Maybe not directly Mariah related, but
interesting
Oh, say, can she sing By Billy Heller Most eyes may be on the Patriots and Panthers leading up to Sunday's Super Bowl, Beyonc is facing as much pressure as any player: She's singing the national anthem before the game. No, she doesn't have to weigh punting or going for the first down with the championship on the line, but she has until just before kickoff to decide whether to sing live or lip-sync. Because a performer went blank - pregame show executive producer Bob Best won't name names - during the commercial break right before the anthem, "We make a 'protection copy,' " explains Best. So Beyonc cut a recording a couple of weeks back at the 20th Century Fox scoring stage in Los Angeles with a 65-piece orchestra. "We always check with the artist the day of the performance, and basically say, 'What are you comfortable with?' " says Best. "Some artists feel that they may have achieved - in their mind - perfection on the performance copy and perhaps they would not be able to reach that level in the rather stressful, rather rushed, busy environment they find themselves in." So what advice do past performers have for Beyonc? Kathie Lee Gifford, who sang the anthem nine years ago at Super Bowl XXIX, offers Beyonc the same words of wisdom she says she got from Barry Manilow (Super Bowl XVII): "No matter what, do not look up at the scoreboard telling you how many billions of people are watching the broadcast." Cheryl Ladd (Super Bowl XIV) says Beyonc doesn't need singing advice from her, but concedes "the song is a challenge because of its huge range." Beyonc should just, she says, "enjoy every second of the experience and let 'er rip." Of course, just like the game itself, things don't always go smoothly in the "Star-Spangled Banner" department. Garth Brooks left the stadium just 45 minutes before he was scheduled to sing at Super Bowl XXVII, at Pasadena's Rose Bowl, in a dispute over his music video, which he wanted NBC to play in the pregame show. That left NFL execs scrambling like a desperate quarterback - until one spotted Jon Bon Jovi in the stands and was ready to draft him into anthem duty, when Brooks was coaxed back. Another year, Julio Iglesias was going to sing the anthem, "but bowed out," says Best. "He made an attempt to do it in advance and he was concerned that his English pronunciation was not sufficient to be able to do it justice." That was the year Manilow stepped up to the mike. The humid conditions in Tampa in 1991 contributed to Whitney Houston's decision to go with the recording, and it's that performance that remains "the benchmark," notes producer Rickey Minor, who's working with Beyonc. "Singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl was one of the highlights of my career," says Houston. "Beyonc told me she remembers listening to Whitney's version over and over and over again," says Minor, "and I believe that there will be definitely some similarities based on where we are as a country, being at war. And like Whitney, Beyonc has an incredible voice." When Beyonc was rehearsing with Minor, she told him when she got to "the land of the free and the home of the brave" she wanted "all of the families who have lost loved ones [in the war] to feel that she feels passion and appreciation of their sacrifice." The first time Beyonc sang the anthem in the studio, it was almost 31/2 minutes long. "Generally they [the NFL] like it in the 2-, 21/2-minute range," says Minor, "and it was too slow for my taste too. I was falling asleep," he laughs. But the recording session wasn't all serious all the time. "At one point," says Minor, "instead of singing 'whose broad stripes and bright stars,' she sang 'whose broad stripes and broad stars,' so I told her there was one too many broads in the room.'" Vanessa Williams (Super Bowl XXX) says Beyonc has nothing to worry about. "I know she's from Houston," says Williams, "so she'll have the whole hometown girl factor, which will give her a lot of support." Among her supporters is Rudy Rasmus, the pastor of Beyonc's hometown church, where she sang in the choir at age 12. "I was proud to hear that she was selected," says Rasmus. But, he adds, "I actually would have preferred to have seen her perform during halftime." What's in a name? It might mean a win. Financial analysts have noted that which conference wins the Super Bowl affects the stock market. And a close study of the last 10 national anthem singers reveals that every time a single-named singer has performed (Cher, Jewel), an AFC team has won. So The Post predicts that Beyonc will sing the AFC's New England Patriots to victory. Reid Gets Def Jam
By Tim Arango Universal Music and Antonio "LA" Reid have agreed in principle to a deal that will make Reid the head of Island Def Jam, The Post has learned. The deal is expected to be signed next week, sources say. The pact under negotiation is a three-year, multi-million dollar deal for Reid to become chairman and CEO of Island Def Jam, a unit of Universal and the music industry's largest hip-hop label. The job at the helm of IDJ became vacant last week when Lyor Cohen agreed to become chairman and CEO of Warner Music's recorded music unit. Warner Music was sold to a private equity group headed by Edgar Bronfman, Jr. for $2.6 billion and the sale is expected to close in the coming weeks. Reid had also been in negotiations with Bronfman, sources say. Reid was recently let go by Arista Records, a unit of BMG, which he ran for almost four years. Reid built his reputation as a prodigious producer of hit records from the likes of Pink and Avril Lavigne, but was ultimately terminated by BMG after Arista lost some $110 million last year. Under Reid, Arista racked up 31 Grammy nominations in 2003, the most of any label. The awards ceremony is Feb. 8 in Los Angeles. Island Def Jam boasts such hip-hop artists as Jay-Z, Ja Rule, DMX, Ashanti, and rock acts like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bon Jovi. The music industry, which has been in turmoil in recent years due to rampant piracy, is undergoing a restructuring that has resulted in several management and ownership changes. In addition to the sale of Warner Music by Time Warner to the Bronfman group, Sony Music and BMG have proposed to merge. That deal is currently pending in front of regulators both in the United States and Europe. Source: New York Post (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 31st. |
Follow that star Loads of luvvies: Guests at the Metropolitan in Bangkok could be forgiven for thinking they had wandered on to Hollywood Boulevard this week, when the entire cast of Alexander the Great checked in, along with Mariah Carey and Claudia Schiffer. Oliver Stone and Colin Farrell have been working on the film with Angelina Jolie in Udon Thani province in Thailand, where the vegetation has been sprayed to create a tropical effect. One of the extras said: “We left the hotel at 3.45am for the first day of filming, just as Colin Farrell arrived with a few buddies. One of them had a beer bottle in his hand, definitely coming in from the night before.” The filming, which features hundreds of Thai extras playing warriors on horses and elephants, is running smoothly, although the actors have complained that their thong sandals are very uncomfortable. 'Sexy but not skimpy'
Mariah Carey has ditched her skimpy look for a concert in Indonesia to respect Islamic traditions. The sultry singer is reported to have said she would not wear revealing outfits. Islamic tradition frowns upon women baring their legs and arms in public. The Valentine's Day concert takes place in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, next month. Carey's production manager Tom Hudak said: "It looks like in Indonesia Mariah will not appear as revealingly as she usually does. "I have consulted the promotors here on what Mariah should wear. "They have given their suggestions and I will put them forward for consideration." But Hudak said Carey, appearing as part of her "Charmbracelet" tour, would still look sexy. Mariah denies J-Lo duet plans
Mariah Carey says she has no plans to record a duet with Jennifer Lopez. It follows reports that the pair are hoping to release a song. A spokesperson for Carey said: "The rumours that Mariah and J-Lo will be collaborating for a duet are false." Earlier this month reports in America suggested Lopez's ex-manager Benny Medina, who currently advises Carey on her career, had been trying to persuade the pair to record a duet. The two divas reportedly have a dislike for each other dating back to when Carey was signed to Sony Music, which is home to Lopez. Carey is said to be furious that her ex-husband and ex Sony boss, Tommy Mottola, stole an idea from her for Lopez's hit single I'm Real. Carey also reportedly commented about Lopez's eight hour sleep habit: "If I had the luxury of not actually having to sing my own songs, I'd do that, too." She is currently working on songs for her follow-up album to last year's Charmbracelet album. Source: Ananova (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 29th. |
Mariah Carey drops sexy outfits for Jakarta
gig
A manager for American pop singer Mariah Carey has reportedly indicated that the singer will not wear revealing attire in her concert in Indonesia next month, but would look sexy nonetheless. Carey will respect Indonesia's customs and will do her best to appear decently in the concert scheduled for February 14 in Jakarta, Carey's production manager Tom Hudak told Detikcom news portal. "I have consulted the promoters here on what Mariah should wear. They have given their suggestions and I will put forward these suggestions to the management for consideration," said Mr Hudak. "It looks like in Indonesia, Mariah will not appear as revealing as she usually does," he said while inspecting the venue at the Jakarta Convention Centre. Mr Hudak however said Carey, appearing as part of her Charmbracelet tour, would still look sexy. Tattle Tales - Dippy duo
Did you know that Mariah Carey and J.Lo were on non-speaking terms? I didn’t, and sadly too, picturing the two singers slugging it out in a vat of slush would have made my insomnia seem like a blessing. But these days the two have decided to bury the hatchet, or as they say: “Kiss and make-up.” (now that’s a vision). In fact with BMG and Sony merging, the two rubbish singers are going to be seeing a lot of each other. J.Lo is keen to release a new album but a source says: “Jennifer wants to get back in the studio, but she’s not willing to do so until there’s a new deal in place. Given how the record business is now, her position isn’t being well-received.” Given the sheer crapaliciousness of Gigli, I’m surprised they’ll even let her near a studio. Maybe she and Ben should release a duet, they could call it: The way we were ... famous. Source: Gulf Weekly (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 28th. |

Team that is all business could have the edge
By Jim Wyatt Houston — There's no Bourbon Street and no South Beach. Such megafestive environments, overflowing with temptations for past Super Bowl participants, do not exist here. Houston is known more for humidity and the space program (remember ''Houston, we have a problem?''), but there are still plenty of extracurricular activities tugging at the Patriots and Panthers leading up to Sunday's Super Bowl XXXVIII. ''As soon as you land you can see all of the things that can be a distraction,'' Patriots cornerback Ty Law said. ''But we have preached all week, 'Don't get caught up in it. Just go out there and look at it as a business trip.' '' Yes, the Super Bowl is a business trip for the teams. But it's a party for the rest of the country, which is why there's so much more going on here this week. More people. More hype. More reasons for players to miss curfew. Tonight there's the Ultimate Pre-Bowl Kickoff Fiesta, where swimsuit models will mingle with players from around the league. The Coors Light Super Bash, a downtown music festival, kicks off tomorrow and continues through Sunday, but it conflicts with the Models & Bottles party at the Mercury Room. Magic Johnson, P. Diddy and LL Cool J are among the celebrities hosting parties. Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre and Mariah Carey are in town. ''It is almost like a circus atmosphere minus the tent, the bears and the juggling clowns,'' Patriots tight end Christian Fauria said. Players are also transformed into ticket brokers and travel agents during Super Bowl week — family and friends need tickets and hotel rooms, after all. The players also have meetings and practices, of course, but at night they are on their own. ''My first time, I wanted to go to all the parties. I wanted to meet people,'' said Panthers defensive tackle Brentson Buckner, who played for the Steelers in Super Bowl XXX. ''But you have to realize that you can't be a fan. You've got a game to play. You're the reason people are coming there. ... You're not there for the parties. You're there to win the game. When you win the game, you can go to all the parties you want after that.'' Some players — and teams — don't understand that until it's too late. When he returned to the Super Bowl with the Falcons in 1999, former Bills linebacker Cornelius Bennett said excessive partying was a key reason Buffalo went 0-4 in the big game. ''Let's just say we thought we were THE party team of the 1990s,'' Bennett said. ''What we did was cheat ourselves and get caught up with the Super Bowl hype. ... It's the biggest party in world, and we were world-class party people. Everyone tried to outdo everyone. I look back now and think of it as wasted opportunities.'' At Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami, Falcons safety Eugene Robinson was arrested the night before the game for allegedly soliciting a prostitute. Before last year's Super Bowl in San Diego, Raiders center Barret Robbins went on a drinking binge in Tijuana and missed curfew the night before the game. The Raiders sent him home. The Patriots and Panthers have been here for two nights without curfews, but that changes tomorrow for both teams. ''We're not going to be hangin' out at two and three in the morning,'' Patriots receiver Troy Brown said. The Patriots are in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years, so they are aware of the game-week minefield. Many of the Panthers, however, are wide-eyed, in uncharted territory. ''I don't know if you can ever guarantee nothing is going to happen, but we've taken precautions,'' Panthers Coach John Fox said. ''I've visited with our team about it. I think we have good team leadership, so I don't anticipate any problems.'' Source: Tennessean (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 27th. |

Jasmine's Juice
“Can you believe Damon Dash didn’t know what a tape measure was?” We were going to Rio or Puerto Rico after Aspen, but divas change their minds at the drop of a hat. So we flew to St Martin on Mariah’s private jet, then took a speedboat to neighbouring Anguilla. I went from tanning on the slopes to bronzing on the beaches. The first few days were spent relaxing by the pool, watching Jack the Dog pole vaulting into the water, playing cards and swimming with stingrays and dolphins. Readers may recall that two years ago I was attacked by dolphins in Mexico, but the trainers reassured me that dolphins don’t carry beef. I took my courage in both flippers and all was hunky dory. In the evenings we played a music knowledge game entitled For the Record, and one night Mariah pulled out a question about herself! Surreal. On New Year’s Eve she got a call from her mate Damon ‘entrepreneur-of-all things-fresh-to-def’ Dash. He invited us all to lunch so we swanned on down with our beachwear, only to find him surrounded by his tiny daughter Ava, Ava’s mum Rachel, BET head Bob Johnson, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Denzel and Mrs Washington, Giorgio Armani and family, and Robert De Niro. Someone pinch me! Damon was holding court among the glitterati. As soon as Giorgio’s son went to take a picture, I leapt up like Linford and got them to snap me a memory too – except at that moment Robert had gone over to the bar and I missed the photo opportunity! How gutted was I? On New Year’s Day we all went to Damon’s family house for dinner outside on a table beautifully set by the moonlit pool with thousands of flickering candles. Before dinner Damon dragged me and Mariah aside to listen to the album by his recent signing, UK rap group SAS. Dame kept yelling at me: “See, aren’t they the shit?!” They did sound hot. Damon assured me he was “the saviour of UK urban music”. He did say it while holding a blunt in each hand, so we can forgive the bragadociousness. Over dinner it was Jas versus Dame as we bantered to and fro, me cussing his often ludicrous statements like, “Even the Queen of England and Prince Charles know who Dame Dash is!” Ummm, no Dame. While I was laughing my socks off, he put me on blast by cussing my white-on-white Air Force Ones, which I admit I had mistreated on the beach. He told me if I couldn’t have a “fresh-to-def” pair on every outing, I should go barefoot! I said I would if I was on his fresh-to-def salary. After dinner we played the US version of charades. You act out a word which your team tries to guess. Can y’all believe the man running Roc-A-Wear didn’t know what a tape measure was? I told him I’d blast him in my column! Back in NYC I caught up with old friends like MTV’s Janet Shaw and went shopping with Di Joseph, formerly of Truce. Di was shocked when I tried on a pair of $30,000 Gucci shoes with a hole in my sock! I made up for it by taking her to my fave NYC eatery, Negrils. Then Kele Le Roc popped over, shortly followed by Masterstepz – a full-on Brit exodus. Finally, I bumped into Ja Rule at JFK airport and we chatted while waiting for our flights. He was incognito in his hoodie but finer than wine on a summer’s day. Me? I was just smiling at the perfect end to my perfect trip! Parker draws record numbers
Las Vegas — If you weren’t at the Parker Seminars Jan. 15-17, you missed record crowds, top speakers and headliner entertainers. Parker Seminars Las Vegas 2004 drew a number that at least equaled last year’s conference, said Bob Robuck, director of communications at Parker College of Chiropractic. The program attracted not only practicing chiropractors, but also their assistants, spouses and children. Something was offered for everyone. The multimedia, musical, and pyrotechnic extravaganza featured comedy routines from renowned performer Dana Carvey, a musical performance by Mariah Carey, a presentation from actress Marilu Henner of Taxi fame, and a special appearance by famous comedian Jerry Lewis. Elvis, Shania Twain and Diana Ross “wannabes” crooned and brought down the house to thunderous applause. But Parker Seminars Las Vegas wasn't all just fun and games. Serious learning also took place as volunteer trainers conducted more than 100 seminars in popular techniques, extra spinal techniques nutrition, basic and advanced practice management, personal and professional growth and science. Speakers included such notables as Mark Victor Hansen and Jack Canfield of the Chicken Soup® fame, John Gray, PhD and Paul Zane Pilzer. Parker Seminars, sponsored by Parker College of Chiropractic, were developed more than 50 years ago by Dr. James W. Parker as a way to help educate chiropractors on efficient and effective techniques for growing and nurturing their practices. Deadly Bird Flu Virus Spreads to more Asian
countries
Bangkok, Thailand - A 6-year-old Thai boy became Asia's seventh confirmed bird flu fatality and Pakistan on Monday joined the list of countries affected by the disease that has sparked mass chicken culls across the region. The World Health Organization pleaded Monday with the global scientific community to accelerate the search for a cure. Attempts to tackle the virus are being frustrated by its fast rate of mutation as well as its spread across at least eight countries. Other Asian governments frantically slaughtered chicken flocks in a desperate bid to contain the disease, as well as the growing political fallout from accusations that officials in two countries — Thailand and Indonesia — initially covered up outbreaks. Officials in Bangkok said they were investigating whether the virus might be being carried by migratory birds. The Thai boy became infected after he played with chickens in his village. He died Sunday night in a Bangkok hospital, Thailand's first confirmed death from the virus. Six people have died in neighboring Vietnam and Thai officials are trying to determine whether bird flu was also the cause of last week's death of a 56-year-old man who had bred fighting cocks. The WHO said a search for a cure had been set back because the virus had mutated. Scientists believe people get the disease through contact with sick birds. Although there has been no evidence yet of human-to-human transmission, health officials are concerned it might mutate further and link with regular influenza to create a form that could be transmitted from person to person, triggering the next human flu pandemic. "This is now spreading too quickly for anybody to ignore it," said WHO spokesman Peter Cordingley in Manila. So far eight countries have reported bird flu — Thailand, Cambodia, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan are also affected and Indonesia admitted it had a problem on Sunday. Indonesian officials had earlier denied the disease's presence, but the country's veterinarian association said independent investigations had revealed that bird flu had killed millions of chickens over recent months. The Jakarta Post reported Monday that Indonesian officials may have covered the outbreak there at the behest of politically connected businessmen who feared it would harm their interests. Indonesian officials denied the allegations. "It's not true. We have zero tolerance for pressure from businessmen. We are talking about the lives of people," Agriculture Department spokesman Hari Priyono said. The Thai prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, faced similar allegations that he covered up his country's outbreak. Thaksin has said that his government had suspected "a couple of weeks" ago that bird flu had struck his nation but that he didn't tell the public because he feared mass panic. Thailand has exterminated some 9 million chickens so far. Hundreds of soldiers and some prison inmates have been enlisted help with the cull after some poultry workers refused because of exposure fears. Source: Yahoo! Lyor Cohen to Head Warner Music Group
By Nekesa Mumbi Moody New York - Edgar Bronfman Jr. has lured Lyor Cohen away from Island Def Jam Music Group to head Bronfman's recently acquired Warner Music Group, it was announced Sunday. The move reunites Cohen with Bronfman, who led a group of investors that purchased Warner Music Group in November for $2.6 billion. The pair worked together when Bronfman was head of the Universal media conglomerate, until Bronfman sold all of those music, film, TV and theme-park assets to the French company Vivendi in 2000. "I've worked with Lyor since '98," Bronfman told The Associated Press in a conference call Sunday morning. "It's a fantastic opportunity to join forces." Cohen is a brash, legendary figure in the rap industry who started with the pioneering Def Jam Records 21 years ago. He will become one of the top music executives in the world at a time when the industry is facing significant restructuring and cost-cutting challenges in the face of declining sales and music downloading. He was able to avoid the fate of other prominent label heads who have fallen victim to the changing times, such as Tommy Mottola, ousted from atop Sony Music, and Antonio "L.A." Reid, who was let go by Arista. "Lyor Cohen runs things in a way the other guys can't," his longtime friend and business partner Russell Simmons said in a statement. "When most people throw money at things, Lyor throws creativity ... his vision is just different. You have to find new ways to do things. You have to be creative. The whole business needs to be revamped and Lyor knows how to do this and that's why this new job is perfect for him." Cohen's first job in entertainment was running a nightclub in Los Angeles. In the early 1980s he came to New York and wangled a job with Simmons' management company, starting as road manager for Run-DMC. Soon after, Simmons founded the pioneering Def Jam Records, which launched the careers of LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and many others. Cohen made himself so indispensable that Simmons gave him equity in the company — which they sold to Universal for $130 million in 1999. Universal then merged Def Jam with Island Records and put Cohen in charge, making him responsible for acts far beyond rap. Cohen said leaving Def Jam after 21 years was a rare chance that he couldn't pass up. "I was presented with an extraordinary opportunity to continue growing my career," he said. "I know everybody is encouraging me to take the next step in my career." Cohen said he would not be taking top Island Def Jam executives with him. "As far as I'm concerned, there's a bunch of breaking artists at the companies and the executives need to focus on that company and do a good job for them," he said. "I think this is a great opportunity for those left at the company to really get their shine and do a great job." In a statement, Universal Music Group said: "We thank Lyor for his many valuable contributions over the last several years and wish him only the very best in his new endeavor. We will be announcing plans for Island Def Jam shortly." A source familiar with Universal said the company was pursuing Reid to take Cohen's position. Although Arista reportedly lost more than $100 million under Reid, his track record of multiplatinum successes includes Pink, Avril Lavigne, Usher and the Grammy-nominated OutKast. Bronfman's purchase of Warner Music Group instantly created one of the world's largest music companies. Warner's share of the market is second only to Universal; as of last November, Warner had approximately 18 percent of overall market share, while Universal had about 28 percent, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Among the top artists on Warner's roster include Madonna, Missy Elliott, Faith Hill, matchbox twenty, Kid Rock, Staind and Metallica. Its recent success include crooner Josh Groban, who recently held the No. 1 position on the album charts. However, the company has had recent disappointments; Madonna's "American Life" last year sold poorly, and recent releases by Kid Rock and Elliott have not been top sellers. Still, Cohen said the company was "very very well right now," and said he looked forward to forging a close relationship with the stars at the label. Although Island Def Jam's roster ranges from the multiplatinum Nickelback to critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Ryan Adams, its greatest strength has been its rap and urban music divisions, which Cohen is credited with boosting. Cohen's 50-50 partnership with The Inc., then known as Murder Inc., gave the company hit acts Ja Rule and Ashanti. But the deal could eventually cost Island Def Jam millions; last year, independent label TVT records won a $132 million judgment, later reduced to $53 million, against the record company and Cohen in a dispute over previously recorded music by Ja Rule. The verdict has been appealed. Bronfman said he was not concerned about the case when he decided to pursue Cohen. Cohen has also seen disappointments of late at Island. He signed Mariah Carey after her disastrous union with Virgin Records, but her album with Cohen had only moderate success. Ja Rule's recent album was a flop. And Jay-Z, whose own sales have fallen off a bit, has declared his recently released "The Black Album" to be his last. Bronfman said Cohen's arrival does not hint at a greater shakeup at Warner. "Our fundamental focus is growing a competitive company," he said. Source: Yahoo! News (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 26th. |

Shows must go on, please, for Korn, Toto and
Carey
Hera Diani The last performer to hold a concert here needs no introduction. A songbird supreme and a pop diva in the truest sense, Mariah Carey's figure is getting more curvaceous and the beat of her music goes up through the years. She is no longer the skinny, black-clad, curly-haired soul sensation of 1990, but a seductive singing bombshell who has had her fair share of highly publicized meltdowns of late. However, that stunning seven-octave voice remains intact, and while rival Whitney Houston tries hard to get back on track again, Carey has continued to hold her own amid the rise of younger divas. Her albums have sold well, and she just released her latest album Charmbracelet, for which she kicked off the 2004 world tour. Warner Music Is Said to Pick Head of Unit
By Laura M. Holson Los Angeles - Lyor Cohen, the music impresario who has fostered the careers of artists like Public Enemy and Bon Jovi, is expected to join Warner Music as the head of its North American operations, two people apprised of the negotiations said on Friday. Executives are still working out the details of Mr. Cohen's contract, but an announcement could come as early as Sunday, these people said. Mr. Cohen was offered as much as $50 million for five years to stay at the Island Def Jam Music Group, a division of the Universal Music Group, where he is chief executive and has spent much of his career, according to one of these people. His deal at Warner is expected to be even richer, this person said, and could include a stake in Warner Music. Last November, Time Warner sold its music division for $2.6 billion to an investor group led by Edgar Bronfman Jr., the Seagram heir, and the investor Thomas H. Lee. Mr. Bronfman has known Mr. Cohen since he and his partners sold their stake in Def Jam Records for about $130 million to Seagram in 1999, which then owned Universal and was later acquired by Vivendi. But Mr. Cohen will be facing a task at Warner very different from the one he had at Island Def Jam. Doug Morris, chief executive of Universal Music Group, often protected his top lieutenants from the pressure - financial or otherwise - of corporate bosses, which at one point included Mr. Bronfman. Warner Music is now in the hands of private equity investors, including Bain Capital and Providence Equity Partners, which will be looking for steep returns and unlikely to tolerate any profligate spending. Mr. Cohen did not return a phone call seeking comment, but his departure has been rumored for weeks because his contract at Universal was up for renegotiation. Representatives for both Mr. Bronfman and Mr. Morris declined to comment. As with any negotiation, the deal could still fall apart if Universal comes in and offers Mr. Cohen a bigger incentive to stay. It is unclear, too, what will happen to Roger Ames, the chairman of Warner Music, who has overseen cuts at the company for several years. According to one of the people apprised of the deal, Mr. Cohen will report to Mr. Bronfman and, if Mr. Ames leaves, could be promoted. Mariah Carey’s tour shows growing faith in
Lebanon
Ramsay Short On Feb. 24, the biggest selling female performer of the 1990’s, Mariah Carey, will be performing in Beirut. It will be the singer’s first visit to an Arab country and comes as part of the Beiteddine Festival Committee’s attempt to change a growing perception amongst critics and its viewing public that it consistently fails to bring more popular musicians and entertainers to its annual summer festival. “We have been asked by our public why we don’t bring more popular singers to Beiteddine and so by bringing Mariah Carey to Beirut we are listening to them and responding to their legitimate demands,” Nora Jumblatt, head of the Beiteddine Festival Committee told The Daily Star Wednesday. Though many may have mixed feelings about Carey’s music, that she will be performing in Lebanon at the Beirut International Exhibition Center (BIEL) is a positive indicator of the country’s ability to attract top stars after the difficulties all the major festivals and promoters faced in 2003 due to the war on Iraq. Both the Baalbek International Festival and the Byblos International Festival cited the war last year as reasons why even some popular and in the case of the Byblos Festival, youth oriented bands like Placebo have canceled contracts to perform. Carey’s gig is also a major personal boost for Jumblatt and her colleague Hala Chahine after last year’s promised concert from Colombian-Lebanese singer Shakira was postponed due to the regional instabilites. Carey with her five-octave voice and numerous awards including two Grammys, is a star of international acclaim with a huge following around the globe. She has had 15 number one singles and broken the record held by The Beatles for most cumulative weeks spent atop the American Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. As a singer she is equally at home with sweeping ballads and pop and rarely for such a star she also composes all her own material. After numerous conversations with Lebanon’s festival promoters over the last few years, the consistent reason why they have failed to bring younger and more popular artists has been a question of money both in terms of artist’s fees and the potential to break even financially. Sources within the industry confirmed that today’s hit bands such as Coldplay and Jamiroquai perfect festival material can cost between $800,000 and $1 million. Very few of Lebanon’s famous music festivals actually turn a financial profit and as such require money from various donors, banks, and the Culture Ministry to survive, despite the cultural cache they give to the country. However, both Jumblatt and Chahine point out another reason why high caliber popular stars do not come. “Normally in the summer when we have the festivals, artists like Mariah Carey and others are not touring so it is much harder to bring them because they are either unavailable or cost much more,” says Chahine. “Most of them tour during winter and the spring. Mariah is coming now as part of her Charm Bracelet tour and will be continuing to Dubai on the Feb. 26. As she touring anyway we can bring her and her whole band and dancers at a more cost effective price.” Jumblatt adds that, “though it is outside of the traditional summer period we are expanding the scope of the Beiteddine Festival and continuing to evolve positively by staging Mariah at this time. “It is also the Beiteddine Festival’s contribution to the Beirut Shopping Festival which happens every February,” she says. Mariah Carey performs at BIEL on Feb. 24 as part of the Beiteddine Festival. Tickets available from Virgin and the Beiteddine offices. I’ll Carey on with Feb 22 concert, vows Mariah
By Renee Choong Petaling Jaya: American diva Mariah Carey will be here for her concert on Feb 22 – despite PAS' calls to ban her performance on claims that she is a provocative dresser and that she promotes moral degradation. “The concert date is confirmed. The only thing that will change is my costumes,” said Carey, whose remarks were relayed to The Star by concert organiser Galaxy Production spokesman Eric Chen. “Whatever they don’t like me to do, I won’t do it, but the date stays,” she said of her mega concert “An Intimate Evening with Mariah Carey,” which is part of her Charmbracelet World Tour that will also take her to Beirut and Dubai. Carey, however, has a long list of must-haves when she arrives here for the first time on Feb 22. She expects to have her privacy respected and security to be tight. Few things that are also high on her list are six cans of Diet Coke, ginger ale, ice-tea, uncut fresh fruits, a whole lemon, honey and unlimited supply of mineral water. It was said the former waitress who shot to fame in the 1990s has personally requested that these items be in her hotel room’s refrigerator at all times. According to Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur, which is hosting her stay at the presidential suite, the diva would get a personal butler. The hotel would ensure attentiveness to and security for Carey and the entourage throughout her stay. “She has personally chosen our hotel and we will make sure she gets what she wants,” it said in a statement. Jasmine's Juice
"Mariah went shopping in Christian Dior - it was like a Sex in the City episode!" So I told you in last week’s column about my magical, snowy Christmas adventure in festive Aspen. However, I also promised you more goss and detail – are you sitting comfortably? Here’s Part One with exclusive pics. Next week, catch my tropical week in Anguilla, which was too celeb-ridden for me to take in! During Christmas week I took Mariah’s dog Jack for daily walks up Smuggler’s Mountain (he likes water so much he sprinted into the hot tub every night to join us). We all went skiing and one-horse open sleighing, singing songs through the mountains (including Merry Christmas in Spanish, which sounded to me like we were saying ‘’very snobby dog’’). I insisted they sing a carol in an English accent to make me feel at home, a request that was greeted with much hilarity (ie p**s-taking). ‘Tubing’ was a shocking thrill. It’s like those huge inflatable doughnuts at water parks – but we did it on the icy mountain terrain! Whoo! On the slopes we bumped into Will Smith and wifey Jada Pinkett-Smith, who was moody ‘cos she’d taken a couple of spills. Will, Jada, their kids and extended family then joined Mariah’s family for hot toddies at the Buttermilk Mountain Café! Also on the slopes with us were Kevin Costner, Miami Vice’s Don Johnson and TV Superman himself, Dean Cain. Later, Mariah went shopping in Christian Dior – it was like an episode from Sex in the City! The most amazingly funny thing ever is on entry to every Aspen town store – from designer shops to the local post office – every customer is offered a glass of champagne. Can you imagine me and my girls shopping out there? We’d be in a coma within the first hour! You can be an alcoholic without spending a penny. A glass of water is on offer, too, but why bother with water when bubbly is there for the taking? Our Christmas tree was the biggest I’ve seen indoors. Ever. We covered it in butterflies, doves, angels and snowflakes while drinking eggnog. Christmas dinner was Yankee stylee – sweet potato, turkey and cranberry sauce, mash potato, stuffing , macaroni cheese and delicious biscuits. I reckon I put on a stone in weight. But it was much yummier than the English version. It was all so festive, snuggling up in front of a huge private cinema every night with MC’s clique and her three little nephews and nieces to watch cartoons. On Christmas Eve, instead of just attending Midnight Mass in the local church as usual, we decided to keep it at home and huddle around the cosy fireplace. We sat in a small group and read from the Bible to make it a really spiritual occasion. It was like a scene from The Waltons. Lovely. Then there were the prezzies. Mine included my first real diamond chain, a few Prada and Ralph Lauren goodies, two Fred Segal hangbags – which are very SATC – a scented candle, blinging earrings, a white wool coat, a DVD player, tacky knickers and lots of bathroom smellies. One of MC’s best friends and backing singers Mary-Anne brought her dog Tiffany along – sporting designer wear and other clothes “for when she goes to church’’. As you can see, I had a real diva-eye opener of a Christmas before packing my bikinis and flying off in MC’s private jet to Anguilla. Someone slap me – I need a reality check! Carey gives concert for chiropractors
By Jeannette Walls with Ashley Pearson Mariah Carey — who recently announced that she would be playing more “intimate” concerts — surprised some in the music industry by singing for 10,000 chiropractors last weekend. The diva, who not too long ago was the hottest-selling singer in the country, was the headliner at a convention for the back specialists at the Las Vegas Hilton, where the other celeb attractions included such stars as Marilu Henner of “Taxi” fame and Jerry Lewis. “She’s had some rough spots in her career lately,” says one industry expert. “But those trade conventions pay pretty well.” Source: MSNBC (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 20th. |

PAS criticised for wanting concert banned
By Renee Choong and Catherine Chong Kuala Lumpur: Barisan Nasional and DAP leaders have criticised PAS for its call to ban American pop star Mariah Carey’s concert at the Stadium Merdeka here on Feb 22 on grounds that she is provocative in her dressing. MCA Youth secretary-general Liow Tiong Lai urged PAS leaders to adopt a more liberal attitude as Malaysia was a progressive and plural society. “Malaysians are generally tired of calls by PAS to ban concerts, the imposition of a dress code and its gender segregation policies,” he said. Liow said the MCA had received many complaints from youngsters following the protest by PAS against Carey’s concert as they felt PAS leaders were “living in the dark ages.” Penang DAP legal bureau chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said it was another extension of PAS’ discrimination against women. “How can PAS ask for the cancellation of concerts of such nature in a progressive country like Malaysia, which is trying to be at par with other developing and developed countries. “This further reinforced the narrow-mindedness of the party’s leadership,” he said. DAP Wanita chief Chong Eng said PAS should channel its energy towards helping to solve more serious issues like pornography instead of harping on inconsequential matters. She said that if the public could not watch the concert, they could easily watch it on television or music videos. MCA Wanita central committee member Tan Cheng Liang said PAS was basically against any form of entertainment including wholesome cultural dances. “PAS should discard its Stone Age thinking and move forward with the times,” she said. On Thursday, Federal Territory PAS deputy youth chief Ahmad Sabki Yusof sent a protest memorandum to the Culture, Arts and Tourism Ministry, saying that the party could not accept Carey’s “immoral performance.” Concert organiser Galaxy Productions spokesman Eric Chen said Carey had personally picked Malaysia to be one of her world tour destinations in line with her objective to cover new territories as an international artiste. He said she was set to tour other predominantly Muslim nations such as Lebanon, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. Chen revealed that they had been in talks with Carey for the last two years and she had agreed to perform here, as Malaysia was one of her strongest fan bases in Asia. “Carey has already been briefed about the culture and sensitivities of this country before she accepted the invitation to perform here and she knows her limits. “We already said there will be no bikini costumes, and that she will don attire that complies with the dress regulations approved by the Culture, Arts and Tourism Ministry,” he said. Having sold 150 million copies of her albums, Carey has had more No. 1 songs than any other artistes, with the exception of Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Mariah's No Malay-dy
Mariah Carey's unlucky streak continues as we hear that the squeaky songbird has managed to offend Maylasian Muslims...and without singing a single note! Leader of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party's youth wing, Ahmad Sabki Yusof, wrote a letter to the government saying that Mariah promoted un-Islamic principles and should be banned from performing in the country. The concerned fella said: "Everyone knows Mariah presents herself in a sexy, unacceptable and almost vulgar manner. Allowing such concerts promotes and condones values that are totally contrary to our way of life and our culture." Mazza has reportedly already assured the government she would comply with dress regulations. Now, if we can just convice her that that singing is an affront to decency too... Source: BBC - TOTP News (All rights reserved) Heroes comment: This news has been reported worldwide in all languages, but the Trash Award goes to... BBC - TOTP News. Is this their way to thank Mariah to go sing for their show almost everytime she's in the UK? Posted on January the 17th. |

Investigation
Kinou and I worked a part of the night to search, translate and summarize infos of what you can find on non-English language sites from the PAS and associated sites. The article about the PAS memorandum, asking for the cancelation of Mariah's concert in Malaysia, appears on a lot of extremists sites. The result is that this is not only an outfit issue, it's also an opposition to a culture. The outfit issue is only a secondary fact. Even if we found a lot more infos about this, we will not post more. Posted on January the 16th. |

Malaysia's Islamic opposition protests Mariah Carey's 'immoral' concert Kuala Lumpur : Malaysia's opposition Islamic Party (PAS) on Thursday protested the government's move to allow sexy American pop diva Mariah Carey to hold a concert next month, saying it would encourage moral degradation. In a letter to Tourism Minister Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir, PAS youth wing said Carey's planned concert at a stadium in Kuala Lumpur on February 22 was also disrespectful to Muslims because it coincided with an Islamic religious holiday. "To allow a western artist, especially Mariah Carey who is well-known for her sexy clothing, to perform on Awal Muharram is disrespecting the sensitivities of Muslims and can be seen as challenging the status of Islam as Malaysia's official religion," it said. "We cannot accept such an immoral concert to be held on Awam Muharram or on any other days... it is not only an insult to Muslims but will encourage moral degradation especially among youths." PAS youth wing noted that this was not the first time the tourism ministry had approved such concerts, noting that it also allowed major US rock group Linkin Park to perform here in October. It called for Carey's concert, which is part of her "Charmbracelet" world tour, to be cancelled immediately and urged the government to apologise to Muslims, who make-up some 60 percent of Malaysia's 25 million population. The government should organise more programmes to benefit the Muslim community, rather than tarnish good eastern values by bringing in such "obscene and immoral culture," it added. - AFP Source: Channelnewsasia.com (All rights reserved) Heroes comment: So sad, for the Malaysian fans, even if the concert still goes on, the joy and fun is spoiled for them. Malaysian party backtracks on ban on 'sexy' clothes Kuala Lumpur : Malaysia 's opposition Islamic Party (PAS) has backtracked on a controversial ruling banning non-Muslim women from wearing 'sexy' clothes to work in a state it rules, a report said on Thursday. PAS official Sulaiman Abdullah drew flak from many quarters when he announced about two weeks ago that employers in northeast Terengganu state whose workers were found to be wearing improper attire could be fined up to 250 ringgit ($66) or lose their licences. Non-Muslim women cannot wear short-sleeved blouses, tight-fitting jeans, long skirts with slits, mini-skirts and figure-hugging or revealing dresses while Muslim women working in the private sector must adhere to the Islamic dress code by wearing headscarves and loose clothes, he said. But PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang, who is also Terengganu chief minister, was quoted by The Star as saying that local authorities did not pass such a ruling and that Sulaiman's statement was his "personal view." "Non-Muslims are free to dress according to their religion but they must respect the attire of Muslims. We will motivate and educate Muslim women to wear the headscarf as it is compulsory under Islam," he said. However, Abdul Hadi warned that the state government may take action against non-Muslims if they were found "dressed indecently to the extent of moral degradation." The hardline Islamic Party controls Terengganu and neighbouring Kelantan state, or two of the 13 states in multicultural Malaysia , which has large non-Muslim minorities of ethnic Chinese and Indians. Arista Records Chief Gets the (Gucci) Boot By Roger Friedman Click here. Posted on January the 14th. |
Arista boots Reid
By Phyllis Furman Music honcho Antonio (L.A.) Reid, who catapulted chart-topping acts like OutKast, Pink, Avril Lavigne, Toni Braxton and TLC, has been forced out of money-losing Arista Records. Reid got the word of the big shake-up yesterday morning from his boss, BMG chairman Rolf Schmidt-Holtz. In the afternoon, the flamboyant music producer was seen packing boxes in his office. He is said to have had a year-and- half left on his multimillion dollar contract. The move comes as BMG gets ready to merge with rival Sony Music. It is looking to cut costs and consolidate its labels. But BMG sources said Reid's ouster would have come even if there were no Sony union on the horizon because Arista had been losing big wads of cash. Losses reached an estimated $100 million last year as Reid spent lavishly to put CDs on the charts. He took the fall after a number of releases from highly-paid artists, including Pink's latest album, "Try This," bombed. A big spender from the start, Reid took hundreds of employees on a retreat in Puerto Rico when he first took over Arista three years ago. "Operating losses were significant and it couldn't go on," an insider said. Reid's exit will be the first of many in the coming weeks as a series of music deals leads to a high-powered game of musical chairs. Music honcho, Lyor Cohen who heads Universal Music label Island Def Jam, is being courted by Seagram scion Edgar Bronfman Jr., for a "serious position" at Warner Music. A Bronfman spokeswoman said he does not comment on speculation. A decision on whether Cohen goes to Warner Music or remains at Universal is expected imminently. And word floated yesterday that some Warner label chiefs, including Elektra boss Sylvia Rhone, might soon be exiting the music giant. Reid, in turn, might be heading to Universal Music Group, possibly to start a new label. Ironically, the Arista honcho is leaving just as one his biggest acts, OutKast, is No. 1 on the pop charts. OutKast is expected to shine at the upcoming Grammy Awards. "We'll be getting a lot of thank-yous at the Grammys. OutKast will take Best Album," a source close to Reid predicted. "L.A. will be there," the source added. In a statement, Schmidt-Holtz called Reid "one of the music industry's top record men. His passion for working with and developing some of the world's best artists is unparalleled." Reid declined to comment. Reid was hired to replace legendary music man Clive Davis at Arista. BMG paid $100 million to acquire La Face Records, the label co-founded by Reid and his partner, songwriter Babyface. The move, orchestrated by Schmidt-Holtz's predecessor Strauss Zelnick, set off a firestorm of protest from music execs and superstars, who believed Davis should have remained at the helm of Arista. Mariah to duet with arch rival J.Lo?
Singing sensation Mariah Carey is planning a duet with arch rival Jennifer Lopez. Friends of the Dreamlover singer had accused J.Lo's hit single I'm Real of ruining Mariah's 2002 Glitter album, after Jennifer used samples of Yellow Magic Orchestra in the track, after Mariah had already used them previously in a song she hoped to release. And after hearing J.Lo gets eight hours sleep a night, Mariah scathed, "If I had the luxury of not actually having to sing my own songs, I'd do that, too." But record industry sources are saying Mariah is now ready to "bury the hatchet" with her fellow New Yorker. However, Mariah's spokesperson says, "It sounds like a nice idea. But there's no trust to it." Another insider tells the New York Daily News, "They've reserved studio time. They'd like her to have a single out by the spring and an album out in the summer. Now that BMG and Sony are merging, every exec is hustling for a big hit so he can keep his job." Despite their rivalry, the two singers have a lot in common. J.Lo's Sony label boss Tommy Mottola is Mariah's ex-husband, while Mariah is receiving career advice from Lopez's former manager Benny Medina. A source adds, "Jennifer wants to get back in the studio, but she's not willing to do so until there's a new deal in place. Given how the record business is now, her position isn't being well-received." Source: Contactmusic (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 13th. |
Mariah Carey to stage first concert in Arab
world
American pop diva, biggest-selling female artist in history, will be performing in Beirut on February 24. Beirut - American pop diva Mariah Carey is to perform in Beirut on February 24, in her first appearance in the Arab world, organisers said. The biggest-selling female artist in history with 90 million records sold worldwide, will be performing at BIEL, an sea-front exhibition and leisure centre, said Beiteddine Festivals. The concert is part of Carey's "Charmbracelet" world tour and will be followed by a performance in Dubai on February 26. Carey, 33, first shot to stardom in the 1990s and has had more number-one songs than any other artist, with the exception of Elvis Presley and The Beatles, according to her label Columbia Records. The singer, songwriter and sometime actress is attempting to relaunch her career after going through a very public nervous breakdown in 2002. Carey, who has earned two Grammy Awards and eight American Music Awards, has topped charts with hits such as "Hero," "Dreamlover," "All I want for Christmas is you" and "When you believe" from the film The Prince of Egypt. Rock it baby!
It’s showtime once again folks! The Heartbreaker is coming to town. Following soldout concerts by Craig David and the upcoming Bryan Adams show, it’s time for Mariah Carey to rock the Gulf. The “World’s Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium” is set to perform in Dubai on February 26. “Mariah Carey is one of the most talented, successful and best loved artistes around the world. She is a true diva who can move from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop hits with great ease and so appeals to audiences of all ages and nationalities,” says Thomas Ovesen, general manager of organisers, Mirage Promotions Dubai. “Mariah Carey’s live concert in Dubai is set to be the season’s biggest and most highly anticipated live entertainment event” he adds. Further concert details including venue and ticket prices will be announced shortly. Since she began her career, Mariah Carey has become the best-selling female performer of all time, with an incredible 15 No 1 singles and two Grammy Awards. Along the way she became the only artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s, and, with Heartbreaker, she pushed ahead of the Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart. Possessing a spectacular seven-octave range, Mariah has proven that she is equally at home with sweeping ballads and pop, often incorporating elements of dance and hip-hop into the mix. Perhaps even more impressive, she composes all of her own material. Born in Long Island, New York, as the daughter of a former opera singer and vocal coach — Mariah began singing at the age of four, and was writing her own songs by the time she was attending Oldfield Middle School. She moved to New York City, the day after graduating from high school. Honing her songwriting skills and lending her vocals to several local acts, she first garnered industry attention when singing back up for Brenda K. Starr, who gave Mariah’s demo tape to Sony Music Entertainment chief Tommy Mottola at a party. The rest, as they say, is history. Diva duet?
Mariah wants 'Carey vs. Lopez' to become 'M.C. + J.Lo' Have longtime rivals Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez found a studio big enough for the two of them? New York's two favorite divas have been hissing at each other for years. Back in 2001, Lopez, who was signed to Sony Music by Carey's ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, was said to have angered Carey by slapping a sample by Japan's Yellow Magic Orchestra on her song "Be Real," when she heard Carey wanted to use it. When an interviewer mentioned to Carey that she'd met Lopez, Carey sniped, "I bet that was really intellectually stimulating." Asked about Lopez's claim that she gets eight hours of sleep a night, Carey remarked, "If I had the luxury of not actually having to sing my own songs, I'd do that, too." Now, a well-placed source tells us, "Mariah wants to bury the hatchet. She wants Jennifer to do a duet." Officially, reps for both deny a recording rapprochement is in the works. "It sounds like a nice idea," says a spokeswoman for Carey, whose career is now being guided by Lopez's former manager, Benny Medina. "But there's no truth to it." A source close to Lopez says, "I don't know how Jennifer would benefit from working with Mariah." Whether or not Lopez is ready to make music with Carey, execs are said to be trying to light a fire under her beautiful booty. "They've reserved studio time," an insider tells us. "They'd like her to have a single out by the spring and an album out in the summer. Now that BMG and Sony are merging, every exec is hustling for a big hit so he can keep his job." Lopez, who records for Sony's Epic label, sold a respectable 2.5 million copies of her last CD, "This Is Me ... Then." But sources say she's in no mood to be rushed. "She's been talking about renegotiating her contract," says another source. "When you're a star as big as she is, you set your own pace." Still another source said, "Jennifer wants to wants to get back in the studio, but she's not willing to do so until there's a new deal in place. Given how the record business is now, her position isn't being well-received." A Lopez rep was unavailable for comment and an Epic spokeswoman didn't return a call. Nikki Beach in St. Bart
Current jetset etiquette dictates that on arriving on the island, the Nikki Beach crowd retire to one of three hotels: Carl Gustaf, Eden Rock or the divine oasis of chic, Isle De France. Unless of course, like Mariah Carey, you're staying in a super-luxe villa hired through Sibarth, the It estate agent in St Barts' biggest town, Gustavia. Or on a yacht. Or at actress/professional tantrum-thrower Shannen Doherty's private holiday residence. 'And Puff Daddy,' adds Alex. 'He loves to mix, so he comes up, pushes the DJ out and starts to play. And Mariah Carey, she requests songs from the DJ just like anyone. Buys champagne for everyone.' Source: The Observer (All rights reserved) (extract) Posted on January the 11th. |

Adrie stays grounded dealing with the stars
Hera Diani Music promoter Adrie Subono scratched his balding pate while browsing the list of riders -- or requests -- sent by Mariah Carey for her Feb. 15 concert here. So what becomes a diva most? The long list ranged from detailed requests on specific nibbles, beverages -- Diet Sprite, Diet Snapple and gallons of spring water -- to the types of sofa and pillows that must be provided. "I've been doing this stuff for 10 years ... but, still, I feel like crying when I see the riders on the contract," sighed Adrie, who turns 50 on Sunday. With dense tufts of shoulder-length hair on his otherwise bald head, craggy features, the muscled body of the fighter he says he is and an earring in his left ear, tears would not make for a pretty picture. Thankfully, he was speaking rhetorically: Adrie, firmly established as a leading entertainment promoter, has learned to take the idiosyncrasies of the stars in his stride. Since establishing Java Musikindo in 1994, he has staged a number of concerts for artists such as Mr. Big, Alanis Morissette, The Corrs, Boyzone, the Cranberries and Suede, usually to sold-out crowds. The company impresses with its professional handling of security, the audience and the media in a field often populated by those who are learning on the job. "Many wonder why I'm willing to waste money and invite around 300 reporters to cover my event. But we can't just think of money, we have to consider the marketing value when the media writes about us," said the genial, outgoing man. He might not get off on feeding his ego with awards, but his professional attitude has paid off. On Thursday, he was ranked 13th among the top 50 local entrepreneurs of the year, given by the Jakarta office of Bermuda-based giant consulting firm Accenture, which cooperated with Swa business magazine and the Association of Young Indonesian Entrepreneurs (HIPMI). "That means people have started to appreciate the profession of promoter, which is good. I'm really glad," he said. Things were very different when he started out 10 years ago by organizing a concert for American rock group Saigon Kick. "Hardly anyone wanted to do the job. People thought that being a promoter was as simple as hiring an artist and renting a venue. It's not. It's really complicated and needs extra effort. You can see it yourself in this," he said, pointing to the copious Carey demand list. "But we manage to do it, because we have a system. Java has only nine staff, young people, mostly women. But they know their job well. After Mariah, there will be (rock group) Korn on Feb. 25. No problem. Why? Because we have the system and we're professional." The system was fine tuned from his more than 20 years experience in a wide range of business fields before he made the switch to showbiz. A high school dropout ("I was such a rebel"), he started out as a paper supplier, later branching out into shipping, forwarding, oil and telecommunications. "Back in 1978, the economy was thriving. Development was everywhere and this country was rich because of the oil boom. Employment was abundant and whatever you did, you could earn a profit from it. So, even though I dropped out of school, I could manage to do something." He also does not deny that it helped that former president B.J. Habibie is his mother's younger brother. "Of course I got privileges, I'm not a hypocrite. I couldn't say no, either, because I had to survive. But I don't think I crossed the line, because otherwise people would talk, but they don't. Because I'm not greedy, and I know when to stop." Adrie described himself as a fighter, not willing to stop until he comes up against a brick wall. He considers this unrelenting drive the key to his success. He went into music because he wanted to do what he liked ("I love blues and I'm crazy about Eric Clapton"). His philosophy is to work hard and earn money for 20 years, and then enjoy life, right about the point where he is now. "Even so, I never work all day and all night. Family is my first priority, I always have dinner at home," said Adrie, who plays guitar and has a collection of 35 of the instruments. The family man image is not an idle claim: Adrie is always seen about town with his wife, former model Chrisye Subono, 50, and his three children -- Melanie, Christy and Adrian -- also work with him. "What is life if not for family? I love my children so much that I become overprotective. My son in law was shocked when I challenged him to a fight before marrying Melanie. It's not about winning or losing, but I must be satisfied that my children will be protected and in good hands," he said, saying Chrisye's patience helped defuse his temper. He credits his uncle Habibie for teaching him the importance of family. Rebellious Adrie was sent by his father, a military officer, to Germany at the age of 16, where he stayed for eight years. When his father died four years later, Habibie became a father figure to him. The core strength of Adrie's marriage comes through in the mixed faiths of his family: He and his son are Muslim, while his wife and daughters are Christians. "There has never been any problem because of that, as far as I remember. We respect each other's beliefs very much. It's a personal thing, why we should make a problem out of it?" Adrie discovered a greater appreciation of life when he narrowly escaped injury during the JW Marriott bombing last August. His office is in Plaza Mutiara, adjacent to the hotel, and it also suffered damage in the blast. "I was in the toilet at the time when the bomb hit the window where my desk was," he said, pointing to a slightly shredded curtain. He was traumatized, unable to leave his home or even consider traveling by plane. He now takes the incident as a sign that he needs to be more patient and submit to God. For now, he said, he will let go and enjoy life. "I can work all night, but for what? If I can enjoy it, then what more can I enjoy? I don't have anything, I don't have hair -- I'm ugly," he laughed. And when I quoted a fellow reporter who considers him as falling into the category of "sexy ugly," defined in the sleeper hit Kissing Jessica Stein, Adrie only laughed harder. Night Beat: Carey, Twain fans have plenty
to say about concerts
Doug Elfman Just checking the feedback on my concert reviews again. Let's see ... hmm, it's all about Mariah Carey and Shania Twain. They both sang Dec. 20 -- Carey at the Aladdin Theatre, Twain at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. I wrote in a Dec. 22 review that Carey put on a "B" show, but I didn't get to hear much of it, because two fans screeched constantly, right next to me, and in high pitches that were way more frequent than I hear at other concerts. Scores of Carey fans were loud like this. I just happened to be behind two of them. Among the voice mail I got was a message from a gentleman who was too familiar with my complaint: "Those two women were down at a Primm concert that I went to with my wife. We don't go to concerts anymore because of these two. ... They sat behind us three rows back. We almost died. ... Why doesn't the management throw them the hell out? Give them their money back, and get them out of there. ... How do their vocal chords stand what they do for the entire show without let-up?" My favorite e-mail complaint was from "Pete," who writes that I may quote his email, as long as I don't "misuse" his comments or take them out of context, so I have edited them just to fit the Review-Journal's grammar styles. He lives in the United Kingdom, he writes, and has been a Carey fan-club member for 13 years: " ... and was disgusted to read your piece on my way home from Las Vegas. Firstly, you were surely at the concert, sent by your paper to review and report on the Mariah Carey concert, not on the audience. Hardly a mention of the actual concert, you continually refer to two fans in the fourth row who were `Two of Carey's `lambs' ruin concert experience,' with their incessant shrieking. I was not fortunate enough to be that close to the stage, being in row J 106, approximately a dozen rows back. Maybe the fault lies with whoever gave you seats in the fourth row. Surely trying to be fair to everybody, you should have been somewhere near myself, a lot further back than the fourth row. I was the `flashing Santa Hat' if you were very observant, but thought the show was very good. What did you really expect, sitting so close to the stage, and among Mariah's fan club? To the very close Mariah fans, when the concert starts, and Mariah appears, this is liking to an `emotional explosion' which will show in the so-called `shrieking,' etc., that comes with different people showing their emotions in different ways. May I suggest that firstly before you go to another concert, you should go to someone who can tell you about such emotional experiences, and then you will understand what you are walking into. Regards, Pete." As for Twain, two e-mailers, Leigh-Ann Gerow and Nancy Ross, saw the country star, whom I missed because she sang the same night as Carey. Before the Twain show, I had quoted a Texas concert reviewer who complained that Twain put on a Vegas-y show. But Gerow and Ross said the concert didn't end up all that glitzy, further proving that you can't really always go by the subjectivity of critics, such as myself. Gerow wrote on their behalf: "I honestly have to say that because of the little `pre-review' from Houston promising `Vegas glitz,' I initially found the concert a bit disappointing. There was no glitz. There wasn't really any glam. It was one of the most sparse large concerts I've ever seen -- nothing like the recent concert by the Dixie Chicks at the MGM Grand, for example. It didn't even have the production values of a Gloria Estefan concert, circa 1996. "For the first half of the show, she wore a UNLV football jersey, just to give you an idea of the tone. I was close enough to the stage to notice she really was in need of a haircut. It was all so informal -- it was like you just dropped in at Shania's house on a Sunday afternoon and she decided to give an impromptu two-hour concert. The only `glitz' was in the form of fireworks, which blasted upwards from the corners of the stage at the end of most songs, and they were mostly unnecessary and seemed out of place ... "That being said, once I got over the missing glitz, I thought the concert was one of the most fascinating things I'd ever seen... Shania was extremely interactive with the crowd, acknowledging almost every individual sign held up by fans, and inviting many of the sign-bearers up onstage. She signed autographs at the edge of the stage during practically every song ... I've never seen a performer do that. She seemed very comfortable interacting with people, and very approachable, which I'm sure is both a blessing and a curse. "Most importantly, she sounded great, although her voice was a bit weak for the last two or three songs, and she did sing for more than two hours. I don't think she missed a single album track. For $85 bucks, it was a great bargain." Source: Review-Journal (All rights reserved) Posted on January the 10th. |

Randall tops field at national meet
U.S. Championship: Olympic skier wins sprint race on cold day in Maine. By Beth Bragg What a day for Kikkan Randall. She gets Alaska-like weather in Maine, she makes a cosmic-like connection with her mother and the ski gods and she exchanges bad news for good news. Oh, and she wins a national championship too. Randall, the 21-year-old Olympic skier from Anchorage, captured the U.S. title in the women's sprint race Thursday at the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships in Rumford, Maine. Because the ski trails are 35 minutes away from APU's team hotel, skiers waited in the team van. Randall and four other APU women stayed inside the toasty vehicle -- "We kept the van running the whole day,'' Randall said -- and listened to music. "We had the iPod running and we were having a good time,'' she said. The iPod played songs at random, and one of its selections was truly cosmic. Shortly before Randall had to race she heard Mariah Carey's "Make It Happen.'' Four time zones away in Anchorage, her mom, Debbie Randall, heard the same song at 9:30 a.m., the scheduled start time for Randall's qualifying race. "Mom called and said, "I knew it was gonna be a good day for you because at 9:30 this song came on about miracles and believing.' I said no way. That same song came randomly onto our iPod at 9:30.'' Singer Mariah Carey mermaid our day when she popped out for a beach stroll sporting a beaming smile... and little else. Carey's saucy beach strip
Wacky pop star Mariah Carey shocked onlookers when she took a walk down a Caribbean beach yesterday (07Jan04) dressed only in a skimpy sarong. The Glitter beauty - who has reportedly suffered mental health problems in the past - strutted down the sand looking like a mermaid as her curly blonde hair cascaded down over her naked breasts, with only a small blue wrap around her hips. One fellow sunbather commented, "She was the centre of attention wherever she went." Here's the result of our investigation.
For all the countries where Mariah didn't gave a concert (including Belgium),
don't blame Mariah, her staff, MonarC, Island/Def Jam, Universal.
The only reason why she didn't came is that the concert promoter of your
country (including Belgium) didn't asked her to come. And remember,
a singer or band never choose the countries they will go to, their staff
will choose among the requests received.

Mariah Carey to perform here
Kuala Lumpur: It is confirmed that American pop diva, Mariah Carey, has marked Kuala Lumpur as part of her Charmbracelet World Tour 2004. The 33-year-old singer who conquered the pop world with her stunning five-octave vocals is scheduled to perform at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, on Feb 22. Deputy Culture, Arts and Tourism Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow said Carey’s concert in Malaysia would attract her foreign fans from neighbouring countries such as Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia. Pledging the ministry’s full support for the concert, Fu said the presence of international artistes like Linkin Park and Carey in Malaysia had brought both business opportunities and challenges to the local music industry. When asked whether the sexy Carey will be allowed to dress sexily for her concert in Kuala Lumpur, Fu said: “All foreign artistes – men and women, are expected to dress up accordingly for their performance in this country. “Once a concert organiser obtains the permit to organise a show here, the government will advise the company on the ‘dos and don’ts’. “Basically, the Malaysian government expects the international stars who wish to perform in this country to comply with the laws of Malaysia.” Eric Chan, the personal assistant to the managing director of Galaxy Production, the party who is responsible in bringing Carey to this country, assures Carey’s fans that the American singer will not be cancelling her tour here. “I know some people are worried that Mariah will call off her show in Kuala Lumpur in view of the recent reported SARS cases in the Asian region.” Mariah Carey – Charmbracelet World Tour 2004 Live In Malaysia is organised by Galaxy Production and presented by TMNet. Tickets are priced at RM68, RM138, RM178, RM228, RM268 and RM338, excluding RM1 processing fee per ticket. Showtime begins at 8pm. MasterCard and Metrojaya card members who purchase their tickets from Metrojaya outlets in Bukit Bintang, Mid Valley, Section 14 in Petaling Jaya in the Klang Valley and Johor Baru during the priority booking period will enjoy a 5% discount on all ticket prices. It is for a limited time only. For details, call the ticketing hotline at 03-22822020 or e-mail info@galaxy.com.my Source: The Star (All rights reserved) Heroes comment: If you want to know more about the local laws, click here. Mariah's Marilyn Role Postponed
Mariah Carey's latest attempt to emulate her heroine Marilyn Monroe has stalled - her stage debut in a role made famous by the screen goddess has been postponed. Mariah, whose acting debut in flop film "Glitter" earned her critical ridicule, is a huge fan of tragic Marilyn, and even owns the late star's white baby grand piano. She'd been planning to make her live acting debut in a stage production of "The Sleeping Prince" - in the role Marilyn played in the film version "The Prince and the Showgirl" - but the production has now been delayed until further notice. Aspen update
Bold names behaved themselves in the hills for the holidays - for the most part. Tabloid stories this year have people drinking Veuve Clicquot up there, at the Prada party and at Denise Rich's NY Eve bash. The champagne's publicist was in town, stirring the pot and reporting back on it. The NY Post reports that one partygoer at Rich's party had too much of the French bubbly, took off her clothes and dived into the heated pool, where she did water aerobics. A male crowd gathered, of course, until Rich had a servant put a stop to it, politely telling the woman, "You are fabulous. You are divine. But you must get out of the pool - right now!" How many times have I heard that? I once had Lee Marvin skiing in Aspen when he was, er, how should I put it? Dead. But to take the word of spies, Diana Ross was at the Caribou Club, and she's always there. Mariah Carey waited until the last run at Buttermilk so no one could see her falling. And David Spade caught Kevin Nealon's comedy act in Snowmass (the SNL star also played Keystone over the holidays.) Sightings included Dean Cain, Barry Bonds, Mike Piazza, Eminem. Joan Collins reportedly missed all NY Eve celebrations in Aspen citing altitude sickness. She fled to Los Angeles after two nights in town. Carey OK!
By Aquin George Mariah Carey fans were left disappointed in May last year as talks of her performing in Dubai turned out to be a rumour. Fortunately on February 26, 2004, the lady with an astounding voice and the distinction of being the 'world's best selling female artist of the millennium', ... will be singing live in concert here. Says Thomas Ovesen, General Manager, Mirage Promotions Dubai, 'Mariah is a true Diva who can move from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop hits with great ease and so appeals to audiences of all ages and nationalities. Her concert here is set to be the season's biggest and most highly anticipated live entertainment event.' When asked whether Mariah would cancel her Dubai plans like in 2003, an official at Mirage Promotions informed that the last time around the promoter who tried getting her down had not even signed a contract. This time though the contract is signed and the deposit has been paid. The Dubai leg of Mariah Carey's 'Charmbracelet' world tour comes closely on the heels of the unprecedented success of two sold out Craig David Concerts organised by Mirage Promotions. While neither the venue nor the ticket prices have been confirmed, the singer who possesses a spectacular seven-octave range, will surely perform some of her very memorable songs in addition to the popular tracks on the Charmbracelet album. For the uninitiated, since she began her career, Mariah Carey has since become the best-selling female performer of all time, with an incredible 15 #1 singles and two Grammy Awards. Along the way she became the only artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s, and, with 'Heartbreaker,' she pushed ahead of the Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. Mariah Carey - Live in Dubai as part of her
'Charmbracelet' World Tour
Following the unprecedented success of two sold out Craig David Concerts, Mirage Promotions is pleased to announce a sensational live concert in Dubai with the "World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium" Mariah Carey on 26th February 2004. "Mariah Carey is one of the most talented, successful and best loved artistes around the world. She is a true Diva who can move from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop hits with great ease and so appeals to audiences of all ages and nationalities" commented Thomas Ovesen, Mirage Promotions Dubai General Manager. "Mariah Carey's live concert in Dubai is set to be the season's biggest and most highly anticipated live entertainment event" he added. Further concert details including venue and ticket prices will be announced shortly. Since she began her career, Mariah Carey has since become the best-selling female performer of all time, with an incredible 15 #1 singles and two Grammy Awards. Along the way she became the only artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s, and, with "Heartbreaker," she pushed ahead of the Beatles as the artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. Possessing a spectacular seven-octave range, Mariah has proven that she is equally at home with sweeping ballads and pop, often incorporating elements of dance and hip-hop into the mix. Perhaps even more impressive, she composes all of her own material. Born in Long Island, NY, as the daughter of a former opera singer and vocal coach -- Mariah began singing at the age of four, and was writing her own songs by the time she was attending Oldfield Middle School. She moved to New York City, the day after graduating from high school. Honing her songwriting skills and lending her vocals to several local acts, she first garnered industry attention when singing backup for Brenda K. Starr, who gave Mariah's demo tape to Sony Music Entertainment chief Tommy Mottola at a party. As legend has it, Mottola played the demo on his ride home and ordered his driver to immediately return to the party so that he could meet the young singer. Soon afterwards, Mottola signed Mariah to a Columbia Records contract. Mariah's self-titled Columbia debut, released in 1990, spawned an extraordinary four #1 singles: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday" and "I Don't Wanna Cry," and led to Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. The following year's album, Emotions, was another smash, with the title track scoring her fifth consecutive #1 single and two other titles "Can't Let Go" and "Make It Happen" reaching the Top Five. Her next release, 1992's MTV Unplugged EP, scored another #1 with her cover of the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There." Music Box (1993) became her biggest seller to date, with "Dreamlover" and "Hero" again topping the charts, and was followed by 1994's Merry Christmas, which contained another hit with "All I Want for Christmas is You." Daydream (1995) contained the club-friendly "Fantasy," which debuted at #1 making Mariah the second artist in history, and the first female performer, to accomplish that feat. The follow-up single, "One Sweet Day" (recorded with Boyz II Men), followed suit and stayed at the top of the charts for a record 16 weeks. Butterfly (1997) revealed an even greater hip-hop flavor than its predecessor, scoring hits with "Honey" and "My All." The following year witnessed the release of greatest hits collection #1's, which included a new song, "When You Believe" (from the film The Prince of Egypt), a duet with Whitney Houston which paired the two most successful female recording artists in pop history. Rainbow, with its chart-topping tune "Heartbreaker," followed in 1999. In 2001, Mariah signed with Virgin Records, which released Glitter, the soundtrack album to the film of the same name, with Mariah in her first lead acting role. She has also been featured in the films The Bachelor (1999) and Wisegirls (2002). Mariah has garnered many accolades throughout her career including 2 Grammy Awards, 8 American Music Awards, Billboard's "Artist of the Decade" Award and the World Music Award for "World's Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium" to name a few. Mariah's many accomplishments and unprecedented career success stand as a testament to her creativity and talent. That they represent only the beginning is all the more impressive. Pull up your pants!
By Danica Lo It's resolution time - and we have a few for some of our favorite stars. Some of our most photographed A-listers ought to say goodbye to the lousy trends they've helped launch. At the top of the list: Break the low-rider jean habit, girls! Ultra-low-riders are officially off the fashion radar, but Britney, Pink and Paris continue to parade their pelvises in public. If those jeans were any lower, they'd be socks! We all know these gals go to fashion shows. If only they'd learn a thing or two. Turn off the tanning bed, Jessica Simpson and everyone else: If you keep baking in the sun, we're going to need dental records to identify you. And how about dominatrix gear? Canadian country crossover Shania Twain looks like she knocked over an '80s drag-queen fetish shop to furnish her wardrobe. We're afraid - very afraid - of seeing more whips and chains in 2004. Cleavage as a publicity stunt, à la Mariah Carey, is bor-ing. But wait - so are people who rely on this gimmick to get photographed! Don't think it's just the ladies who are leading fashion followers astray. Ashton Kutcher has hair. Does he really think he can fool his fashion-savvy fans by donning a different silly hat every time he goes out? Sorry, Ashton, your hats can only do so much to distract from your drab taste in clothing. Perhaps Beyoncé, Christina and Nicole Richie could borrow one of those trucker caps to cover up their awful roots and hair extensions... Tale of Tommy's two women
By Rebecca Louie, Suzanne Rozdeba, Zoe Alexander and Ben Widdicombe Aspen is a small town. It's even smaller when your ex-wife is there. So Tommy Mottola and his wife, Thalia, went out of their way to give his former spouse Mariah Carey - and a new young beau - the cold shoulder when they were in the resort town over the holidays. When the Sony exec got hungry, he didn't just call for a reservation. He also checked very carefully to see if his Carey and Co. were anywhere in the nabe. Our ski-town spies say Mottola checked with places such as La Montagna and Matsuhara to avoid a mess between the past and present Mrs. Mottolas. The talk of the town, however, was whether Mariah had found new love. Our spy says that she may've taken a page from Demi Moore's best-selling book of young love, whispering that, the 33-year-old Carey has been seen canoodling with a "cute, twentysomething guy in her entourage." The mystery man was said to be "upset that Carey ran into her ex-boyfriend Luis Miguel, and they were friendly." Carey and her boy toy ditched her $100,000-rental ski home and are said to have headed to Anguilla. Though eyebrows up and down the lifts were raised by this sudden flight, reps for Carey insist that the move has nothing to do with a relationship issue. "She is traveling with several people," says her rep, Cindi Berger. "And she does not have a boyfriend." But we suspect all that Glitters is not told. Mariah arrives in the Carribbean
After a few days in the cold snow of Aspen, Colorado, Mariah Carey has just arrived in the Carribbean. She made a little trip through the islands of Anguilla and St. Barthelemy before her last stop, St. Martin. In St. Barth, Mariah went to a party with P. Diddy, Naomi Campbell, Beyonce and Jay-Z in a night club rented for the night. Source: Mariah Daily Posted on January the 5th. |
Candy girl
By Richard Johnson with Paula Froelich and Chris Wilson Mariah Carey's next album will be called "Lollipop," and is described as a mix of "sensual, funky groove[s] that should hit radio in mid- to late May," according to music insiders on thevelvetrope.com. But Cindi Berger, Carey's rep, said the advance buzz might be a tad premature. "Mariah has been working on the album in the studio, but there is no time frame or title set yet." Here's hoping this effort does better than Carey's last clunker, "Charmbracelet." Source: PageSix (All rights reserved) Heroes comment: Mmmm, velvetrope.com, mmm, music insiders... this "news" was posted on a forum by a person named "SSANT", click here to view THE source . What is sad in this story is that: 1. PageSix (NY Post) is so desperate to find news that they need to look in forums , 2. That Cindi Berger who has so much important stuffs to do, needs to deny rumors posted by people on a forum and which ended as a scoop from a music insider in a newspaper and 3. Is more than 3 millions albums sold wordlwide really that bad? In my opinion, with all the piracy problems worldwide, I would say Charmbracelet sold well. Posted on January the 5th. |

Fifty things to see and do - 26 to 50
34 Theatre Stars on stage The Hollywood colonisation of the West End looks set to continue, eclipsing Jason Donovan's return to the stage in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (from 12 January at the Palladium). He will be followed by TV heart-throbs Luke Perry (Beverly Hills 90210) and Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) in When Harry Met Sally (Theatre Royal Haymarket from 11 February), with songs from new jazz star, Jamie Cullum. However, fans of Calista Flockhart and pop diva Mariah Carey will have to wait; they were due to star in Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie and Terence Rattigan's The Sleeping Prince respectively, but both projects have been postponed. Similarly, Jake Gyllenhaal is waiting to finalise a deal to star in Romeo and Juliet. But there is consolation in the shape of Kristin Davis (Sex and the City) who has expressed an interest in working in the West End and Julia Stiles who is set to star in David Mamet's Oleanna, while other high-profile names are being wooed for another Mamet play, A Life in the Theatre. 6-pound, 5-ounce Mariah born 6 minutes into
2004
Jennifer Hickin Elyria -- Just six minutes into 2004 Mariah Hendrix entered the world, becoming the first baby in Lorain County for 2004. With a due date of Dec. 29, Mariah was not expected to be a New Year's baby, according to mother Krystal Adams, 16, of LaGrange. But after 26 hours in labor at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria, Adams had an emergency Caesarean section and gave birth minutes into the new year at 12:06 a.m. ''I'm just glad she's finally here,'' said Adams, who described having the first baby of the year as ''exciting'' and ''different.'' ''I'm glad that she's healthy,'' said father Seth Hendrix, 18, of LaGrange. Weighing 6 pounds, 5 ounces, baby Hendrix was named Mariah after Adams' favorite singer, Mariah Carey, she said. ''It's wonderful,'' Hendrix said about having the first baby in the county. The parents found out about the honor after reporters began calling the medical center, Adams said. Something this and last year's first Lorain County baby of the year -- Jordyn Monet Sledge -- share in common is a due date. Both were expected to arrive on Dec. 29 but waited to be born until the new year. As part of having the first baby, the mom and baby are given gifts, with the items changing every year, according to a nurse at the EMH Regional Medical Center. EMH Regional Medical Center also was home to the second baby in the county born at 12:30 a.m., a maternity ward staff member said. The first baby born at Community Health Partners in Lorain this year was Emily Noelle Bennett, born to John and Katherine Bennett of Amherst at 3:26 a.m., according to a Community Health Partners charge nurse. Zinkler Films about WiseGirls and Sweet Science
I just received this news: As you may have heard as of last week it was announced in the United States that Wisegirls will air on HBO TELEVISION. Wisegirls was originally contracted to be released as a theatrical motion picture. UNFORTUNALLY partly due to deadlines and delays, not met by the producer and Leading Pictures the executive production company, the movie was not delivered on time and Lions Gate decided to change their obligation and not keep their comittment to the theatrical release. The movie showed great acclaim at Sundance and we were all looking forward to the theatrical release. HBO has apparently purchased the movie for the United States and at this time it is not sure other than television viewing the movie through HBO. It is a very somber time for most of us involved with Wisegirls. Mariah finally had her 2nd chance to prove people wrong and show her wonderful acting abilities and now we are not sure what will happen next. Both the movie and Mariah were honored with standing ovations from the audience. A spokeman for Jessica Russell whose production company, Zinkler Films could not comment on her filing of multiple lawsuits involving mishandled funds and fraud against the fellow Wisegirls producer. It was confirmed both Russell and Esposito were to produce the long awaited but defunct film, Sweet Science which Carey had interest to portray the lead role of a boxer, but she did not sign. A spokesman for Zinkler Films comments, Russell at one time had multiple productions planned with Esposito which were to finance through Russell, including Sweet Science. Ms. Russell severed her relationship with Esposito prior to the filing of her suits in 2002. Ms. Russell has high integrity and wants to make high quality motion pictures using a honest filmmaking. Mariah to sing next Bond theme with Sean Paul?
Universal studios are betting on Mariah Carey as the voice on the next 007 that will debut in theaters at the end of 2004, with Pierce Brosnan again. The only thing left to decide is the soundtrack, who will be singing next to Mariah Carey? The studio wants a song with a Hip Hop sound that will get radios to play it all over the world. Jamaican singer Sean Paul, who had great success in 2003 beside Beyoncé with the song Baby Boy (stayed 9 weeks at #1 on Billboard) is the most likely to be picked to join in the song. Back together ... again
Is Mariah Carey back with her ex, Mexican heartthrob Luis Miguel? That's what spies in Colorado are saying. Apparently, Mariah and Luis were both in Aspen for the Christmas holiday and Carey spent the weekend going back and forth between the house she'd rented and Luis' place nearby. A source told the New York Post that Luis popped into one of the shops in town to get a closer look at a vase he'd seen in the window and told the friend he was with: "This would be a perfect present for Mariah." Cold front, Mariah?
By Heather Brown Pop beauty Mariah Carey looks dressed to chill as she shows off her cleavage at a winter holiday resort. The singer exposed herself to the elements — and photographers — as she took her dog for a walk in the snow in Aspen, Colorado. Despite freezing conditions she left her coat wide open — leaving just a flimsy pink top to cover her frozen assets. Diva Mariah, 33, whose hits include Hero and Dreamlover, is famed for travelling with her entire wardrobe. And her mixture of sunglasses and snowboots suggested she was prepared for all weathers. Her pooch displayed the better dress sense. He was wrapped up warmer than his owner.
