It's something that's such a part of me that I wouldn't even feel like a whole person if I couldn't do it. It really is something that's always been a healing savior for me. When I go into the creative mode and I start writing, it takes me to another level and I feel like a totally different person. . . . So it does set me apart in that way.
You've been through a divorce and a breakup in recent years. Are you still optimistic about finding love?
Yeah, (but) I'm not obsessed with it, like the public is. Every magazine is like, "Who's so-and-so dating?" and, "What's going on with these two lovebirds?" That's not my focus. I know it's hard for people to believe that about a woman, because we're all supposed to be crying out and in need (laughs). It's more about being at peace with myself.
Are you in a relationship now, or are you taking a break?
Yeah, just taking a little break.

Mariah Carey has broken her moratorium on speaking about ex-husband Sony Music mogul Tommy Mottola in the September issue of Maxim. Asked what lessons matrimony taught her, the diva sensibly responds, ``To stay away from it!'' Having described the relationship as ``confining,'' she explains, ``I had to wear turtlenecks and long pants, and that wasn't me.'' Apparently not.

Mariah pretty in pink and sugary sweet
Neva Chonin, Chronicle Pop Music Critic
No Mariah Carey show would be complete without over-the-top antics, and Wednesday's show at Concord's Chronicle Pavilion didn't disappoint.
Standing in front of a starry backdrop, a five-piece band, four backup singers and 10 dancers dressed as circus performers, Carey finished her third ballad of the night and peered at one of the many fan-waved signs dotting the audience.
"Mariah for governor," she read, amused. "Not sure I'd make it. I barely made it through school. But," she added, with a triumphant flourish, "I'm here. "
She was, indeed. And that's something.
Carey has always suffered from a credibility problem, dismissed as a diva who channeled her powerful voice into the prosaic pop. The people loved her, though, and made her the best-selling female singer of the '90s.
Disaster struck in 2001 after her debut as a cinematic leading lady, in "Glitter," and its titular album crashed and burned. Her label, Virgin, paid her more than $29 million to go away. Rumors of physical and mental breakdown followed, fueled by a manic appearance on MTV's "Total Request Live."
Late last year, Carey made a comeback bid with "Charmbracelet" on Island/Def Jam; reviews were mixed. Now, her first major American tour in three years has been progressively downsized, allegedly because Carey wanted "intimate" performances.
Her intimate Concord show didn't sell out, though it was full enough to avoid disgrace and provide a large and enthusiastic reception for the singer's signature stratospheric trills and hyper-sleek sexuality. Carey gave loyal fans what they wanted, cantering through eight provocative costume changes that emphasized legs and cleavage while letting her five-octave voice wring every song dry.
Then there was the stage show. Flanked by an armada of bodyguards, Carey opened her 110-minute performance by approaching her Moulin Rouge-meets-the- big-top set through the center of the crowd, singing the hit "Heartbreaker." A cadre of dancers surrounded her onstage, playing paparazzi in a pointed reminder of Carey's star status. To the side, another dancer dressed as a ringmaster mimed painting the first of many Mariah portraits.
Two numbers later, Carey settled into a pink overstuffed chair (set incongruously among the circus props), a glass of white wine with a straw at her side, to deliver an overwrought rendition of "Charmbracelet's" "Through the Rain" ("about keeping your faith").
"It is so good to be here tonight. I just love this area," she sighed. Then, helpfully, "The Bay Area."
Carey went on to prove that she's still capable of formidable displays of technique, bending one note into six in a vocal conceit that's been imitated by every aspiring pop diva to cross the "American Idol" stage.
The concert leaned heavily on the singer's well-known, voice-displaying ballads, peppered with several selections from "Charmbracelet." For "Subtle Invitation," she descended from the rafters in a huge white sash, then draped herself across a pink-starred grand piano in a skintight white minidress. Ah, subtlety.
A vignette called "The Marionette Show" depicted a human puppet in clown makeup being manipulated by suited men on stilts while Carey sang "Clown" -- supposedly a jab at Eminem, who denigrated Carey during his "Eminem Show" tour.
To allow time for costume changes, Carey frequently surrendered the stage to videos and her backup singers and dancers. The star's own restrained dancing was delightfully punctuated by her dashing from one end of the stage to the other, looking for all the world like a fleeing heroine in a horror film.
Online fans voted on a favorite song for each night's set list (at the Pavilion, they opted for "Can't Take That Away.") Other audience favorites included "Dreamlover," Carey's cover of "I'll Be There" and a set-closing, inspirational dance rendition of "Make It Happen."
Those who came hoping to see an emotional meltdown left disappointed. Carey was cheerful and upbeat, from her repeated declarations that "It's all jokes and fun up here!" to paeans to endurance like the gospel-infused ballad "My Saving Grace," which came complete with a truncated life-of-Mariah video showcasing the star's journey through the valley of career darkness and back again.
Hip-hop songs punctuated the balladic excess, including "Honey" (with dancers performing martial-arts maneuvers) and the current hit "I Know What You Want," featuring a video of rappers Busta Rhymes and Rah Digga. Carey appeared for only one verse, clad in a clingy tank top and cutoff jeans.
Carey pulled out whatever stops were left with a rambunctious cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" and the dance tune "Fantasy," with its addictive sample of the Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love."
The night ended with Carey in a white feathered gown, singing an encore double-header of "Vision of Love" and a histrionic "Hero," which she lavishly dedicated to her fans.
She has survived, but she hasn't grown. Carey is still mired in a sugary pop approach that leaches the heart out of what should be a dynamic voice. If the lady has soul, it's lost in theatrical frippery that's great for its camp value but sells its artist short.

Heroes comment: Carey finished her third ballad of the night and peered at one of the many fan-waved signs dotting the audience. "Mariah for governor," she read, amused. "Not sure I'd make it. I barely made it through school. But," she added, with a triumphant flourish, "I'm here. " A classic!!!
"Carey went on to prove that she's still capable of formidable displays of technique, bending one note into six in a vocal conceit that's been imitated by every aspiring pop diva to cross the "American Idol" stage." Thank you Neva .

Mariah Carey Doesn't Hold High Note Record
Claims that Mariah Carey holds the world record for hitting the highest note in history and that she’s been immortalized for her vocal feat by 'The Guinness Book of World Records' are false, according to Kate Smith, spokeswoman for the record book. "It’s pure fiction. We don’t have a category for highest note by a human," Smith told the National Enquirer.

Heroes comment: Ok Kate, maybe you should add that category to The Guinness Book of World Records, oh and after all, no problem for me, if Mariah will be one day in the book or not.

Carey Comes "Alive" with brand new track
The next edition of W magazine will reveal Mariah Carey's upcoming power ballad "Alive" which she recorded live in the Bahamas. The song intially penned by Aurelius and 7 has now production notes under Chartmaker Inc and ASCAP adding the additional production of super balladeer David Foster.
The singer/songwriter discussed her future projects with W's Maggie Downer during her Charmbracelet tour in Las Vegas.
The track promised to mix live vocals with a studio beat but is "transparently honest". According to W, who heard the title mastering, the song is unlike any CAREY songs, "its refreshing to hear Carey sing folk in a ballad format" quotes W's Downer.
The opening is a guitar based ref that stops completely allowing for a lower registry Carey to pull in and continue with her mid chords staying comfortably throughout the song.
The lyrics "Soft and tender , he feels ALIVE when he dances with the moon...is whispery but candid and erotic. The track will be an teaser to her upcoming March EP "Live", a collection of LIVE songs from Carey's journey's recording LIVE music in the studio or on stage. The EP will feature 6 tracks including the highly anticipated power ballad "reach for the sky".
Alive will drop into radios on October 28, 2003. For more on this check out the October issue of W, out in newsstands next month.

Charmed Life

You've heard the songs, seen the videos, and lusted after her gams - but Mariah Carey says you ain't seen nothing yet.
Interview by Eric Alt
Photos by Antoine Verglas
Mariah Carey steels herself for the inevitable questions about her life with a laugh almost sweet enough to make us play nice. “Can’t we talk about what kind of cream I’m rubbing on my legs or something?” Though she tries to draw our attention to her body of work, who can ignore a career with such high highs (15 number one singles, best-selling female artist ever) and weird lows (her infamous TRL striptease, her struggles with exhaustion)? But Mariah has gotten up, dusted herself off, and came out singing.
First off, what question are you most sick of being asked?
Oh, my! There are a few! I don’t have one in mind, but keep going and I’ll let you know.
You’ve taken a trashing in the media these past few years. How do you keep it all in perspective?
The way I look at it is, you take the good with the bad. We’re all human, and we all go through good times and difficult times. But in the end it’s all about getting up he right way. My song “Through the Rain” (from Charmbracelet) is about going through all these things. I feel triumphant singing it.
Was there ever a particular piece of criticism that stung the most?
There were so many things. Sometimes when you’re a celebrity, people are like “Heavens to Betsy!” if you sneeze the wrong way. In reality, celebrities lead lives that don’t necessarily go in tandem with our public images. People think they know everything about you because of the way you sang “Hero.”
So are you a diva?
Everybody’s a diva these days. You can be the diva of garbage women – it doesn’t matter. It’s a little bit tired. When I was growing up, my mother was an opera singer, so I connected divas to someone who can really sing and is a bit grandiose. So I guess that would be me. There are rumors about how I walked into a hotel and insisted on completely redecorating a room before I stayed there.
So you don’t throw your weights around to get into restaurants?
No, I usually have other people take care of that for me. [laughs]
What was the most outrageous lie you head about yourself?
That I refuse to walk on grass. Even funnier is that apparently I also refuse to walk on carpeting. So I guess I hover. [laughs] How do people think I get from Point A to Point B?
But sometimes it’s another celebrity taking potshots at you. Any reason why Eminem would take a lyrical swipe at you in his song “Superman”?
Yeah, it happened. Did I have a sexual relationship with him? No, I didn’t I knew him, I hung out with him a few times, but nothing sexual occurred. I’d admit it if it did, but it didn’t. And that’s what I was so upset about the whole thing, because I was like, “Look, if I had an intimate relationship with the person, that would be one thing, but…” Maybe he thought because nothing happened he’d look bad or something.
Dare we even dig up Glitter?
C’mon, don’t do that to me!
I think we’ve found that question you hate most!
I’m bored talking about it. It was two years ago. There are so many positive things to talk about! All I can say is that I couldn’t have had the cards more stacked against me – the soundtrack came out the week of September 11th, and I had just been hospitalized for exhaustion. What could I do? Kids come up all the time and tell me they loved the movie. What are you gonna say? It’s funny!
What it tougher to take because the movie reflected your life story?
It really didn’t. The only thing was that the girl was interracial and a singer. My life story would be a hell of a lot more interesting.
Did that sour you on acting, or do you want to keep doing it?
I did a movie called Wisegirls with Mira Sorvino that was a great experience. It epitomized why I want to pursue acting. It was this little indie film, and it got some good reviews. We went to Sundance and got a standing ovation. I got to play a character that was so far from who I am. She’s a drug-dealing waitress from Staten Island who’s like [in a goombah accent] a friggin’ broad, ya know? It allowed me not to be Mariah Carey for a minute. Next I’m going this movie called Sweet Science. My character’s a boxer…a really bad one. It’s a romantic comedy.
Speaking of you and cameras, your videos do a breathtaking job of revealing you to the public.
I know I have this image that’s sexy. But I’m basically like Mary Poppins. That’s my nick-name! I’m prudish. It’s like playing dress-up. When you go through difficult stuff as a kid sometimes your childhood stays with you. I’ve hung on to that. There was a period when I was in a relationship that was confining, where I had to wear turtlenecks and long pants, and that wasn’t me. So when I broke out of that – around the time of the “Honey” video, where I jump out of the water like a secret agent – everybody was shocked. But that was the real me coming out.
Describe the lean yours for us.
Even struggling, I always felt like I was going to get past it. I remember having one pair of shoes that I had to walk to work in. I worked at a sports bar, and my job was to sit there in a tight T-shirt and sell shirts to guys. But these shoes were my mom’s and a size too small. My toes would be poking through the front, and I’d be trudging through the snow.
You were married at age 23 to Tommy Mottola, then chairman of Sony Music Entertainment. What do you learn about marriage?
To say away from it! [laughs] I would marry again if it were about having kids, but other than that I can’t see myself doing it.
And what did the experience teach you about record executives?
That they’re brutal! I would hear the way they talk about the artist’ backs because I had the unique position of being there behind closed doors. It wasn’t pretty.
Now that you’re a powerful singer, songwriter, and producers, do you have a dream collaborator?
I’ve always been a fan of Stevie Wonder, and we’ve always talked about working together. I’ve worked with so many people it’s just unbelievable – everyone from Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z to Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Pavarotti.
What’s your best ODB story?
I love him. He’s the funniest because he just doesn’t care. He’s hilarious.
Is he batshit crazy?
It depends on his mood. But he’s a really cool guy. He’s talented and…very free.
Are you keeping your eye on any up-and-coming divas?
I like Beyonce. She’s cool. I like that she writes her own songs, as opposed to people who are clearly emulating others a bit too much.
Like J.Lo? It’s been alleged that her producers stole ideas from you.
I wouldn’t want to comment on that. Sorry, just trying to abide by the laws here.
Is it true you let fans on your Web site pick the songs you sing in concert?
Yes, it’s whatever comes in the top 15. I don’t live on the Internet. I give them things like tickets, but for me to read everybody’s opinion night and day would not be good.
But you do actually post messages from time to time, right?
Yeah, that would be me.
Is it every a little weird being that accessible to your fans?
I have a Jack Russell who’s so cute. There’s this one girl in Japan who dresses up like my dog and comes to concerts. This girl has a Web site devoted to him. So that’s pretty amusing.
How much does being in the spotlight – to the extent where people dress up like your dog – make it hard for you to date?
I’m in a weird position because I started doing this so young and was so secluded, and then I was in a relationship with a much older person. I’ve never really dated. I’ve experienced people hitting on me, obviously.
How do they usually go about it?
People come up to me and ask to marry me. But it’s not that hard. Just strike up a conversation! I can talk to just about anyone. It’s not about the who’s who of my address book. It’s about who’s fun, who’s cool.
Then how about a date with us? Karaoke maybe?
It’d be fun to walk in, do it, and see everyone’s reaction. It might be something I should do.
So you don’t necessarily only want to date other celebrities?
With another celebrity, there are egos. It’s like, “Which fan came up to me and asked for an autograph and didn’t ask you?” Who really cares? It’s not about how many magazine covers I can get on with this person.
Do average guys ever hit on you?
I don’t know. Do whistling and catcalls count?
Vital Stats: Born March 27, 1970, in Huntington, New York. “I’ve been singing since I was four. My mother was an opera singer and a vocal coach, and we both pretty much knew I had a natural talent for music. Writing songs was my creative outlet. Whenever there was anything difficult going on, I turned to writing as escapism.”
Her fairy tale story: “My shoe broke onstage twice on this tour. It was very Cinderella! One night I noticed that the heel had broken off. I was hopping on one leg, trying to finish the song and laughing. So I just threw it out to the audience and gave it to a fan, then I broke the other shoe and finished the song barefoot.”
Driving herself crazy: “Being chauffeured around becomes mundane. I actually hate limos. I love to drive, even though I’m not a very good driver.”
Good sport: “I’m a fast runner. But when it comes to organized sports, I’m not good. I’m like, ‘Why is this person running toward me and what do I do now? Which goalie am I protecting?’ My brain doesn’t work that way. I know guys want to play basketball with their girlfriends, so I should pretend that I’m good at it, but the truth is I suck. I’m looking for someone to teach me.”
What she wants in a man: “Definitely a sense of humor. If somebody just sits there and talks about mundane subjects, they’re just boring as hell. Why bother?”

Mariah Carey Says She's Just Like Mary Poppins
Mariah Carey is on the cover of the new issue of Maxim magazine where she talks about her nickname Mary Poppins, gained because of her lifestyle that she insists matches the prim and propper nanny. "I know I have this image that's sexy. Bit I'm basically like Mary Poppins. That's my nickname! I'm prudish. It's like playing dress-up," Carey explained. "When you go through difficult stuff as a kid sometimes your childhood stays with you. I've hung on to that. There was a period when I was in a relationship that was confining, where I had to wear turtlenecks and long pants, and that wasn't me. 'Intimate evening' with fans suits her
By Gary Graff
Stars who exist in the multiplatinum, genre-spanning realm of Mariah Carey are conditioned to think big. But for her 2003 North American tour, the songstress has learned about downsizing.
Carey had already announced a series of arena dates when, one day at an amusement park, she encountered a fan who expressed disappointment.
"I have a really close, interactive relationship with my fans," the 33-year-old Carey says, "and I knew that she was one of those fans who's really involved and wants all the information and everything. She was telling me that she'd seen me before in concert, in a big place, and she didn't really feel the experience.
"That made me think," the singer-songwriter says. "I wanted to do this so that the fans can feel like they've really had the experience of being there with me and having an intimate evening."
Besides, Carey adds, she had already started rehearsing for the larger-venue show – which she did perform in Korea and Japan – and she was finding it "uninspiring."
"It was like a rehearsing of what I've done before," she says, "which wasn't what I wanted to do."
The new model for the North American shows comes from Carey's past. She was inspired by memories of her 1992 MTV "Unplugged" concert, which became a triple-platinum album and launched her chart-topping cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There."
"That was a very intimate performance," Carey recalls. "I didn't even know it was going to be an album – the cool thing was, people got to see me perform in an intimate setting. I'd never performed live like that, ever, and I think people who went to that show still have the memory and talk to me about it, that they enjoyed that type of venue with me."
SDSU's Open Air Theatre, where Carey performs tomorrow in her first-ever San Diego appearance, seats just under 4,800.
"So the way I look at this tour is sort of like 'Unplugged' meets cabaret," she concludes, "because we've got a big production in terms of the dancing and the whole kind of cabaret atmosphere, but also it doesn't take itself too seriously.
"And it's not like I take myself too seriously out there, either."
Carey has the credentials to be as serious as she wants, of course. The Long Island-born daughter of opera singer Patricia Carey, she emerged from singing backup for Brenda K. Starr to win a Grammy Award as Best New Artist for her nine-times-platinum debut album, "Mariah Carey" (1990).
The rest of the decade was marked by a series of achievements as wide-ranging as Carey's seven-octave voice, which includes a piercing upper register that detractors sometimes liken to a dog whistle. Nevertheless, Carey's 11 albums have sold more than 140 million units worldwide and logged 15 No. 1 hits on the Billboard charts, giving her more cumulative weeks at No. 1 than any other artist in history.
From her 2002 album "Charmbracelet," the latest single is Carey's rendition of Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartache" (1995).
"A lot of people didn't even know that song," she says with a laugh. "People from the label were like, 'What song is this?,' because it's not like it was 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' (1995) or 'Photograph' (1995). It was more obscure, but it's a great song."

A pop queen's comeback
MARIAH CAREY READY TO TURN TARNISH OF 'GLITTER' INTO GOLD
By Marian Liu - Mercury News
One-time queen of pop Mariah Carey hopes to reclaim her throne.
Carey owned the '90s. Her ballads were the prom and pubescent crush soundtrack for that generation. She sold more than 150 million albums and had 15 No. 1 records, putting in the rarefied company of the Beatles and Elvis.
But the new millennium hasn't been kind. She's suffered through very public humiliation and was pushed aside by a string of younger divas -- Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé Knowles.
Now she's pushing back with a comeback tour. In the Bay Area, show was moved from the bigger HP Pavilion at San Jose to the Chronicle Pavilion at Concord for a more "intimate" experience, her handlers say.
"It's more about the need to continue to express myself, and to continue to make sure I feel happy with what I'm doing artistically," Carey says by phone after a concert in Japan.
By now, the 33-year-old's rise to stardom is well known.
She was born in Long Island, the daughter of an Irish-American opera singer and a Venezuelan-African-American aeronautical engineer. By age of 4, she knew she wanted to sing. Her break came at 18, when she handed a tape to then-Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola at a party.
She quickly blossomed into a diva, replacing Madonna as pop's queen. Starting with "Love Takes Time" and "Vision of Love," her songs cornered the market on teenage love. She won two Grammys and topped charts each year of the '90s.
Working with co-writers, she penned all but one ("I'll Be There") of her No. 1 hits.
"If I'm working on a ballad I like to work with people who play piano better than I do, because I'm terrible," says Carey, a self-professed workaholic. "Some songs I write on the piano myself, like `Vision of Love' was one of those songs that I started on the piano. My ideas, my melodies come to me so much quicker than my ability to play the chords."
Then her star imploded: the box-office bomb of her movie "Glitter," two record-label changes and an emotional breakdown that included a near striptease on MTV's "Total Request Live."
"Now I realized, that the most important thing is to just take care of myself as a human being, and not just like as an object that gets on stage and sings, or is in a video," Carey says. "That's because I started out so young, like right out of high school, that it was like, learn how to be superwoman, you don't take time off for yourself, you don't have your own moments, you don't have your own space.
"That's what the older people wanted me to feel, that's what the business people wanted me to feel, because it's easier for them to make money off of someone like that, off my insecurities as a young person. But, now I've learned. It's all about being creative in your moments when you need to be creative, and then you know, not killing yourself in the process."
Carey returned to her roots with her latest CD, "Charmbracelet," which came out in December. She wraps her five-octave range around ballads, like "Through the Rain," which describes her struggle.
"I've had a kind of an interesting life, even from childhood," Carey says. "I've always had to lean on my faith no matter what's going on in my life, and sometimes that becomes more difficult than other times when you've just got to do it and got to get through any tough times that you go through."
Her long road to independence has led to a new freedom with her image, revealing a sexier, no-holds-barred diva.
"Honestly, I'm just like a big kid still playing dress, up," Carey says. "It's funny to me when people actually think that it's a sex-symbol image, and I guess it is, but it's more like in the beginning of my career, I really wanted it to be all about my voice, the record company wanted me to be very, almost puritanical in the way that I dressed. And now it's more about having fun.
"I don't think I take it too far. I think you have to have a point where enough is enough. There are certain things I wouldn't feel comfortable doing and I wouldn't do."
She answered the critics of female artists donning less and less these days:
"I think whatever everyone wears is their prerogative, but I think that's become the focal point rather than the music."

Mariah Carey revels in show at Red Rocks
She gives fans vocal fireworks, bump, grind on comeback tour
By G. Brown, Denver Post Popular Music Writer
Mariah Carey has experienced dreamlike success and painful reality.
At the turn of the millennium, the best-selling female singer of the '90s put her career on the line as never before with a new movie, a new record and a new contract estimated at $100 million.
Unfortunately, her personal anguish - a skittish and strange appearance on MTV's "TRL," and her subsequent hospitalization for an emotional and physical breakdown - made all the news. The frightening meltdown coincided with the disastrous releases of her film "Glitter" and the titular album. She took a nearly $30 million buyout to part with Virgin Records.
Now, Carey has returned in an earnest comeback bid. She visited Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Sunday night.
"I've never performed in Colorado before, but I spend every Christmas in Aspen," the 33-year-old Long Islander said prior to the show, at once candid and coy. "I'm a very festive person, so I love being in the snow for the holidays ... although I don't know how you put up with it all winter!"
Carey admitted that the lack of live appearances in the past might have hurt her. Critics labeled her lightweight and vaguely
thought of her as the bubble-gum pop star with the diva voice, controlled by a behind-the-scenes mastermind. (She famously married Sony Music CEO Tommy Mottola in 1993 and famously divorced him in '97.)
"I never used to perform. That was management's choice, but I understood it. I wasn't raised in the 'Mickey Mouse Club.' I
started out as a background singer; I wasn't the one out front with all that pizazz. I was standing there flat-footed. It took me a long time to feel confident.
"I look at this tour as 'MTV Unplugged' meets 'Cabaret.' We've got a big production in terms of dancing and the atmosphere, but its not like I'm taking myself too seriously here."
But Carey has felt the effects of a spiritless summer touring market. After booking a tour of 15,000-seat arenas across the U.S., her reps said she would instead play smaller venues to guarantee more "intimate" performances. At Red Rocks, only a reported 3,500 tickets were sold.
Yet it didn't seem to bother Carey. She was excited to be at the famed outdoor amphitheater, and she ingratiated herself to the Denver-area devotees, returning to what she does best, showcasing her stratospheric vocal pyrotechnics.
The sultry singer entered the stage from the middle rows of the Rocks, surrounded by screaming fans while singing the exuberant "Heartbreaker." She then loaded up on hits during the night. With singer Trey Lorenz, she led the audience in a singalong to "I'll Be There," and gamely attempted a little bump-and-grind dance number for "Fantasy."
Carey is asking fans - or "lambs," as she calls them - to help her decide each night's set list via her official website, and the vote at Red Rocks was for "One Sweet Day," her hit with Boyz II Men. The encores were "Vision Of Love" and "Hero."
Carey also performed songs from 2002's "Charmbracelet," her first release for Island. She writhed during the Busta Rhymes parts of "I Know What You Want" and offered an over-the-top cover of Def Leppard's power ballad "Bringin' On the Heartbreak."
It was a lot more fun than, say, a Whitney Houston concert. Too bad the theatrical element of the performance was uneven.
"The Marionette Show" vignette was a takeoff on "The Eminem Show," Carey's opportunity for payback after Eminem dissed her on his track "Superman." She sang "Clown" while masked men on stilts tugged a female dancer/human puppet wearing a blond wig and Detroit Pistons jersey. The crowd's response was a collective "Huh?"
And the 1-hour, 45-minute set was interrupted by Carey's eight costume changes - ranging from sequined body suits to evening gowns to Hooters-style short, tight clothing - during which her dance ensemble and backing singers tried in vain to hold the audience's attention.
Voyeurs may have hoped Carey's post-breakdown tour would express recriminations and tantrums, but it was all rainbows and stars. She announced "Through The Rain" as being about perseverance, and as she sang the gospel-tinged ballad "My Saving Grace," a giant video screen flashed images of her as a wide-eyed school girl, a superstar and a fallen diva-in-distress before giving way to her beaming visage.
"Two years ago, I was touring and promoting and sleeping one hour a night, if that. I was going through troubles with Sony. It was more than any human could possibly endure," Carey said.
"I just had to learn to say no, to take care of myself, that I was important, not just this image that everyone had of me on TV doing 'Oprah.' I just went to therapy and did things that were healing. I think a lot of celebrities go through stuff like that and their 'people' keep it quiet. But I'm comfortable enough to say, 'Yeah, I'm human."'
Did the "Glitter" fiasco scare off some of her fans?
"The movie came out on 9/11, remember.
"I would have been soured on doing another movie if it wasn't for 'Wise Girls.' It's an independent film that won an award at Sundance," she said of her turn as a saucy Mafia restaurant waitress. "Now I'm doing another one in the fall for the same company."
Carey admitted she's had a lot of emotional baggage to sift through.
"Now I just rest during the day. I sit with my little humidifier, pampering and babying my voice."

Mariah Carey wants to connect with fans in many ways
Oakland Tribune - By: Jim Harrington
Mariah Carey wants to be close to you. How close? Let's just say closer than ever before.
In her first world tour in three years, Carey is taking a decidedly more intimate approach than what fans have come to expect from the top-selling female recording artist. Instead of playing the gargantuan arenas that have defined her record-setting career, the 33-year-old New Yorker is focusing on theaters and other relatively small venues for the Charmbracelet 2003 Tour.
This downsized tour, which will include her hits as well as new songs from the recently released CD "Charmbracelet," will hit the Bay Area on Wednesday for a date at the Chronicle Pavilion.
The diva behind such No.1 smashes as "Fantasy," "Hero," "Dream Lover" and a dozen others says that the idea for mounting a smaller tour came after meeting a fan at an amusement park. The devotee had seen the singer in concert before -- and loved it -- but thought the experience lacked a sense of intimacy.
"At those big venues they put all the corporate people in front and you don't really get to connect with the fans. And that's what I'm all about," Carey says during a phone interview from her apartment in the New York.
The Chronicle Pavilion isn't usually considered "intimate," but organizers have made special arrangements to transform the amphitheater to better suit Carey's show.
While the tour is intimate compared to past performances, it's still not as intimate as the singer originally intended.
"I actually wanted to do, like, a nightclub tour, which I thought would have been pretty cool," she explains.
In all, the concert should be somewhat of a hybrid -- something between the arena-worthy spectaculars of Carey's past and the unfulfilled dream of a nightclub tour. That mix should perfectly suit Carey, a versatile performer equally adept at handling love ballads and dance numbers.
"It's much less a (big) pop production than it is more of a theatrical kind of cabaret-meets-unplugged vibe," Carey says of the concert. "It's almost more about having a show with personality. Because it's a smaller venue, you will be able to catch the nuances of what is happening on the stage."
Taking the fan-friendly approach a step further, Carey will let fans have a say on the songs she performs. The Mariah faithful have been casting votes for their all-time favorite tunes on the singer's Web site -- mariahcarey.com
"What are they sick of? What do they want to hear? What do they want to hear from the new album? The older stuff?" Carey says of the questions that the interactive set list has helped clear up. "It kind of surprised me. First, 'Through the Rain' was the No.1 song. And they can pick from any album, any year, whatever.
"And then just recently, 'Hero' (took over) No.1. And I was, like, 'I was going to do 'Hero' anyway.' Sometimes I'm, like, 'Aren't they sick of that song by now?' But I guess they're not."
Along with "Hero," expect to hear "Vision of Love" and "My All" as well as the "Charmbracelet" favorites "Through the Rain," "Boy (I Need You)" and "Bringing on the Heartbreak," Carey's surprising cover of Def Leppard's hard-rocking hit.
"I appreciate a good song from any genre of music," Carey reasons. "I just feel like that song is such a good song that it really stands alone. Even if you did it a capella, it would still (work)."
Besides singing "Hero" on stage, Carey has been acting like one off the stage as well. She has been a tireless supporter of the Save the Music Foundation, which funds musical education, training and awareness in schools.
"If they are going to cut music out of the school programs," Carey says, "they may cut some kid's desire to even be in school."
Even after 14 years in the business, Carey is still passionate about music and it's obvious she feels she still has something to prove. But she isn't doing it for music critics or record executives or industry insiders.
"At this point in my life, it's more about proving something to myself, in terms of 'Did I do a good job with this? Am I expressing myself honestly as an artist?' That's where I am at this moment."
Sounds like a good place to be.

Mariah Carey - This diva isn't taking rabbits on tour with her
Aidin Vaziri for San Francisco Chronicle
It is truly inspiring to see Mariah Carey, 33, bounce back so brilliantly after all the hard times. Just a few months ago, she downsized her arena tour to give fans a chance to see her in a more intimate environment. And even though her latest album, "Charmbracelet," has already sold 1 million copies since its December release, she just rereleased it, making it even better than before with more songs and pictures and everything. And what about her amazing new single? A cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' On the Heartbreak." That's right. Mariah Carey is pretty much totally 100 percent back. She plays the Paramount in Oakland on Wednesday and Friday.
Q: How was your vacation?
A: My vacation was good, thank you. I was in St. Bart's working out, torturing myself with my trainer. The cool thing is we do water aerobics, and I love the water. I'm like a mermaid, basically, so it doesn't even feel like working out.
Q: I wondered what you did to entertain yourself after you already jet- skied, scuba dived and dangled out of a helicopter.
A: Exactly. Clearly, I love the water, and I'm no stranger to a water toy.
Q: How does that work out on tour?
A: It's not that easy. It's not like I can bring a baby pool and do my water aerobics in there.
Q: Sure you can.
A: You think? Don't tempt me because I have to do it.
Q: You can put a pool right next to the rabbits.
A: Oh yeah, the rabbits, of course. What is this about rabbits? I heard about that. Somebody said I had rabbits with me somewhere or something?
Q: That's right.
A: Yeah, that would be not true. That would be one of those lies like I don't walk on carpeting.
Q: Everyone makes up the best lies about you.
A: I know. I think it's the thing to do.
Q: If there really was a person like what you're supposed to be that would be awesome.
A: Wouldn't that person be incredible? But I'm just not her.
Q: What's your favorite late-night television?
A: I don't know because I barely have time to watch TV. I think it's the "Nick at Night" type things.
Q: Like "Gilligan's Island"?
A: Yeah.
Q: On your Web site it said that if you ever had a daughter you would name her Ginger.
A: My dog's name is Ginger, so I'm going to have to rethink that.
Q: Because your daughter probably wouldn't really appreciate having the same name as your dog.
A: Exactly. I can just picture her growing up being, "She named me after a dog!"
Q: Do you ever watch the Home Shopping Network?
A: Yeah, but I'll be buying everything. The other day they had this food processor on there, and I was like, that looks really amazing. But then I was, like, this is such nonsense. They're just trapping me with this infomercial. But I was telling my housekeeper, "Order this food processor!" Like I'm ever in the kitchen processing food myself.
Q: When was the last time you made dinner?
A: I have lived in this (New York) apartment for two years now, and I still haven't cooked myself. When I go away, like at Christmastime, then I cook. You know what's funny? I am a good cook, though. I got it from my father.
Q: What's your specialty?
A: Linguine with white clam sauce.
Q: You're not afraid the clams will bite you?
A: Well, usually I'm a little lazy, so I have somebody else shuck the clams for me because you can't use canned clams. That would not be stellar. But, yeah, we do that. And I also do a really good red sauce, a marinara sauce.
Q: What do all the people that follow you around day to day do, anyway?
A: It's not day to day. If I had that when I wasn't working, that would not be a cute moment.
Q: I probably shouldn't believe all the crazy things I always read about you.
A: Please don't. I mean, you can if it's entertaining to you. This one is entertaining to me.
Q: This interview is going to set the record straight on everything, including the rabbits.
A: OK, cool. I like that.

Industry Insider: Mariah May Need to Slow Pace
Beck/Smith Celebrity Gossip
Industry insiders are beginning to wonder whether Mariah Carey may need to slow down her infamously grueling work pace. The 32-year-old multi-platinum selling songstress suffered a physical and emotional breakdown back in 2001 due to exhaustion from overworking herself while preparing the soundtrack and marketing campaign for her debut feature film, “Glitter.” And while we commend Mariah for stepping back into the feature film ring by starring as a female boxer in the romantic comedy “The Sweet Science,” we just hope and pray she’s pacing herself.
After all, she is committed to providing a soundtrack for the film as well. And on top of that, since the role is so physically demanding, Mariah has been working out in the boxing ring while touring the country with her current "Charmbracelet" tour, according Anthony Esposito, one of the film’s producers.
There are signs that Carey has learned from overworking herself. The tour she’s mounted is only taking places in intimate concert halls and club settings, cutting down on much of the exhaustive tour process. And the tour is to end at September’s end, giving Carey nearly a whole month before “The Sweet Science,” is to roll in November.

Boa feather skirt aside, Mariah's really one of us
Most divas want us to identify with them. But Mariah Carey, recovered from her meltdown, just wants us to sing along
By J.D. Considine - Special to The Globe and Mail
Mariah Carey At the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Thursday
Mariah Carey is not your typical diva.
Granted, she lives up to the part in many ways. Blessed with a voice of unusual power and range, she's capable of jaw-dropping displays of technique, and is given to occasional fits of vocal excess. (And also, if the tabloids are to be believed, to fits of emotional excess.) She's fond of spectacle, of changing costumes every two or three songs, and of thanking her audience for being truly wonderful people.
All of which would be more than enough to put her on par with Whitney, Celine or Barbra. (Divas, after all, are on a first-name basis with the world.) But after seeing her bring the Charmbracelet Tour 2003 to Toronto's Air Canada Centre, it struck me that there's one thing that sets Carey apart from the others: Her focus.
An old joke about divas is that the reason they spend so much time warming up is because they're all about "mi, mi, mi." As such, their big moments tend to be tidal waves of emotion in which their sense of self crashes down on the audience and sweeps them away in a tsunami of sound. What they feel isn't simply love L-U-V; it's The Greatest Love of All, and we are meant to identify with them.
Carey's big moments, by contrast, come when she identifies with us. She may have subtitled Can't Take That Away as Mariah's Theme, but watching her perform it -- or, more specifically, watching her fans sing along -- it was clear that what she was talking about wasn't her own life so much as everyone's need to believe in themselves.
Likewise, during the show-closing rendition of Hero, she not only assured her fans that "the hero lies in you," but she drove the point home by repeating the last word and pointing around the audience.
A populist diva, in other words.
Just how much of this message gets out beyond her fan base is hard to say. Certainly, the widespread snickering that met both her 2001 emotional meltdown and the widescreen flop that was Glitter suggests that there are many who aren't uplifted by her message.
Moreover, it's hard to say whether the Charmbracelet show would have changed their minds. Certainly, the highlights were impressive -- not just Hero and Can't Take That Away, but also the jaunty, Genius of Love-based Fantasy and her surprisingly powerful cover of Def Leppard's Bringin' on the Heartbreak. But as for the rest of the show, well, it's hard for me to say because I didn't see much of it.
Granted, I was in my seat from the moment Mariah made her entrance, straight through the crowd and onto the stage, until the final chords of Hero died out and the house lights came up. But because I was seated on the side all the way to the front, most of what happened on-stage was out of my line of sight. (Anyone who tells you that reviewers get the best seats in the house clearly has never covered a concert.) I can report she performed for 1¾ hours, sang 18 songs and wore eight different outfits, ranging from a spangly, cream-coloured gown with a boa feather skirt to pink gym shorts with a white "Athletic Princess" tank top. There was also a lot of dancing, several videos, a fair number of props, and I'm pretty sure I saw people in stilts wearing Nixon masks. Of course, were Carey the standard sort of diva, such details would have mattered immensely. Fortunately for both of us, they didn't.

With live shows defining her career, Mariah Carey makes first visit to Red Rocks
By Mark Brown, Rocky Mountain News
It's mystifying why Mariah Carey doesn't do more live appearances in the United States. The two most defining moments in her career were live ones.
Though she'd already had a string of No. 1 hits, it was her MTV Unplugged version of I'll Be There that helped make her a household name in 1992.
And it was her stunning return to form singing Hero on the post-Sept. 11 "A Tribute To Heroes" that erased much of the recent bad publicity. Forget breakdowns and contracts and bad movies; in four minutes on Sept. 18, 2001, Carey reminded fans of why they fell in love with her voice in the first place.
They get another chance when Carey hits Red Rocks on Sunday for her first concert there, touring on her new album, charmbracelet.
"Every time I do shows in Japan, I come to America as well," Carey says, calling from Nagoya, Japan, in the middle of the night. "I just haven't done that many dates. This is going to be the most dates I've ever done, actually."
The obstacle, she says, is properly resting and taking care of her legendary five-octave voice. It makes it impossible for her to do long strings of back-to-back shows, which makes touring more expensive and logistically complicated.
"I need one or two days off between shows," she says. Her first trip to high-altitude Red Rocks is a little daunting; though she's spent time in Aspen, "I haven't really done much singing there. It's all about just being in my hotel room and having humidifiers, I think."
She agrees, though, that her live performances and simply doing what she does best is a good strategy: delivering a song with a stunning voice and overwhelming emotion.
It was intense to be in that room with all those talented people for one cause"
It was also the end of a dark era. A decade of hits - One Sweet Day, Butterfly, Someday, Love Takes Time - along with a marriage and a nasty divorce from record exec Tommy Mottola made her among the most famous people on the planet for reasons other than her voice.
By 2001, Carey had run herself ragged and was on the brink of collapse. She made bizarre TV appearances and posted rambling notes on her Web site that had fans genuinely scared for her well-being. With a movie bomb in Glitter and a falling out with her record label, Carey was in the worst trouble of her career.
That made it especially meaningful to her when she came out and shone.
"Of course it would be" a vindicating moment, she says. "It's so difficult to live in the public eye. People just believe everything they read and what they see on TV. A lot of that is sensationalism. You know that because you work in this industry that what you're reading you have to take with a grain of salt.
"I felt victimized by that a little bit. But getting back to the music is always the best thing for me," she adds.
Fans also fear that she's lost her way. Carey is one of the few true singers out there these days with a voice that can't be touched. Yet it seems to some fans like she's letting others call the shots; rather than following her own instincts, at times she seems to be trying to mold herself to whatever's hot at the moment.
Carey disagrees, saying it's just that fans aren't used to all her facets.
"I don't feel that way with the charmbracelet album at all. I have a wide variety of influences," she says. "I love hip-hop music and always have. I've been doing collaborations with hip-hop artists since Old Dirty Bastard in 1996 with Fantasy. The label didn't put that on the pop charts; they only put that on the remix circuit. People who would listen to the hot stations would hear that, but . . . on the pop stations . . . you would hear Hero, know what I mean? I do both. I have the capacity to do a gospel-influenced ballad or a hip-hop influenced record. I don't feel I should be limited into doing one or the other. This album, charmbracelet, is the closest I've gotten to pleasing both sides of the spectrum, as well as myself."
It has been a prolific time for Carey, who released charmbracelet and already is in the middle of her next album, along with an album of remixes due out later this year.
"I'm writing right now. The remixes are coming out regardless. That's a contractual Sony thing. So those are coming out either way," she says. "I don't know about a (new) album this year."
Right now she's just enjoying the moment. Fans can go to her Web site to vote on what songs they want to hear in each city.
And she has learned, she says, from the mistakes she has made in the past.
"Yeah, I learned. I'm very happy. I'm in a very good space in my life," she says. "This is so much fun touring. I've learned so much about just having to slow down and take rests and stuff like that.
"It's about treating myself like a human being and not just an object.

Mariah fashions new biz venture
Phyllis Furman
Call her Mariah the mogul. Mariah Carey is scripting plans for an entertainment and fashion business targeting the lucrative
pre-teen girls market, show biz sources said.
The diva and her business partner, ex-Columbia and Arista senior exec Jerry Blair, have dreamed up a brand called Automatic Princess that they're trying to turn into a cartoon series, book, and jewelry and accessories line.
They're in talks with the creators of the hit Nickelodeon animated series, "As Told By Ginger."
Automatic Princess is a favorite slogan of the superstar singer, who wore a 24-carat gold belt spelling out the words, plus a matching medallion, in her recent music video featuring Busta Rhymes.
There will also be an Automatic Princess record, to be released in the fall by a 7-year-old artist named Sadie Dat Baby, who is signed to Carey's record label Monarc.
Carey sees an opportunity to tap the tween crowd, who make up a big chunk of her fan base.
Disney's made a fortune targeting mall-hoppers with its Disney Channel character Lizzie McGuire. But Lizzie's run could sputter now that its star Hilary Duff has walked away, though reruns will remain on the network.
Carey, who had suffered a breakdown and is now crafting a comeback, is aiming to create a character "with a positive image," a source said. "It's going to be about how to act and what to wear," the source said.

Men Among Boys
Jordan Zivitz - The Gazette
Considering his not-so-latent pop side, it's not surprising Collen is all for Mariah Carey's recent revival of Def Leppard's Bringin' on the Heartbreak (from 1981's High 'n' Dry) - a cover some fans have considered an act of high treason.
"You get e-mails from fans, and they go, 'It's disgusting, it's terrible.' I said, 'No - you've got to realize that she's on our side. Someone's actually out there promoting one of our songs. You should give her all the help she can get.' "Ultimately, it's just a great honour for us (if) anyone does that - and does a real genuine version, not recording the song and making fun of the band, like the Michael Jackson thing by Alien Ant Farm (Smooth Criminal). With Mariah it was a genuine version of our song. I actually think that's a huge compliment."

The Sweet Science news
Jordan Brady is set to begin production on his new film "The Sweet Science" on November 10. Mariah Carey is tipped for the lead role of Gloria Cordova, a boxing trainer left to run the family gym solo after the sudden death of her father. Like Jerry Maguire, Gloria finds herself abandoned by her father's fighters, leaving her to focus her attentions on Roxanne McCrary (to be played by real-life women’s boxing champion Laila Ali), an untried woman fighter who has shown signs of remarkable promise, decking her cheating husband with an astounding upper-cut.

Mariah Carey, Back In Good Form
Washington Post
By David Segal
Mariah Carey strutted to the stage of Merriweather Post Pavilion Tuesday night like a boxer on the way to a pay-per-view brawl. Surrounded by stern-looking bodyguards, she walked down an aisle and past a few hundred gaping fans, a spotlight following her every step. She looked tanned, fit and ready to throttle a few ballads until they begged for mercy.
But this five-octave beauty wasn't the best-selling female artist of the '90s for nothing. Signed to a new label and back on tour, Carey on Tuesday night was once again a bombshell coquette with a supernaturally supple voice and a smile that says "All this, pour moi?"
Carey's voice is so strong that it doesn't need histrionics. On "Hero," which was among her last numbers, she barely moved, which enhanced the song's power. And she did Def Leppard proud with a version of the English metal band's "Bringin' On the Heartbreak," turning down the emotional volume of the tune and discovering a dignity in the song that was buried by screaming guitars in the original.
She finished strong, gushing thank yous in a Long Island accent and beaming like a bantamweight who'd shaken off an eight-count and finally landed some uppercuts.

At the kitchen table with the pop diva
Mark van Husseling

Mariah Carey likes private jets and diamonds, but nevertheless she passes the modesty test without problems.
As I look through my mail, I feel like being upgraded to an "embedded" journalist. "1.30pm, meeting accredit press. 3pm, MC is lead into the restaurant. 3.55pm, MC stands on the balcony to say bye to her fans. 4.05pm Weltwoche interviews MC." I suppose that the abbreviation stands for "Master of Ceremony" and I'm thinking of General Tommy Franks. But that I notice that the e-mail hasn't been sent by the US Ministry of Defense but by the record label Universal Music. And the restaurant, where the "Master of Ceremony" will be led in is the "Kaufleuten" in Zurich. A little bit confused I call Donald Rumsfeld, who explains that MC stands for Mariah Carey.
At 4.05pm I'm sitting at the bar waiting. At 6.05pm I'm sitting in the lounge, still waiting. Latest plannings: Weltwoche interviews MC at 6.30pm. Or at 7.30pm in the back of the limo which will bring her to the airport. At 6.29pm I get to know that plan C will now start: interview at 8pm in the studios of Tele-Züri. I ask if there's a seat left for me in any of the limos which is driving MC and her entourage around. The guy from the label starts counting: "Security, hair stylist, make up-artist, personal stylist, road manger, press manager U Music, sorry, everything's booked." Yet he is kind enough to tell me I can take Tram 2 to Albisriederplatz from where Bus 33…
A date with Udo?
For long Mariah Carey has been seen as the doll which had 15 number one hits because her vocal chords have a five octave range but most of all because she did what the high people told her to do. Then the "most expensive pop diva of the world" (Stern) got divorced from the highest person, former Sony boss Tommy Mottola and broke down (she always denied the suicide rumors). Her back then record label fired her, which costed them 28 million Dollar. The 32 year old signed with the competiton. Earnings: 20 million Dollars.
At 8.15pm I'm sitting next to her in the three square meters small kitchen of Tele-Züri. 4 hours and 10 minutes late. Well that's almost on time, since recently the British Sunday Magazine had to wait for seven hours. "You look good," I say. "Because you sleep 12 hours each night?" She seems to be happy about my rather ungraceful compliment. "Twelve hours when I sing, if not I try to get eight hours." I show her a photo of Udo Jürgens [old German singer - H&K] "Do you know this man?" She says "I'm not sure, why?". I once visited Udo and saw a Mariah CD signed with "Thank you for a wonderful evening! Mariah". She giggles. The press manager enters the room, sees the phot and says "I guess Mariah got to know him at one of her Germany concerts."
"Some years ago you had an image problem. You were too nice. Now you're supposed to be neurotic, ain't that funny?" I say provokingly. "No, I can't really alugh about that, I'm tired of those rumors," she says. She's wearing a denim jacket by Dolce & Gabbana and Manolo Blahnik boots. She also has some diamond jewelry by her favorite jeweller Joan Boyce. She tells me that the most beautiful hotel is the "Quisisana" on Capri and the best restaurant would be the "Villa Verde". When she's home in New York she likes to go to the "Chin Chin". Tonight she'd be flying to Cannes in her Gulfstream-GV-Jet… My cell phone rings and she becomes silent. "Please go on talking," I say. "No, you have a call. Answer the phone," she replies. "So I can say: Sorry, I'm busy, I'm just having an interview with Mariah Carey?" "Yeah, that would be fun." "And if it's my mom?" "Then I'd like to chat with her a little."
I ordered the call. Just a little test to find out how she reacts. Because people who take themselves too seriously, go on talking unperturbed. Mariah Carey passed the test.

Mariah's bid to be Bond girl
John Dingwall
Singer Mariah Carey is being tipped to sing the theme tune for Bond 21. Bond fanatic Mariah agreed on condition she was given a cameo part, like Madonna in Die Another Day. Bond 21, which will definitely star Pierce Brosnan as 007 for the last time, will be out in 2005. As yet no story has been decided as the team are concentrating on a spin- off film featuring Halle Berry's character Jinx. A source said: "Mariah has had meetings with producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson. "She was asked if she'd consider singing the theme tune for Bond 21. Mariah said she wanted a part in the new film although the story hasn't been discussed yet." Hopefully, Mariah will help us forget Madonna's souless Die Another Day and bring back the big vocal style of former tunes like Goldfinger, Moonraker, Diamonds Are Forever by Shirley Bassey, or Tina Turner's Goldenye. Mariah plays Glasgow's SECC on October 25.

Carey goes over the top, delights fans
Anastasia Pantsios - Special to the Plain Dealer
She came, she trilled, she conquered. The multi-octave queen of the sentimental pop ballad, Mariah Carey, marched up the aisle and ascended to the stage at the Scene Pavilion Sunday night to thrill an almost full house with an 18-song, nearly two-hour show. It featured five musicians, four backup singers, 10 dancers, eight costume changes, lots of stage props and video and, of course, enough high notes to attract every dog in Cuyahoga County. But what would a Mariah Carey show be without overkill? We're in no danger of finding out. Her opening tune, "Heartbreaker," set the pace, as the dancers swarmed around her, and a top-hatted "artist" painted her picture at stage right. The first few songs featured a late 19th-century bohemian Paris theme with Degas and Toulouse Lautrec paintings on the video screen and performers costumed as cancan dancers, ballerinas and urchins. Carey was poured into a tiny pink and silver sequined minidress, the first of many outfits that exposed much of her admirable figure. Carey's set list was drawn from both the lengthy list of hits she has had since she emerged in 1990 and her latest album, 2002's "Charmbracelet." It even included a song, "Can't Take That Away," from 1999's "Rainbow," selected by a vote of fans on the Internet. Her bag of hits yielded tunes such as "Vision of Love," "Dreamlover," "Hero," spirited set-closer "Make It Happen" and "Fantasy," originally recorded with rapper ODB. It was one of several tunes on which a recorded track supplied the original rap. Her duet with Busta Rhymes, "I Know What You Want," was handled similarly. Carey reached into "Charmbracelet" for the melodramatic ballad "Through the Rain" and an even more melodramatic take on Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" that started quietly, accompanied by rickety percussion, and ended in a crashing sonic tidal wave. Another new song, "Clown," ushered in a set change to a circus-style theme with dancers enacting a marionette show. And on "Subtle Invitation" she posed on a pink star-decorated grand piano in a skin-tight strapless white mini. Subtle? Maybe not. Occasionally, Carey went deliciously over the top. "My Saving Grace," which she called "the story of my life," built to a howling climax while the video screen showed Carey being mobbed by fans, culminating in fireworks and a rainbow.

Carey puts on her 'Charmbracelet,' hits the road for rare tour
By Kevin C. Johnson - Post-Dispatch Pop Music Critic
We all know superstar songbird Mariah Carey for her piercing falsetto, a staggering list of chart-topping hits so lengthy that she released a CD titled "#1's," and the recent smash "I Know What You Want" with Busta Rhymes. We also know her for a sexpot fashion sense, a punch line known as "Glitter," a suspected nervous breakdown and a record-label buyout of her contract. What most of us don't know about the pop diva is what she's like in concert. Though Carey has excelled when it comes to making and breaking records, she's no road warrior. Carey's embarked on major tours once or twice, but she's largely stuck to major markets, and her itinerary has never included St. Louis. All that's about to change with a scheduled appearance Friday at the Fox. Explaining her reasons for not touring heavily, Carey says, "It's all about having the time in between shows to rest your voice. It's a rough thing if you don't take care of it. It's rigorous being on stage. So touring isn't the most practical thing for me to do. But with an album that's as personal to me as this one (her latest, 'Charmbracelet'), like it was with 'Butterfly,' it's time to do a tour. I do enjoy touring." The most successful singer of the '90s in terms of hits, Carey is also happy do some talking. Just don't ask her about slipping record sales for "Charmbracelet," radio's loss of love for her sound or Virgin Records' cutting her loose after signing her to a history-making deal. While you're at it, don't ask about any possible feuds with Eminem or J. Lo. Carey's publicist makes certain that the singer's five-minute interviews with news outlets - conducted while she was on tour in Japan recently - were strictly limited to her first-ever theater tour - dubbed such after it was scaled down from arenas. Last year's "Charmbracelet" includes "Through the Rain," a classic-sounding Carey pop ballad, and "Boy (I Need You)," a hip-hop-flavored cut with rapper Cam'ron. It is the album that got Carey back out on the road because, she says, "I went through a lot of things while making the album." To say the least. "Charmbracelet," which has sold more than a million copies, is the first CD from Carey after her career nadir, which included the failure of the "Glitter" CD and movie, and her abrupt exit from Virgin Records, which severed its contract in a severe example of damage control. "There were so many personal situations I was involved in," she says. "So this is an album I'm very proud of. I wanted to go out and express some of those emotions I'm feeling to my fans." She says she'll perform about four songs from "Charmbracelet," though the show will include as many of her greatest hits as she can squeeze in. Carey obviously has an unlimited supply of material. Carey created an immediate splash with her debut, 1990's "Mariah Carey," which was so successful that it could serve as a greatest-hits CD with smashes such as "Vision of Love," "I Don't Wanna Cry," "Someday" and "Love Takes Time." Carey followed her breakthrough with a string of records that some say stressed quantity over quality, but that didn't stop CDs like 1991's "Emotions" and 1993's "Music Box" from reaching the top. Carey proved to be the only singer at the time who could give Whitney Houston a run for her money, and her restraint-free vocals served as a blueprint for Christina Aguilera and a number of "American Idol" wannabes. By the mid-'90s, her music took a different direction, and she relied heavily on dance-music remixers and rappers. She has recorded with P. Diddy, Ludacris, Mystikal, Jermaine Dupri, Da Brat and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, to mixed result. By the time she got to "Glitter" in 2001, however, she'd completely overdosed on the hip-hop format. In concert, Carey says she makes sure to include material from each album, with songs such as "Hero," "Fantasy," "Heartbreaker" and "I Know What You Want" among the can't-do-without choices. Obviously, some songs won't make the cut, though it'd be a shame if "Make It Happen," "Breakdown" or "I Still Believe" were among them. On the other hand, save for "Loverboy," Carey might be advised to avoid the "Glitter" CD. Carey is allowing fans to help her decide which songs to perform through her official fan club, Honey B. Fly, accessible at her Web site, www.mariahcareyfanclub.com. "I wanted the fans to pick what they wanted to hear, and I was surprised by some of the songs," she says. For example, Carey didn't expect fans to request such "Charmbracelet" album cuts as "Subtle Invitation" and "Clown." "I think the diehard fans really got into this," she says. "They enjoy being a part of it." Early buzz on the tour wasn't good after her shows suddenly went from arenas to theaters, and Ashanti dropped off the bill. But Carey says downsizing the tour was a good decision. "Otherwise, I have a tendency to micromanage everything," she says, "and that can be a problem, especially when you're trying to enjoy yourself as well. I didn't want to have to think about the pyro stuff or the sound system. "And it was the right thing to have an intimate setting. Fans would be very disappointed if they didn't get a chance to feel what's on stage. It's all about communicating with an audience."
