Mariah carries newfound confidence
Pop diva says her breakdown is behind her, returns to stage
By Alan Sculley For FLORIDA TODAY
Mariah Carey makes no secret that she's tired of talking about her much-discussed emotional collapse of 2001.
"Well, I feel like I've gone over this on 'Oprah,' on 'Dateline,' on this one and that, so I'd rather not talk about it yet again,
because it was two years ago," Carey said.
Still, there's no getting around the topic, because it relates strongly to where Carey is in her life today. As even she points out, some songs (most notably "Through The Rain") on her current CD, "Charmbracelet," reflect on the changes that have occurred in her life since that time.
"That's why 'Charmbracelet' is so important to me, because it marks a place in my life where I learned to take the initiative, to take care of myself more as a human being, not just as a product," Carey, 33, said.
Throughout the 1990s, Carey's career had seemed charmed, to say the least. Signed at age 18 to Columbia Records, the Long Island native blasted onto the scene with a 1990 self-titled CD that sold more than 9 million copies in the United States alone.
Overall, she scored four chart-topping albums, had 15 No. 1 singles and worldwide record sales of 150 million, enough to make her pop's diva of the decade.
Plus, she married her boss, Columbia Records president Tommy Motolla, in 1993.
But by the late 1990s, Carey was heading into choppier career waters. First came her breakup with Mottola in 1997. Her relationship with Columbia eroded from there.
"It felt really hard and really impossible to stay there and still thrive," Carey said.
So Carey moved on, signing with great fanfare an $80 million deal with Virgin Records in 2001. For that label, she recorded "Glitter," a soundtrack album to the movie of the same title. The film flopped, and the soundtrack suffered as well, selling just 557,000 copies in the United States (Carey said worldwide sales were 2 million). Some started questioning Carey's future in music.
Then things went from bad to ugly.
In 2001, as she was promoting "Glitter" and dealing with its much-publicized failure, Carey began to show signs of emotional overload. She exhibited odd behavior during appearances on MTV's "Total Request Live" and at a record store signing in Garden City, N.Y.
Then, July 25, came the real meltdown. That day, Carey trashed her room at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in Manhattan.
She was taken from the hotel to her mother's home in Westchester County, where she collapsed. Her mother called for an ambulance for her daughter, who then checked herself in to Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Conn.
Several news outlets reported that Carey had attempted suicide, something Carey has vigorously denied.
In Carey's view, her breakdown was simply a product of overwork as she sought to establish herself apart from Columbia and Mottola. She said the relentless pace of public appearances and travel left her getting only three hours of sleep a night. The exhaustion and frustration, she said, finally caused her to break.
"At that point in my life, I was really spiraling trying to keep everything together," she said. "I didn't have the right team around me. I was just neglecting myself. It was just like not treating myself as a human being with the proper respect that one would treat another human being."
Carey emerged from her very public crash determined to put her life and her career back on track.
And in many respects, she has come out smelling like a rose. Virgin Records, stung by the disappointing performance of "Glitter," bought out Carey's contract, reportedly paying her $28 million.
Then Carey signed with Island Def Jam, netting what's been reported as a $20 million deal for three albums.
"Charmbracelet," her first release under the Island/Def Jam deal, however, has delivered mixed results.
Released in December, its first two singles, "Through The Rain" and "Boy (I Need You)," fizzled. Sales of the CD, however, have topped 1 million.
And now "Charmbracelet" is getting a second life.
Carey released a new version of the CD on July 29, adding four tracks, including her recent Top 5 hit duet with Busta Rhymes, "I Know What You Want." The song initially appeared only on Rhymes' CD, "It Ain't Safe No More."
Still, Carey's level of popularity remains under question, especially in light of her decision this spring to downsize a U.S. tour of arenas and instead play theaters.
The singer, though, said her decision to play smaller venues was not based on slow ticket sales. Instead, it's a sign of her independence as an artist, as she chose to play venues where she could interact with her audience.
"I feel like at this point in my life, I'm in control," Carey said. "I'm in the driver's seat, and I can dictate what I want to do.
"So if I want to do something that showcases my talent as a singer and songwriter, yet also lets me have my personality, fun moments and the more theatrical stuff and the audience interaction, it's just the perfect thing for me to do."

COMEBACK TOUR
After Several Setbacks, Mariah Carey Returns With Emphasis on Fans
By Bill Dean - The Ledger
She's one of the most successful singers in the world. She's had 15 No. 1 hits -- more than any other female singer.
And with sales of 150 million albums in the 1990s, Mariah Carey's reign was solidified when Billboard magazine named her "Artist of the Decade" for the 1990s.
That was before her brand of dance pop gave way to harder-edged sounds from such newcomers as Christina Aguilera, however.
And it was before "Glitter," the failed 2001 album and film that preceded her public dumping by EMI Records -- which paid her a reported $28 million simply to leave.
And it was before an emotional breakdown in 2001, which followed a public meltdown on MTV's "Total Request Live" and climaxed with her checking into a hospital.
But now Carey, whose current tour brings her to Orlando on Saturday and Tampa on Wednesday, is literally on the comeback trail and taking her case straight to fans.
Her new record label, Island/Def Jam, released Carey's most recent album "Charmbracelet" last December.
While it didn't return her to the days of "Daydream," the 1995 smash that sold more than 9 million copies, "Charmbracelet" did enter Billboard's Hot 200 albums chart at No. 3 and has since sold more than 1 million copies.
And though it didn't win unanimously glowing reviews, "Charmbracelet" didn't receive the near-universal bashing that "Glitter" did.
Carey recorded the album as the next step in her evolution as a singer, she told The New York Times, rather than as a spiteful response to her exit from EMI.
"I didn't do it to answer people, or to justify my validity as an artist," Carey said. "It really was just about an emotional outlet for me."
While Carey's current tour has her playing mostly theaters as opposed to arenas, it returns her to a medium long considered among her best, and in venues where the pressure is less than it would be in cavernous coliseums.
"This particular tour, being in the more intimate venues, does something different to me as an artist and as a performer, rather than being in a vacuous arena," Carey told The Hollywood Reporter.
"I can see people in row 15 singing the lyrics to an obscure album cut and see people with fan-club shirts 20 rows back," she said. "That makes me feel good."
Though just 33 years old, Carey's career has already become one of the more storied in pop/rock.
She moved to New York City at age 17 to pursue a music career, and sang backup for such singers as Brenda K. Starr.
In a story repeated so often it has become part of modern-pop lore, Starr passed Carey's demo tape on to Sony Music executive Tommy Mottola at a party -- who was so impressed upon hearing it on the way home that he ordered his limo driver to return to the party so he could meet Carey.
Mottola later signed Carey to two contracts: the first to record albums for Columbia Records, the second to be his wife.
Years later, after Carey had surpassed Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and Madonna in her number of songs to hit No. 1, both unions were over.
Now in the middle of what may be her most soul-satisfying comeback, Carey has learned to balance such amazing highs with inevitable lows.
"The way I look at it is, you take the good with the bad," she told Maxim magazine, in a September cover story.
"We're all human and we all go through good times and difficult times.
"But in the end it's all about getting up the right way. My song `Through the Rain' is about going through all of these things."

Mariah Carey gets her act together with help from fans
By MICHAEL D. CLARK - Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle
The key to "divadom" is the ability to reinvent oneself. Prissy, trampy, down-to-earth and unapproachable are just some of the personas Mariah Carey used to become the most successful female artist of the ’90s. Carey had 15 No. 1 singles and pushed past the Beatles with the most cumulative weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with dance hits like Emotion and Heartbreaker.
Two years ago, the entertainer took on a role most people would avoid: woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Weeks before the release of her movie Glitter and its accompanying soundtrack, Carey suffered a meltdown that many thought would be a career-killer.
These days Carey is working on a new persona: survivor. In December she released Charmbracelet, her first record for Island / Def Jam Records; it’s sold more than 500,000 copies.
Currently on her first tour in three years, which includes a stop tonight at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands, Carey took a few minutes to talk about performing and upcoming projects, as well as to answer questions about "the episode."
Q: What tidbits can you give away to tease fans about what to expect from your tour?
A: One of the cool things was being able to have fans actually vote for their favorite songs on my Web site (www.mariahcarey.com). That is the interactive portion of my show.
Also, in each city there will be a list of the top four songs that aren’t making it onto the list. The fans in that city (at the show) will get to vote, and then I’ll do that song specifically that night.
Q: Have you been surprised at what’s been requested?
A: I knew a lot of the songs would get picked, like Heartbreaker, Fantasy and Hero, but I didn't realize that Hero would win by such a landslide. It's unbelievable.
Q: What about the first couple of albums, 1990's self-titled debut and 1991's Emotions? Do those songs get as many votes as something from Charmbracelet?
A: It's funny. Charmbracelet gets a lot of votes for different album cuts. Like I Know What You Want with Busta Rhymes gets a lot of votes, as well as the really big hits. But I can't do every song that's getting voted for, so we're getting pretty specific.
Q: Were you concerned that you were going to lose momentum because there was such a lull between when Charmbracelet was released and when you went out on tour?
A: Not really. I don't even really think about stuff like that, to be honest with you. I just sort of go about my business and do what I want (laughs).
Q: Are you enjoying being out live like this? You've done a lot of studio work and behind-the-camera stuff. How does moving around this much compare to that?
A: I think it's about the same amount of work, but it's almost more enjoyable in some ways because you get to be right there with the fans. That's something that's irreplaceable. This tour is so different because it is very intimate. By the end of the show you know all the singers and the dancers and the band members. We just have a good time. I kind of take one day at a time. I'm that kind of person.
Q: Do you feel that whatever happened a few years ago and whatever troubles you were having, are they gone from your life now?
A: You know what? It's gone for me, but people still want to ask about it. It's like being asked the question, "When did you first know you wanted to be a singer?" It's that kind of tedious stuff, but what are you going to do? That's the way it is.
Q: In your own mind, is it gone? You have a new record label, new movie opportunities, a big tour and the success of Charmbracelet. Does it feel like a new beginning?
A: I would say Charmbracelet was definitely a new beginning for me, especially because it's such a personal album. It's sort of like a new beginning, but getting back to basics as well.
Q: What about your new movie, The Sweet Science?
A: It's about women boxing. I play a boxer. I'm not supposed to tell that much about it, but it's being cast right now. It's still in the beginning stages.
Q: It sounds like a lot of time in the gym following the tour.
A: Yes. Exactly. You got that right. (laughs)

Important mission
You all probably read the article from Malcolm Mayhew Star-Telegram Staff Writer, if not, here's the link:
http://www.dfw.com/mld/startelegram/living/6628795.htm
We must do something about that and here's a way for payback:
As this guy wrote this: "including Can't Take That Away, a new ballad.", we can show to his newspaper how amateurish his work is.  So, we need to e-mail here: Craig Diebel - General Manager: cdiebel@knightridder.com and here:
http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/contact_us/feedback/
In the subject of the e-mail we must write: "The lack of research of Malcolm Mayhew" or "Malcolm Mayhew, an amateur".
We must write the e-mail without being rude or offensive, but showing calmly the lack of research of Malcolm Mayhew and show that he did not like Mariah from the start.
I know you have all enough ideas without being rude and not critisize the article, only the lack of research of the guy they paid to review the concert.  Also only e-mail with .com or .net or .org e-mails, like hotmail.com, yahoo.com, aol.com etc...
Please spread the word.  Thanks guys.  Fan power.

A beautiful fan story
Here's what I read on MariahCarey.com message board:

"I cant believe this all just happened to me! I flew to Phoenix with my mom to see Mariah's concert. We checked into our hotel and told the guy that we were in town to see Mariah Carey. He turned red and told me "you might be a lot closer than you might think"... I started freaking out!!!
Then I saw Blair outside the hotel! I took a pic with her and she told me that Mariuah would be coming out at around 5:30.
So... I waited for hours, and she came out and signed my MAXIM magazine and took a pic with me! She looked perfect in person; it was amazing! And then the concert was incredible..and so was the meet and greet! I am still trying to comprehend everything that happened!!!"

Mariah Carries On
By Chris Gardner
Los Angeles (Hollywood Reporter) - Mariah Carey was riding high last week after she completed two shows at the Universal Amphitheater near Hollywood.
"It was a very feisty crowd tonight," Carey said Thursday, perched on a velvet couch in her dressing room after the second night. "Monday night was a fun crowd as well, so I was expecting more of an industry crowd tonight, and I was pleasantly surprised. Even though there were some industry people here, there were still so many real fans that it was a great show -- it didn't feel so corporate."
The songbird was in the midst of her first U.S. tour in three years (with 11 dates left to go), and thanks to the scaled-back settings, she couldn't be happier.
"I am having so much more fun onstage this time around because of the combination of being able to do the old songs, showcasing the new material and the energy of the audience," said Carey, who had just been belting out everything from "Hero" to "Honey" for ticket-holders including Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and Prince, who also caught a piece of Monday's show.
"This particular tour, being in the more intimate venues, does something different to me as an artist and as a performer, rather than being in a vacuous arena," said Carey, who scrapped initial plans for a more elaborate tour partly because of weak demand. "I can see people in row 15 singing the lyrics to an obscure album cut and see people with fan club shirts 20 rows back -- that makes me feel good."
So what does Carey think of all the star-making television vehicles such as "Idol" or "American Juniors?"
"Randy keeps me abreast of all those things," she said. "You know, whatever works. For this moment, those things are popular, so that's cool. I'm fine with that."
Carey was also upbeat about the upcoming release of "Mariah Carey -- The Remixes," a dance and workout double CD from her former label Sony.
"You get all the hip-hop versions, like 'Heartbreaker" with Missy (Elliott) and Brat and 'Thank God I Found You' with Nas and Joe, 'Honey' the So-So Def remix, but then there all the house versions with people like Junior (Vasquez)," she said. "All those records bring back memories, but they are still good today and I've always wanted to do a remix album."

Carey delivers top-notch performance
Theresa Cano - azcentral.com
The past two years may have been shaky ones for Mariah Carey but in front of a packed Dodge Theatre Saturday night, the sultry diva was nothing short of solid.
Surrounded by dancers and a circle of beefy bodyguards, Carey hit a confident stride as she walked down one of the theater’s aisles to take the stage. The noise level from her adoring, supportive fans was deafening throughout the night.
Despite a lavish stage production which included nine dancers, video snippets, oversized lounge chairs, eight costume changes, circus props and city street scene, the show never failed to showcase Carey’s famous five-octave voice first and foremost. The pop princess sounded like her hit making self of the ‘90s as she wrapped herself around one self-motivating ballad after the other.
Carey’s voice was in top-notch form throughout the 100-minute plus performance. While the setlist included a healthy number of tracks from her new album, Charmbracelet, she didn’t disappoint fans who wanted to hear her hits. ‘Dreamlover,’ ‘My All,’ ‘Make It Happen’ and ‘Heartbreaker,’ were just some of the songs that had the crowd singing along to every word.
One thing that was undeniable about the show was the dedication and love that Carey’s fans have for the artist. The audience ranged from toddlers to seniors, but Carey’s most passionate fan base seemed to be those in their early twenties to early thirties. Many in the crowd could hardly contain their excitement long before the show began and once it did, their level of enthusiasm was off the charts.
While Carey had the crowd grooving to her dance friendly hits like “Honey” and the infectious “Fantasy,” it was on the ballads where she really seemed to connect with the crowd. She sang one self-empowering song after the other with the sincerity of someone who really lived and believed in the words she was singing.
‘Can’t Take That Away,’ moved Carey to fall to her knees as she sang the song’s personal lyrics. On ‘Subtle Invitation,’ she was lowered from the ceiling on a white silken swing and gently placed atop a grand piano.
Carey’s banter seemed mostly staged, but she seemed genuinely sincere as she showered the crowd with ‘thank you’s’ and ‘I love you too’s.’ It was evident that she is aware of the fact that while she took a beating in the media during her trials and tribulations of the past two years, her fans never failed to support the beauty with the big voice.
Carey seemed to relish in the intimacy of the smaller venue. She would get a shocked look on her face when the audience would roar in approval as she sang. Mariah flashed her million dollar smile and waved continually to her adoring following.
Mariah’s four back up singers were phenomenal, especially the charismatic and uber-talented Trey Lorenz. Just as he did 11 years before on “MTV Unplugged,” Lorenz joined Carey during a stunning rendition of ‘I’ll Be There.'
Carey tapped into the emotional soul of Def Leppard’s power ballad, ‘Bringing On The Heartbreak,’ and unleashed an achingly beautiful version of the song. Finishing out the night with ‘Hero,’ Carey stood confidently and belted out the song, which reinforces the ideas of loving and believing in yourself. While it may be a personal anthem to many of those who were in attendance Saturday night, it seemed as though the song’s theme has hit home for no one more so than its singer herself.

Today's Top Story - Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is putting some rumors to rest, letting her hair down, and letting "Extra" inside her dressing room. Find out what happened behind the closed doors.
Mariah Carey is reclaiming the stage for her "Making It Happen" tour - her first in three years. Minutes after hitting the stage, a sexy Mariah invited "Extra" inside her dressing room, where she admitted she's thrilled to be back on tour and to be the current Maxim Magazine cover girl.
She says, "Yeah it was fun. Anytime I get a chance to ride around in water it's always a good thing."

Besides posing for some seriously sexy photos, the diva tells the men's magazine that she has no idea why rapper Eminem took a swipe at her in his song, "Superman." She says she knows the rapper, but the two never had any sexual encounter.
Mariah says, "There's always going to be rumors about celebrities, no matter who they are. Some of them are real; some of them are going to be fake. I can't live my life worrying about that because I've been in the public eye too long and I'm used to that."
Mariah also reveals that life with former husband Tommy Mattola taught her that record executives are brutal. But although she's learned from the past, she's not ready to get hitched anytime soon. She says, "I don't know, it depends on the person."
For now, Mariah is happily single and sweating over a new album, "Mariah Carey the Re-Mixes." She says, "Right now I'm using it for my workout because it just doesn't stop."
Kind of like Mariah herself.

Mariah Carey in Concert
By Gerry Gittelson - Staff Writer
Mariah Carey, the '90s queen of pop who remains the best-selling female performer of all time, isn't quite ready to pass the crown.
Relatively inactive as a live performer over the past three years, Carey, like all of us, has seen Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson blossom in her wake.
Nevertheless, Carey proved vital as ever during a well-received, sold-out concert at Universal Amphitheatre on Monday, the first of a two-night engagement that concludes today.
The 32-year-old New Yorker, touring in support of her newest release, "Charmbracelet," tore through a 100-minute set featuring many of her No. 1 hits such as "Vision of Love" and "Fantasy."
And while there were lots of dancers, props and video displays, Carey provided a somber theme of perseverance and faith with such spiritual selections as "Through the Rain" and the touching '"My Saving Grace."
Yes, Carey's much-publicized emotional breakdown in 2001 hasn't been forgotten. But the fact is, Carey has never looked or sounded better. Perfectly fit, tanned and sexy, Carey proved ready for action, and she certainly doesn't seem intimidated by her supposed competitors, who might have surpassed her on the sales charts -- but certainly not on stage.
Carey hit her high notes beautifully, to the delight of the mostly young, female crowd. And her between-songs banter was warm, engaging and charismatic. Carey's growth as a concert performer is especially notable because in the past, her biggest weakness might have been a mild failure to connect with audiences.
However, such shyness has disappeared. Carey was in control of the room Monday -- and Spears and company should have been there taking notes.
While Carey's peaks were mighty impressive, there were a few valleys. The performance was bit ill-paced, partly because Carey allowed her backup musicians too much of the spotlight, as she occasionally disappeared off stage for five or 10 minutes at a time.
But things remained interesting because Carey always returned in a new, wildly revealing outfit, and it was never too long before another sing-along hit such as "Hero" arrived.
Among the best moments was a wonderful version of "Bringin' on the Heartbreak," a cover of British rock band Def Leppard's early hit -- proof positive Carey is certainly more than a balladeer.
Mariah Carey is back, big-time. And her adoring, loyal fans, many of whom carried large cardboard signs welcoming her return, couldn't be happier.

Back in the light
IT'S mystifying why Mariah Carey doesn't do more live appearances. The two most defining moments in her career were live ones. Though she'd already had a string of No. 1 hits, it was her MTV Unplugged version of I'll Be There that helped make her a household name in 1992. And it was her stunning return to form singing Hero on the post-Sept 11 A Tribute To Heroes that erased much of her recent bad publicity. Forget breakdowns and contracts and bad movies; in four minutes on Sept 18, 2001, Carey reminded fans of why they fell in love with her voice in the first place. Now Carey has been touring in Japan and the US, promoting her new album, Charmbracelet. The obstacle, she says, is properly resting and taking care of her legendary five-octave voice. It makes it impossible for her to do long strings of back-to-back shows, which makes touring more expensive and logistically complicated. "I need one or two days off between shows," she says. The Tribute to Heroes benefit found her on the same bill as Bruce Springsteen, U2, Tom Petty, Neil Young and more, all still shell-shocked by the terrorist attacks. "It was a very intense moment. I live right by Ground Zero. When I was called to do the show, I said of course I would," she says.
"Hero was the song they wanted and it seemed like the most appropriate song to do. It was intense to be in that room with all those talented people for one cause." It was also the end of a dark era. A decade of hits – One Sweet Day, Butterfly, Someday, Love Takes Time – along with a marriage and a nasty divorce from record exec Tommy Mottola made her among the most famous people on the planet for reasons other than her voice. By 2001, Carey had run herself ragged and was on the brink of collapse. She made bizarre TV appearances and posted rambling notes on her website that had fans genuinely scared for her well-being. With a movie bomb in Glitter and a falling out with her record label, Carey was in the worst trouble of her career. That made it especially meaningful to her when she came out and shone. "Of course it would be a vindicating moment," she says. "It's so difficult to live in the public eye. People just believe everything they read and what they see on TV." Fans also fear that she's lost her way. She has been accused of letting others call the shots; rather than following her own instincts, at times she seems to be trying to mould herself to whatever's hot at the moment. "I don't feel that way with the Charmbracelet album at all. I have a wide variety of influences," she says. "I love hip hop music and always have. I've been doing collaborations with hip hop artistes since Old Dirty Bastard in 1996 with Fantasy. "I have the capacity to do a gospel-influenced ballad or a hip hop influenced record. I don't feel I should be limited into doing one or the other. Charmbracelet, is the closest I've gotten to pleasing both sides of the spectrum, as well as myself." It has been a prolific time for Carey, who already is in the middle of her next album, along with an album of remixes due out later this year. "I'm writing right now. The remixes are coming out regardless. That's a contractual Sony thing. So those are coming out either way," she says. "I don't know about a (new) album this year." Fans can go to her website to vote on what songs they want to hear in each city. And she has learned, she says, from the mistakes she has made in the past. "I'm in a very good space in my life," she says. "This is so much fun touring. I've learned so much about just having to slow down and take rests and stuff like that. "It's about treating myself like a human being and not just an object." Indeed Mariah's recent 10-date tour of Japan was a smash, playing to sold out audiences. To say the tour was a success would be an understatement. One had to be living in a cave to not know that Mariah Carey was in the country! Mariah received daily mention in the press there – with unanimous positive reaction to her show.
Bringin On The Heartbreak has already entered the Top 20 on both the radio airplay and video charts in Japan. Carey's concert was elaborately planned – it felt more like a Broadway musical than a concert according to observers. The press in Japan have unanimously declared her golden voice amazingly stimulating, visually stunning and utterly entertaining. THE STUFF OF LEGEND Mariah Carey's career is truly the stuff of legend. Since she began her career, Mariah has since become the best-selling female performer of all time, with an incredible 15 No. 1 singles and two Grammy Awards. Along the way she became the only artiste to top the charts in each year of the 1990s, and, with Heartbreaker, she pushed ahead of the Beatles as the artiste with the most cumulative weeks spent atop Billboards Hot 100 Singles chart.
Possessing a spectacular five-octave range, Mariah is equally at home with sweeping ballads and pop, often incorporating elements of dance and hip hop into the mix. Perhaps even more impressive, she composes all of her own material.
Mariah's new album features the songstress writing and co-producing with such A-list names as Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Jermaine Dupri among others. The album, which is lyrically very personal, showcases Mariah's stunning voice, prolific songwriting and incredible versatility. This is fully evident on the first single, the sweeping epic ballad, Through The Rain which is a perfect example of what Mariah does best.
Born in Long Island, NY, as the daughter of a former opera singer and vocal coach – and named after the song They Call the Wind Mariah from the popular Lerner and Loewe musical Paint Your Wagon.
Mariah began singing at the age of four, and was writing her own songs by the time she was attending Oldfield Middle School. She moved to New York City, the day after graduating from high school. Honing her songwriting skills and lending her vocals to several local acts, she first garnered industry attention when singing backup for Brenda K. Starr, who gave Mariah's demo tape to Sony Music Entertainment chief Tommy Mottola at a party. As legend has it, Mottola played the demo on his ride home and ordered his driver to immediately return to the party so that he could meet the young singer. Soon afterwards, Mottola signed Mariah to a Columbia Records contract.
Mariah's self-titled Columbia debut, released in 1990, spawned an extraordinary four No.1 singles: Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, Someday and I Don't Wanna Cry, and led to Grammy Awards for Best New Artiste and Best Female Vocalist. The following year's album, Emotions, was another smash, with the title track scoring her fifth consecutive No.1 single and two other titles Can't Let Go and Make It Happen reaching the Top Five. Her next release, 1992s MTV Unplugged EP, scored another No.1 with her cover of the Jackson 5's I'll Be There. Music Box (1993) became her biggest seller to date, with Dreamlover and Hero again topping the charts, and was followed by 1994's Merry Christmas, which contained another hit with All I Want for Christmas is You. Daydream (1995) contained the club-friendly Fantasy, which debuted at No.1 making Mariah the second artiste in history, and the first female performer, to accomplish that feat. The follow-up single, One Sweet Day (recorded with Boyz II Men), followed suit and stayed at the top of the charts for a record 16 weeks.
Butterfly (1997) revealed an even greater hip hop flavour than its predecessor, scoring hits with Honey and My All. The following year witnessed the release of greatest hits collection No.1s, which included a new song, When You Believe (from the film The Prince of Egypt), a duet with Whitney Houston which paired the two most successful female recording artistes in pop history. Rainbow, with its chart-topping tune Heartbreaker, followed in 1999.
In 2001, Mariah signed with Virgin Records, which released Glitter, the soundtrack album to the film of the same name, with Mariah in her first lead acting role. She has also been featured in the films The Bachelor (1999) and Wisegirls (2002).
Mariah has garnered many accolades throughout her career including two Grammy Awards, eight American Music Awards, Billboard's ‘Artiste of the Decade' Award and the World Music Award for ‘World's Best Selling Female Artiste of the Millennium' to name a few. Mariah's many accomplishments and unprecedented career success stand as a testament to her creativity and talent. That they represent only the beginning is all the more impressive.

Mariah: I'm a diva
Pop superstar Mariah Carey has confessed she is a diva. The sexy singer has often faced accusations of diva-like behaviour as she rose to chart-topping success. But unlike Jennifer Lopez and many other fellow superstars, Mariah declares that the title is fitting for her - even if her definition differs to others. She says, "Everybody's a diva these days. You can be the diva of garbagewomen - it doesn't matter. It's a little bit tired. "When I was growing up, my mother was an opera singer, so I connected divas to someone who can really sing and is a bit grandiose. So I guess that would be me. But she warns fans not to believe everything they read about her; "There are rumours about how I walked into a hotel and insisted on completely redecorating a room before I stayed there. "Even funnier is that apparently I also refuse to walk on carpeting. So I guess I hover. How do people think I get from Point A to Point B?"

2nd wind for Mariah
Larry Rodgers - The Arizona Republic
It's hard to doubt Mariah Carey when she says she can't walk away from music, movies and love - even after hospitalization for exhaustion, the loss of history's biggest record contract, critical disdain for her semi-autobiographical film, Glitter, and breakups with her husband and subsequent boyfriend.
Buoyed by a new $20 million recording deal, a triple-platinum CD and a less-hectic schedule, Carey has embarked on her most extensive concert tour. The 52-date trek visits U.S. theaters through September (including Phoenix's Dodge Theatre on Saturday), then arenas and stadiums in Europe and Asia.
Positive reviews for her film role in last year's WiseGirls have encouraged the New York-born Carey to consider more acting after 2001's ill-fated Glitter.
As for romance, after the failure of her five-year marriage to recording mogul Tommy Mottola in 1998 and her breakup with boyfriend Luis Miguel, Carey, 33, says she's ready for a break.
Emerging from last year's hospitalization for what she called "complete exhaustion," the singer views her return to the stage as just what the doctor ordered.
"She has not been a (heavily) touring artist in the past," says Carey's manager, John Marx of the William Morris Agency. "She's enjoying it, and she's working more dates than she ever has."
Marx disputed reports that slow ticket sales caused Carey to downsize her U.S. shows, saying, "She was getting a lot of information from the fans, that they wanted to see her in smaller venues."
Carey recently discussed the ups and downs of her career and personal life, as well as what's on the horizon.
How are you feeling these days? Are your batteries recharged?
They have been for quite some time, thank you.
What are you doing differently to avoid exhaustion?
I kind of had to put everybody in check who was surrounding me. People had to realize that I'm a human being as well as someone who is in the public eye and a celebrity.
It's not all about working me to death, literally. It's about giving me some space, some time to actually have a couple of vacations a year, just to take a breather, which I never ever did before. I would just work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and that's not healthy for anybody.
Some people are calling your latest CD, Charmbracelet, a comeback. Do you think the reports of your recent ups and downs have been overblown?
I do look at it like it's been overblown, but if people choose to call it a comeback album, then that's fine. This album, in a lot of ways, is coming back to my roots.
You could have walked away from everything, relaxed and wealthy, before entering this new record deal. Why do it all again?
Because music is what I love, and it's hard to walk away from what you love. I do care about my fans, and I know that they wanted me to make a new record, and I wanted - and needed - to make a new record.
What approach did you take to creating Charmbracelet?
The experience of making this record was so cathartic for me. Just being honest with the lyrics and singing from my heart on songs like My Saving Grace and Sunflowers for Alfred Roy - which I wrote for my father after he passed away last year - songs that I needed to write. I needed to sing those songs, and that's why I did it.
You've said that pain sometimes produces great art. Are there songs on the new CD that reflect that?
My Saving Grace is very autobiographical. It kind of tells my whole story and how, when going through problems, I always lean on my faith and how strong an element faith is in my life.
Sunflowers for Alfred Roy is something that I wrote for my father, in honor of him. . . . He was very sick. He was in the hospital for a while, and we were there together.
We hadn't had that close of a relationship, but we got to know each other a lot better than we ever had, and I'm very grateful for that. So going through that experience helped me produce something that I feel is in honor of him.
After your experience with Glitter, how do you view the film industry? Did you get soured by the negative reviews, or are you still optimistic about working in movies?
I was just happy that I had done WiseGirls. It was an indie project that I did with Mira Sorvino and Melora Walters. It got really good reviews in the Hollywood Reporter and Variety, and we went to the Sundance Film Festival with it.
I did that against everybody's wishes, and it was just something that I did for the love of that role. I played a waitress who is a drug dealer from Staten Island, so it was completely different from the Mariah Carey image.
I think that the lesson I learned from being involved with the first movie (Glitter) was that you don't do something just because it's what everybody says you should do. You don't have to just play a singer and be in some homogenized Hollywood situation because people tell you it's the right thing to do. I learned a lesson that it's all about art and all about doing what's going to be the best thing for you as an artist, creatively.
There's been speculation that your decision to play smaller venues might be due to slow ticket sales. Could you clarify that?
In all honesty, it's going to be so much more intimate and so much easier for me, because I tend to micromanage things, and that's what can contribute to my overextending myself. I don't want to do that this time around. I don't want to be worrying about the sound man, worrying about pyro stuff. I don't want to be doing things that are not about just performing and relaxing within my performance.
My fans want to see me in this type of a setting, as opposed to an impersonal venue where they miss half of what's being said onstage and the sound is all boomy. So it's my decision to do that. I can play arenas if I want; that's not the question.
You're in your 30s now, as many of your original fans are. Do you see your concert audiences getting older?
I pretty much see all ages and all different demographics. It's cool, as a multiracial person, to be able to see all different races, creeds and colors out there.
You write most of your own material. Is that one thing that sets you apart from other "divas"?
It's something that's such a part of me that I wouldn't even feel like a whole person if I couldn't do it. It really is something that's always been a healing savior for me. When I go into the creative mode and I start writing, it takes me to another level and I feel like a totally different person. . . . So it does set me apart in that way.
You've been through a divorce and a breakup in recent years. Are you still optimistic about finding love?
Yeah, (but) I'm not obsessed with it, like the public is. Every magazine is like, "Who's so-and-so dating?" and, "What's going on with these two lovebirds?" That's not my focus. I know it's hard for people to believe that about a woman, because we're all supposed to be crying out and in need (laughs). It's more about being at peace with myself.
Are you in a relationship now, or are you taking a break?
Yeah, just taking a little break.

Mariah Carey has broken her moratorium on speaking about ex-husband Sony Music mogul Tommy Mottola in the September issue of Maxim. Asked what lessons matrimony taught her, the diva sensibly responds, ``To stay away from it!'' Having described the relationship as ``confining,'' she explains, ``I had to wear turtlenecks and long pants, and that wasn't me.'' Apparently not.

Mariah pretty in pink and sugary sweet
Neva Chonin, Chronicle Pop Music Critic
No Mariah Carey show would be complete without over-the-top antics, and Wednesday's show at Concord's Chronicle Pavilion didn't disappoint.
Standing in front of a starry backdrop, a five-piece band, four backup singers and 10 dancers dressed as circus performers, Carey finished her third ballad of the night and peered at one of the many fan-waved signs dotting the audience.
"Mariah for governor," she read, amused. "Not sure I'd make it. I barely made it through school. But," she added, with a triumphant flourish, "I'm here. "
She was, indeed. And that's something.
Carey has always suffered from a credibility problem, dismissed as a diva who channeled her powerful voice into the prosaic pop. The people loved her, though, and made her the best-selling female singer of the '90s.
Disaster struck in 2001 after her debut as a cinematic leading lady, in "Glitter," and its titular album crashed and burned. Her label, Virgin, paid her more than $29 million to go away. Rumors of physical and mental breakdown followed, fueled by a manic appearance on MTV's "Total Request Live."
Late last year, Carey made a comeback bid with "Charmbracelet" on Island/Def Jam; reviews were mixed. Now, her first major American tour in three years has been progressively downsized, allegedly because Carey wanted "intimate" performances.
Her intimate Concord show didn't sell out, though it was full enough to avoid disgrace and provide a large and enthusiastic reception for the singer's signature stratospheric trills and hyper-sleek sexuality. Carey gave loyal fans what they wanted, cantering through eight provocative costume changes that emphasized legs and cleavage while letting her five-octave voice wring every song dry.
Then there was the stage show. Flanked by an armada of bodyguards, Carey opened her 110-minute performance by approaching her Moulin Rouge-meets-the- big-top set through the center of the crowd, singing the hit "Heartbreaker." A cadre of dancers surrounded her onstage, playing paparazzi in a pointed reminder of Carey's star status. To the side, another dancer dressed as a ringmaster mimed painting the first of many Mariah portraits.
Two numbers later, Carey settled into a pink overstuffed chair (set incongruously among the circus props), a glass of white wine with a straw at her side, to deliver an overwrought rendition of "Charmbracelet's" "Through the Rain" ("about keeping your faith").
"It is so good to be here tonight. I just love this area," she sighed. Then, helpfully, "The Bay Area."
Carey went on to prove that she's still capable of formidable displays of technique, bending one note into six in a vocal conceit that's been imitated by every aspiring pop diva to cross the "American Idol" stage.
The concert leaned heavily on the singer's well-known, voice-displaying ballads, peppered with several selections from "Charmbracelet." For "Subtle Invitation," she descended from the rafters in a huge white sash, then draped herself across a pink-starred grand piano in a skintight white minidress. Ah, subtlety.
A vignette called "The Marionette Show" depicted a human puppet in clown makeup being manipulated by suited men on stilts while Carey sang "Clown" -- supposedly a jab at Eminem, who denigrated Carey during his "Eminem Show" tour.
To allow time for costume changes, Carey frequently surrendered the stage to videos and her backup singers and dancers. The star's own restrained dancing was delightfully punctuated by her dashing from one end of the stage to the other, looking for all the world like a fleeing heroine in a horror film.
Online fans voted on a favorite song for each night's set list (at the Pavilion, they opted for "Can't Take That Away.") Other audience favorites included "Dreamlover," Carey's cover of "I'll Be There" and a set-closing, inspirational dance rendition of "Make It Happen."
Those who came hoping to see an emotional meltdown left disappointed. Carey was cheerful and upbeat, from her repeated declarations that "It's all jokes and fun up here!" to paeans to endurance like the gospel-infused ballad "My Saving Grace," which came complete with a truncated life-of-Mariah video showcasing the star's journey through the valley of career darkness and back again.
Hip-hop songs punctuated the balladic excess, including "Honey" (with dancers performing martial-arts maneuvers) and the current hit "I Know What You Want," featuring a video of rappers Busta Rhymes and Rah Digga. Carey appeared for only one verse, clad in a clingy tank top and cutoff jeans.
Carey pulled out whatever stops were left with a rambunctious cover of Def Leppard's "Bringin' On the Heartbreak" and the dance tune "Fantasy," with its addictive sample of the Tom Tom Club's "Genius of Love."
The night ended with Carey in a white feathered gown, singing an encore double-header of "Vision of Love" and a histrionic "Hero," which she lavishly dedicated to her fans.
She has survived, but she hasn't grown. Carey is still mired in a sugary pop approach that leaches the heart out of what should be a dynamic voice. If the lady has soul, it's lost in theatrical frippery that's great for its camp value but sells its artist short.

Heroes comment: Carey finished her third ballad of the night and peered at one of the many fan-waved signs dotting the audience. "Mariah for governor," she read, amused. "Not sure I'd make it. I barely made it through school. But," she added, with a triumphant flourish, "I'm here. " A classic!!!
"Carey went on to prove that she's still capable of formidable displays of technique, bending one note into six in a vocal conceit that's been imitated by every aspiring pop diva to cross the "American Idol" stage." Thank you Neva .

Mariah Carey Doesn't Hold High Note Record
Claims that Mariah Carey holds the world record for hitting the highest note in history and that she’s been immortalized for her vocal feat by 'The Guinness Book of World Records' are false, according to Kate Smith, spokeswoman for the record book. "It’s pure fiction. We don’t have a category for highest note by a human," Smith told the National Enquirer.

Heroes comment: Ok Kate, maybe you should add that category to The Guinness Book of World Records, oh and after all, no problem for me, if Mariah will be one day in the book or not.

Carey Comes "Alive" with brand new track
The next edition of W magazine will reveal Mariah Carey's upcoming power ballad "Alive" which she recorded live in the Bahamas. The song intially penned by Aurelius and 7 has now production notes under Chartmaker Inc and ASCAP adding the additional production of super balladeer David Foster.
The singer/songwriter discussed her future projects with W's Maggie Downer during her Charmbracelet tour in Las Vegas.
The track promised to mix live vocals with a studio beat but is "transparently honest". According to W, who heard the title mastering, the song is unlike any CAREY songs, "its refreshing to hear Carey sing folk in a ballad format" quotes W's Downer.
The opening is a guitar based ref that stops completely allowing for a lower registry Carey to pull in and continue with her mid chords staying comfortably throughout the song.
The lyrics "Soft and tender , he feels ALIVE when he dances with the moon...is whispery but candid and erotic. The track will be an teaser to her upcoming March EP "Live", a collection of LIVE songs from Carey's journey's recording LIVE music in the studio or on stage. The EP will feature 6 tracks including the highly anticipated power ballad "reach for the sky".
Alive will drop into radios on October 28, 2003. For more on this check out the October issue of W, out in newsstands next month.

Charmed Life

You've heard the songs, seen the videos, and lusted after her gams - but Mariah Carey says you ain't seen nothing yet.
Interview by Eric Alt
Photos by Antoine Verglas
Mariah Carey steels herself for the inevitable questions about her life with a laugh almost sweet enough to make us play nice. “Can’t we talk about what kind of cream I’m rubbing on my legs or something?” Though she tries to draw our attention to her body of work, who can ignore a career with such high highs (15 number one singles, best-selling female artist ever) and weird lows (her infamous TRL striptease, her struggles with exhaustion)? But Mariah has gotten up, dusted herself off, and came out singing.
First off, what question are you most sick of being asked?
Oh, my! There are a few! I don’t have one in mind, but keep going and I’ll let you know.
You’ve taken a trashing in the media these past few years. How do you keep it all in perspective?
The way I look at it is, you take the good with the bad. We’re all human, and we all go through good times and difficult times. But in the end it’s all about getting up he right way. My song “Through the Rain” (from Charmbracelet) is about going through all these things. I feel triumphant singing it.
Was there ever a particular piece of criticism that stung the most?
There were so many things. Sometimes when you’re a celebrity, people are like “Heavens to Betsy!” if you sneeze the wrong way. In reality, celebrities lead lives that don’t necessarily go in tandem with our public images. People think they know everything about you because of the way you sang “Hero.”
So are you a diva?
Everybody’s a diva these days. You can be the diva of garbage women – it doesn’t matter. It’s a little bit tired. When I was growing up, my mother was an opera singer, so I connected divas to someone who can really sing and is a bit grandiose. So I guess that would be me. There are rumors about how I walked into a hotel and insisted on completely redecorating a room before I stayed there.
So you don’t throw your weights around to get into restaurants?
No, I usually have other people take care of that for me. [laughs]
What was the most outrageous lie you head about yourself?
That I refuse to walk on grass. Even funnier is that apparently I also refuse to walk on carpeting. So I guess I hover. [laughs] How do people think I get from Point A to Point B?
But sometimes it’s another celebrity taking potshots at you. Any reason why Eminem would take a lyrical swipe at you in his song “Superman”?
Yeah, it happened. Did I have a sexual relationship with him? No, I didn’t I knew him, I hung out with him a few times, but nothing sexual occurred. I’d admit it if it did, but it didn’t. And that’s what I was so upset about the whole thing, because I was like, “Look, if I had an intimate relationship with the person, that would be one thing, but…” Maybe he thought because nothing happened he’d look bad or something.
Dare we even dig up Glitter?
C’mon, don’t do that to me!
I think we’ve found that question you hate most!
I’m bored talking about it. It was two years ago. There are so many positive things to talk about! All I can say is that I couldn’t have had the cards more stacked against me – the soundtrack came out the week of September 11th, and I had just been hospitalized for exhaustion. What could I do? Kids come up all the time and tell me they loved the movie. What are you gonna say? It’s funny!
What it tougher to take because the movie reflected your life story?
It really didn’t. The only thing was that the girl was interracial and a singer. My life story would be a hell of a lot more interesting.
Did that sour you on acting, or do you want to keep doing it?
I did a movie called Wisegirls with Mira Sorvino that was a great experience. It epitomized why I want to pursue acting. It was this little indie film, and it got some good reviews. We went to Sundance and got a standing ovation. I got to play a character that was so far from who I am. She’s a drug-dealing waitress from Staten Island who’s like [in a goombah accent] a friggin’ broad, ya know? It allowed me not to be Mariah Carey for a minute. Next I’m going this movie called Sweet Science. My character’s a boxer…a really bad one. It’s a romantic comedy.
Speaking of you and cameras, your videos do a breathtaking job of revealing you to the public.
I know I have this image that’s sexy. But I’m basically like Mary Poppins. That’s my nick-name! I’m prudish. It’s like playing dress-up. When you go through difficult stuff as a kid sometimes your childhood stays with you. I’ve hung on to that. There was a period when I was in a relationship that was confining, where I had to wear turtlenecks and long pants, and that wasn’t me. So when I broke out of that – around the time of the “Honey” video, where I jump out of the water like a secret agent – everybody was shocked. But that was the real me coming out.
Describe the lean yours for us.
Even struggling, I always felt like I was going to get past it. I remember having one pair of shoes that I had to walk to work in. I worked at a sports bar, and my job was to sit there in a tight T-shirt and sell shirts to guys. But these shoes were my mom’s and a size too small. My toes would be poking through the front, and I’d be trudging through the snow.
You were married at age 23 to Tommy Mottola, then chairman of Sony Music Entertainment. What do you learn about marriage?
To say away from it! [laughs] I would marry again if it were about having kids, but other than that I can’t see myself doing it.
And what did the experience teach you about record executives?
That they’re brutal! I would hear the way they talk about the artist’ backs because I had the unique position of being there behind closed doors. It wasn’t pretty.
Now that you’re a powerful singer, songwriter, and producers, do you have a dream collaborator?
I’ve always been a fan of Stevie Wonder, and we’ve always talked about working together. I’ve worked with so many people it’s just unbelievable – everyone from Snoop Dogg and Jay-Z to Ol’ Dirty Bastard and Pavarotti.
What’s your best ODB story?
I love him. He’s the funniest because he just doesn’t care. He’s hilarious.
Is he batshit crazy?
It depends on his mood. But he’s a really cool guy. He’s talented and…very free.
Are you keeping your eye on any up-and-coming divas?
I like Beyonce. She’s cool. I like that she writes her own songs, as opposed to people who are clearly emulating others a bit too much.
Like J.Lo? It’s been alleged that her producers stole ideas from you.
I wouldn’t want to comment on that. Sorry, just trying to abide by the laws here.
Is it true you let fans on your Web site pick the songs you sing in concert?
Yes, it’s whatever comes in the top 15. I don’t live on the Internet. I give them things like tickets, but for me to read everybody’s opinion night and day would not be good.
But you do actually post messages from time to time, right?
Yeah, that would be me.
Is it every a little weird being that accessible to your fans?
I have a Jack Russell who’s so cute. There’s this one girl in Japan who dresses up like my dog and comes to concerts. This girl has a Web site devoted to him. So that’s pretty amusing.
How much does being in the spotlight – to the extent where people dress up like your dog – make it hard for you to date?
I’m in a weird position because I started doing this so young and was so secluded, and then I was in a relationship with a much older person. I’ve never really dated. I’ve experienced people hitting on me, obviously.
How do they usually go about it?
People come up to me and ask to marry me. But it’s not that hard. Just strike up a conversation! I can talk to just about anyone. It’s not about the who’s who of my address book. It’s about who’s fun, who’s cool.
Then how about a date with us? Karaoke maybe?
It’d be fun to walk in, do it, and see everyone’s reaction. It might be something I should do.
So you don’t necessarily only want to date other celebrities?
With another celebrity, there are egos. It’s like, “Which fan came up to me and asked for an autograph and didn’t ask you?” Who really cares? It’s not about how many magazine covers I can get on with this person.
Do average guys ever hit on you?
I don’t know. Do whistling and catcalls count?
Vital Stats: Born March 27, 1970, in Huntington, New York. “I’ve been singing since I was four. My mother was an opera singer and a vocal coach, and we both pretty much knew I had a natural talent for music. Writing songs was my creative outlet. Whenever there was anything difficult going on, I turned to writing as escapism.”
Her fairy tale story: “My shoe broke onstage twice on this tour. It was very Cinderella! One night I noticed that the heel had broken off. I was hopping on one leg, trying to finish the song and laughing. So I just threw it out to the audience and gave it to a fan, then I broke the other shoe and finished the song barefoot.”
Driving herself crazy: “Being chauffeured around becomes mundane. I actually hate limos. I love to drive, even though I’m not a very good driver.”
Good sport: “I’m a fast runner. But when it comes to organized sports, I’m not good. I’m like, ‘Why is this person running toward me and what do I do now? Which goalie am I protecting?’ My brain doesn’t work that way. I know guys want to play basketball with their girlfriends, so I should pretend that I’m good at it, but the truth is I suck. I’m looking for someone to teach me.”
What she wants in a man: “Definitely a sense of humor. If somebody just sits there and talks about mundane subjects, they’re just boring as hell. Why bother?”

Mariah Carey Says She's Just Like Mary Poppins
Mariah Carey is on the cover of the new issue of Maxim magazine where she talks about her nickname Mary Poppins, gained because of her lifestyle that she insists matches the prim and propper nanny. "I know I have this image that's sexy. Bit I'm basically like Mary Poppins. That's my nickname! I'm prudish. It's like playing dress-up," Carey explained. "When you go through difficult stuff as a kid sometimes your childhood stays with you. I've hung on to that. There was a period when I was in a relationship that was confining, where I had to wear turtlenecks and long pants, and that wasn't me. 'Intimate evening' with fans suits her
By Gary Graff
Stars who exist in the multiplatinum, genre-spanning realm of Mariah Carey are conditioned to think big. But for her 2003 North American tour, the songstress has learned about downsizing.
Carey had already announced a series of arena dates when, one day at an amusement park, she encountered a fan who expressed disappointment.
"I have a really close, interactive relationship with my fans," the 33-year-old Carey says, "and I knew that she was one of those fans who's really involved and wants all the information and everything. She was telling me that she'd seen me before in concert, in a big place, and she didn't really feel the experience.
"That made me think," the singer-songwriter says. "I wanted to do this so that the fans can feel like they've really had the experience of being there with me and having an intimate evening."
Besides, Carey adds, she had already started rehearsing for the larger-venue show – which she did perform in Korea and Japan – and she was finding it "uninspiring."
"It was like a rehearsing of what I've done before," she says, "which wasn't what I wanted to do."
The new model for the North American shows comes from Carey's past. She was inspired by memories of her 1992 MTV "Unplugged" concert, which became a triple-platinum album and launched her chart-topping cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There."
"That was a very intimate performance," Carey recalls. "I didn't even know it was going to be an album – the cool thing was, people got to see me perform in an intimate setting. I'd never performed live like that, ever, and I think people who went to that show still have the memory and talk to me about it, that they enjoyed that type of venue with me."
SDSU's Open Air Theatre, where Carey performs tomorrow in her first-ever San Diego appearance, seats just under 4,800.
"So the way I look at this tour is sort of like 'Unplugged' meets cabaret," she concludes, "because we've got a big production in terms of the dancing and the whole kind of cabaret atmosphere, but also it doesn't take itself too seriously.
"And it's not like I take myself too seriously out there, either."
Carey has the credentials to be as serious as she wants, of course. The Long Island-born daughter of opera singer Patricia Carey, she emerged from singing backup for Brenda K. Starr to win a Grammy Award as Best New Artist for her nine-times-platinum debut album, "Mariah Carey" (1990).
The rest of the decade was marked by a series of achievements as wide-ranging as Carey's seven-octave voice, which includes a piercing upper register that detractors sometimes liken to a dog whistle. Nevertheless, Carey's 11 albums have sold more than 140 million units worldwide and logged 15 No. 1 hits on the Billboard charts, giving her more cumulative weeks at No. 1 than any other artist in history.
From her 2002 album "Charmbracelet," the latest single is Carey's rendition of Def Leppard's "Bringin' on the Heartache" (1995).
"A lot of people didn't even know that song," she says with a laugh. "People from the label were like, 'What song is this?,' because it's not like it was 'Pour Some Sugar on Me' (1995) or 'Photograph' (1995). It was more obscure, but it's a great song."

A pop queen's comeback
MARIAH CAREY READY TO TURN TARNISH OF 'GLITTER' INTO GOLD
By Marian Liu - Mercury News
One-time queen of pop Mariah Carey hopes to reclaim her throne.
Carey owned the '90s. Her ballads were the prom and pubescent crush soundtrack for that generation. She sold more than 150 million albums and had 15 No. 1 records, putting in the rarefied company of the Beatles and Elvis.
But the new millennium hasn't been kind. She's suffered through very public humiliation and was pushed aside by a string of younger divas -- Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé Knowles.
Now she's pushing back with a comeback tour. In the Bay Area, show was moved from the bigger HP Pavilion at San Jose to the Chronicle Pavilion at Concord for a more "intimate" experience, her handlers say.
"It's more abo
